That’s weird…. Are you sure? Because Mexicans, at least in Mexico will pronounce a name however the hell they want, and the more you ask them to say it right the more they say it wrong. Good luck if you have a name that sounds remotely like something else, or is the ending or beginning of any other word, because that’s exactly what your nickname will be for the entirety of your life! Your name is Mila? Milanesa it is!! However here in the US absolutely most people will at least try to pronounce your name correctly!

@@Noname99903 Uhh did you watch the video? Where do you think many of those expats are from? Americans might try but they punish you for it. It happens a lot in the US and I've seen personally college advisors telling a lot of Asian students to get an English name to be appealing to recruiters. This, of course, only applies to those asking in good faith, which it seems like he was. I know it's not fair for you to carry the emotional burden of intergenerational trauma and also have to be welcoming to normie questions, but society as a whole has to progress, not just an elite few in their ivory towers. I've been on the other side having received an acerbic reply by a trans person, and I had to remind myself of the harshness of their ’lived experience’ to avoid using a similar tone. I always feel ashamed when i hear stories of kids having to change their name for educators. I'm a nursery teacher and i always try my best to learn the correct pronunciation and spelling of every kids name. I think that names have such a deep and personal meaning, and having to change them for someone else would make me feel like loosing a part of myself. It's sad to see educators not acknowledging this. However, it seems that you are pretty happy with your names, and that's wonderful 💕

English speakers or generally foreigners cannot pronounce East Asian names, and vice versa. A foreigner has to get a localized name in Asia or pronounce their name with the phonology of that local language. My name is Adrian but in Asia nobody can pronounce this name. We humans tend to go for the path of least resistance, so in Korea I use 재호 Jaeho not 아드리안; in Japan, I use 毅 Takeshi not エイドリアン; in China, I use 詩翊 Shiyi/ Siyik not 阿德里安; in Kazakhstan, I use Әділет Adilet; in Quebec, I go by Adrian (pronounced /adʁiẽ/). I tried to use Adrian here in Kazakhstan, and everyone messes it up. I become Andrei or Andrew or Andran 😂😂😂 We like to fit in, not stand out. Calm down, it's actually the opposite. When I lived in SK, all my friends who were English teachers told me about how strange they thought it was that all the kids, even the kindergarten ones, had English names. They were all told (by Koreans) that it was normal to have both a Korean name and an English name. My friends were never even told the Korean names. And I'm here now, literally 10 years later, watching this video and realizing it's not a normal thing that everyone just does, but something that is done purposely for the teachers

Yea but you normally still kinda adopt a different pronunciation to you name depending on country. Because for me I rather they call me a similar sounding way, that fits the language flow. Then try and most of time butcher the actual nativ pronunciation. Because they will. There is a reason people have accents when learning foreign languages. Because to hear the subtle differences is really hard. So making it easier to pronounce and fit the language flow better is absolutely okay for me. But changing it to something completely different... if you like then why not, but not because others say so. Oh and we will say, that your pronunciation is correct, after you try for 5-10 times, regardless of if it's correct or not XD

The whole "we can't pronounce your name so you have to change it" has always been weird to me as a Native English speaker. Maybe it's because I speak a second language, but pronunciations aren't typically difficult if you practice enough (of course it depends on the language but for me in general). Plus, my name has my misspelled or mispronounced in so many ways to the point where sometimes I can't even recognize what the person wrote or said. And my name is of French origin. Yet I've never been told to change my name or been told to go by a nickname.

I'm from a hispanic country, my niece studied with a chinese kid, last name Yun, who got his first name changed to Angel (in spanish is kinda pronounced like An-hel, our g sound is like the h sound in "hello", the a sound is like the a in "caught"). And there was a japanese guy at my university who moved here when he was 9, his name was Toshiro, we all called him Hiro but his spanish name was José lol. So yeah, they choose generic names here too. I've noticed that east asian immigrants care about assimilation and trying to fit in their new home so their kids aren't bullied or mocked, maybe that's why they choose common names in that country. I still agree with you and believe it's a shame they have to give up their name, which is part of their culture and a mark from the place they came from, for such regular names. I was in shock when I heard a teacher calling Hiro by "José", I thought how awful it had to felt to change your beautiful ethnic name to fit another's country's standards. That belief of "they came here so they have to get used to our rules not us to theirs" is selfish, we all could use a little of companionship and collectivism and try to learn how to properly pronounce another person's name.

