Local news operations are disappearing from the landscape leaving many Americans without a place to turn for coverage of their region. It is a trend that is becoming more frequent from coast to coast. In his latest feature Greg McQuade shows us how a new approach is filling the void in Fredericksburg, Virginia. The Fredericksburg Free Press went on line in February of 2024. The digital daily employees three full-time reporters dedicated to covering issues and events that affect people living in the city and Spotyslvania and Stafford Counties. The non-profit Free Press doesn’t accept advertising and is free of opinion. The independent Free Press is supported by readers and corporate sponsors. According to a recent study by Northwestern University one third of newspapers in the U.S. have closed since 2005 creating so called news deserts for millions of Americans. The grassroots Fredericksburg Free Press is helping to buck the trend and putting local back into local news.
