In the ye oldey-timey days, Nicole and I were able to drape, cut, fit, and hand sew an 18th-century gown in a single working day (our fastest make was less than 8 hours), and, for reasons I still don't understand, I decided that it would be fun for us to make a regency dress in a day. For me. Cause. Reasons.
I'm not saying it was a good idea. I'm just saying I had the idea.
I also don't really know why ‪@NicoleRudolph‬ even agreed to this idea. Maybe because she wanted me to owe her for the rest of my life??
(I'm sorry Nicole...)
OH! If you want to watch a great in-depth video about HOW to Cut and Fit a Regency bodice ON YOURSELF go here: • How to Pattern a Regen...
ANYWAYS. So. we did it. We hand sewed a c. 1812 dress in a single day, from 7:30 am to 10:00 pm. Bless Regency dresses and their simple construction and easy fitting. We were also extremely lucky that this cotton batiste fabric was lovely to work with.
The hand stitches we used were: Running stitch, hem/fell stitch and a spaced backstitch/top/prick stitch. That's it. Nothing complicated or over the top, just really easy stitching that is fast too.
So if you've ever wondered to yourself it is possible to hand sew 18th century or early 19th-century dresses in a day, by hand, this video will answer that question for you. As an added bonus: You get to weigh in on the Great Salt Debate(TM), or The Saltening of 2021. 😂

You and Nicole deserve a reality show, seriously. I would so much rather watch you guys tackle historical costume challenges than 90 day fiancé, or the Bachelorette. Makeup artists have their own show. Drag queens have their own show. It’s time for costumers to have their own show

The only reality TV show I watch each year is “Mesternes mester”, the Norwegian version of “Champion of champions”, where ten former professional athletes compete against each other in various disciplines, some more unusual than others. A few of the disciplines that always appear are “iron grip” (hang for as long as you can from a horizontal bar using only your hands) “90°” (sit for as long as you can with your knees and hips forming 90° angles, without a seat) and “Sysifos” (roll an exercise ball filled with water up and down a hill a few times; some years the weight of the ball has been proportional to each competitor, other years it’s been 60 kg for females and 80 kg for males). Other possible disciplines may include a duathlon, or an obstacle course with a tangram puzzle.

I know it’s not historical costuming specifically, but Netflix has a show called “Next in Fashion” where designers compete in a reality show format. They create outfits from scratch each week based off the prompts/challenges and it is actually really entertaining.

@@lorisewsstuff1607 my own modern seamstress/tailor/dressmaker hires someone to do all the pressing and steaming (except for the wedding dresses) because she does such a volume in military uniforms, military balls, and school dances throughout the year that she'd spend half her time pressing/steaming otherwise. She does a fair amount of fully custom stuff too but I think she does all her own pattern cutting because that's only about 30% of the business. I think it just seems logical to hire someone if you can afford to, to do the more repetitive stuff.

Luckily he has a lot of metalwork/woodwork/making things experience, so he's already good at the spatial reasoning stuff and I just need to say "mark where the excess fabric is creating a fold" and he'll do a pretty good job.

You are well and truly blessed to have friends like Nicole and Chrissy. (Fresh, homemade bagels?? Omg *drool*) This video was such a fun look at your friendship with those two beautiful people. I can, and do completely understand feeling like you’ve been hit by a truck! It’s not only mentally exhausting, but it’s physically very demanding to sit in one position for 10+ hours, not counting having to hold still for fittings. Kitchen chairs aren’t ergonomically designed for that. I’m a little in awe over how much you did in less than 24 hours. The dress is gorgeous! You know I’m not usually a regency person, but that dress makes me rethink my position. Be well, and sleep well, and have a beautiful week.

In this house the varieties of plain salt are fine-grained all-purpose salt, Maldon salt (fleur de sel) and chunky sea-salt, which can be crushed in the mortar with a pestle if necessary (which is often is, because those chunks are pretty big) or ground up using the salt grinder.

Now that I'm in my early 40s and losing weight, the bat wings are phenomenal and just completes the look. I've always hated my arms. My dad had stretch marks on his arms, so it's a genetic blessing. They’ve got a nice fabric shear that is flat on the bottom in the soft touch but the range includes rotary cutters. Pretty much everything comes in soft grip now as many of use have issues including arthritis. You might also look into compression gloves. I find those are very nice when my fibro is flaring! I just use the regular table salt here. Like salt is only needed in such tiny amounts that it seems silly to buy expensive salt for a single pinch. But then I'm more likely to omit the salt entirely or cut it down considerably to fix recipes where they seem to think that more than ¼ of a teaspoon is needed. No that makes everything really salty and therefore yucky. And don't get me started on recipes which say to use salted butter. Or people adding salt to pasta and rice water. Like I know you're "meant to" but I just find it too salty. If you don't want me to eat something just add salt to it. My Mum used to laugh at me as a kid as I used to try to brush all the salt off peanuts before eating them (before I could buy my own and choose unsalted!). Meanwhile she's adding bucketfuls to her own food. 🤣

Pre-fitting; Not A Cheat! If you were C18 mantua-makers, you'd already have shapes for your existing/valued customers, and I bet they wouldn't accept turning out a new dress from scratch in a day for a new customer! Wow! But also... hope you have recovery time! Hugs. I should show your morning-after-the-day-before "I've been reversed over several times by a long-wheel-base Landrover" to my friends who say "why don't you apply to the Sewing Bee"... when you have to make an evening dress in 7 hours, complete with tidy hem and perfect fitting!

