I agree, France is the worst about english. They act like they cant speak it then I started speaking Spanish to them and then they start speaking english to me. Its like wtf
@@RomaInvicta202 No I was upset because I tried speaking french to them and it wasnt good enough and they hide the fact they all speak English. Its like a secret club and they dont allow anyone in it

And they know it pretty well :) Figured that out paying small fortune on private doctors there :) But, I respect their stubbornness :) Hungarians have similar moments, still suffering from ptsd from fighting Germ over keeping their language, identity :)
So the first thing you have to know about a conversation with French people is even before you speak you're wrong. If you attempt to speak English to a French person they will be insulted and pretend to not understand English. If you attempt to speak French to a French person they will be insulted and pretend to not understand because your accent is just impossibly horrible. Only after you have apologized for speaking at all will they declare which language they will engage with you and only then can the conversation occur.
Wasn’t the case with me. I had a guy come up to me at Euro Park (that’s in Germany) speaking French and I couldn’t understand him so I replied with “Anglais?” and he had to think for a second but he was able to say “do you know what the time is?.” I think I told him like 5 PM haha was probably obvious at the point what country I was from. Out of everyone in that park he chose the American guy to ask what time it was in French 😂 Definitely a story I won’t forget!

Great video, however some points to note : Slovakia was never a part of the USSR. Also it is not a poor third world country but is a highly developed country with very low crime rates. The capital city of Bratislava is only a hours drive from Vienna, which has the highest standard of living of any city in the world.
Speaking as a Brit who worked in France for 5 years, I can tell you the French pride themselves on NOT speaking English unless they really, really have to. They think their food and culture is the best in the world, their language is mellifluous and tricky for foreigners, but why learn another one if you have the best already? I came away from France both loving and hating it in equal measure.

Dont worry, us English living next door to the French learn French in school, but none of us can speak it either! French classes were the scenes of much dicking around, and no work done in every school across the country!.. Also, little tip I found helped was to always learn how they pronounce 'English' in whatever country you go to, for example the French say it like "On-glay", and usually if they dont speak English themselves, as soon they hear 'English' in their own tongue, they will go find someone who can speak it for you.
@clembo when I worked in rural France I spoke to young people, teenagers... none of them understood English . And it was weird, because English is really not a hard language...It's simplistic and a little boring... but yeah, it turned out that French and English vocabulary both have words that are very similar, but have completely different roots and meaning. So that's why it seems to be very confusing for French to learn English. They did understand Spanish tho.
@@gregorjakopic1853 Totally agree, I have visited France many times and outside of the big cities you rarely hear English spoken (unless it is actually an Englishman complaining that the Vineyard he bought for 500 Euros for his retirement has gone sour, true story! 😁). It doesnt help that a few years ago French Nationalists were decrying the decline of their language as a 'lingua franca', and a whole new generation were raised to be snooty about learning English. The Spanish on the other hand take pride in learning English, you can wander off into the most desolate place around the mountains and find random sheep herders along the way that speak perfect English (yet have never set foot here). That was my reason for learning Spanish as an adult instead (that, and the Spanish women! lol)
In France and in the UK we (mainly) only have one language, so there are no real incentives for people to learn foreign languages if they do not travel or need it for work. Things would be different in a country where an increasing part of the population has another language as their mother tongue. For example Spanish, in the USA...
Hi, French here, 28 years old. Honestly for most of us, we either have been traumatized to talk in english in classes, or in rural areas it is not a big deal to learn english, they don't need it. But first learning english is mandatory only at age 11, for some like me (because I had german as first language) 13. Second we don't learn to "speak", we learn to "read" it, and teachers insists *a lot* on the accent and not the prononciation. And well, English isn't really easy on this aspect. Third there is a difference between the younger and older generation, older generation almost didn't have english classes. That's how it is.
I waited on a woman from Paris back in the day. She complimented how great the customer service was here in the states & how RUDE people were in Paris. She said people just about throw your bags at you! Just love your videos!
That french woman was exaggerating about their own country as they always do. I'm an American who has been engrained in french culture for more than a decade. I don't look like your typical white US foreigner so it's not bias (if anything it's the opposite). french customer service is not rude, waiters are nice, most everybody is just as nice as any service staff you would meet in the US. Maybe it's different if you're a snooty french woman.
I like this chap, he is not only great looking but also honest, unpretentious, naturally real. It’s a pleasure to watch him. Cheerio and the best of good adventures to you !

