Thanks to Paradox Tectonic for sponsoring this short! I got to check out an early in-development build of Life By You, full let's play video coming June 1st! You can also play the game yourself when it enters early acces on June 4th!
Agreed. I can forgive the models and textures but the animations (and sometimes lack thereof) are very jarring. Particularly the instant transition between walking and riding the bicycle. Edit: I watched it again and at first I was like, maybe I was too harsh? This walk cycle isn't that bad. And then I looked at what he does with his arm when he gets a drink from the fridge and I went back to being jarred.
Yesterday on the discord in the Ask the Team, they answered a couple of concerning questions. First off, only 2 characters can interact at a time, so if a 3rd person is there they can’t join in at all. No group activities of more than 2 characters. They also said you can only cook 1 serving of food at a time. No group meals. There’s also no multitasking, and previously they confirmed there is no action queue. So you have to wait until the character finished doing one thing to tell them to do the next thing. These are much bigger concerns than the graphics which everyone is focused on. I know James is marketing for them so talking about how these limitations feel in gameplay probably won’t happen, but it has my red flags up on this game since it’s been developing for 3+ years already.
I’d be surprised if he doesn’t share any constructive criticism in his full length video or at some point around the release. James has never shied away from sharing his opinions before or refusing sponsorships if he wasn’t able to speak freely.
@@itschelseakay I agree but they most likely were under an NDA for these videos, is what I mean. Now that the delay is announced and the LBY team is going dark, who knows what will change between now and the next time they share anything. Hoping for the best.
Ooooh, Life by You asking simmers like James and Fgg to showcase their game is such a good idea! I just know they will do their best to add chaos to their playthrough, and I'm here for it!
Yeah, it's like how everyone says they want an ultra-realistic, death-has-consequenses MMO but they all end up tiny compared to casual friendly mmos. But I think LBY could have a very good following if they focus on mod support and continue to flesh it out and work on bugs. (And make it affordable compared to the sims)
People were saying that this was gonna become more popular than the sims because of the open world but it looks so janky I don’t think we have to worry about it 😅
@@Dontmindmeisnotoriginalin fairness some games spend years in EA but yeah they need to cement an art direction asap (allegedly what we see now is the art direction… to make it more moddable… it’s gonna be like having alpha cc from 10 different creators… nothings gonna march)
@@Dontmindmeisnotoriginal Yeah, I know. I only included that in my comment because I knew if I didn't there would be multiple people telling me I'm wrong because it's early access and *might* change when it's fully released.
@@cryingwatercolours8127 any games spend years in development (I'm not sure that's what you meant I didn't exactly understand). But Life By You is supposed to be the first title of Paradox Tectonic, and the studio was opened in march 2019, so the game development had to start around that time. If what they came up with after five years is this thing (at least on the graphics part), it's not good.
@@FreddyKruegerTheDreamDemon yeah I know, what people doesn't seem to understand is that early access is not supposed to mean "hey here's that rushed sh***y game now but we'll finish it later give us money" but "hey here's our game/concept, it's not completely finished, might be a bit glitchy and unoptimized but still you can get how the gameplay and the game are going to feel". I feel like big developers making their game early access is most of the time to easily cash grab anyway, it works for indie titles that have a concept but doesn't have the fund and cannot just work on it until full release (like Project Zomboid, scrap mechanic, software inc etc) but for Paradox? It feels wrong.
@@fuzzypumpkin7743 its opening in Early Access. There will be a lot of time to improve and PAradox is known for continued development of their games even after full release. Plus this is a smaller dev team working on the game
Please in that video, tell us what are your computer specs, and how this runs, I mean fps wise... it seems like your footage looked less laggy than other that also got the chances to try it. Thanks!
I just hope they...polish things a bit? The animations are lackluster and the facial expressions are almost non-existent, why is the world also really empty like an abandoned town, literally 0 npcs....is that on purpose?....
super excited to watch this simce I won't be playing it. honestly I find LBY too realistic (and quite ugly) in style for my taste... but I'm sure it'll be hilarious to watch James play 😌
honestly i don't think the game will be good. First of all it looks bad and soulless. Like really it looks like a Unity Store asset flip. Second of all it is made by Paradox Interactive which basically is a poor man's EA, since they also sell a stupid amounts of glitchy/lackluster DLC (just look at Cities Skylines and Prison Architect), also their last important game launch (Cities Skylines 2) has been an absolute mess, still suffers the same issues after a few months but they still released 2024 most useless DLC (seems like it was so bad they removed it from steam lol). So yeah i'm not hopeful at all.