You would do anything if there was enough money involved. 🤣 we call it a cheat, because when we used to do this at CW we WOULD cut the shapes out that morning too. This video has everything! A regency gown in a day, an off-off-off-Broadway musical, a fight about salt, Lady Demitrescu's boobs, the best of best friends, and a bit with a dog. But I think my favourite part was the binge-sewing hangover and apology at the end. That was the cherry on top.

It’s been well over a year since I started sewing on some lace around the necklace of my dress, and I still haven’t finished. TBF, it’s probably also been about a year since I felt like working on it, because as much as I enjoyed making the lace, sewing it on is not nearly as enjoyable.

Amazing job, y'all! I'm actually not surprised you feel like you've been hit by a truck. People with cronic pain have learned to recognize those first twinges that say "if I keep going, I won't be able to move tomorrow" where most people don't. I tend to overdo it all the time because I miss those twinges. Y'all did an amazing job! That was A LOT of sewing in one day, and you should be proud of yourselves 💜

Okay I am a terrible person but one of my favorite SCA events is The Quest for the Golden Seamstress. Teams dress a person in Pre-16th C clothing from the skin out in 20 hours. There is a countdown running, and you begin cutting fabric at the start and it's needles down after 20 hours. So much fun!

“All you did was sit and sew all day”. That’s why!! The mental labor and the little movements our bodies do while we sew adds up through the hours. It may be a Dutch braid that lines the front of the face and was finished as a regular braid once there wasn't any more hair to pull in. The regular braid is then circled up and probably pinned next to the Dutch braid in a conch-like pattern. Hope that helps.

I feel like I could do a dress in a day if it was a fairly simple pattern, I was doing mostly machine sewing, and I'd already cut out the fabric the day before, and that would probably still be a stretch. This...I am impressed and so very sympathetic about the hit-by-a-truck-the-next-day feels.

Yes! When I was seamstressing for a living, we would attend one or two formal galas a year and it was a bit of a competition to see who could make the coolest dress! There were typically about 5 or 6 of us. My favorite was probably the teal/red iridescent silk taffeta strapless dress with an empire waistline, straight skirt, pleated matching chiffon bodice, chiffon cape off the back bodice, and matching handmade top hat with bright red silk lining. By pure luck I found a perfect shoe to match and wore "ruby" jewelry that perfectly picked up on the subtle red in the taffeta. Thanks for reminding me of great memories!

This kind of stuff just makes me want to invite you all over for some afternoon tea and treats. You and your girls are AMAZING! You all are so supportive and silly together- just so much joy to watch! I tried to show one of my girlfriends (the only one interested even slightly in sewing) how to sew a few years ago and it left me... scarred (mentally!). Haha! She asked me to show her how to sew so we went to a fabric store, I directed her to pick out an easy pattern for her first project as well as some muslin or cotton for a dress mock-up. She chose a dress pattern that listed itself as being a 3 hour project and bout a 4 way stretch, $24 a yard, velvet brocade fabric. At home, 2 minutes into fabric cutting, she stands up holding a tiny black velvet square that's just big enough to be a loincloth and says 'Why is it so small?' And I looked to her and asked 'Did it say cut on fold?' to which she responded with 'I don't know. I didn't read anything.' I love my girls oodles but at that moment I knew this was to be a long day. All in all, at the end of 6 hours, she managed to sew the neckline to the skirt hem, attempted to sew with the sewing machine foot up and while pressing the machine foot down- full force, break 2 needles, seem-ripped almost every edge twice at least, get plenty frustrated, and gift me the remnants of her fabric before giving up. I should state that this is a woman who knits decorative sweater panels and crochets them together! She has a LOT of patience and skill!!

That day after crafting all day pain- I don't sew (yet!) but I know that feeling. I think it's that combination of adrenaline/anxiety of the final stretch of a project and being hunched over and squatting and standing in weird positions as you move around and work on stuff. Just looking directly down a lot all day can be really, really hard on the neck and shoulders, and that alone can send discomfort allll through the body. Regular scheduled breaks for quick dynamic stretches (shoulder shrugs, neck rotations) can help negate some of it (and can help prevent damage longterm if you make it a regular practice while crafting) but it really is a strong reminder of just how much work really goes into building a garment- especially in a single day!

Ok so for salt, the smaller the granules are, the bigger the surface area of saltiness of one teaspoon (or other measurement) so the smaller the granules, the less you need. I learned this from Samin Nosrat's 'Salt, fat, acid, heat' and no, I don't understand the chemistry of it either because in my mind it all melts but whatever, I started following Samin's recommendations when cooking and it works!