I didn’t have a problem at all with people who mispronounce my name, in fact it is normal as I have a foreigner name, but at least don’t ask me to change it completely, try to understand that we had to learn how to pronounce your foreigner names and we didn’t complain, do the same cz you’re not the only people living in this world, and of course.. not the center of it too.

Yeah, as an American, Americans are terribly self centered and self important, and I think a lot of it has to do with how a lot of kids were raised here. Also people in America really tend to dehumanize those who are different than they are. Looking throughout history, times where people were FORCED to conform in spite of their culture, it doesn't really end in a nice way ever. I wish people would be more understanding of others culture but unfortunately I think fear controls a lot of their thinking too

As a korean, i used to be very self conscious whenever it was beginning of a new semester and classmates started to judge my name just because it was diff from theirs and teachers always pronounced it wrong. So i started using english name and that way I felt more socially inclusive among the pairs. This period was when I was a middle school kiddo and was very sensitive about what others were thinking about me, that oneday as I was casually replying with my nickname i went by at that school someone just kept asking for my actual name and I was very offended by it. She did say at the end she would prefer to call by my original name cuz that’s how it should’ve been called. I ended up insisting her to call by my english name and never spoke to her again lmfao. Now I actually don’t care whichever name people would call me by, but if the same situation happened I would still get offended as the preferring and decision of what people should call me by is totally on me and not the person calling. Whether it was a “good intention” or not. Just sharing a lil story of me so people who’s saying “oh I don’t get it” can actually recollect their brain that’s been buried for their lifetime and do what’s called thinking.

It's not just for the teachers - I was a teacher in china for a year and a bit. It's also because a lot of the phonetics are different - the kids we're teaching are a lot less likely to switch to primary language when they're using names for each other that use the phonetics of the language they're learning. A lot of our students chose their own name too if they were old enough - for example, I had students named Elsa and Anna after the characters from Frozen. The school had a giant book of names and often if they didn't know what they wanted, the kids would sit with the parents and choose or the parents would choose based on their personality. Honestly in the classes with kids that hadn't chosen yet, it used to be so difficult because as soon as you say a Chinese sounding thing, the kids' brains just click back into Chinese and you spend five to ten minutes getting them back into it

A person's name is a massive part of their identity, and changing it, or being forced to change it, or not being allowed to use your birth or cultural name for various reasons, has been and still is used as an oppressive, othering and negation tactic across the world, but especially in the Global South, perpetrated by europeans and westerners onto BIPOC. I dont think non black or non brown people would understand the depth and severity of this, or maybe they can, but choose not to. Personally I'd be very ashamed to have a child call itself some random name, just for my (adult) palette's ease, while I'm a guest in their country. By the same token all visitors or guests should cha ge their name for, for example, Korean people's ease and palette, but somehow when it's that way around, it's unacceptable.

@@ts4686 I can understand your point of view, however I was asked to pick a Chinese name when I went there for paperwork and the like because my name doesn't fit on their forms. It's seen the same as a nickname - most people have a lot of things they're called by and having a nickname for a specific purpose is common in western countries too. The only difference is its in a different language. For example, a lot of people have an online or gaming nickname (I go by Kitty), a name they use for business or serious things (for me: Jack), names their friends call them, their legal name, etc. Yeah for some people these are all the same name, but for a lot of people they aren't. I agree forcing people to change their names is problematic, but the children get to choose their name usually and it's not a replacement for their name. Some choose to use it when they're older, others don't, and that's completely okay. We didn't ask our students to change their names for teachers' comfort, we asked them to pick a nickname so that we could all continue to use only English in an English classroom which is extremely important when you're teaching toddlers.

Oh stop. If I knew I could get a better education for my kid and knew koreans wouldn't be able to pronounce traditional english names that kid would be getting a Korean name asap. It's called being a smart parent.

@@ts4686 I definitely see where you're coming from, but I don't think that's the case in first world country schools. I live in an English speaking country, and every foreign language class I've ever taken has had the students choose a name or a version of their name that flows more easily in the language they're learning. It's partly not to disrupt the flow of the new language, and partly so that when you do one day interact with native speakers you have a name that is easy for them to pronounce and use.

If you're named after Tina Turner, you might want to know why she's a legend in the game. It's way more than the 80s.

Yeah definitely a legend from the 60s right through to 00's. Even more so after all the shit Ike put her through, she's certainly one strong woman and now 8yrs old!

I have almost 4 names! I have a history of being adopted, put up because of bad homes then readopted. I go by Olivia, Christinna, Rōzu and one name, the reason why I say almost because it never became official, was surprisingly Synthia! It's cool!