Had the same issue with French Canadians that were on vacation in the USA their vehicle broke down and they pretended not to understand any English at all. Made my job way harder than it needed to be trying to get them to tell me what they wanted me to do with their vehicle? They made AAA get a translator at the dispatch center. I caught them talking English at the car dealership later.

1) Slovakia was never part of the USSR. It was a part of the "Soviet Bloc" during the Cold War, however. 2) Slovakia is not, nor has it ever been, a "Third World" country. The USSR and the Soviet Bloc were called the Second World during the Cold War, though that term doesn't apply nowadays. Modernization of these countries since the end of the Cold War has made many cities in Eastern Europe and Russia more advanced and comfortable in certain respects than typical cities in the U.S., which are dangerous to live in and are falling apart. 3) The area you are showing is not what I would call the Tatra mountains, but its foothills. The Tatras are majestic mountains which you did not portray in this video. I took a week-long vacation of the area in 2017 and drove completely around the Tatras in Poland and Slovakia, in addition to hiking and exploring within the Tatra range itself.
Bruh, they 110% are literal third world countries. Still carrying buckets of water on their heads and shit. You've obviously never been to the US if you think it's "dangerous and falling apart" LMAO there's a reason Everybody and their mother flocks to the US for freedom. Not for danger and things falling apart. SMH 😂
Reminds me of a trip to Costa Rica I took, we met some girls at the bar. They volunteered to come back home with us (group of 5 guys) to hangout. Towards the end of the night they start demanding 200 bucks each or they were not leaving. They said they came and hungout so we owed them money. It was insane, I ended up paying 1 girl but then forced them all to leave. We only decided to pay because we did not want them coming back and fucking with us. Being in a foreign country and all. Thinking back on it we should have not given any money and just changed where we were staying. But whatever lesson learned. We were down there to fish
Yea when you are a tourist and go to popular places in latinamerica you always gotta watch for the women Also depends if it's a touristy area, where you can see alot of Americans or Asians usually, as locals in latinamerica (except prob Panama) wont be paying for sex. I know this clip is 1 year old; but commentary about French people really hit me. My wife is French, I am from Iowa.... I speak a little French from learning over the years. Hard culture to incorporate into as an English speaker. It is tough, u where taught English in school but don't have any desire to speak English unless drunk then they speak perfect English. imagine that!

@@derkonig162 There is NO WAY that ANY EU country is a 3rd world country. 3rd world countries are poor and I mean poor like Somalia or Afghanistan. 2nd world countries are like Colombia or Costa Rica. 1st world countries are every EU countries and for example Canada or USA. You have to speak french first, apologize for not speaking french, and then ask if they know English. Then they warm up. I just learned a simple french phrase to explain that and everything went fine. You can't get mad at the traditional enemies of England for not speaking the enemies language, bud. Love ya. "Je ne comprends pas le francais. Parlez Anglais?"
English speakers say the French are entitled but what about these English speakers that go to a foreign country and expect everyone to speak english perfectly. He’s American, he didn’t get the same education we did. Only Americans think the entire world should speak English. I’m Canadian and I learned French from kindergarten to grade 12 and I don’t speak the language- I can only conjugate verbs. That’s all you learn in school as far as language, you don’t actually learn to converse in it.
That near-death experience was quite an adrenaline rush, for you too I guess. How did you get the bike? Maybe you said so in the video but then I unfortunately missed it. Stay safe!
I live in a touristed area in the States and NO ONE speaks anything but english. I've been in numerous national parks in the States and there is no signage in anything but english. Plus... if you get off the expressways and major highways in the US the number of small towns that are virtually abandoned and poverty stricken is staggering.
If a friend texted me that he got robbed by French prostitutes, and banned by Air B&B , the only possible response could be " good job". If someone pushes up on you for money, or starts pushing sex acts from go, these are good "working class" people not to hang out with. Most wealthy people are pretty tiresome; the irony is, of course, you can go anywhere, afford to do anything,- but you have to be with them.
Hearing that everyone in France forgets their English despite it being so international is surprising... idk maybe it's from historical french pride? Or just literally never using it? From school I think I'd do well in languages as I was in French immersion from 5 years old till 11 (all of primary school), but only used it at school at a young age and never really used it outside school. And yet I can remember how to read, can understand decently well even if it's spoken pretty fast, and speak decently with a good accent. Idk maybe I should get back into languages Something really cool that you can do by knowing French (because they have SO much history and French as a language has basically remained the same overall for a long, long time) is you can read quite old original historical documents. One of the absolute coolest things you can read is Napoleon's personal journals in their original French!! To me that's not just amazing but special. You can go online and read them they have been scanned and uploaded for anyone to read.
Thank you for acknowledging our history you are a brave man. If you want a french student perspective, here is the truth about english language. The main reason why we don't like to talk english is firstly because it is seen as a mondialistic citadine gay parisian thing, especially in the rural part. We do mock the ones that put english words in their french sentences, especially the business related words, it is a cultural meme. I have this scene of a Louis de Funes film of the 60s where he talk in an approximative english which is hilarious. The other reasons are linked to our historical hostility with England and the lose of the seven years war. Talking english is a bit like talking the rival's language so it is question of pride. Maybe this has led to the fact that for a long time, in the schools, they didn't teached us english, also because we don't needed it. It is also recently with all the mondialisation and tourism that it has been a priority. But in France english lesson is a joke for my generation. It is a low priority matter and during class everyone shouts and mind his own business instead of working, while in the other classes they are well behaved. Teachers are usually women who make us do group projects (they are funny but in the end we don't learn too much). In my case, I learned english since my 8 years old thanks to some lessons in school, the British Council, but mainly with films, video games and memes. Since I live in the capital, I am often arrested by lost foreign tourist who ask for the way, and I'm glad to answer them in english, even if I don't like english monopole and the fact that they are forcing us to speak their language. When I go to a different country I speak their native language not mine it is a question of education ! Well, in the end, I'm sorry for the American who come here and are pissed because nobody speaks English but it is what is. And lucky for you, the things are changing because more and more french are talking english particularly because of Internet, but I would always prefer an English-speaking who makes the effort of talking french.

