I was about to comment this.

I’ve experienced this firsthand as a cook performing dishpit duties in a longterm care facility, when washing the glasses especially the really old ones, often times when they’re pulled from the washing machine, they will literally explode in your hand as soon as you grab it. Scary shit.

Yup all of our cups were BPA free plastic, kind of have to when you wash dozens at a time

Huh you know that explains it happening to me at my home. Washing machines have this "sanitize" option that keeps the temp very high for a long period of time. Makes me wonder what its doing to my plates.

Generally this applies to thinner glassware like champagne flutes and wine glasses, as well as handmade stuff. If it's just a normal tall/short kitchen glass with a thicker base and walls . . . the chances of stress corruption are really really low. The manufacturing and quality control processes usually weed out the flawed stuff. Restaurants and othe facilities buy TONS of glassware, usually at the lowest prices. These two factors combine to make fractures wayyy more common than they are in households.

Holy shit! This perfectly explains that time in school when my friend's glass just exploded out of nowhere during lunch! Oh well, turns out she didn't have undiscovered telekinetic powers afterwall...

Yea, there was a couple experiments that went so wrong after hours or days of a process I would have happily destroyed some of the cheaper glassware from it, though the fact it would have to be cleaned properly first ruins the moment it would be cathartic

I think the energy comes from anticipation: If nothing goes wrong, one might start to think something ought to go wrong, if at least for the thrill of it. But I think that sentiment goes away with time, or danger level. [No fluoride scientist wants things to go wrong... the reactions can be very dangerous [like exploding] and very dangerous to human life. So I heard from the Chem prof with industry experience. I think it's still funny though to see where mad scientists may come from; "I can defy nature with science!" [see raspberry perfume video] and "[Safely does thing that very much looks unsafe and destructive to outsiders]" [this video]. I think a lot of scientists are still sane but videos like this one are hilarious in a dilute form compared to watching people rant about conspiracies; There's something crazy going on in their minds but they're functioning alright for now so it's okay to leave them as they are.
