Most Americans hate British and Irish bands! That is why U2 and many other eighties bands from Britain and Ireland like The Boomtown Rats, Duran Duran, Spandau Ballet and Culture Club failed to make big in America!
U2 lost me when Bono was asked on 60 Minutes “Is U2 the greatest band ever?” and he answered “Is there any question?” Uh, the Beatles and Stones have guaranteed that the best U2 can do is a distant third.
U2 is only behind the Beatles as the greatest band.... They already past the Stones. The stones haven't done anything relevant since the early 90s (great band do don't get me wrong) U2 is still relevant and critically acclaimed to this day
lol...Zeppelin, The Beatles, The Rolling Stones, The Doors, Pink Floyd, The Who, Black Sabbath, Nirvana & Queens of the Stone Age, all piss on U2 from several floors above.
He's hates U2 because U2 sued SST and basically bankrupted the label because of the Negativland fiasco. Rollins never got properly paid from SST as a result. That's the reason. Bono took Henry's Dosh.
I visited Dublin years ago back in 2016, and I don't think I heard a U2 song once anywhere in the city during the week and a half I was there. Though there was a special moment when I was getting some fish and chips from the Leo Burdock's near ChristChurch and the AC/DC song "If You Want Blood (You Got It)" came on the radio as they were taking my order. And the tip jar next to the register had a sign on it that said "Fund A Hit Squad To Kill Justin Bieber."
From a musical stand-point, it's hard to digest Henry's hatred for U2 because they were the first band I discovered for myself and loved unconditionally since I was a little kid. From a grown-up stand-point, I can definitely see his point when he talks about how inflated and pretentious they are, especially that egotistical blowhard Bono. It does sort of spoil my like of some of their music especially their late 80's and all of their material moving forward, but does it make me hate Henry or U2? Fuck no! I love them both! I'd gladly play both Black Flag's Damaged and U2's War back to back in a heartbeat.
I think he just thinks U2’s music sucks. I can relate. U2, along with Sting and The Police, is some of the cheesiest cringe rock ever conceived. Whiny vocals with really cornball lyrics and the music is just annoying and repetitive with the same cheese ball effects and riffs in almost every song. You misunderstand Henry, it isn’t due to some vendetta, the music itself is just straight corny. He, like I just find it hard to believe that there are so many u2 nerds out there who are obsessed with these geeks.
U2 were totally over hyped and over rated! That is why they failed to break into the American music market! It was the same with most Irish and British bands! I think American judge bands more on their musical ability than anything else. Even mega British rock stars like Queen failed in America!
I noticed when I was in Dublin for 3 weeks that U2 were not mentioned. At all. Phil Lynott, definitely, Rory Gallagher for sure, but not U2 or Sinead either for that matter. Weird.
Found a more recent video of Rollins on Howard Stern's show and he actually commended Bono on his poverty efforts. He ragged on him a bit for other things but he wasn't nearly as bitter and envious as this recording.
"bitter and envious" I can think of no better description of this teenager in an adults body. I WANT to like Henry Rollins so badly, but then he talks like an cringe little 14 year old and i just feel bad for him again.
Bono, is annoying with his grandstanding, but so was John Lennon, with his Bed in for peace, his preaching, and his song imagine. But the beatles are still a great band and U2 are a decent band with some excellent albums.
Rollins and everyone else can say whatever they want: Joshua Tree, Achtung Baby, War and Unforgettable Fire are absolutely incredible albums. You can say that they annoy you, but you cannot argue with the music they made in their prime. It’s that simple. Whenever an artist gets big, there are always a bunch of contrarian hipsters that say they suck, no matter how good they are. They did it to Bob Dylan in the 60s. They did it to The Beatles in the 70s. They did it to Nirvana in the 2000s, and now they’re doing it to U2. Pride, Still haven’t found what I’m looking for, Sunday Bloody Sunday, Bad, One, With or without you, New Years Day ... You’re just bullshitting yourself if you say that those are not great songs. They are. Stop being so fucking cynical and actually try LISTENING to their music.
You're 3/4 correct IMO. By the time Achtung dropped, Bono had successfully fit his head up his own ass and they had crossed the line into the realm of suck.
Black Flag was the first band I openly hated as a teen. My brother took me to see my first Concert that was Rush and I got to see Metallica play when Cliff was with them and so many cool bands that just made shit bands like Black flag look stupid.
Back in the 80’s U2 and REM were the biggest bands on college radio next to the Clash.. Scan forward a couple of years later and you got the Friends episode and once again U2 was on top. But somehow, through the course of 5 albums all sounding exactly the same, you begin to realize that U2 is basically the Maroon 5 of the 80’s. And Maroon 5 sucks.
I like Rollins, he is a great musician and also a great writer/commentator, his voice is very much needed in these times. And I agree in some fronts. The thing with U2 is that they have a couple albums which are extraordinary, released back to back, and when you diss them so much you begin to sound a bit suspicious, either you are really a fan of them, or you are an old grumpy envious b****, no kidding man
A lot of repressed deception about love and vulnerability... Nothing else, it takes a life time to admit you didn't know shit when you're young. This only adds to confusion. If it resonates at least in few soul, and I think it will then it's all good. I love agressivness myself. Hardcore days were very good strategy to stay alive in this damaged world though.
@@TheStorehouseOfMemories Rollins is an angry hack that just yells at people of all sorts. He desperately wants attention and wines incessantly about problems and does NOTHING to fix them. Bono saved Africa from Aids ! He put his power to use and didn't just wine like a privileged baby who was so depressed , he tried to kill himself. Anyone with an ounce of musical talent and reviewers put U2 up with the likes of the Stones, Who etc . Number one albums in 4 straight decades 20 plus Grammy's, yea they must suck. Dude You are blinder than Helen Keller
@syn_gypsy thats fine if you don't like him, but to say he is a crappy human. is dumb. the work he did eradicating aids from Africa is worthy of the nobel peace prize.!!!
