"You basically just have to make a dozen crappy games before you can make something good". I couldn't agree more! I started off in 2022 following an 8 hour long 2D dungeon crawler game tutorial which taught me sooo much about unity since it was my first time making a game. Then, I tried to use those 2D elements to make my own 2D tower defense-like game. I only made two different levels but I learned a lot from that. Then, I followed a couple 3D game tutorials and decided I was ready to take on Unity 3D. I started working on my own unique 3D minigame and there were so many ups and downs but I got so much experience from it. Then I got burnt out and stopped working on it for a while, a couple months later I got motivated to get it finished and after I did I put it on steam in February of 2023 (and I've sold 25 copies to date)! That game is definitely not made in the most optimized way, but I've learned from it and I know what not to do in my future games. Now I'm working on a realistic multiplayer simulator game in Unity 3D and I continue to learn so much. I also continuously go back to that 3D minigame I released on Steam and update it with new features that I learn from working on my other games. The learning never stops and the more games you make, the better you get!

"Make lots of simple games" I'll add to that quote: "and FINISH EACH ONE OF THEM". That's the hardest part of doing a game And when I say "finish" I don't mean complete the game with super graphics, multiplayer support and console ready. I mean complete it to a level of being playable outside the game engine, export to a free platform like itch, and let other people and friend play them. Also if possible, watch them play your games. There's an incredible amount of feedback just watching someone play your game.
@CodeMonkeyUnity
@CodeMonkeyUnity 5 месяцев назад
Oh yup I should have emphasized that point. In my mind "make games" == "complete games" but I know some people start tons of games but never finish them. Getting a game to the finish line is indeed extremely important!
@lorddiego
@lorddiego 5 месяцев назад
@@CodeMonkeyUnityAbsolutely! And also, IMHO, one of the hardest things to achieve when you're a beginner. It's completely out of scope the idea of "finish" a game. Most of us just focus on doing stuff, adding mechanics, writing code, graphics, sfx, music, UI, but almost never think of "...and now, the ending". Probably due to scope creep, which you mentioned several times in your past videos.

Good stuff! I agree, the best feeling as a game dev is starting to feel like you can create the games that you were playing as a kid, that's probably one of the biggest motivators out there. Also, you can technically argue that games like Dwarf Fortress, Kenshi, Project Zomboid are more complex than Sims 4 while being made primarily by a single person (but those guys are absolutely mental 😆)

I think I'm getting better thanks to your course. I'm still getting stuck with the execution, however. For example, I wanted to instantiate an array of clouds to spawn at random intervals and pick a cloud at random. When I tried to do that using a flappy bird tutorial, I got an error saying "GameObject[] doesn't have a transform". So I had to do it using one cloud at a time instead of an array. My workaround isn't terrible but it's not what I wanted if I was able to use an array. EDIT: I got it to work! :) GameObject newCloud = Instantiate(cloudsPrefab[Random.Range(0, cloudsPrefab.Length)], new Vector2(cloudsPrefab[Random.Range(0, cloudsPrefab.Length)].transform.position.x, cloudsPrefab[Random.Range(0, cloudsPrefab.Length)].transform.position.y + Random.Range(cloudMinRange, cloudMaxRange)), cloudsPrefab[Random.Range(0, cloudsPrefab.Length)].transform.rotation);

I've always wanted to start coding, my ability is pretty good and bad at the same time. For me, it takes a lot of *** time to learn something, either programming, learning to ride a bike/car or doing something, it takes a lot of practice, but once I get the hank of it I essentially become a killer at that respective thing. I was curious about your course, but almost $300 it's too much, that is almost a full Romanian monthly salary, and if I put $120 more I could get my driver license. I'm sad that you don't have something cheaper, I know that $300 is worth it, but for me it will take more than a year to save up enough money. It's always great to see ur tutorials. It feels simple however it's content is a must / essential in any game. I have been trying to make a health, reload, and inventory system similar to escape from tarkov or arena breakout. But I have faced a lot of issues in avatar mask especially when climbing and moving, it's not only about decreasing speed, it's about disabling the functionality of the blacked mask and syncing the animation with it, also bleeding limbs and detection of bullet collision. Each part of the body has its own health. Then the reloading system is completely different than any other game, it's not just counting bullets in your buckets. And finally the inventory system. If you can make a tutorials on the above features, then you've made the core features of a multi million game. So can you make the above features or it's complex even for codemonkey?

i can't fully agree with that. sure, it's important to gain experience by solving as many small problems as possible, but you don't have to develop tons of games to gain that experience. i've had a game idea for years and i'm always trying to come up with new ideas, improve things, or learn new things for this game, to make it even better. as long as you don't try to make a mega hit right away to make a lot of money and only do it as a hobby. you can also gain a lot of experience if you have a dream game and just try to bring it to life somehow. that works just as well. :)
@CodeMonkeyUnity
@CodeMonkeyUnity 5 месяцев назад
Sure, as long as you're making things you're going to learn, even if it's all things on the same project. However there are some challenges that only show up at the end of a project (saving, main menu, loading, creating a complete experience) and if you do not complete multiple games then you only gain experience on those very important areas just once.
@gabrielwhite9881
@gabrielwhite9881 5 месяцев назад
@@CodeMonkeyUnity yes, but still, experience grows over time, depending on the problems you're trying to solve, and not everyone is a fan of the idea of making hundreds of games. but you can still be experienced in that one genre, if that's your way of being a developer. :) and i think that's also ok to be a pro in one topic of 100% instead of an experienced one in 10 topics. because you might never need most of that experience if you only work on one genre. :)

I ended up just being a regular C# dev for the last 15 years. I have made clones of some basic games using unity and it seems so much more easy and accessible than ever before (having tried 3ds max and flash a long time ago), but now I've realised my imagination is terrible. I can't come up with any concept that i think people would actually pay for, so I just can't take the leap to commiting to a project.
@CodeMonkeyUnity

Imagination/Creativity is definitely a tricky thing to teach, for that my advice is play lots of games and find out what you enjoy playing. Then take some elements from several games you like playing and try putting them together in an interesting way! It's also something you gain with experience, game design is indeed an entire discipline that some people spend their entire lives learning.

