I’ve given up reading the paper in the morning and watch this channel instead. Suddenly the worlds a nicer place and my veg garden is too. Good on ya Mark.
Thanks Colin! Mate, I agree, reading and watching too much of the news these days is simply depressing... I love getting into the garden instead. Cheers :)
Here in the Philippines we don’t cut the pomelo like apple otherwise it will taste sour or off to tastebuds. We usually cut the top off (delicately not cut from outside to flesh, just until to white layering only) and we just peel it like orange. You must peel it off that way for best taste. 😊
I love pomelo. I was served pomelo by a Thai lady. She peeled all the pith around the whole fruit first, then separated each piece by pulling them apart and then peel the fibrous skin, OMG, the best!
I had a tree of these , it was literally 2 story’s high! The whole backyard sky was taken by the tree, it was awesome, the fruit would slowly rip so we would have the pomelos half the year. The clippings of over growth, can be re rooted to make a new tree if you want , put in glass o water, it might make roots
These big boys fascinated me when I went to China. Just blew my little mind. Everyone I visited had these individual lobes each the size of a banana sitting in a bowl. Not super sweet or juicy, but just nice to eat. Pretty filling.
"I'll put this in my back pocket for safety!" Just after saying the ground is muddy! You're risking a knife in the back doing that mate! One slip in that mud and that knife is going straight in your back!
We in north India take out the pulp add little sugar, salt red chilly and green cilantro , garlic(optional) and eat it quickly... because its gets bitter quickly.... Its a winter fruit here and is best enjoyed in sun 😎... Its tastes amazing the way I told u so please give it a try
"My name is Citrus Maximus Gargantuan, commander of the orchard and grower of the biggest citrus known to mankind" ... This should be on a plaque at the entrance to your orchard
pomelo is very handy for citrus breeding, its DNA adds sweetness to the seedlings, and it is the only citrus that doesn't have some seeds that are an exact copy of the parent ( non - parthenogenesis ) in other words it's babies (seeds ) have 1/2 mother's DNA and 1/2 fathers DNA, other citrus have some seeds that are just copies of the parent.
I have planted the seeds and had about 4-6 small plants/trees in a height of more than one meter (took like 6-7 years in Sweden). As we need to move my dear friend Marco-Antonio adopted them, so I hope he will take really good care of them! When I move to a warmer climate I defiantly will grow these citrus trees as the whole family loves them. Mostly the red ones but also the honey pomelo (white flesh).
I had to replace all of my citrus trees this year. My orange and grapefruit trees died in the Texas winter storm. I replace them with a republic of Texas orange tree and a Meyer lemon tree. I’m also growing a flying dragon, that I will use as a rootstock for grafting next year.
I can't tell you how grateful I am to have come across your channel! I am beginning my garden journey this year in Wisconsin, USA. I seem to have found myself doing a number of things wrong, fixing or adapting, and then making it right or using it as a learning experience! Your expertise, as well as your personality, has made this learn - as - I - go process a bit easier! Thank you so much for the content you put out. I greatly appreciate it!
Thank you for always sharing such wonders as a fruit tree first giving fruit, I can't grow many things in my current living conditions but hope to one day have such a great family orchard like you
It can be white inside too depending on the variety. The tree grows big. Pretty common plant in Bangladesh. You can make a cap out of the skin. Real funny.
Loving these videos, it's my dream to have semi-self sufficient property. You are giving me a lot of inspiration even though I live in a different climate so I can't really grow what you have. Just to see someone doing it is really motivational.
You have done your best to invent every new things in growing all sorts of plants. I mean how the whole world peel pummelo to make it appealing to eat and you cut it like a lemon, how the whole world grows dragon fruits by trellis and you grow it without, and how you use eggs feed your trees etc. Even though it all fails from my point of view but I have to acknowledge it's brilliant efforts and is very entertaining.
I don’t want to compare citrus size, but my grandmother in Houston (tx) had a 30ft tall grapefruit tree that produced HUNDREDS of fruits as big, some even bigger than the ones you have shown. She passed in 2013, but I believe the tree still exists, producing fruit for the new homeowners. Gotta love grandma’s homegrown grapefruit!
In Vietnam we use the peels of the pomelo for hair nourishment, it actually works very well. Just simply dry it up and boil it in water, you can use the the tea to rinse you hair with. I can still remember the lovely smell 🤗
Looks delicious, I’m thinking the ones I’ve seen at the store are inferior to fresh ones. When I used to live in Florida, I’d eat oranges from a friend’s tree and they were heaven, better than anything I’ve ever found at the store. Great video 😃🤗
My neighbor growing up had a 20 foot tall red pomelo, I stole a fruit off it when I was 10 years old and was mind blown by such an enormous fruit! I remember it tasting very similar to the way you described
Pomelo is one of the best fruit out there, we don't cut straight through the middle but score the outside and peel it like an orange 😂 also I believe the reds taste sweeter than the normal one according to my mom 👀 your pomelo tree looks amazing!
