Yeah I have the same problem mate. I always use a Y steel rounded rod holders for carp fishing that I make myself. My family has been using it for a long time, even before the moved from South Africa to Australia. The rod holders have never pulled out, I have only had 1 rod got pulled in but managed to retrieve it. I have had times when big carp hook on and the rod balances on the holder like a scale or T. If I ever come down that way I will have to make you some. Those rod holders that you are showing that are quite similar to the plastic ones on boats. Which are a pain if you are trying to strike because you have to move the rod which sometimes spooks the fish. Great video mate. Tight Lines

Great stuff. I agree with the reason and it is one of the reasons I do not use them either. It is the moving the rod up and out that is a problem, too much opportunity for the fish to feel the rod and line pressure and spit. And the rod is already in the upper strike position, so you have to then drop the tip creating slack before you can strike. Good point and well broken down.

Robbie if you can weld, buy 2 bits of box tube but make sure one can slide into the other. From there you could cut a section out of the bigger tube so that the smaller tube can sit in but with a hole and bolt through both they can pivot. Make sure that there is a bit on the bigger piece that stops the smaller piece going forward and there you have it, a simple hinge that you can sort out for your metal rod holder allowing it to pivot backwards but not forwards, you then have the best of both worlds. Once you have flicked your rod back with the hinge you can try to work the rod out of the rod holder and you are not wasting those inches of slack. You would have to round off the top piece the bottom piece you would need to cut a section out of just one side which will face you so that it pivots further down giving you that stopper. Just weld your hinge system to your rod holder, or you could just clamp it to your rod holder with say a couple of hose clamps from Bunnings (they also sell hose clamps that have like a wingnut instead of needing to use a screwdriver). 1 meter of each piece of metal say as an example 1inch and ¾inch could see you through maybe 4 or 5 rod holders. It's just an idea and I hope that I'm getting my vision across ok
@robbiefishing
@robbiefishing 3 года назад
Hey Trevor, thanks for the great idea mate. I haven't used a welder since my Tech School days of the late 1980's, early 1990's. I am the worlds worst handyman. BUT... I have a friend that LOVES welding, and makes RU-vid videos on welding, some of which have over 1 million views. Maybe I can do a collaboration with him..... He can make them for me and I can use them for him. haha If you want to see his channel this is it here, he's a VERY clever man: ru-vid.com/show-UC8e7k9IGK0T9MnbyAkmQZJg

Hey Robbie, great vid! I bought a steel rod holder recently to put out little reddies for live baits while I'm casting lures around so seems like I made a good purchase! Have you had much luck using small reddies as live bait? Also - if I sent you some of the hard bodies I use in the freshwater could you do a video on where and how you would use them?
@robbiefishing
@robbiefishing 3 года назад
Hi mate, I have caught redfin on smaller redfin years ago. As for the lures, I can not make any promises mate. The only thing that I can promise is that if I get them in the mail I will open them on camera. After that they may or may not ever get used. To be honest, I would rather if you held onto them because you would be more likely to use them than I will buddy.

I use metal rod holders because I fish fo a hill so I have time to grab the rod before it goes in the water, I used sticks before but I had my Rod in it and a big catfish came along and ran which maid my rod fly up I the air and into the water. Awesome video robbie

Try circle hooks with your rod holders and set your drag to slip with proper pressure. The fish will hook itself and be hooked in the corner of the mouth most times.

Hi Robbie, Gillies bank rod holders are the best. Google em. You can lift straight up to strike and are height and angle adjustable. Only downside is the price. Caught a 70cm carp the other day and of course it was right as I was away from my rod (like 10 metres away). Didn't lose rod and got the fish.anyway I'm sounding like a salesman but really I'm just a very happy user of them 😁.

Look at the second metal rod holder and its better than the first one because you can lift it right up without going forward first. Check it out. Great Vids Robbie love them all. I like float fishing and I would like to ask you if you know where there is a Lake or slow river that I can camp right next to the water for a few days??? Thanks Robbie.
@robbiefishing
@robbiefishing 3 года назад
Thanks mate, I reckon you are right about the rod holder, that second one is definitely the better of the two for that exact reason. Without knowing what area you are heading in mate, I would probably suggest Greens Lake. It is hard to find a lake that you can camp at these days, but you can still camp at Greens Lake, which is west of Shepparton. I was over there last week. We were lure fishing for redfin and it was very slow but there was a lot of carp jumping. Perhaps a worm under a float might catch you a redfin or a carp, and as school holidays are almost over, hopefully there will be a lot less people on the water than there was when we were there. There's also public toilet facilities.

I use metal rod holders all of the time. They're a bit different to those you showed but similar idea I suppose. I've yet to miss a fish because of slack in the line from taking it out of the rod holder. Mine are from Kmart. They're just a piece of 1/4 inch galvanised rod, about 2 and a half feet long. There are two rings welded at the top of the rod at 90 degrees. The upper ring is about 4 inches in diameter with the lower ring about 6 inches lower and about 3 inches in diameter. They cost about $5 from memory. I fish in Queensland and 90% is saltwater fishing for predators like Mangrove Jack. Getting the rod out of the holder is no issue. Keep using the Forked Stick Technology of our forefathers sir! If it works then don't fix it. Ps - I also have some metal, telescopic forked sticks. They have changable heads so I can add bite alarms etcetera but I just use the forked one they came with.

I've got a stumpjumper exactly like that one in my tackle box, I haven't managed a fish on it yet but I agree about it having the perfect colours! You've definitely gotta choose the right gear to suit your style of fishing, and your reasons for not using the steel holders are definitely valid. I have a slightly different style of bait fishing to you so those particular rod holders work well for me, but when I'm in a situation where I want to strike straight out of the rod holder then I definitely prefer using forked sticks

I disagree with that advice. The amount of time it takes too pull out and up with that style of rod holder is micro seconds. Definitely not long enough to cause enough slack line to effect hook up rate unless you are moving as slow as a sloth. Look at every rod holder's in boats. If the difference was that great I think there would be something more popular on the market. The other day when your rod was pulled into the drink you laughed about it and were lucky enough to get it back but I think it would be a diffent story if it was a $400-500 set up or an old sentimental valued rod that you would lose for a slight chance of a May be having a higher hook up rate. At the end of the day tho fish to what your comfortable and confident with 🤙

Robbie one of those is an awesome fishing rod holder. You don't know how to use it properly. One yes I agree (the one with two hoops) but the other one is good for if the ground is hard and you can't plant it in the ground. You can lay it flat with a rock on it and the rod should lay on top of it. You can still lift and strike into the fish. I will make a video to show you how to use it properly.

If you want to set and forget mate, whack in a big tent peg and tie it to the butt of the rod with wire or rope. Seen a few people get their rods completely ripped out of those holders and into the drink, even though they had the drag set fine, it still peeled all the line off before they could get out of their chair. My question is how bloody massive those fish had to be to do that?
@SEEYAIAYE

Yeah nah, not even those metal holders will save you, found out the hard way they're useless on sand and wet clay. Nearly lost 2 rods in the drink. If I want to leave a rod in over night while camping, I still use them but I hammer in a giant tent peg and attach it to the butt of my rod with some fencing wire just in case a submarine of a cod smashes it during the night. Wishful thinking haha.
