I agree with everything he said EXCEPT the idea that you should use a pencil, pencils fade too quickly and pens last longer overtime, plus when you use a pen you eventually make LESS mistakes because you learn to plan things out more
I once did a year long mission trip and kept a journal writing in both pen and pencil. At some point the journal got wet and all of the writing in ink was washed away or heavily distorted but the writing in pencil was unaffected. Now, I only use pencil.
This is the only way I can read the Bible now. I've always been a bad reader and for an extremely long time I didn't read the Bible regularly and the odd occasion I did read it was a one year bible and I didn't remember anything. Journalling has made the Bible so much more interesting to read. I'm asking questions that I'd never contemplated. I'm not on a one year plan now. I'm just starting from Genesis and reading verse by verse. If I want to say something about a verse, I'll write it in a notebook. If I don't have anything to say about a verse, that's fine. Sometimes I find myself in a stream of consciousness writing at least a page about one verse. Another thing I've found myself doing is seeing foreshadowing and symbolism of Jesus in the Old Testament. What used to be plain and simple stories are now rich treasures to be analysed.
I just started looking into this, and marking and highlighting your Bible (although I´ve been taking notes on a notebook for some time) and got a bunch o videos where they were talking a lot but not saying anything. But pastor John doesn't disappoint, thank you so much.
I started my bible learning with Genesis, but realized by Deuteronomy that I needed a different approach. So I took some of the most important components of the gospel (the meat) - like salvation, faith, sin, the divinity of Christ, etc (that are critical to being born again Christian) - and thoroughly study and document on each topic. It has been very useful for developing my own reference notebook for my spiritual journey. Of course, I will revisit and add to each section as I go along, even as I move on to different topics.
What a remarkable justification for ‘Look at the Book’. I value the variety of content that Desiring God provides through Ask Pastor John, Look at the Book, sermonettes, etc....
One trick I use is to make little magic marker nicks in the binding for each Old Testament Chapter. The marks differentiate the Historical Sections, wisdom books, Prophets etc. and there is also a system to show chronology so that when I look at the binding I can see which books were written first. I read the Bible online or with apps but there’s nothing like my own Bible with my own notes. I write in my Bible so much (pen!) that I don’t know how people function without journaling Bibles! No...no....and no.... Scribbling in this guys coloring book will not reveal the secrets of eternal life. However, It will provide lots of opinions and quotable quotes for you. All worthless...but they seem like the right thing to do.
@@mr.c2485 No one is trying to find the secrets of eternal life by journaling. Where did you even get that? The Gospel is pretty clear on how to get eternal life. People journal for a multitude of reasons, but they aren't trying to find some hidden conspiracy. It's just a method of meditating on scripture and trying to get closer to the author. What opinions are you even talking about? Your own? What's wrong with writing down your own opinions in your Bible? In fact, that's the best place for them. When I really establish my opinion within the only opinion that matters (God's) then it gives him room to really convict me of it. An example of this, Early on I wrote once how much I disliked the Israelites and how frustrated I was of their constant forgetfulness. When I got to Hosea I realized just how like the Israelites we still are today. Without making the statement first that I disliked the people, I wouldn't have been so convicted by the mirror I saw.
I would love to see John do a "Look at the book" type video detailing what is in this video. I heard him talking about how to make notes but I got a little confused along the way. That would be wonderful.
Bible journal soo good, I never read the bible till I starteded journaling. After reading passage, ask god what he's saying before turning to commentaries!
I disagree about the pencil. All you need is some white out tape. I say this because using colored pens is so nice because you can color code and notes show up vibrantly vs. a dull pencil.

At 10:47 Piper brings up the issue of ambiguity. I hate ambiguity. When I hear the topic addressed I try and store the discussion away in mind. I know John Piper very much appreciates J.I. Packer. Regarding Kathleen's comment, I don't know how you reached your conclusion that somehow by journaling you are compromising your faith and following men instead of God. The Bible itself teaches us to meditate on it. Everyone is created with a distinct and unique mind, and so some people meditate on the Word by writing their thoughts down. The act nails down our busy, noisy thoughts. It's not really about focusing on the past or trying to build a collection of notes (although it can be very eye-opening to read some notes from years prior). It's just a way to clear the jungle of your mind and actually meditate. Mr. C, I get your position. But I offer this idea; our lives are spent in a war. There are times when we will be persecuted, mocked, and ridiculed. There are times when God places someone right in front of us to share with. The Holy Spirit will aid you in that situation (assuming you at least put in the effort to read and consider the Holy Word. I've met people who think they can be lazy and do nothing and God will still honor their work as though they were theologians). But is that really all the Good Book is used for to you? In my understanding, Journaling is not primarily used to prepare our minds for spiritual war (though it can play a big role in that). Journaling is how I delight in God. It's my alone time with him, like prayer. It reminds me that I'm not just reading the Bible, I'm reading the Bible with the author standing right next to me. You don't have to journal. It just doesn't connect with everyone. But goodness be careful you don't fall prey to self-righteousness and believe that the act is useless or worthless just because it doesn't do much for you.

I've been Bible journaling for 3 and a half months now and had just come across this podcast. Apparently, we should use pencils but I've been using a 0.5 ballpen, is that okay? Or have I sinned too?

Is this episode of APJ intended to be humorous? Trying to figure this out. Or maybe it's a subtle way to demonstrate to believers the infantilized state of current evangelicalism? @@kathleenwharton2139 well of course I agree with the cited scripture but I would be a bit more cautious before making an accusation about something like that with our brother in Christ. It has been a while since I have heard it but I'm quite sure Pastor Piper talked about Pastors and how much they should and shouldn't make and it seemed to boil down to covering needs (he didn't give specific number values because some needs may vary depending on individuals). If my memory is correct he used himself as the example and talked about how he made sure to put a cap on his income to cover the stuff he needs and to have some saved for emergencies (like possible hospital stuff). So just from that I think you may have been ill informed about Piper's financial status but I do agree that people abuse the Gospel for their own financial gain and that is absolutely awful!