A lot of people in France actually do speak English they just don’t want to, was his point. As a travel channel it’s nice he tells us which countries are more tourist friendly. He wasn’t implying they had to, but it was a clear difference from Japan or even Pakistan where not very many people spoke English but they made a connection with basic phrases. Having read the comments on French people. I am a little dismayed . Paris is a capital city. You can’t judge French people by Parisians, Americans by New Yorkers, England by Londoners. Get on a bus in Newcastle and by the time you get off, you know everyone. Get on a tube in London and no one will ever smile, unless they are a tourist or from the North. I have lived in Central France for three years. Couldn’t speak a word. Now I am completely fluent . I made an effort. French people here are really friendly. But rarely speak English because they can’t. What now pisses me off is the English people who have lived here for 20 years or more, who don’t integrate with the French, don’t make the effort to learn French and bitch about England and Brexit. Personally, I think that it is arrogant and insulting to expect people in a foreign country to speak English. The French don’t bitch about English people not speaking French when they visit London which they do a lot (and for some reason absolutely love the shit hole). They have nothing but good things to say. I don’t like French politics and French protectionism. Due to their history of surrender, they have a chip on their shoulder. They are very proud of being French. They are very family oriented. Kids and teenagers (outside the big cities are incredibly respectful) I have not seen one example of anti social behaviour in three years. Not one in three years.. I prefer the Dutch and the Germans who know how to have fun. But the French outside of the big cities are definitely less arrogant than the brits or Americans.
It’s the same in certain provinces in Canada - elementary/high schools teach French as a secondary language and English as primary. But since the province (minus Quebec) primarily speaks in English, we tend to forget how to speak/understand French over the years 😅
Slovakia was never part of USSR, nor is it a 3rd world country, it's a developed country with a high-income economy, yes the roads are fucked up but get your facts straight dude

It's true that not everyone in France or Spain speaks English fluently, and that's okay. Diversity in languages and cultures is something to be celebrated. Preserving and valuing linguistic diversity is important for maintaining the richness of our global community. It's disheartening to see the homogenization of global culture with chains like Starbucks and McDonald's popping up everywhere. Embracing diversity, including linguistic diversity, helps us appreciate the unique flavors and experiences each culture brings to the table.
No one uses 1st, 2nd, and 3rd world correctly. It's original meaning: 1st world are those aligned with the US, 2nd world are those aligned with Russia/USSR, 3rd world are those aligned with neither. Poverty & wealth are happenstance in those categories (e.g. you can have a very, VERY rich 3rd world nation).
