Please don't feel like you're letting us down, or that you need to apologize for taking a break. I'm so glad that you're listening to your body and giving it the rest it needs. Even a mild case of covid is no joke, especially under those circumstances. I have complete confidence that you'll finish this trail, and I know it'll be easier and more enjoyable when you've recovered more fully from being sick.

Just keep smiling! You got this. It's great you are doing what you need to do to take care of your health. It doesn't matter where you get back on the trail. If you desire to be back out there then go where it works best for you. Remember it is your hike so hike it how you want. I just found your channel a couple of nights ago so I will watch your past videos until your are happy and healthy enough to get out there and whoop that trail. Well wishes to you both 🤙

Hi Kelly. That old Covid gives a person quite a kicking, so give your body a real good rest, and time to recover. I know you will be back on trail when your body says you can. Be strong and of good courage. I know things can be tough at times, but just reflect on all the GOOD things you have experienced on trail. All the beautiful sights you have shared with thousands of people who will never have the health or possibility of hiking those trails. We get to do it through your videos. One of the really big life changes you have experienced because of your hospital delay on the AT was James ! When I heard he was going on the PCT with you, I knew you would be OK, because James would always be there to help you through difficult times. God bless, and I look forward to you getting back on the trail. Aubrey

I was honestly amazed that ya'll continued hiking so soon, and I know it sucks that you guys had to come home but like other people are saying the trail will always be there. You and James surprised me when you got back on trail so quickly, there's a definite lingering physical hit from COVID. Your typical joy and energy wasn't as strong in the last videos, but you were certainly fighting it and that's a problem. This trail will be waiting when you return, any which way you return, and it will be better when you aren't fighting it. Get healthy first, get checked out for hiking a few weeks at over 10,000 feet, then decide your path. The trail will still be there 👟👟👟👟👟

Well, this one hit home for me. I'm a runner and was in the middle of a training plan when I got hit with covid... much the same symptoms as you've mentioned. After a few weeks of testing negative, I'm still having trouble getting my fitness back to pre-covid, even though I was only positive for a short time. It's SO frustrating. I'm glad that you made to decision to rest up... seems like the right thing to do. And definitely adjust the schedule to hike/meetup with your friends!!! That would be a no-brainer for me. Thanks for the update!

We were on the PCT, as well. Snow storm hit whilst we were in Idyllwild, so we had planned 2 days. Got to I-10 and just was dizzy and chills, etc. Ended up going into Banning. Stayed 2 days. Got back on trail…felt fine until we hit trail. That climb…the heat, the lack of water…and my sore lungs and the fever I now had. I was exhausted. Barely made 10 miles- but learned to “work” through sickness when I was younger to get through it more quickly…so it took 4 days to get to Big Bear. I knew something was wrong, though. I tested. Positive!!Everyone in our group had been having head colds, so we just thought that’s what we all had. Others tested, with just sniffles… positive! There must have been 30 of us together in that small bubble of trail friends…everyone else carried on. Our daughter was being deployed for a year, so we decided we would quarantine and then go see her off when we were good. Then we’d get back on trail. We tried after two weeks. Only made 2.5 days and I was having burning lungs and couldn’t catch my breath. My cough has since come back when I am trying to breathe…sooooo now we are almost 6 weeks off trail. Still not sure I can make it back this year. . . It sucks, because I was feeling moving and doing great…we would have been in the midst of the Sierras by now. I am not sure how long I will be able to wait to be able to finish this year!! However, long story just to say… sometimes, this happens. I did the AT last year, and I have never been a “quitter” . . . But sometimes God puts obstacles (people) in our lives to make us focus our lives on something else that needs focus. I am not sure what that is for me, if it ends up being too late for us to go back to finish this year….by the time I am able to breathe. 🫁 💨. However, I feel as if I am going to be ok now with whatever happens. It wasn’t my plan, but it IS in Gods plan…. So I will just wait and see 🥸. Prayers and healing to you both. May we will pass each other on this trail-all of us in great health and spirits … or on the CDT next year. God Bless xx- Reroute (aka the Reluctant Hiker) 😎❤️

Just rest and get better. Covid is no joke and your body needs time to heal. When you're ready, skip ahead and meet up with your hiking buddies, and meet your friends in Yosemite. What makes the trail so special is the people. The people you experience it with make it all the more special and memorable. And yeah, the desert will be brutal by the end of May. My advice? Simply Rest. Tale care of you. Then skip ahead. Hope you are feeling better soon. All the best to you and James --

Glad to see you are taking the time, and hope for your speedy recoveries. I think I mentioned before, you should get an incentive spirometer. The are pretty cheap. Keeping some stress on your lungs to keep them strong post-covid is really important. If you don't want to get an incentive spirometer, then do deep breath lung exercises (e.g. 20 count inhale 10 count hold 20 count exhale 10 count hold, repeat). When deciding the best place to get back out on the trail, I hope you will get your lungs rechecked to ensure any inflamation is gone. You do not want to go to elevation with already inflamed lungs, that is a recipe for disaster. Even if you lungs are all clear, I would plan your entry back onto the trail to give you some miles before you reach elevation. good luck!

Kelly, my husband and I love your videos but your health and James health are top priority. Speaking as someone who has just recovered from a second bout of COVID it took awhile to get back to normal. I too had what I would call a head cold with a cough. I tested and came up negative. A few days later with symptoms increasing, (at my daughters suggestion, she’s a veterinarian) I tested again and this time I was positive. I ran a fever for 24 hours and was super tired and I took a lot of naps (I never nap). I have two volunteer jobs and I hike twice a week so I know I was run down. This happened three weeks ago and I’m just now starting to feel better. So take your time and make sure you and James heal before you get back on trail, PS - My hubby never caught it from me. He takes a multi vitamin, vitamin D3 and Vitamin C. I just started taking the vitamins. Hang in there, we’ll be here, when you’re ready to get back on trail. Prayers for you and James continued recovery.🙏

I can feel with you. It may take time. I had similar symptoms after a very mild covid infection during which I still hiked the Kilimanjaro, but kept some light inflammation of the respiratory system for >3 months. Smart move (economically and phyically) to fly home and give your body time to fully recover and heal and gain strength. When I (a 62 yr old man) got sick with Covid-19 in December 2020 (before vaccines were available) I was down in bed sick for a week. Then started feeling better and by the end of my ten-day quarantine, I was feelng much better. I felt no issues with my lungs or heart (just light headedness, nauseous, feverish, and fatigued). So, on the 11th day, I went out for a 5k run (I'm a lifelong runner) to test if my heart and lungs were good to go, and they were. So, no long Covid for me. Sure hope you continue to recover and do so fully before you take up the trail again. Wishing you the best! No need to apologize to us, your followers. We understand and only want the best for you.

My father used to say you learn nothing in life from success. It is how we handle setbacks that determine our character and help us down the line. I look forward to seeing you continue your hike!

Hope you get well soon, but take it slow! My friend had mild covid, but now after a few weeks he is suffering from long covid. He gets exhausted just by walking down to the kitchen an back up again and has to take a nap afterwards