Pomelo is good for people with hypertension. It's filling too. You can dip it with just salt. It amplifies also the taste. You can also make it as a salad with cucumber and other stuff. I always envy your garden. I could only wish going to Australia
One of my favourite fruit to eat. My kids love it too! It’s easiest to just cut the ends off the top and bottom, then score the pith a few times and peel the chunks off by hand. Basically peel it whole.
I agree. Tried a red Pomelo for the first time. Really like the taste. Looking to grow one in my yard. Thank you for the information. Appreciate your post and humor. 🙂
Fellow Aussie here and Viet. Watching your video was amazing. Grew my pomelos from seeds for the fun of it. 4 years now and I’m going to patiently wait for fruit. Yes the pink flesh pomelo is so much sweeter. My sister’s home grown avocado tree was our first lesson on how long seed grown trees take to fruit!!! Year on year though, the trees do give in abundance. Your channel is so calming and refreshing. We have to go back to the basics of loving our planet, growing and giving back. In return this yields nutritional foods. Ya just can’t get the delight of the extraordinary flavours from store bought fruit and veggies . New subbie for sure!! 👏🏻👏🏻💕🌱👩🌾🪴
My mom grows these in Honolulu. They are sweet and juicy. My niece packs the back of her SUV with a week's harvest and sells them at the local farmers market. She bring home enough money to pay for the water and the fertilizer. We eat these by making supremes, taking the membranes out of the pith and the segment wrappers. A bowl full of supremes is better that a properly prepared grapefruit for breakfast!
I loved your intro, lol! I really needed a good giggle and that did the trick! Thank you for taking the time to share with us this very unique fruit. When you opened it up I thought immediately of grapefruit too. If I ever see one of these citrus fruits, I will defiantly try one or two out!
I Love how you keep 3000% !! You stay completely human with the explanations, tutorials, show & tell grammer & all. It's Awesome!!! Keep Up The Great Work!! 👍👍👍👍
Great Video! I live in germany, so I can only grow these beauties in pots, but even then the taste is great! Would never want to miss them in my garden. 🍊
Pomelo spicy salad with black salt and chili flakes are the best or with green chili and a drop of Mustard oil. Its good for sore throat and relief from cough. It's grown abundantly in the Northeastern part of India.
During the Feast of Tabernacle the citron branch ( with fruit attached) combined with palm and willow branches, combined with a joyous dance. Leviticus 23:39-40. Some versions say fruit, the fruit originally used was the citron. Thanks for the videos
Fantastic to be living somewhere , where you can grow such fabulous pomelos and other tropicals. The tree looks so healthy. The size of that fruit became apparent as soon as you picked it up. I use the 'rind' to make the candied peel sweet treats. I bet the juice is lovely mixed with some grated zest and crushed ice! Enjoy!
You Sir are a special person not only because you are awesome gardener you are a Veterans who served a great country and the world like you are doing right now. Thank you for making videos.
Hello self sufficient I really enjoyed watching your videos. I Really like your garden, me and my husband are going back to the Philippines for good and we’re going to live and our farm also, watching your videos give me an idea what we’re going to plant. Thank you keep up the good work!
Great to see you in Vietnam. Not really sure which variety you tried is but you might know there are quite a few different types of them. The three most popular ones in Vietnam are "Buoi Dien" (Northern Vietnam, Hanoi), "Buoi Da Xanh" and "Buoi Nam Roi" (Southern Vietnam, Hochiminh). They are all great!
Pomelo this is what u call them ! It's in every home in our village in India. We used to survive on this and mangoes in summer 15 years ago. There's white and red varieties.
In most Chinese dialects, the word Big Citrus and Great Auspiciousness sounds exactly the same, so polemoes become hot items during Chinese New Year in most of Southeast Asia. And if you peel the skin and pith carefully you can get a good head-sized bowl that we kids used to make silly hats with.
Pomelo is great! You can actually eat the rind when cooked, braise it! I can't really grow citrus outdoors here so I don't have any citrus tree myself, you're a lucky guy. I've only got black walnuts
Aside from durian, our city is famous for pomelo. I heard from growers that the tree needs to be close to a flowing water source for it to be very citrusy. From Davao, Philippines. 🍊
These are very popular fruit in northern part of India ..instead of using a knife to cut in half, peeling off the skin is much easier ( like orange). Once skin off , smaller pieces can be separated easily.