I think you made a slight typo on the subtitles in the middle of the short when you was in the clothes store. I might have to play this myself at some point.
So are you under NDA and not allowed to criticize this, or will you be posting a critical video of it? All these sims youtubers getting access is bizarre. You're all complaining about stuff Sims 4 does a million times better than this game but so far nobody's being critical of LBY. Nevermind that it looks, runs, animates, etc so much worse than Sims 4 and even Sims 3. Nobody's got anything negative to say...very strange. Compromising your integrity by being paid to be positive about an obvious pile.
I absolutely hate how this game looks overall, but at the same time, it's still very much under development. If LBY looks and feels the same at full launch as it is now, I am sure it will get criticized.
@@etodraws This game was due out in early access 7 months ago. It's now coming out in early access in june. It looks like it still needs 2 years. They made a broken, terrible game and have committed to basically remaking it as they go- this game is NOT going to be in a good state any time soon. "Early development" is one thing. "Already 7 months late from early access release target" is another. It's shameful to be this early in development for early access in the fisrt place, and now it's still like this after a delay? It's on so much borrowed time and still visibly in an alpha state. The issue I'm having here is that people who are openly critical of Sims 4 sometimes are now happily and proudly throwing their image behind this game, which is clearly, by every single metric, drastically worse off development-wise than even the worst mainline Sims title, whichever one you believe that to be. It's making me question the judgement of these creators. They either agreed to pretend to be nice about this game for money, which is bad, or their standards are so out of whack they're fine with this game being flagrantly terrible while still getting regularly upset with Sims 4, which is also bad.
@@MateriaGirlOr we're all so used to waiting a decade for a game to be playable that we're willing to give this one a chance? People aren't mad the sims has bugs, people are mad the sims has had those bugs for several years and they keep introducing new ones. Does this game look like the peak of gaming? No, but EA has our standards waaaay down in hell, so how badly can they do?
He most likely is. The video is sponsored, and most of the time sponsors review all of the video before they agree with its publication. The game looks like trash, feels like an asset flip, it seems very laggy, and extremely lackluster. Then it's supposed to release in early access but knowing Paradox they will still find a way to release DLCs that will make EA's look like masterpieces. (i don't think the sentence i wrote at the end is correct, english isn't my first language)
Sims 4 is nearing the end of it's life. He is playing the same game every day - *for years* as his job. His audience is here for life sims. This is a great opportunity for him.
The graphics are seriously trash. Even in beta or early development it’s almost unacceptable. The wheels on the car don’t even move? The produce in the grocery store look awful. Just to name a few. Regardless I’m gonna watch every single video James does on it though haha
I love the realism to this game but what I love about sims 4 is how goofy it is so I’m hoping this game has some silly elements to it as well and it isn’t just hyper realism
I wish I could say I enjoy the art style of the game. It feels like Second Life or IMVU and other early/mid 2000s life sims. I don't think I'll buy this one, but I'll continue to watch for updates for all the new life sims on the market. The Sims needs competition.
I have been following this game for a while. I was pretty excited for it. Now though, I am just not a fan of a lot of things. The character graphics and animations just don't mesh or match with the world. They look so out of place. Many of the items and their textures look great. Then the character itself just looks outdated and weird. They look soulless and empty too. I know they said they have been working on the character models and animations. Yet they seem to look worse with every video released. If the game came out 10 or 15 years ago, then maybe I would be ok with it. But now, I just can't stand the look and the graphics.
So pumped!! Was waiting to see you post an early access video. Lo and behold… there was a short! Can’t wait for June. My birthday month too 🙂. Isn’t yours the 4th James???
God... it's still so unappealing to look at it. There's something about the world that is just... idk... ugly imo. Also… maybe James just didn’t spend much time with character creator but… that does not look that much like Semaj…
The semaj character you played actually looked ok. I wanna see what early access looks like, still not aold entirely. Not gonna lie, I hope their is a cheat around buying EVERY ingredient separately. I like going to the grocery store in game, but I like the sims 2 way where you got a basket of basics and could cook until your food supply meter ran out basically.
I'm so disappointed in the visuals as it stands. It just feels... Off. It doesnt look right. It reminds me heavily of those online browser MMO things you could play back in the day. I'm just having IMVU flashbacks. I really hope it gels together when it's (hopefully) polished and finalised for release
Does anyone know how much Life By You costs? Asking because I play on a MacBook and I can play sims 3 but not Sims 4. This looks fun, so I hope I can play it!
