In my experience, when I'm struggling, it's usually because I haven't done enough research. If you don't know what should happen, it's because you don't know enough about the setting and situations you're trying to put your characters through. And when you don't know enough, you dread the research because you can't know how much is enough until you find out what you need to know.
Finally, a creative acknowledging that flow/anxiety/mental is not the issue everyone thinks it is. Writing is no different from any other vocation or profession. If your plumber said they had "plumber's block" and said they can't fix your toilet today, or if a Doctor had "doctor's block", you'd rightfully call it out as nonsense. A writer who needs flow or the perfect time to write will never write anything. They're a hobbyist tourist at best. Stephen King write half of his collection on a tumbledrier on a 20kg "portable" typewriter. No excuses. Just write.
This is perfect timing for me. I have a short film I want to start but upon consulting with an experienced writer, they suggested I go for a feature instead and explained to break it down into a few scenes….then the anxiety kicked in. Hearing the same advice but from your perspective helps ease the anxiety and build confidence through baby steps. Great video!
Wow did I need this. I'm at two days of not writing after having written every day for the last few months and I was telling my wife just today - the longer I get away from the writing, the more I remember how much I feared writing when I wasn't doing it. I haven't felt like that for months (it has been great not feeling it), and today was the first day I felt it again. Thank you for the reminder - write tonight before I tuck in. Don't let one more day go by without writing.