Hope Lieb you don't like them anymore just because Henry Rollins hates them? What a tool! Btw I never liked U2 but if youre that weak minded to change your mind over a rant shows youve consumed too much fluoride.
I love you hank. It’s funny that you think your opinion actually matters. I think you would agree with the old saying, “opinions are like assholes, everyone’s got one.” I think I’ll listen to this one of your awesome albums now. Oh wait, you don’t have one.
Grand scheme, wider screen, macro level, Bono's done more on the behalf of others than ol'Hank. He's so cool bein' so angry. So easy to just shit on the efforts of others because he's bitter or jealous. He'd sell out even more than he has, but not enough are willin' to buy in, or want what he's got for sale. Maybe he needs more solitary refinement in his solitary confinement. "On My Way to the Cage" sounds like parody. And it did make laugh.
I'm absolutely convinced Henry is a closet U2 fan but is too embarrassed to admit it, so he uses them for comedic fodder. The amount of time he spends giving them energy is astonishing.
Those who have been diagnosed with Asperger's are known for their restricted and repetitive patterns of behavior and interests and are known to engage in one-sided conversations about their favorite interests. That explains quite a lot when you listen to any of his spoken word or his long-winded answers in interviews when it comes to things he despises - and things he likes, actually. U2 are his contemporaries. Nobody in rock or punk or journalism outside of those who have worked closely with the band has spent more time discussing U2's career than Henry has.
Hanry had a tough life, mostly by choice i would say. Hes as real as it gets. Hes critical of them for good reasons. There are legions of people ready to kiss their ass so dont worry, they will be fine.
@@pete6891 U2 are one of the most highly regarded bands in the history of rock music, critically and commercially. They don't care one bit what a punk rock washout thinks of them. Henry made a career out of being a troll well before there was even a term for it. And people actually paid to hear him speak which is baffling but oh well.
Name a Rollins song. Let alone a couple of albums. If the abuse was coming rom somebody that had actually done anything significant, you could take it more seriously lol!!
More like he's criticizing Bono, but he's just Bono-lite Made their money in the same circles, even partnering w/ some of the same corporations Just that milking old Black Flag stories is not as profitable as milking the same bass line in an ongoing music career
If Henry Rollins wants to here some really bad bands then he should listen to some early UK punk bands! The Clash for example were the most over rated and terrible British band ever! I think British punk bands only got good in the 1980s after becoming influenced by American punk bands!
Hey it’s west to hate, andt hard to do what u2 did. Like it or not it’s really hard to say something positive and get people to like you. Easy to tear it down then to build something up. Hate to say it, he sounds like Donald trump jr just saying. Donald trump jr whines about everyone. Hey, if you don’t like them don’t listen. He would probably say the same thing to people that don’t like his music.
… and I like Henry Rollins. But he sitting like a jealous guy. Too bad. Funny thing is, I’d bet that u2 feel the same way about Phil Lynott that he does. Hey it’s ok for him to have an opinion but for such a normally articulate guy he’s pretty childish in how he expresses himself here. He’s probably grown up a bit since this video.
Incorrect. Boy, War, October. Those albums were decent. Steve Lillywhite at least got some raw energy out of them. Everything they’ve released in the past 30+ years is hot trash. Everything sounds the same and it’s so fucking bland.
I just liked your comment and then read "millennials are not welcome to comment"- WHAT? I'm as much of a U2 fan as you are and born in 2003, YES, TEENAGED U2-FANS EXIST! We're somewhere in there, if you look closely at the masses of r&b, rap and pop kiddos... I like rock in general but will always love U2 with all my heart and soul
Musical taste is not something I go to Henry Rollins for. U2 made brilliant timeless classic albums. Then they lost their mojo. Joshua Tree is an all time classic masterpiece.
Easy for Henry Rollins, in the comfort of America, to talk shit about a man who grew up in a country marred by civil unrest for decades. Bono has done more to help so many across the globe. All Henry Rollins can do is say "I'm punk rock and grew up with privilege in America and just like to whine about stuff in my music." Sounds like envy to me. It's okay to say you don't like their music. Just don't be a douche and try to fight the wrong battles.
@@allhandsondik7803 nice name, you juvenile. I probably have forgotten more about U2 and Henry Rollins than you've even know. Rollins is a pretentious prick that is so full of himself that he cannot fathom anything outside of his tiny, closed minded brain.
@AllHandsOnDik @Pat Minturn Rollins sucks, U2 sucks, Pat Mintum sucks, and AllHandsOnDik sucks. How about that? As a matter of fact, I suck too, because leaving pointless comments on stupid RU-vid videos is the damn definition of pretentious. You calling someone else pretentious in a RU-vid comment is pretentious. We should all shut the f**k up and make damn certain our side of the street is spotless before pointing out other people's s**t. Pretentious fools.
U2 have always been the best Rock band ever. Everyone who says U2s songs sound the same really haven't listened to more than 3 songs of U2, they really don't sound the same. They're a great band and always will be. People tend to hate them because of their fame, just says a lot, They dont make 14 albums, sell 170 million records, and have the most grammy awards (22) than any other band for no reason. Hate them all you want but no matter what you say, they will always be the best rock band on the planet.
Not a u2 fan myself but henry rollins is as egotistical as bono, and as for musical talent, black flag had barely 3 chords in all their stuff, and rollins loves milking his i had a bad childhood and am angry schtick all his life. And anybody who says yes to films like wrong turn 2 has lost all artistic credibility in one paycheck.
