Sorry this has taken so long to come out: it proved to be trickier to edit than anticipated. I should probably cut myself some slack, as this is the length of a movie. Hope you enjoy it regardless!
I have been following you for years. Your voice has given me many hours of pleasurable company in my solitude. I miss bad movie beatdowns, you probably won't return there. But no matter what you do, fly high.
Great video, Brain. Of the movies discussed here I have seen, I didn't really like May December, was kinda with Saltburn until the ending, really liked The Killer, and almost feel like I'm on an island in thinking Eileen was one of the best of last year. Hit Man and The Bikeriders sound really cool too.
Really enjoyed this episode! I never attended a film festival so hearing you talk about your experience at one with a fellow attendee was pretty amazing. Will you be covering other film festivals on your podcast in the future?
Fantastic video Mathew and Jack, I've seen The Killer and really enjoyed it, the dark humour worked for me (But my favourite Fincher movie is The Game so that's me) did not care for May December just not for me, but I am really looking forward to Hit Man which I think is out in June and I will keep my eye on the another films when they come my way. 👍👏
I was really hoping you would cover The Zone of Interest. I couldn't look away from the screen, but I couldn't tell you what I 'liked' about it. I also didn't think I would want to watch it again, but I keep thinking about it, and it makes me feel I need to see it again. It's probably the best film that I wouldn't recommend. I'm sure your thoughts on it would be fascinating.
So fun! How does the festival work? Multiple films a day? Are you invited exclusively or you just buy a "day pass" (is that an American term?)? How'd you make your new friend here? (asking because in a video you made a loooong time ago, you mentioned a time you saw a terrible movie in theaters and wished you had made friends with this random guy who hated it just as much). Anyway, glad y'all had fun!😊
I had Press access to the festival, which gave me access to the press screenings for the festival, where they hire out an entire cinema for several days. They've got a schedule covering every screen, so it becomes about trying to schedule yourself around what is being screened when and what to see. I met Jack before Hit Man, he recognised me in the line as he is a fan of mine. Got chatting and hung out for some of the festival. I definitely had a better time socialising this past fest than the one before too, which helped.
I have to be honest I haven't been impressed with Jodie Comer in anything I've seen her in yet. Killing Eve, The Last Duel, Free Guy, and now Bikeriders (got to see that at AFI). She's just too technical of a performer to give anything vulnerable or authentic. And speaking as someone from Chicago, she does not nail the accent. Like, at all.
