I used to work in Sales at our local Audi dealer years ago, and I was in the local paper because I won a Saloon car championship in 2004. These two brothers who both had mental health problems used to catch the Bus once a week to come and see us. They would walk straight in and say that they were the owners of Audi worldwide and that some new designs were coming. They would then present a sketch pad of 'child like' drawings of cars and were dead serious about them. I was one of few who would put up with them and would listen and just go along with it all because they would then leave after a few minutes. One day, just before Xmas, they came into the showroom and left a big bag in the middle of the floor and left. I was on the phone so I couldn't speak to them, everyone else dealing with customers etc. Anyway, a customer told reception what had just happened and she called the police who told us all to evacuate because it could be a bomb! So within 30 secs or so, the alarms were triggered and everyone had to get out! The Police called in the Bomb disposal team (took 2hrs for them to arrive) only for them to say it was a Scalextric set wrapped up in xmas paper with a label addressed to me!! Embarrassing or what? My Boss was not happy! Ps, I ended up giving the set to a local Childrens home. (We did set it up first for a few races first mind!!) Lol

Sounded very much like that, my mum was like yours when my dad passed she was at his side at the hospital, I took her home, made a cup of tea for her and then she wandered off to her room… only to return in her coat and boots, enquiring if we were going over to see how dad was. The police advice may sound a bit odd, however I’d have been tempted to call NHS24 and get their take on the situation.

A neighbour went like that for her last two years. When the guy who serviced her car suggested (maybe prompted by her daughter) that he would like to buy it both us and her daughter were saying "What a good idea. I am a retired Cop. Sadly your story does not surprise me. I will defend the police who work on the street until the cows come home, but... I have no doubt you did not speak to a police officer but to a civvy (sorry Police Staff). I was almost pleased to hear the story coming from 'uup North' because I thought it was only in the South West that we have gone completely bonkers. The Police Service is now run by Woke officers whose only concern is how they appear to who they believe are the public. They want to be seen as caring and accepting and huggable. What they don't understand is that what the real public want to see is a police officer at their door when they report a crime - that is what affects what impression the public have about the police. Thefts, burglary, damage are easy for the police to 'right off' at an early stage but a completely unpredictable person in an unending situation frightens them to death. I'm not surprised no one attended. Police officers time is now taken up being untrained Social Workers. I enjoyed your story though :)

@Anditover
@Anditover 7 месяцев назад
@claire4486 Well discrimination or not, the dealer still has a duty of care. Yes there are "eccentrics" out there, Britain has a proud history of them, but the lady wasn't being rational. Her lapses in recollection might even be indicative of schizophrenia, or side effects from medication that preclude her from driving. And a license really only shows that she was competent to drive at the time of the test, but although in the vid the presenter was at pains to point out that the test drive went well, and she knew about cars... that doesn't necessarily mean she is fit to drive. Her confusion whilst almost mildly comic, could be extremely dangerous when she is behind the wheel.... or not, we don't know, and because there's doubt, when you are making a decision that could have serious consequences, you have to err on the side of caution AND protect the subject from harm too. I think that a full refund was the right thing to do under the circumstances, and if he had her details from taking a copy of her driving license, then a call to Social Services might have been better than talking to a cretin in a police call centre.

