i guess going broke is the new influencer flex?

why DO so many influencers go broke? let’s start with the delusional belief that the influencing money will last forever. that the popularity you may currently have on your chosen social media platform, will just continue growing - unfortunately, it doesn’t always work like that. Spending everything that you earn and THEN some, on frivolous things like designer handbags and shoes, flying on private jets and leasing range rovers and g-wagons is only going to send you broke. But I get it. When you suddenly start earning more money that you ever expected, it can burn a hole in your pocket. Saving and investing seems so boring compared to shopping trips and luxury hauls. But getting in control of your finances is SO important - and empowering! I dont care if you earn $20 an hour or $2000. Learning about personal finance, so that YOU control your money instead of it controlling you - is SO important.
I speak from experience. I used to be $27,000 in debt, and I was in my early 20s! Honestly, I’m not even sure what I spent it on, because I had nothing to show for it. When I realised the mess I was in, you best believe I started to learn about money, because I did NOT like the stress and worry that debt bought along with it.
Here’s a few of my favourite books and podcasts on money:
- Dave Ramsey! His books are what I read when I needed to get out of debt (I know some people think he’s a bit rude (and he can be), but he also has very solid advice surrounding debt!)
- 'You are a badass at making money' book by Jen Sincero
LOVE YOU GUYS!!

I cleaned my debt up in my twenties, had a perfect credit score, then got divorced and filed for bankruptcy in my thirties. Then when you file for bankruptcy, they bombard you with buying a car and opening credit cards. It's just another trap to get you back into the cycle. I now have no debt, no credit cards and buy everything locally. I REFUSE to get caught again. I also live waaayyyyy below the poverty level, on purpose, because I've taught myself to only purchase necessities. I might buy something nice once a year, but not often. Second hand items are my favorite. I know this is extreme, but I believe mass consumption is a SEVERE problem with society and community. I would like to create a new way of LIVING. We learn a lot of that in math class, though. I remember those word problems about how to calculate interest and compound interest, especially. Schools don't have time to teach us everything, but they teach us critical thinking skills and basic math, which should be a good start for learning the rest. I know it's not a popular opinion, but I don't think a lack of knowledge of these things is the main problem - it's folks spending to impress others and thinking the money will never dry up.

It breaks my heart to think that young women watch these influencers and believe that what they are showing them is true or desirable. Why are we raising girls (primarily girls) to either not be able to see what is true or not, or to crave something that is so empty and illusory? I think, as parents, we have failed abjectly. I think the experience of body dysmorphia/disordered eating is the only thing most will have in common with Christie. While I agree to an extent, it is very hard for some people to escape the pressure and influence of what is portrayed in social media, the media in general, and pressure from friends. Financial responsibility is not taught to most kids or teens, and many people go bankrupt. There are also many financial institutions (ie credit card companies) that promise people easy funds. They purposely prey on susceptible people. Yes vanity is a problem but there are a ton of institutions enabling spending. The phrase “keeping up with the Joneses” is around for a reason too. I dunno. There are just a lot of influences and not a lot of education about the consequences.

How often will you use it? Think about it and then come back to it and see if you really need it or if it was just a temporary urge to get it. You don't need designer bags. Get a normal one with more space to carry your things.

My dad worked for decades with people who struggled financially. Here are a few things that he taught me: 1. Write your expenses down. EVERYTHING. If you can, on paper, because that forces you to really focus on them. Then break them down in two categories: NEED (Bills, mortgage, gas, food...) and WANT (home decor, hobbies,...). Break the WANT section down again into categories (e g. cosmetics, clothing,...) Then dig deeper: What are things that I don't need to buy, if I'm tight on money? 2. Calculate your income: At first, subtract the money that you will need this month (for the NEED category mentioned above) from your income. This is money that you can not spend for anything else. Then see how much is left after that. For the rest: Divide it by the days until you get your next income. This will leave you with an amount that you can spend on one day, for example 20$. If you stay below that, good for you. If you get over it because you have more expenses, try to save those 20$ on the next day. 3. Always try to save some money for hard times. Not everybody has the means to invest their money. No amount is too small to be saved. If you save 10$ per month, you have 120$ at the end of the year. It may seem like nothing, but even the small amounts can help you out in times of need or a crisis. I don't think anybody will actually find this comment, but if you do, maybe you find something helpful in it. Also, English is not my first language, so I apologize for spelling/grammar mistakes or wording things weirdly.

