Take a dip in The Bathhouse, the new terrifying game by Chilla's Art Buy MY coffee: topofthemornin... Twitter : / jacksepticeye Instagram : / jacksepticeye Edited By: / pixl_pit
Japanese trivia (and a few story explanations): 4:59 The "light saber" the monk used is called "gohei/御幣", which is a "wooden wand, decorated with two 'shide/四手' (zigzagging paper streamers) used in Shinto rituals (to bless or sanctify a person or object)". 6:23 Those wooden plaques (usually depicting the zodiac animal of the year) are called "ema/絵馬", and are used by Shinto and Buddhist worshippers to write prayers or wishes (they're purchased from shrine attendants, so they're a way to contribute to the shrine). 17:22, 22:23 Yeah, it's possible those flowers were a part of a "roadside" memorial, which marks a place "where a person died suddenly and unexpectedly". The radio (at 9:32) talked about a 29-year old woman who disappeared, so maybe it was a memorial for her (if she's now presumed dead and was last seen at the bathhouse - the newspaper at 1:11:12 seems to confirm that). 22:20 That yellow tape said "entry forbidden, please don't come in" (立入禁止,入らないでください), and was probably set by the monk. 29:11 That sign said "work-in-progress - entry forbidden" (作業中 -立入禁止), and was probably set by the protagonist (Maina) herself (after the incident in the bath). 33:33 "Yakiimo" (焼き芋) means "baked sweet potato", so Imojiro ("imo/芋" means "potato", and "jiro" is a name suffix for males) was just shouting to attract potential customers. 1:09:18 "Omikuji/御神籤" is a fortune slip, usually bought at a shrine (and chosen at random from a box). 1:13:11 "Ubume/産女" are birthing woman ghost (yōkai) in Japanese folklore, thought to appear when a woman dies just before, during, or shortly after childbirth (with the anxiety for her child preventing her spirit from passing on). It looks like the monk killed a woman because she was pregnant with his child (he even asked to keep their relationship a secret), and that's how she became an "ubume". After that, they (the landlord and the monk) tried to kill even more people (Yoko and Maina were the first two sacrifices, and Erena was gonna be the 3rd) as part of a ritual to get rid of the ghost. The grown up man you found in a pillory was possibly the monk's son (who was being whipped at the start of the game), since the monk's note at 1:14:32 said that "she had a boy - I thought I killed her before she gave birth", and that he held off on killing his son.
@@ThisIsCSDX Good question! There doesn't seem to be any specific clues toward that plot point, so I guess we can only speculate about it. Maybe Erena forgot about her as a result of PTSD, or maybe she was made to forget by supernatural means (either Maina erased her memories so she wouldn't suffer thinking about her death, or maybe that was just a consequence of the Ubume being dealt with). Two other theories I've seen (but that seem less likely) involve Maina never existing in the first place (which would imply the memory of a "fake sister" being somehow implanted in Erena's memory to make her come to the village and be the last sacrifice, but I'm not sure how that could have happened) or Maina's existence being erased when she was killed as a part of the ritual (which doesn't line up with Yoko also being killed but her grandmother - Matsuno, who was mourning her at 17:22 - still being able to remember about her).
As a Japanese myself, I never understood why people like to sleep in the MIDDDLE, hear me, MIDDLE OF THE ROOM. It's like the most insane thing you can do. I feel so UNSAFE when I don't have a wall to back me up in the dark. Nah bro. I can't fathom it.
Jokes on you, my bed is in the exact center of my room. No walls to my sides, no wall at my feet, not even a wall against my headboard. I fear not death, for it has forgotten me.
my mom is able to have power nap of 5 minutes. No alarm needed. So every time she said she go to have a nap, we know she will be back in 5 minutes sharp. Some people are wizards.
@@MelArchive-yy4uc The most impressive part there is falling asleep right away, not waking up on time. My mom is like that too. She's out as soon as she lays down.
@@NikolaStanković-p2h So is my partner.... 30 seconds from the moment he turn off the light. Even if mine is still up. The moment he says "Ok I am good for today. Good night" Bam. Asleep. It is a godlike power to me who takes two hours to fall asleep and can't nap at all.
This was my favorite. This one is more for people who understand the mythos and culture of Japan. The priest was making a specific yokai, an Ubume . The bad ending released her into the world. The good stopped the ritual, and Erena's sister protected her from returning by taking her memories, so she would not go back. The evil monk got a woman pregnant then killed her during child birth. The baby lived though it and was who was locked in the basement. The monk couldn't control the ubume. He, with the help of others in this apparent ghost village, was trying to sacrifice 3 women to control the Ubume. For someone who grew up in Japan knowing the legend of The Ubume, I am sure it is very terrifying. It is kind of like our western cultures Lady in White, or the Spanish La Llorona. A Banshee might be the same kind of feeling for you, Sean. These legends of ghostly women, in a world where woman still don't have many rights and seem to be losing rights, hits a sad note for me. These legends speak to the violation and fear that women face from the world as a whole, and often our only way to find justice is in tales of horror.
