It was really poor set-up. There had been talk of her earlier activism that was arguably feminist. But I was trying to bring up her status, why her being seen as a female icon (becoming successful through art despite hardships), being beloved for that art, and her wealth, being why her TERF rhetoric has such far reach and that it undercuts her now being a feminist (if people still perceive her as such and even if she still fights for prochoice or other feminist issues). I whiffed it with the messy explanation.
Leon here - I'm genuinely frustrated with myself in the JK clip. She has done actual activism prior to her descent into TERF-ry, which she could arguably have been called a feminist. But in my argument as for why she no longer can be seen as a feminist, I sloppily brought up her being a millionaire & a female icon to part of why she's able to cause so much harm now. It was a really poor set-up to getting to the crux of my point. Her harming a marginalized group means she can't be recognized as a feminist. And she's able to cause to do so much harm because she is a female icon (by way of artistic success despite hardships) thus seen as worthy of support and admiration. And because she's so wealthy now people see her a someone worth listening to. (Which is a bias that comes out of a capitalist society - ie "rich people are inherently smarter"). i went to a catholic girls school, and period poverty was a massive issue. so many girls in my school had this problem that my school started giving out pads and tampons for free. when we went into the first lockdown, our school offered us care packages which had like 30 pads in them for free. every teacher in every classroom had boxes to give out if you asked, so you could pick a teacher that you were comfortable speaking to. and we had them in all of the bathrooms and at the office too. aside from some awful people taking them and shoving them down toilets and stuff, it was a massively beneficial scheme that helped so many women. here in scotland, we are the first country to make access to period products a legal right. and im really proud of that. :-) we have them available in spaces such as community centres, pharmacies, and youth clubs.

Especially since what's commonly learned in high school is a dumbed down inaccurate version of what biological sex actually is. Different cells can be xx and xy and you can have a mix within your body and never know. Plus hormonal status is a major factor and changes throughout the lifespan. It's complex and the focus on chromosomes as a monolith just provides a false sense of certainty for no reason.
I too have worked with women experiencing poverty, and yes they do bleed through their clothes. Many even have shelter and food, but sanitary pads/tampons are a ‘luxury’ to them. Food/electricity/medicine is more important for survival. Anyone who has worked with the impoverished and claims this isn’t an issue is lying.

“Trans women aren’t women because they haven’t had a period” is like saying “that couple isn’t actually parents because they adopted and never actually went through the birthing process”…that argument immediately falls apart!
@@Baker19911 a lot of cis women have xy chromosomes and vice versa. (see Sywer syndrome) There's no workable scientific definition of "woman" that you could come up with that would include all cis women and exclude all trans women.
@@common_undead there’s always going to be abnormalities in science. For example 5% of humans are born with more then 10 fingers but we still call them human. Just cause someone has a defect doesn’t change the standard. Intersex is intersex. A women is still a adult female. (Just my opinon) I still believe every one deserves rights to live a happy life and it shouldn’t matter tho.
@@Baker19911 "abnormalities" carry a very different meaning in science vs general society. In science, abnormalities simply refer to a statistically significant deviation from the mean. In general society, "abnormal" carries with it the connotation of "bad" or to quote you "defected". That is the problem. Defected by who's standard? Science clearly doesn't have one; it doesn't determine whether somebody is "defected". On that note, in science, having deviations from a mean is recognised. It would be an incorrect statement to say that "humans have 10 fingers", since its not a hard and fast rule. Similarly, it would be incorrect to say your x and y chromosomes determine whether you're a man or woman, because they evidently don't.

The girl legit said argued that because trans women can’t have a period they don’t know what it’s like to be women, and so she doesn’t consider them a woman. Obviously no one makes the latter argument, and that was point! They are both equally as crazy when you break the root of the argument down.
The Eric Andre bit about Thatcher is honestly my favourite bit of television ever. As someone who is from a severely divided and marginalized community that was stripped of dignity and industry thanks to Thatcher, it just was so funny basically highlighting the public ignorance of the general English mindset.
At first I found scarf boy embarrassing, but then you see he's one of the better ones. And that seething contempt look he was giving the TERFs was the only thing that got me through it.
i want to give that guy a hug so bad. the fucking exhaustion of having to justify your own existence to a group of people who are determined to devalue you is so apparent on his face and it's heartbreaking. the fact that people are willing to do that to another human being just so they can be loudly wrong is abhorrent.
this video genuinely makes me so sad. despite labeling themselves as feminists, these women are absolutely not. intersectionality is vital to the women’s rights movement. You cannot call yourself a feminist unless you support trans women. it’s as simple as that. and the fact that they think ACB is the peak of feminism is absolutely ridiculous after everything she’s done. just because a woman is successful in a male dominated field does not make her a feminist.
We support trans women and then a newly trans woman goes to a swimming competition and wins 1st place...months before that said trans woman was swimming against men and didn't come close to 1st. Do you not see whats happening?
could it be counted as dogwistling when Rhonda described J.K. Rowlings transphobic believes as "opinions"? I mean just a phew years ago (and even now), that was used as the go-to defence when someone said something bigoted and got backlash for it.
They chose liberal men and conservative women :( if I (a woman) was on this show I would hold all the opposite opinions that the women held, and explain the cliff notes version of the science and biology behind being trans.
I will never understand the talking point of "if i want to SERVE my husband it does not mean i'm not a feminist". People like that always frame their sense of self in terms of their husbands, which to me seems oxymoronic.
