After about 20 years working, I'll tell young people you should not have any loyalty to any organization, they will turn on you in a second when its convenient and fire/replace you. Also to ensure no slavery, young people dont get married and dont get a girl pregnant, make sure she takes the birth control pill daily in front of you and both wear protection. You will just condemn your new child to increasing poverty and freedomless slavery and these control/money/job trends worsen. Promote this idea in videos and social media to help prevent more young people into this new slavery.

I just wanted to chime in, even though this video is old. SAME. Graduated with a degree in sociology and a minor in statistics. Did a couple of research projects to build my portfolio and presented at a conference in undergrad. All of my networking didn’t do much, as I have been rejected/ghosted from over 300 jobs. I can’t count how many cover letters, resumes, interviews, and assessments I’ve done. So much time, so much work, with nothing to show for it. I work at Starbucks making minimum wage, and another co worker graduated with a business management degree 2 years ago. So at least I’m not alone :/ I’m probably just going to join a union and learn a trade.

Graduated in May this year with a degree in computational physics and minors in math and cs. Even took Russian for a good while and was a top student. Big name university, decent gpa. The payoff? Most promising job I can probably find rn with a physics degree is a low-skill retail job. Assuming they don't see me as overqualified. Now I'm trying to pursue web dev certifications and build a portfolio. College is way too behind on keeping up with industry rather than just academia, even in STEM. Degrees seem to be more useless every passing year despite increasing pressure to pursue masters and PhD programs even nowadays. Meanwhile you really don't even need a degree to get into software engineering bc everything is self-taught bc the technology is always changing. The only reason I don't regret college is for being a soul search, and helping me realize my interest in coding.
@sailormoon5293
@sailormoon5293 3 года назад
Though I agree that colleges seem to be overrated and that learning to code, you can probably teach yourself it's honestly quite hard. Most people need a structure and because we've all been used to a school system it's been embed in us. One thing I wish companies would to is have a training camp or apprenticeship (I know some companies have it) I feel like they can seriously obsolete colleges. I have a finance degree and dont remeber jack shit because everything they taught was complete was and I never got to do any practical work.
@theoreticalphysics3644
@theoreticalphysics3644 3 года назад
@@sailormoon5293 I can tell you I remember almost none of the physics from my physics degree too, none of it was practical and covid made the labs nonexistent. I was dumb and really thought I'd be going into academia, but I just don't care for a PhD anymore. I wanna live my 20s. I at least feel like I can learn anything though at this point, so I guess that's a plus. I mean I am really learning JavaScript quick, I've been coding for three years now. I wouldn't feel like that if I didn't have that structure provided by college. But now I've graduated and that structure is gone, debt and the pressure of my family bliss to how rough it all is looms and now it's a race to learn everything they failed to teach me.

Tks for the video. I'm from Brazil and I graduated with a bachelors degree in public relations. its been 6 months since I graduated and I'm still unemployed. All my colleagues from Uni are employed and thriving. It's hard not to think like I'm a failure because I tried so hard to get in the course just to end up unemployed after graduation. As it's not so expensive to go to Uni around here, I'm thinking about getting back to uni to get a business degree. It's not what I want, but I hate being unemployed. Also, I hate the judgment of people around me, I feel like they think I'm lazy which it's not true because I'm applying for jobs that are 34 KM away from my house and also accepting to work on Saturday, but I still don't hear back from those companies. In 2019 I had false expectations for my first full time job. As an engineer I directly applied for jobs which required at least 3 years of full time job experience. Until then I only worked as a so called working student. Later I realized that there were suitable jobs for beginners which included a graduate trainee or young professional phase for the first 6 months. It was a training phase where you took lessons from employees and later on participated in their daily business routine. You have to search for jobs like these in order to get started as a professional.

It makes me crazy, I feel for young people. I actually graduated back in the 90s (yeah, generation X), even back then a college degree didn't give you the keys to the middle class job market kingdom. If you tell young people "don't get a marketing degree because most people don't jobs with that degree" then you come across as stepping on their dreams. If you don't tell them the the above and they get the marketing degree (or whatever) and they don't get a job ever...then you're basically perpetuating the college hoax. Not sure what the answer is.

Thank you for sharing this amazing video. I feel like it really resonated with me especially with the thought process and the current situation. I'm not overly stressed about financial part because I'm lucky enough to live at family home on welfare payments so I can kinda take my time. I do my job search everyday online, sitting with coffee and my thoughts. I graduated last month and I know with my degree is quite generic so I planned to do further study (that's for later). I guess the stress is mainly coming from not having a career direction so I also spend this time reflecting and thinking about what to do next. I also think that COVID has made the job haunting process harder (in my country we are currently under 2 weeks lockdown). I hope things will get better and I can actually get some hear back from employers 😪😪😪

have you done internships while you were in college?

I did! I had summer internships and then did jobs all throughout college (in research and residential life)

"Privileged" sounds like too strong a term and too self-deprecating (forgive me for giving my opinion). You're loved--and fortunate to have the parents you do. Be happy God damnit. Lol

@@arbitrarylib stop what? You want me to stop telling people the truth about spending $100k for an education that has almost zero demand or use in the real world? Do you want another wave of students who want their student loans cancelled courtesy of the taxpayer because they blame others what is obviously their choice to get into? Or maybe it just hurts their feelings. They are called the snowflake generation after all.

Actually a common misconception! You’d be surprised how many people in high-level positions have an undergraduate degree in Psychology and nothing else. More education doesn’t always equate to getting better positions.

@@corinnecarole It needs to be combined with technical skills. I studied philosophy and now have a career as an animator. However, I had a large portfolio which is what landed me the job.

That's why i am against rising the minimum wage. It's weaken the educational system. A mcdonalds employee will be making the same as a teacher. lol. But in all seriousness. If you get a degree in arts. You can basically work in any field. Companies are willing to hire rookies and drop seniors because of pay.

just say you're selfish and greedy & go. instead we should be paying teachers more while also raising the minimum wage. no one should have to live on $7.25 an hour that's no liveable at all and messed up

Teachers and fast food employees should have a livable wage. Just because the minimum wage is rise doesn’t mean it should make an educated individual less valuable.