I’ve never understood why the West is so damn uppity on sexuality but at least it makes for good psychological horror. (It does mean lots of mental trauma from being both autistic and male and actually wanting company)
@@theshermantanker7043 -looks at a story which clearly plays with and emphasizes gender- "not everything is about politics." youre embarrassing yourself.
@@HadalStreetlights The story doesn't really emphasize on gender, it emphasizes on mythology, and the horror aspect of it. So honestly, you're embarrassing yourself.
When he got the potato question wrong and the guy was just like you are a disgrace to everything I cracked up! It's weird, I'm so easily scared and I've always hated horror movies and stuff, but I love watching Seán. it's like watching a horror movie with a friend and both jumping at the same time and the. laughing together 😁
I like that Chilla's Art games have interesting subplots and random funny encounters. It breaks up the continuous stream of horror and fear. It's more realistic for customer service people, in my experience.
Ugh I missed this. I am an embroidery artist and I sit here and stitch while I watch horror play throughs, nothing quite measures up to watching you play while I work! Good to see you back man!
ever had a jump scare make u stitch ur finger? lol i used to draw while watching then i got jump scared and ended up with a pen line across a nearly finished picture now I just watch
I love to do crafts while watching long horror playthroughs as well!! adds a bit of excitement while doing whatever monotonous task it is I have to do, rn I'm putting in spikes on the shoulders of my battle jacket :)
Love how each chilla's game change the type of horror they make. they made the closing shift a real fear of stalkers. and made it realistic that "oh a man cant just pop up behind you and scare you". while in this game the game literally just throws "HERE HAVE SOME JUMPSCARES! YEET YEET YEET" my heart cant take it
A more cynical person would say that closing shift was an innovative game that put effort into its scares while this game was a unclear mess of unexplained lore with a bunch of cheap jumpscares
seems they're trying out different things and not boxing themselves in! also, idk too well beyond Jack's playthroughs, are they just one person or a small team or something?
@@mimsydreams truly! I kinda agree that this one wasn't their best work, and some of the jumpscares were a bit easy to predict (wouldn't call them cheap, but that's my opinion), but I very much respect that they're trying to do different things within the horror genre! always looking forward to more chillas art
I appreciate Seans playthroughs for those of us who can't afford to play every single game we want to. It's such a nice community too and Sean always cheers everyone up
Yo! I make entertaining videos as well. I know I am not the best rn but give me an opportunity, and I won’t fail to put a smile on your face! I appreciate you thanks❣️🙏🏽

That apartment makes me feel the way that Junji Ito story about the grease made me feel, like I need a shower. Now. And I need to not stop. Ever. Luckily there's a bathhouse close by.
My same thoughts but with The Closing Shift. Snowy pretty city, a cozy and fancy looking little coffee shop and a nice little apartment. Would ADORE a game like that but without the… You know… Psychological horror part.

I think Closing Shift is such a strong one because it had a great balance of mundane life (working at a coffee shop, living a usual life of a shift worker and having a mediocre/mean coworker), comedy (the interactions with the customers were all interesting and different, some outright funny), and then the horror aspects. It didn't constantly have you in a darkly lit atmosphere like this game did and I feel like having that balance is really what made Closing Shift shine. Closing Shift's "good" ending also didn't end fully "good", same as this one, and that's something I expect of Japanese horror in general. There's not always a happy ending where everything's okay - the horrific things happen to people regardless of morals and that's truly horrifying.
@@the05thatasked52 my dad lived in the ghetto in columbus ohio. my parents had split custody and my dad and i were at my abuelo & abuelas house out of town, and when we got back to his apartment, there was a bullet hole in the door and in the opposite wall. it was almost exactly at his head level. neighbor was apparently a drug dealer and his gun went off while we were gone. if we’d been there, i wouldn’t have a dad. also it was a super ghetto old apartment building so tetanus was a real risk.
I like how there are so many implications in Chilla's games of pretty much everyone you meet being part of it. Like the priest and the landlord are totally in on it, but the appliance store lady is the one who sneaks in "looking for her earring" and presumably sabotages the electric box and steals the key, not to mention all the people who tell you you're "perfect for the ritual"
I agree that the best Chilla's Art we've seen so far was The Closing Shift; much like Fears to Fathom, I really feel a different kind of dread and scare when it's based on real life stuff, for small indie games at least.
