Haha, of course I don't. Happy April 1st!....But what I do hate is the caricature of Rachmaninoff that emerged "thanks" to many various things that took place in the world between him time and ours: first were his fellow "modern" composers who , unable to create beautiful and memorable melodies, cast him as a "dinosaur", a fossil from 19th century and relegated his music to Hollywood ( he never composed for Hollywood , not for any money btw). Then came Soviet commissars - first making him into a traitor and "enemy of people" but then re-making him into this Russian patriot who was perpetually depressed and lost his creative spirit because he was away from Mother Russia (read- USSR). On their tails came the competitors of various hair colors and sizes: overweight and sweaty men who pounded poor Rachmaninoff to death recasting him from an aristocrat into their proletarian likeness , cute blondes ( or brunettes ) who made soft porn out of his noble music with their overwrought sentimentality....We totally forgot that besides being a great composer Rachmaninoff was arguably one of the best pianists ever - and not a bad conductor, right? :) So, when I hear from would-be-authorities that Rachmaninoff "plays his own 3rd concerto too fast" it really drives me crazy. His music and his playing were NEVER dripping sentimental - or aggressively bombastic. His music doesn't need a fur hat ,handkerchief or Cossack boots to be authentic. No, thank you.

I think you can… in the words of research psychologist Emanuel E. Garcia, For Scriabin. Tchaikovsky "meant a kind of music to avoid." And when it came to their own work, the two composers were not quite a mutual admiration society. Rachmaninoff biographer Victor Seroff wrote that Rachmaninoff "recognized Scriabin as an important composer in spite of their dissimilar tastes, while Scriabin was indifferent toward Rachmaninoff because he considered his music only an imitation of Tchaikovsky's, which he hated."

Y'all I'm from portugal and I understood 99% of what she said. People whoose native language is english are used to not having to speak/understand anything else, because everyone speaks english. But if you actually had to make the effort like we foreigners do, you'd understand so much better the variety of accents that there are in the planet. But you don't. Some of you were very disrespectful! She's ukranian, they have a different alphabet, their language has nothing to do with english, but she still tries her best and talks about something that touches her heart and all you have to say is that her accent is bad. You're the ones who are wrong here, not Valentina. I'd like to see you try to speak ukrainian perfectly lmao... or portuguese. Valentina you're awesome.

You hit the nail on the head. I've been married to a lovely Ukrainian woman for 14 wonderful years and still love listening to her beautiful accent every day. You're so right about English speakers (Americans particularly) who can't understand ANYone who has the slightest accent or pronunciation that differs from what they are accustomed to. Monolingual morons I call them. And thank you for making the distinction that Valentina is Ukrainian, NOT Russian, and is NOT speaking with a Russian accent. Rachmaninoff's music just seems to sparkle to me, especially his concertos. When I listen to other concertos (besides the Grieg, since they have substantial sentimental value to me) from other composers, they just do not quite captivate and immobilize me like all four of Rachmaninoff's do. Perhaps it was due to the fact that when I first thoroughly listened to his concertos, I was on a two-day road trip through deserts, mountains, forests, and canyons. True beauty of sight and sound.

I have been trying to get an answer to something that puzzles me, and perhaps you have the answer (if you read this post). Is it true that Rachmaninoff's hands were so large and had such a wide reach that for a while there were no other pianists that could play his Concerto #3? Today there are many women with much smaller hands that can play Rach 3 quite easily. I was told that the notes in that Concerto had to be changed for people with smaller hands to perform that masterpiece of music. Is that true?

Rachmaninoff... the most loved and hated composer, maybe because his music is so difficult in so diferent ways... to listen it, to interpretate, comprehension and more...you have an amazing way to see his music, as a pianist i agree with you.

When I went to college for music, I would often feel something similar - I didn't want to work on pieces I actually loved in that setting, because the process would kill some of that love. I wanted those pieces to remain 'pure'. I would rather work on something technical I can be dispassionate about. It's also true that pieces I love get me inspired to go off into wilder interpretations, and hearing "stop being so into that piece and follow the 'rules'," is something that will make you hate the process.

The more I hear her the more I love her. She is superb. Whatever she stands for I support. Russia and Ukraine spiritually are absolutely inseparable in my mind. It is just the way it is - & will be. A Ukrainian could become leader of Russia again given time - it is a two way street. She is a wonderful advocate for both worlds.

Ukrain as a country could have never even existed, it's a place that never really belonged to anyone. Not for long at least. So this is so typical, that as an artificialy created country, it's ppl feel the need of strong national unity, but this is just cancer and can only hurt you and your country this way. Rethink your ways Alex, good luck.

I know exactly how you feel, the first time I heard it it scared me, LOL! But the more I listen to it the more I fell in love with it, and now he's one of my favourite composers, but my fingers don't like him very much when I try to play his pieces on the piano! LOL! His compositions have got to be some of the most difficult for piano ever written, and I'm just an amateur, maybe it's easier for the professionals, but for me it's a nightmare trying to play, but such a joy to listen to.

She really is The Rach Girl! And I'm quoting you, Valentina. Hearing it completed, all the concertos in one recording... it really creates new feelings, new perspectives, than if you take apart each concerto. You've never hated Rach... this kind of play emerges directly from the heart, as you said. Gosh, I always get so sentimental! Lol, I still love it, btw!
