You have to admire a country where people moved tons of clay to raise little mounds in the boggy landscape so they could have a drier place to build their houses. It's amazing to see these "terps" with small hamlets and villages built on them in Fryslaan and Groningen.
This land reclamation also singlehandedly allowed the Dutch to become one of the world's biggest agricultural countries by volume produced. That soil is one of the most fertile in the world.
Fun fact: somewhere in the carribean is a little island called 'Saint Martin'. One side of the island is part of the netherlands while the other side is part of France. So technically the netherlands borders france as well Edit: you got a point. Technically its not 'The Netherlands' but rather 'Kingdom of The Netherlands'. Still a fun fact thouh
Technically Sint Maarten is a separate country within the Kingdom of the Netherlands and the Netherlands does not have a land border with France, the Kingdom of the Netherlands does though.
yeah but ALL the Dutch people actually care about their homeland not being underwater. the people with any power to do anything in Florida don't actually give a fuck about Florida and will happily exploit it till it's underwater leaving the rest of the people living there to drown as they board private jets to escape
If you want any hydro-engineering done, go to the Dutch. No one, absolutely no one has the expertise they have. Greetings to our amazing neighbors from Hamburg.
'Sir we need more land. are we going to take over parts of belgium? Or germany?' 'No we are going to remove the sea this time.' 'But sir-' 'DID I STUTTER??'
I actually live on Flevoland, the new land that was created by the Dutch. And It's so interesting how the only history we have here on Flevoland is from pirate ships that sunk here century's ago 😂
The island is called Flevoland, existing out of two so called 'Flevopolders' and forms together with Urk and the Noordoostpolder the province of Flevoland. The provincial anthem of Flevoland is a victory song on this battle of the War against Water. Flevoland is the biggest artificially created island.
Don’t forget the town of Driestloplamekunt in Termotopdyk which is part of Oostveer West but stretched into Noord Oost Westerbiet, half of Groenenbergje and together with Flufferboff forms the province of Gollerproddavadeel
@@saludenagua, it's not cap, as they've actually built land. Also, i understand that you understand what was said/typed and that you're referring specifically to the term/word "build/build land", as in how does one "build" land. Anyhow, i simply felt the want to express that, as people like you seem to slightly annoy me along with the grammar police type of people "you give that vibe". Now with that said, i have NO issue(s) with sharing knowledge with others. In fact, i highly encourage people to do so in order help each other grow. However, to do so with the sole intent/purpose to make fun, degrade, discredit another is in my personal opinion to be both weak minded and pathetic. Not to mention that doing so also speaks volume to ones intellectual intelligence and/or lack of, character, insecurities etcétéra. Psychology is a powerful tool, to which it could be used for both good and/or bad. Cheers Eri.✌🏼🇨🇦
@@saludenagua Look up Flevoland, Noordoostpolder, Afsluitdijk, or just the word polder. We really did turn a sea into a lake and "built" land in what once was water. You may have heard of Schiphol, our biggest airport (and one of Europe's biggest) - roughly half a millennium ago that was a sea where we fought the Spaniards...
1 more thing; The piece that is red coloured at the beginning of the video is not the only part, also the sort of ''round / circly'' part above it has been made.
so basically what the dutch did was build a circular wall inside a lake, then pump out the water inside and poof. New land, well suited for farming and habitable.
As a dutch man its fun to see how special this is for the rest of the world and how normal it is for us here. Fun little detail, i was born in Flevoland wich is in Lelystad and Lelystad is the man build ground you can see in this video.
Eh wah? It's probably the other way around. I was born in Lelystad, which is in Flevoland. Lelystad is the city and Flevoland the province. Greetings from another one born in Lelystad.
The original plan was to remove the whole watery bit in the middle "het ijselmeer" but we realized that by building "the afsluitdijk" we had created a huge new ecosystem, which we decided to preserve
The Netherlands used to be gigantic and connected to the UK by an area known as Doggerland. That area was a prime hunting ground for seasonal hunter-gatherer nomads before the ice shield disappeared, together with parts of Germany, the UK, Sweden, Finnland and Norway. They mainly hunted mammoths and reindeer. It's also for that reason that people in those countries tend to be rather tall and why the Dutch are taller than everyone else in Europe.
It may be insane, but it works. Dutch engineers also created Canvey Island in the Thames estuary East of London, most of the streets on the island are named after the engineers who created the island.
Fun fact: There are actually plans to polder doggerland (admittedly not very good ones). This is an area of the North Sea between the Netherlands and England which is relatively shallow and was at the surface during the last ice age.
It was a plan from engineer Lely who also had the plan to fill the whole zuiderzee with land, only leaving some parts of water for the towns on the 'new land'. The Dutch also help country's around the world with the same problems and build, dikes, bridges and al other sorts of stuff that has a relation with water.
we did not use windmills to create Flevoland (which also includes the noord-oost polder, btw). We used modern pumping systems for that that use electricity.
Living in the Netherlands for 2 years. Beautiful country, so sad to see their big cities completely rotten, making you feel you are not in the Netherlands.
I am dutch and in all honesty i truly believe we should give that piece of land back to the sea, the people are more artificial there than the land they live on
People have been saying that Florida and Cali are going to be underwater soon for years and years as well, but I've learned not to take those people seriously lol
Netherlands to germany: give land. Germany: no. Netherlands to belgium: give land. Belgum: no Netherlands: *wadels to sea* give land, I dident hear no.
