This is one of the best examples, of a track that just takes you somewhere else. Nothing complex, no kicks and giggles, just straight up mind journey.

A passionate journey of sound that takes you places that you never knew existed. Their music goes off in so many directions, each a tour through some heaven. Their Holy Grail is "Wish You Were Here".

Richard Wright requested this song for his funeral during his lifetime. He asked Durga Mc Broom, a backing singer from the Pink Floyd World Tour, to sing the song at his funeral. There is still an unconfirmed rumor that Durga was accompanied on the piano by none other than John Lord from Deep Purple.

How touching. This piece , to me personally , is about child birth. The initial expectation, the pain of child labour, the beauty of a new life. Magical. A piece that touches the soul.

Musically this track is so deceptive, Ricks Piano just has so much feeling then Put Clare Torry's vocal over the top of it and it gets me every time, so much emotion with few words, Clare had to fight to get the totally deserved recognition for her contribution and one of the best vocal performances EVER. Big Love Brother

Highly recommend a full album reaction of Pink Floyd-Amimals. The songs are actually in a loop: side 2 starts where side 1 ends, and side 1 starts where side 2 ends. The songs are themed after 3 human personalities-pigs, dogs and sheep.

Welcome Tommy, PF has been in part of me from the mid 80s. I've been catching up with a bunch of reviews and reactions and I must say your reactions and demeanor you have on your clips is truly soulful. Remain humble and loving to all around you.....Blessing Pink Floyd Brother! PS. The original recording of this song has always been a master peace Clare Tory, takes this song deep into your soul. (There can be no other) Pink Floyd, sounds best in the dark, with a good sound system with no visuals!

Small anectode to this song. In the very last chord, while it's fading out, there is a little pitch bend of a half tone up then back down. I have the original vinyl pressing of this album, and I always, since I was a kid, thought it was a little glitch in the press. Maybe a unique error in my particular vinyl (which would make it a very precious rarity, but unfortunately it is not). I felt confirmed when my brother bought the cd version, and the pitch bend was gone. It turns out in later digital releases the pitch bend is back, like in this remastered version. It is unclear whether it was intentional or a glitch in recording/mastering. Fact is: For me the pitch bend is such a tiny but integral part of the song, I expect it to happen and I can't listen to the old cd version where it's missing, lol....

This song is about the end of the journey of life. This album is intended to be listened to from start to finish as the tracks seamlessly join together to make one journey in sound. You will appreciate the flow even more as it transitions through various soundscapes and themes. Glad you picked the album version with the original line up. The newer live versions on YT with a bunch of session musicians don't hit the spot for me.

That "Swept Away" feeling you got here is THE thing that sets Pink Floyd apart......They are masters at Building a piece of music.... Ad for the aspect of being emotionally touch by the music....That's what music is supposed to do, and if it doesn't, then they aint doing it right. (IMHO) As a new SUB, I'm looking forward to your continued discoveries of new melodic structure, and highly recommend most any Floyd.

Rick Weight wrote the music for a movie and the director said it was to sad for what he wanted. The band use it for DSOTM. Much like Comfortably Numb music was done by Dave Gilmour for part of a a solo album. Which was done on a acoustic guitar. Took it to the band for " The Wall"and the rest is history. The Band told Calare to sing with no words. After 2 takes working halfway on the third she stop and said she could do anything different. Amazing

Pink Floyd is Yin to the Yang other bands like Led Zeppelin. Generally a slower pace, with space and "air" and a precision in playing and choice of each and every word. Check Out :- Pink Floyd "Echoes (Part 1)" live at Pompeii 1972 No Audience, No Lights, No Pyrotechnics just Gods playing to the Gods in the ancient Roman Amphitheatre. (please note, I suggest Part1 only for Reaction Video purposes, Part 2 is an extended "sound scape" before returning to the main theme)

Great reaction and great channel concept too. We all need a chance to speak and be heard from time to time, so kudos to you for offering that. The remaster seems to overshadow the vocals with the music, and that annoys me because the wordless lyrics tell as much of the story as the music does and they should be more in balance. David Gilmour, lead guitarist and vocalist, always said he had trouble expressing himself in words, so in quite a few songs his guitar clearly and obviously says more of the message and the feelings behind the song than the lyrics do. And their lyrics are often awesome in their depth and feeling which is even more amazing since they were just guys in their twenties when they wrote a lot of their truly deeper stuff. As an empath I can tell you that if you want your soul ripped to shreds and yet healed and reinvigorated then keep listening to Pink Floyd. A lot of their albums were meant to be listened to in whole instead of piecemeal, and a lot of their most impassioned and intense songs are the longer/multi-part songs such as Echoes and Shine On You Crazy Diamond.

The song was written by Rick Wright, keyboard, said to be the one that gave PF its soul. There's more but I can't remember what the others "brought to the band". Clare Torry was paid £30 for her singing, 2,5 takes, in 2005 a lawsuit was settled for an undisclosed amount and she was rightfully given writers credit. As I remember it the man talking in the beginning of the song was a janitor at the Abbey Road studio. In my personal opinion no band has ever managed to capture the massive anxiety of dying in such a credible way. I truly enjoy sharing "my" music with people who appreciate it. I hope I've redeemed myself after your disappointment with Run Like Hell. 😉 Thank you Tommy for being you. / Swedish Pete

Is this song about death or dying?…. No. I met David Gilmour back stage at a concert in California 1984. I asked him about the meaning - reason for “Great Gig In The Sky”…. David’s answer was something like…. .I was asked if Pink Floyd would ever do a song about Religion like some others have… so I said, You are referring to the great gig in the sky they call “God“. What words could be used to describe all the pain and suffering caused by religious beliefs. All the crying and wailing from mothers who lost their husbands or sons in a war fought over religious differences. The only vocals should be just the sound of a mothers crying with pain and suffering. That’s the true intentions of the song. We didn’t want to make that public so as to avoid any religious boycott like what happened to the Beatles after Lennon made his comment about Jesus. We could not tell the singer so as to avoid her making any comments that would end up in the media. The speaking heard at the beginning was recorded at Apple records prior to the recording of the song. Roger Waters placed a recorder at the door asking anyone who walked by to answer some questions into the microphone. The janitor stopped and recorded his answer to the question….”Are You Afraid Of Dying”?. It was decided to add the recording to the start of “Great Gig In The Sky”. It leads people to believe the song is about dying, but that is actually not the case. The Great Gig In The Sky…is GOD … The incredible vocals from Clare Torry happened when she did not know what they wanted. David Gilmour told her to pretend her voice is a Saxophone like on other songs on the album, no words, just tones. Richard Wright only wrote the music for a different project prior to the songs concept ever being thought of which was the results of Gilmour being asked if P.F. would ever do a song about religion Results are legendary.
