It is time to repot the Orchids we recently got from Lucke Orchideen! But some are potted in large bark chips, did I tell you they are the worse? 😭

When your bird chuckled and you, in all frustration, replied, "it's not funny!" That is why I watch your videos, that humor and charm. Well, that and all the knowledge you share. You are as delightful as you are instructive. My two gifted orchids are in dire need of help and I am an old lady with no idea what I'm doing, so you are a Godsend. Thank you so very much!

I also hate damaging roots. Because of this, I leave big hard bark chips at the root. Think if the bark chip is still hard, it can stay for some time in the pot.

Thank you! I inherited two phals, they had not bloomed or grown for years. I put them in chunky bark as you suggest for beginners, and they are having an active growing season now! I had another in a tiny moss plug that was very root bound, and put it in the chunky bark, too. Bark is messy! It is also working!

My environment made me a "bark girl" with orchids .. this year I have started using a lil bit of moss in some of my thirstier orchids (using your tested layering method) and so far it looks viable, but I am dreading winter, because the air gets very humid in autumn and then we have very serious dry and cold winter with minimal sun exposure .. my dendrobiums love this very much, even mini-phals are enjoying it but I am not so sure how will the new cattleyas and paphs I got this spring enjoy this situation .. well research is my best friend :) and your channel helps me with this sooo much, thank you!

I'd like to thank you for the info you give and the way you explain it, Danny! I have expanded my collection from 2 Phals to several, minis and regular, Oncidium type, and some very exotic ones that are definitely conversation starters. Now I think about 40% of my plant collection is orchids. I do prefer bark chips, and I have been previously using bark in my soil mixes before with a high success rate. If I find a piece that is super large I will just throw it in a different plant's pot, but generally, the bark I buy for orchids is medium to fine.

I've kept mine in coconut husks, sphagnum moss and charcoal. But of all the medium the roots love growing through are the charcoal. Even harder to remove if I have to repot.

I’m learning so much! Now I know why my cattlyas didn’t bloom when I got them from the last video - they were seedlings. But from this video I learned I lost a couple from repotting, thinking I was propagating them. Oops!

In my climate i do prefer bark. In South Africa we ont get nice fluffy sphagnum moss, we get very crumbling sphagnum moss. However most of the orchids i purchase in moss are too compact. And my personal preference is bark

Hi Danny! Thank you for all of your knowledge and instructional videos! It’s been very helpful for me on my orchid journey. I have a question about repotting cattleyas. I am seeing new roots come out of the potting media very soon after I repot. Rule of thumb says to repot when you see roots, but I just did. Is the orchid happy or does it need another repot?

Thanks Danny for yet another informative repotting video. Whats your take on longevity of moss as a medium, and will it call for more frequent repotting than if potted in charcoal or bark?

Bless you Danny. I have learned so much by watching your videos. But I have a question that I cannot find the answer to. I know that it’s a good thing to cut your flower spikes on the onset of summer so they can concentrate on root and leaf growth. This is what I did for one of my orchids however, a new flower spike has once again emerged. It’s the middle of summer. I have a new flower spike and a new leaf growing on the same orchid. What do I do now? Please help me I don’t know what to do. ❤❤❤

Hi, you can let it be it's ok, sometimes they do that depending on the environment in your home. There's always next year to see what it does, sometimes it takes a while for them to adjust to the new environment :)

Danni, a bit off topic- can I pot African violets in sphagnum moss? It is very hot and humid here. Though I keep the temp inside about 70 to 71 F the humidity is about 53-55 percent. Thanks! 😊

Don't know if you marked that phalaenopsis tag with the red line for you to know what you added the stick in. Otherwise, chunky bark can be a pain.

Questions: In nature, cattleyas don’t have to be repotted - they grow on trees (bark) - when repotting, why does all of the media has to be removed? Especially when cattleyas like to be snug in pots?
@MissOrchidGirl
@MissOrchidGirl 2 месяца назад
Hi, because the bark we use starts to rot, being that it’s not part of the tree anymore. The rotting process releases byproducts and renders the overall environment too acidic and unsuited for orchid roots :) also orchids don’t like to be snug, per say, they grow better if roots are attached to surfaces, which doesn’t really mean small pots. It’s more an issue of moisture control which can be done in any pot size if we know our materials and environment.

Don't the Phalaenopsis need air/light for the roots?
@danielschurmann7558
@danielschurmann7558 Год назад
Honestly, I didn't understand why you repotted the first Cattleya and the Phalaenopsis at all. They had plenty of room to grow more roots. The Cattleya's material didn't look very broken down and the moss of the Phalaenopsis was just fine?
@MissOrchidGirl
@MissOrchidGirl Год назад
Hi, the Cattleya potting mix is very unsuited for my climate (environment) and the phal moss was half way through its life, lower quality than mine, packed in too much and had cyano 😊 oh also I don't like transparent pots for my collection due to cyano accumulations

Thanks for repotting vid - but I am confused about your suggested medium for repotting phalanopsis orchids. In the last repotting vid I watched, (months ago) you recommended a small bark medium from rePot me (which I purchased)……… but now you are suggesting sphag moss for repotting phal orchids? I think I am missing something.

Hi Danny greetings from Florida, where it's always hot and humid lol 🥵 How can we write to you? Do you have an email address? You have inspired me to grow orchids and I started with one and now have six they are all growing new roots and it's pretty exciting I do have one cat that I purchased as a seedling it does have a few pseudo bulbs but I noticed that on the pseudo bulbs there is a sheath that does grow It starts out green and eventually turns brown am I supposed to peel that off or leave it as is I'm not sure what the purpose of that is?
