Zach Johnson, the “Millennial Farmer” is a 5th-generation farmer who’s spent his life growing, working, and learning on his family’s farm. His wit and dry sense of humor appeal to children and adults alike. A product of the millennial generation, his appreciation of new technology blends with his old-fashioned work ethic, and he offers a unique ability to deliver his message in a way that resonates with lifelong farmers as well as those with no knowledge of agriculture. With growing consumer awareness about where their food comes from, Zach has identified the need for an independent voice from the front lines of agriculture. Zach actively promotes agriculture by sharing his day-to-day experiences in the agriculture world while providing farmer-to-farmer education to help facilitate a collaborative conversation between farmers and the public.

@@hawks2252 My hunch is he's also the " this isnt as bad as it could have been' type of guy. When we are young we tend to exaggerate the extent of issues but when we look back years later what at the time seemed like a major issue was in fact pretty minor in nature. We just learn to roll with the punches instead of getting all excited and bent out of shape over things.

Re the diesel gelling in the midst of winter cold--It brought back memories of oilpatch work I did in the early 80s, in the heavy oil area around Lloydminster, up in the Canadian praries. The oil was low-volume in production, from the wells, so it was stored in large storage bins, emptied by tanker trucks. The bins needed firetubes, to keep the crude oul from gelling, especially when the winter temperatures reached -40C..

8:00 Just a suggestion on the belt-burning issue. If the motor is compatible with a Variable Frequency Drive (VFD), it would allow you to control the motor rpm which "should" alleviate the leg from being over-driven. I would think the price of a couple sets of belts (not to mention the aggravation) would pay for the alteration. Regards.

I'd be tempted to install a centrifugal clutch and a chain to power the auger. I hate the smell of burnt belts. As a old Mopar mechanic, verify the belt numbers not just the part number. When belts are fabricated, they have a run serial number, as each mold is a slightly different diameter. They're close +/_ a 1/4 - 3/8 inch, but don't equally share the load.

Good afternoon from Texas. Maybe someone needs to rethink grain bin design and the criteria that is used to spec out motors, augers and conveyors. Grain bins have been in use for over a 100 years, one would think that the bugs would have all been worked out of them by now. Maybe some kind of proximity switch on the augers so that it the auger does not turn so many time a minute then a signal is sent to the control panel that turns of the auger motor. I worked at a job that had a lot of conveyors and when I conveyor stopped then we had a big mess so we installed these these proximity switches on the tail pulley, since you have belts you could install these sheave that attach to the conveyor.

You could just replace the drive pulley (the one connected to the electric motor) on that unload with one that's a bit bigger and that would both slow down the unload auger so the dual-run could keep up and also add more torque.
@999pr1
@999pr1 5 месяцев назад
Replacing the drive pulley with a larger one will increase auger speed, not decrease it. He would have to install a smaller drive pulley or a larger driven pulley to reduce speed. If it was my setup, I would install a pressure switch to detect corn building up in transition from unload auger to conveyor, wand wire that into the unload motor interlock circuit so it shuts unload off when corn builds up in transition. Need to check amp draw on both motors when un operation to see how close to full load the system is. It might be possible to speed up the CV taking corn away from the unload auger.

Some added thoughts here, the feed may not be the main issue. Drive belts were part of my career for 30 years. What I can tell you is that the notched V belts don't do what they claim they do (better grip). The theory is they wrap better. They do but they also have less surface. I always used straight V belt and had some good success with banded belts in bad drive situations. Another issue and a bigger one, sheave size relationship there is bad. You have a small sheave driving a much bigger sheave. It may be what fits in the space but you get to little wrap on too small a sheave, the means less contact area and a higher chance and sometimes a guarantee they slip and of course once they slip, that is all she wrote. It does not look like you have adjustable sheaves but those are also really bad, they are intended to be a trial to get the drive ratio right and then replaced with the correct sized fixed sheave. Cogged belts and drive can be a good answer though they are expensive and they need good alignment.