You did everything right there Lee, good job the lady came to you ( and not some cowboy) for a car and was treated respectfully. First thing that came to my mind was that does she actually have a licence, insurance etc? and even if she had, should she even be on the road? I had a customer that wanted to test drive a C1, the car had just come off the transporter from the auctions so we had not checked it over so I asked him to come back for a test drive once we knew that the car was safe. He went up the wall, "You should not be buying cars that are not safe!" I tried to explain to him that the car is probably safe to drive, but that I simply wanted to make sure. He was not having none of it, and was going to report me to trading standards etc, etc. He stormed off, only to return about ten minutes later asking for a test drive in another car that was on the same transporter, a Fiesta. Again, I said no for the same reasons. He just walked away calmly saying nothing this time. Two days later he turned up again, but wanted to test drive a totally different car that was fully prepared for retail, BMW X1. Obviously the alarm bells were ringing out loud, what next? simply tell him to do one, which would very probably make things worse because it would hurt his feelings, or I could take him on a test drive in the BMW as a passenger? That is what I did, just take him out for a test drive with me driving, he was over the moon with the car and wanted to buy it there and then. Obviously there was something wrong, so I told him that before I could take any money from him, it would have to be approved by his family, thankfully he said no problem, and gave me his Son's phone number. Eventually got through to his Son (why do folks have a mobile phone and not answer the bloody thing?) he said please hold on, "I will be there asap", to be fair, he did arrive sooner than I thought he would. His Dad is struggling with Alzheimer's, and has never driven a car in his life. PS. Well done yet again to the cops, folks have no respect for them anymore. It does make you think that do we really need them anyway?

Did the lady's first name begin with a 'H' by any chance and is she in her late 40's/early 50's? Only I live near to Crewe and one of my neighbours fits this lady's description. If it's the same woman, she has a severe mental illness and suffers extreme paranoid delusions, to the point she carries her worldly possessions in a suitcase whenever she ventures out, and chains her doors and gate up. Sadly, her driving skills are somewhat lacking and it's amazing she even possesses a license by today's standards. It seems she gets into accidents fairly regularly and buys replacement cars instead of waiting to have them repaired. Sometimes, we see her in a car we thought she'd gotten rid of - she is possibly storing them somewhere in reserve. Sadly, her parents died quite some time ago and she doesn't appear to have any other family. She seems to have fallen into a void in the system, as her parents left her the house where she resides alone. Occasionally, she is visited by mental health workers on wellbeing checks, but won't answer the door to them, which results in the police and fire service being called out to gain access. Obviously a very sad story as she clearly needs help and supervision to prevent her being taken advantage of.

Lee, I worked for West Yorkshire Police for 15 years and this story does not surprise me. When the cuts came in under Theresa May's conservative government, this is the attitude that came in. Rather than dealing with problems, to save money, time and effort it became a big process of what should we actually be dealing with, who else's problem can it be? It all became a process of passing the book. Even dealing with drunken idiots in town, rather than locking them up for being drunk and disorderly, it became a thing to say ah no, they are drunk and incapable so the custody suite is not a safe place for them, get an ambulance, send them to the hospital. That's what all the services became, especially around mental health. Mental health has become a major issue in society, and there is still no provision to deal with it. In fairness to the police, the public do think that the police are the one stop solution to everything, then wonder why there aren't any police to deal with crime anymore, because they are tied up dealing with people suffering with mental health, and the police are not qualified or equipped to deal with it. So, as much as I understand your frustration, it shouldn't be your problem, I hope this kind of gives a bit of an insider view of where the response came from.

Most people have heard the expression Manic Depression or bipolar disorder. Patients occilate between 3 phases ie depression, normal and hypomanic ( colloquially often called manic or high ). One symptom of the hypomanic state is major ovespending ,the patient will buy allsorts and empty any family bank accounts they have access to and take on major credit if its being offered. One warning sign of this phase is that they talk very rapidly ( pressure of speech ) and jump from one subject to another ( flight of ideas) . It's very treatable with medication to bring the mood back to normal ( takes 1 to 4 weeks ) then different medication to keep the mood stable . You handled the situation very well, and im surprised the Police said you should have sold her the car . Lots of unscrupulous salesmen would have done their best to keep the money, not give it back.

4:30 I was aware the MK2 KA shared a platform with the Fiat 500; when I began looking at them I realised it shared its 1.2L petrol engine with the 500. It was only after I bought one I realised it basically *was* a Fiat 500.

I have read that Ford did their usual suspension tuning on the Ka and it was so good Fiat then decided to use it for their Abarth.

