This is the Acer Aspire One A0751h I got free from my brother with its stock specs. How does a netbook like this perform in 2020?

I had the first aspire 8.9 inch with optional 6 cell battery. I was on the waitlist for the first batch! To that date I had never been more please with a tech buy. Changed my life at Univeristy not lugging around the massive heavy laptops of the time... had 7 hours of battery life which was phenomenal at the time... It ran xp. I kept it clean and lean and was shocked to find it could even handle light work in IDE’s for coding... not well... but functional...

D270 model aspire one over here. Got it Christmas 2012 used it almost daily until Microsoft ended support for Windows 7. Now it's my ultra portable retro gaming machine to tout around

My brother sends me electronics sometimes too knowing how much I love older or vintage stuff. I didn't get a laptop till junior year of college (electrical and computer engineering) and it was 10+ years old.

Same though the battery was replaced with one from a donor. Too my surprise the ScanDisk utility says the SSD I upgraded it to year's ago isn't even 1% through it's expected life time

Just picked up a one with a dual core n570 2gb ram and windows 7 starter. I've owned many smaller laptops in the past but this will be my first netbook. I remember how bad I wanted an EEE Pc back when they came out.

I have two of these Aspire Ones each with 1GB of RAM. I installed lubuntu 22.04 on both of them and added more SWAP space. They work OK now. I just use them for extra netbooks and they work well, especially for terminal, but Firefox works ok too, but a bit slow. They make a good terminal. -Thx

just digged mine out and put on linux lubuntu, which is a light OS. works like a charm, it stuggled with windows definitely. l used it in uni to check where my classes are and did some accounting homework there too with old excel. lubundu has its own speadsheet, requires almost no ram. good stuff. almost usable for everyday use.

i actually had one with 1 gb ram, 32 bit, and a really old bios with windows 7 starter, i ended up finding it again and installed zorin os lite on it

Idk about newer aspire models but my 2008 aspire 1 netbook works like a charm to this day. Slow? Yes but it works

I remember back in the day me and my brother had a windows XP compaq from 2007 xd It was the best. I played 3d pin ball on it and I joined Roblox on it in 2014 before I got my very own new laptop when I was 12. Now I’m 18 with a gaming pc.

I used this on 2011-2012 when I was going to high school. It was great times. Played lots of DDTank and Transformice. Watched lots of TV series, especially Doctor Who. It is great laptop if you tweak it. Still sits at my right in the bag. The thing I am really sad for, after buying this, I saw HP Pavilion DM1 1010ST at the tech store which was also 11.6". I really loved Asus EEE PC's but they were 10.1" so I did not want them. I really wished to buy that DM1 but still I was fine with Acer. Really nice hey-days with it I got. I could everything to get back to those years. And yes, I agree with you. I never had problems with Vista and it is aestheticly perfect. Windows Vista & 7. I love them. Why always old times are better? Gosh!

I am currently using it for my 3d Printer control, just upgrade it to 4gb with cheap SSD Xubuntu + Klipper + Filudd + Obico + Webcam is perfect for 3D printing control! no need a RPI !

@@pucho513 not that I'm aware of, but here what I did in a nutshell. -I downloaded all the drivers/sorftware from Acers website -Used the backup/restore utility to create cd and usb restore media -factory reset the system. Used the restore media to install the drivers and etc -Installed Windows 7 convince rollup update,dotnet framework etc -Set windows to the basic theme to reduce system load and used google to though all the running processes to figure out what one's where safe to disable -Installed Dosbos and Microsoft's very basic virtual machine software (I needed a basic windows 9x machine for Star Wars Jedi Knight and Mystery of the Sith) -then it was just a matter of trying games to see what would work. Once I had that figured out I loaded a cody of the virtual disks for the games that need there cd onto a sd card to leave in the netbooks card reader

I currently have a acer aspire one D270-1492 that I'm thinking about putting linux and upgrading Ram. It currently runs win 10 but is too slow. It originally came with win 7 starter

@@Eccentech It came with 1 gb but can take a max of 2gb of DDR3 ram. Also I'm thinking of swapping the 320 gb HD with a SSD. My question is if I upgrade the RAM beyond 2 GB and then install Linux will it recognize the additional RAM or is the laptop limited by what the motherboard says it can take?

It's the motherboard, definitely not the OS. If it was the OS you could jack that thing up to 128+ GB of RAM lol

I have the same model. Fun fact Windows is what artificially limits the max ram the bios can see the 4gb stick in mine as can Windows 7 starter, though Windows says only 2gb are usable. From what I read at the time until Windows is at the welcome/desktop screen the system uses that extra ram. I did speed tests on mine and the for 4gb stick shaved about 5 seconds off boot up. Definitely upgrade to a SSD, but keep the original hdd or you'll loss the Windows/system restore partition.

You can use Windows 10 now as it is. But the RAM is upgradable for my model.

Windows 10 would probably be really slow. I'd put something like Xubuntu on it.

Most of these netbooks came with Windows XP, but if you want something up-to-date that performs fairly well on these old netbooks you can install Raspberry Pi Desktop. Most things like wi-fi, touchpad, battery status, sound and similar should work out of the box! (or ISO image in this case...)

@@johnridgway6481 Yes, it's Linux with a Raspberry Desktop UI. There are other light Linux distributions that runs great on netbooks as well!

Here ij europe it sold with Windows 7 starte, Works good for things like word and internet. The people that want a light and easy to go Laptop, it is a real option. I have mine nog for ten years and stil run like new.(same coller as in the video ) Is it fast no, but for text and some internet its a good small thing

Windows 10 is made more for newer computers so it will run slow on outdated hardware. Windows XP would run well on it which is good for playing old games on, but you wouldn't want to connect it to the internet because it would get hacked immediately (unless you have a network firewall). A lightweight variant of Linux is recommended if you want a smooth running OS with secure internet capabilities on this kind of hardware.

The battery sticks our bc it’s 6 cell... the 3 cell was flush. It ended up giving a nice camber to the laptop. Sigh... kids today lol....

Install ChromeOS Flex, or Cloudready (ChromiumOS), maybe it became usefull once again.

Chrome OS Flex is made more for businesses though

@@Eccentech it depends. The official ChromeOS Flex is too "young" to run everything. But CloudReady (ChromiumOS) runs almost everything a Android phone runs. The x86 cpu architeture makes some PlayStore apps impossible to install, but there are plenty of apps that works perfectly, even games.

I installed the CloudReady on a Asus eeePC 1000ha, wich runs on a Atom n270 (single core 1.6ghz 32bit). It works fine for basic use, and the system makes the 10inches screen looks so much better than in Windows or Linux.

@@renanoliveira9578 correct me if I'm wrong, isn't chromeOS flex just a newer version of cloudshare? Like i far as I've heard, google bought cloudshare and made it into chromeOS flex? What's the difference btw those two? And how's your experience so far? I have the same laptop in the video, i was thinking of booting it with ChromeOS flex and giving it to my lil sister.

@@moizahmed7392 yes, it it. But, the ChromeOS Flex still on a "beta" phase, so if you want to use a more stable version, with more support to PlayStore, you need to install the CloudReady. When the ChromeOS Flex reaches the CloudReady level of compatibility, then the CloudReady itselfs will offer you to update to the ChromeOS Flex. At least, that's what I heard about it.

Thank you all for your concern, this problem is already solved. My parent brought me a new smartphone that can handle online class though I know laptop is better, for me it is good than nothing. By the way the money is came from the help of the government during pandemic it supposed to be for our food but since we are closer to the sea, my father can still get food for us. It is called "ayuda" here. I really appreciate your care, all.