Or just start working on the dream game and slice them into pieces small enough for you to finish then start learning from there. I wasted so much time in tutorials hell just to delay the time I could spend working on my dream games. There is no stupid ladder, only your skills.

Yeah I'm currently doing your visual scripting course online, But ima a little slow at it all since i have owned your course for over a year now and only really just started. I don't know how many visual scripting courses you have but i would like to do one strictly on a Command and conquer Generals style game and included with how exactly to make the assets as well as the visual scripting as long as i don't have to buy some expensive software to do so. I currently am also learning blender to make in game assets, so if you could point me to the right course or if you have one already Please let me know.
@CodeMonkeyUnity

That visual scripting course involves the making of 3 separate games, so if you manage to fully understand everything there you should then be able to make your own RTS. As for Blender, I'm not a 3D modeller so I'm really not the best person to teach that, there's a ton of awesome channels on RU-vid like Imphenzia and Grant Abbit

@@CodeMonkeyUnity Thanks for the replies. Yes i am still yet to complete the course, cause I've done the first part 3 time to fully understand and want to be able to do the same without the video is my goal and i have only just started the 2nd part (top down). I do hope to one day build my own rts game for fun.

Why not trying to create an open source game to try having more people from assets maker to sound designer or things like this ? Personnaly i'm wishing to create a StoneHearth like of game as open source to insure that people can fork the project and still maintaining it if i'm not working on it anymore (not like what Radian became)

Nope I've always been a solo indie dev. When I started there was no such thing as a "game dev industry" here in Portugal. Nowadays I'm doing quite well on my own so don't really feel the need to work for a normal company, although I'd love to work on a larger game with a team some day.

How to make mechanics like "woodturning" mobile game, "tangle master" mobile game, "Ice cream ASMR" mobile game, fruit peel game mechanics, cutting soft jelly mechanics, snow mechanics, water mechanics, mesh deformation, etc etc I find it very hard to build these kind of mechanics for mobile games.

Are you considering a new course for Visual Scripting a 3rd Person Shooter? I have followed your Udemy Visual scripting courses which were great, but I am struggling to find any resources for TPS that use visual scripts. Converting C# is a huge pain and I get too lost trying to follow C#.
@CodeMonkeyUnity
@CodeMonkeyUnity 5 месяцев назад
I've got tons of stuff on my to-do list that I probably won't revisit visual scripting any time soon. If you can understand Visual Scripting then you can learn C#, so I would encourage you to give that a try, like in my Beginner course ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-pReR6Z9rK-o.html I'm guessing you tried it in the past and found it frustrating, but now that you've gone through that entire Visual Scripting course you have a lot more knowledge on just logic in general which will help you learn programming-. Best of luck!

Although this is obviously true it is a bit abstract. Would be much more useful if you made some videos with high level design (software design, not game design) on how to create a complete game. That is where, at least I am, struggling.
@CodeMonkeyUnity
@CodeMonkeyUnity 5 месяцев назад
It's very hard to make videos on that topic because every single game is unique. There's a million ways to do pre-production, some people like tons of detail, others (like me) prefer a very rough overview and get started making a prototype right away, both options are valid. It sounds like you're getting stuck in analysis paralysis. My advice is exactly what I said in the video, start by remaking simple games and slowly increase the complexity.
@Shakor77
@Shakor77 5 месяцев назад
@@CodeMonkeyUnity Yeah I am an application developer by trade and usually you work from some architecture, or idea of, or the framework you are using is promoting a sort of architecture. In Unity that is not obvious so that is why I am struggling but maybe what you say is the way to go. Just develop something and see where I end up.

It's pretty interesting idea, but what if I want to create a game that makes money? I already have experience, but pretty simple games like pacman or even Doom or generic WW2 shooter wouldn't make any money in steam. You're more likely to end up in the red because of steam fee I am making games for ~10 years (RPG Maker and Scratch mostly) and ~4 years on Unity, but only as hobby, nothing more. Most of games so simple that nobody would play it ( I have created 37 fully finished games). It would be great to make some money, but I am to scary to publish them I even published one free game to the Google Play and it got 5 000 downloads without any marketing, but I didn't got any profit from it
@CodeMonkeyUnity

There is a difference between the technical aspect of making a game, and learning how to sell that game. For the second part you need to study marketing, learn how to identify game ideas that have sales potential and how to make it seem exciting for potential players.

What I like about game development is writing code. But what I dislike is the art (3D and 2d) as I dont like that much. Also there is lighting , shaders , VFX ,audio etc we cant ignore. It is really hard to be a solo game developer as such. Though u have the AI tools to solve this issue (3D art), but there comes copyright issues or else u have to pay freelancers , which can be expensive ,if u r doing big games. So @CodeMonkeyUnity what would ur advice be, to deal with the not so fun part
@CodeMonkeyUnity
@CodeMonkeyUnity 5 месяцев назад
My advice is look in the asset store, there's a mountain of free stuff there. Environments, characters, VFX, shaders, and even some awesome tools. If you can afford to pay for it you can find more variety, but even for free there's mountains of stuff you can use in your games without copyright issues.