Police call centre staff are normally civilians but I’ve noticed from story’s I’ve read they seem to know it all and start being almost like lawyers giving out advice incorrect of course but god knows where the ambulance and doctor on stand by for all the car dealerships came from 😂😂😂

Hi Lee. Sad that the old lady could be taken advantage of by others - but you saw the real picture and put things right. I have to say that’s refreshing to hear in this day and age. Good luck with prepping the cars taking up room on the pitch and may your sales continue. Dave Birmingham

Bloody hell, terrible advice, but I suspect it was a call handler who, like the average doctor's receptionist who thinks they are a doctor, thinks they are Police and can give advice, it's ridiculous.

Quality episode. I live in France (on off 20 years, currently 5yrs), run holiday lets. Recently advertised the houses for sale, fancy a move back to UK, run a business there. You've put me off, im staying here. You've reminded me how hard work some people can be and partly why I left in the first place. I always watch with interest, keep up the good work.

@FTFLCY I have a business in uk and france. Ofcourse issues can happen anywhere. I never have any problems in France, ever in 20 years, always respectful. Uk 80% good, 20% dicks. Neighbours - dicks Neighbours in france, cut my grass when locked in uk during covid, Neighbours in uk saying what you doing here, sod off back where you come from

It was a tongue in cheek generalisation, im not green. Of course, it could happen, anywhere But, I get no grief in France. I have a UK business (14 years) where we get a fair bit of grief. Theres way more respect in france. Uk houses get ransacked. France houses get left immaculate.@@FTFLCY

@@LeeUK2I don't blame you for leaving the UK. I've left a couple of times when I was younger, and sadly ended up returning. It is like living in an open prison, so I wouldn't bother coming back anytime soon! Hoping I can get away soon, just saving the dosh!

Yup. Bear with me on this....went to my local Toyota last year to buy a car, no sales person came out while waiting outside for 10 mins,popped in & reception informed sales,waited 5 mins some1 came out & he spoke to another person (fair enough) waited 5 mins then left lol Went to a used car place saw a car & paid CA$H over 5 grand....got £200 off too. Main dealers jst want customers to go inside,to them lol They sit in their office in the warmth,taking calls & emails. They lost my custom! 3 yrs ago i paid cash for my 4x alloys to be refurbed....saved £50 with ca$h.

The person you have spoken to is as you suggest a Call Handler and not a warranted Police Officer. Whilst they receive training their skills are limited in both Law knowledge and how best to interact for reasonable advice or critical thought. What you were told is ridiculous but it reflects badly on warranted Police Officers most of whom would have understood your situation and aligned their opinion with your own.

Having retired 30 yrs ago as a Police Sergeant I doubt you were talking to an officer you were probably talking to a civilian officer person. What that person was getting confused about is if someone is suffering from a mental breakdown and a family member asks for police assistance sometimes if disruptive they may have to be taken to a police staton as a place of safety. Then it is arranged for a social worker to attend who then contact a doctor to attend who is qualified under the mental health act to examine that person and if needed sign an emergency order for that person to be taken for assessment to a psychiatric unit. I have dealt with numerous people throughout my service who have had a breakdown I'm afraid the person you spoke to had got it totally wrong. It can usually be a 3 or 4 hour exercise with the delay usually being social services. A good many policemen don not know what to do and usually dump the problem on the charge office sergeant.

Good on you for looking out for that lady, she was obviously very vulnerable. It definitely sounds right that the person you spoke to wasn't a police officer, any police I have spoken to have at least made sense. I'd be interested to see the progress with the Aveo. I had one of those brand new in 2012. It was identical to a Corsa D under the bonnet! It was an LT model and quite well specced although the 1.2 engine was a bit small for it and it wasn't really that economical either. I liked the oddball styling though!

@24:26 COMMON SENSE. 😮 Sadly lacking amongst many people today…. Have been watching your uploads for a while now on you tube, you definitely seem like a totally straight upfront guy, plus why the heck would you put videos up online if you were a crook?! Some customers are very hard work…. I definitely believe this lady has dementia of some sort, it seems ridiculous the police were so dismissive…. Sometimes we get it wrong, but I definitely believe in “trust your gut instinct“ and it seems like you knew from the very beginning that something wasn’t right.
