Casey. Some college in California did a study on just that subject. Drivers tend to "drift" to the side. Both on coming and same side of roadway, that they are visually attracted to . I believe the Insurance board financed this study. They call it the "moth syndrome" as in moths being attracted to light. Again thanks for my second cup of coffee break from cleaning stalls. As always. Progressional and informative. Thx again gw
@ClimptonDiddlehopper
@ClimptonDiddlehopper 8 дней назад
Well that study was a waste as they did one in the late 50's probably not needing a 5 million dollar grant that said people turning to look turn the wheel the same direction of where they look since the shoulders work with the neck.

I was a lineman and we would get called out for broken poles when a vehicle would run off the highway. It always amazed me how they could hit an 8 in wide pole in the middle of their grill. They couldn’t hit the 200 foot gap between the poles.

AAA did a study and found that at night, people naturally steer where they are looking. Don't give them something more interesting to look at than the road they are supposed to be driving on and you are much safer. Second interesting thing from their study: people who are intoxicated are very attracted to flashing lights.

The rubber dip that's available for tool handles would be a good replacement for the missing pad on your clamp(s), OR, a piece of rubber taped on with Gorilla tape. The radio receiver shark fin on my car has been held in place for 3+ years in Ottawa, Canada's humid summers (108 F today) and cold winters, with clear Gorilla tape. All I did was wipe the contact surfaces with rubbing alcohol. I'm aware that there is also a 'permanent' tape available, which is virtually impossible to remove, but it's not as readily available.

Have you tried to put thicker soft rubber blocks under your red rotating lights on the headache rack? It might help with vibration if you isolate the light from the rack using some rubber blocks between each of the mounting bolts. To describe what i mean If you put the palm of your hand against the window and hit the other side you will feel more of the impact than if you put your finger tips on the window and hit the same spot

Flashing lights and drunk drivers remind me of when I worked as an EMT in a major city. We and PD followed what we called night time drunk driver rules. After midnight, we slowed down at all lights even if green. For the traffic lights that went flashing yellow, we came to a stop or a near stop to make sure no drunk drivers ran the red flashing ones. Studies have shown drunk or overly tired drivers at night do fixate on flashing red lights and just drive through them. Saw many drunk drivers doing exactly that - drive through them.

A 3 pound coffee can full of misc. bolts nuts and washers might be a good thing to keep on your truck for the missing bolt scenario.

While I really enjoyed the T BUMS Almost 2 hour video (even watched it a second time with the wife), I thank you for not this one a 7 hour video 😅

I use the same clamps for welding and automotive bodywork! They hold great. I found one I forgot under my Camaro holding the header bolt. It was rusted pretty good. Still working with a spray of WD40! 🍻

I totally agree with your flashing lights idea. Only when I absolutely have to do I use my rotary lights. Not only is it a distraction for drivers it also can make it hard for them to see, causing a more dangerous situation

Yes, and a roll of tape, some zip ties, and a few other odds and ends that I keep there so I don’t have to go to my toolbox on the other side

Why do people always seem to hit the tree or utility pole when they are sliding off the road in the snow? because they fixate on the tree because they are scared to hit it and then as their eyes focus on that object they steer right into it. If they had focused their eyes on the gap between the trees then they will naturally steer for that gap. Look where you want to go. So with the bright flashy lights it draws the driver's eye and they steer towards it.