0:50 i didnt even get a minute to watch this video and i already laughed to this "*slaps* top of the morning..."😂 Thankyou Jack, you make my days always sm better
41:10 I know literally NO ONE here would care but as someone who grew up as an autistic child playing a lot of dynasty warriors 5, this wind sound effect sounds IDENTICAL to the one used in the main menu of dynasty warriors 5 and the whole time it was playing it's all I could think about
39:35 I feel that. I have Psoriosis and it is recommended I only shower once every 3 days, and I kinda hate it but at least it took my daily pain from an 8 to like a 4
I was having this video playing in the background while I play a game since y’know ADHD and when I looked at Jack’s webcam in the corner I thought he was shirtless and that the little red logo on his shirt was a nipple lmfao
I’m glad Jack is willing to take a moment to see what life as a girl and as a woman sort of is. It really is hard and I appreciate them taking the time to see it. Thank you, Sean.
Whoa this is the first video I’ve seen after not watching you for years and Holly crap. I remember when you hit 2k subs and I can’t believe how far you’ve come. Still the same energy and everything for sure gonna start watching ur videos everyday now😂
Probably won't matter to anyone (and perhaps there's a coment somewhere below saying the exact same thing) BUT, the solo at 1:00:10 is from the song The Chase by Basixx
So here is basically the story for those who still kinda confuse : The monk at the temple is an evil guy, he want to summon the evil spirit Ubume. Its a powerful spirit born from the death of a pregnant woman. He seduce Yoko and impregnated her. He then kill her but unfortunately for him the child was born before he can kill her. He lock the child under the hatch. The ritual to fully control Ubume required the sacrifice of 2 more women, so the monk work with the bathhouse owner , through threatenen him with curse, to find 2 more women for the ritual, that would be the 2 sisters. In the bad ending, Sean failed to release the child and was capture by the monk. He then process with the ritual. However the vengeful spirit of Yoko is now way too powerful to control, she killed both the monk and the owner ( and Erena ofc ). She likely would then wreak more havoc and eventual would become a full Ubume In the better ending. The son of Yoko burn down the bathhouse, along with the monk and the owner. Erena was saved by the old lady who lost her grand daughter. Yoko still became Ubume and thats probably why Erena lost her memory, cuz that village is now under the control of Ubume
but how did yoko become ubume in the good ending if the ritual wasnt complete? (thanks for the explanation btw :) also what did the whipping?/spanking? in the beginning mean?
Personally I found this one to be the creepiest of the Chilla's Art games so far, with or without the ghost elements. I didn't think this was scary because of the ghosts, but because of the situation the main character is in. Because there's elements of nudity with no real privacy, the lack of choice, the poverty, the creepy landlord who's also your boss so he basically has complete control over you, that creepy guy who was probably a sex trafficker or something like that, the fact that everyone in town seemed to be weird, creepy, or not like you, so you had no support system... at least to a woman or someone who's got a history of sexual abuse, this game is definitely the creepiest, I think. At least with the coffee shop game, it's in a public place, it feels less like some small backwater slum where you're trapped and far from everyone, and not *everyone* feels dangerous. The stalker is creepy but it feels like there's somehow less danger of sexual assault and more of just regular assault.

Wait... this was an hour long?? I watched this for over an hour??? Damn, jacksepticeye really took an hour of my life without me knowing. 10/10, would time travel again with Sean
Dead ass. A young woman and her ghost twin sister trying to run a bathhouse in a small town sounds like an EXCELLENT premise for an anime or manga tbh. Add in some casual supernatural elements like Yokai coming in occasionally to use the bathhouse that the ghost twin works with instead of the living sister. I would ABSOLUTELY watch/read that. Someone should write that >_>
Holy shit thats a super cool idea added with that yokai one...i wanna write one but i m very poorly knowledged on yokais and stuffs...but i feel like i should give it a try
Chilla's Art never fail at making games so eerie and uncanny that literally every character is a suspect. The way the characters look and move so unnaturally makes it seem like any of them could literally kill you at any moment. I adore these games!
"I don't like the pressures of everyday living! I don't like working my job! I don't like having to earn wages! I don't like having to deal with people! I don't like having to--" Jack, that is SUCH a mood. I feel this every damn day.
"Can baking soda get rid of rust on shower heads?" Yes, Jack. Yes it can. And so can carbonated soda pop. Coca Cola can get rid of rust on damn near everything. There also happens to be a soda pop that is advertised as also being a cleaning product. I kid you not.
i’ve heard of coke being able to get rid of rust, but i’ve never actually seen a soda that was advertised as being a cleaning product 👁 what brand / drink was it exactly ?? id love to look at those ads tbh
@@jagodakit orangina has a history of strange marketing, and a few of their older commercials during their furry phase showed using it for cleaning, not sure if it was ever actually meant to be used like that though