I think people who call themselves influencers should nowadays be called social media parasites. 😂

My parents told me to buy fancy shet only if you have money, never take loans or EMIs. Youll end up paying more than what the item is actually worth.

I saw an advertisement for a €10,000 loan on my bank's site. Curious, I looked at the terms. If you take it, you overpay by €2,000. That's 20%. 20%! Yeah, no. If I want something, I save for it.

Yes, majority dress normal of course high quality clothes with no designer labels everywhere
@andin916
@andin916 Месяц назад
@@RussiaisAriddle-ih6bg Exactly… some will occasionally throw in a designer piece here and there (I was a country club kid 😂) and some expensive jewelry for a night out but they don’t buy dozens of ridiculously overpriced items and let them collect dust in the collect 🤦‍♀️ if someone goes around constantly wearing a lot of designer labels and expensive jewelry everyone thinks they are just trying to look rich 🤑😂

@RussiaisAriddle-ih6bg let me correct you. They buy clothes with no conventional labels on them. Every brand we consider a luxury, lv, ysl, d&g and others of that level, exist to make the average joe feel expensive...
@andin916
@andin916 25 дней назад
@@user-ph4nj1ds3n Actually, you are mostly correct. I do know some who would buy them, but honestly I don’t even think they realized what was luxury and just liked it 😂 they like to dress well, good quality and stuff, but my mom and I would intentionally refuse to wear any designer stuff… even if it was given to us 😂 we just felt like it was tacky to flash your $. My friends were super rich and we all shopped at stores like the gap and limited…. It was considered bad taste to flaunt wealth

I don’t even think half of these influencers are actually going broke. They are just clever enough to read the economic climate and know that they need empathy from viewers to keep their likes and views up.

10 yrs ago I believe I came across you doing makeup. Now you talk about the rich, celebrities, and scandals while delivering eye candy footage. I think what cracks me up the most is that you dress down, seem humble, and mention often you make only enough to pay your bills. With views like yours, Id imagine your doing well. Brilliant hustle girl. 😊👍

Bankruptcy doesn't always signify that a business is failing. In the U.S., many companies file for bankruptcy to streamline operations, reduce debt, and cut costs. Chapter 11 bankruptcy is a frequent option, enabling businesses to address financial issues through reorganization.

I think there should be classes about money, taxes, loans, etc. in school. I am lucky to have parents to help me with alot of this, but alot of people don’t. And then they end up doing stupid shit or believing credit cards are «free» money.

Steph thank you for saying that you were in debt, I’m in debt too and I look back and can barely tell you anything that I used that money for. Because of that I have a lot of shame and embarrassment and it always feels like everyone’s doing better than me, I’m on a journey and hope to be debt free one day! Thanks for keeping it real 💯

Invest and reuse things until you physically can't anymore. That's what I learned growing up with less money. I remember getting bullied a few years after graduating high school because i still wore clothes i wore in high school. They fit and were in great condition because i took care of them so why get new clothes? I spend money on things i need to live, not things to fit in with societal standards and trends.

I love to solo travel. I do it every year since 2016. However this year I'm not because I have a new plan (graduate school and saving for a house) I'll still travel later down the road but I believe in living within my means. Yes I spend a few thousand for comfort (I know my standards and what I will never experience again) but I also know the importance of not winding up broke. These people live for others rather than living for themselves. If you want a designer bag that's fine but do it for yourself.
