I'm a nurse AND a cancer survivor. One important tip to anyone: ALWAYS ask for printed copies of every test result, scan or other imaging report, and pathology report. You can also ask your hospital for copies of scans on a CD so that the next doc can view (with their own eyes) and imaging. Keep all your results together, and if you have a patient portal, download everything to your own computer so it's easily accessible for the next doc. Learning to take control of your cancer journey is not only important, but minimizes the feeling of helplessness. Keep track of the names and dates of everyone you speak to on the phone or at appointments. Wishing you all the very best, and a cancer-free outcome!

This is such such huge advice, because I had stage 3 cervical cells twice after my last two pregnancies. This was quite advanced I had laser colonoscopy then due to another issue to do with my ovary, I had a full hysterectomy. Truthfully this was more serious than I thought at the time, but I don’t feel it was ever at a life threatening levels although at the time it was taken very seriously especially as it was creeping up to my womb. The level is so important because if it is stage 1 pre cancerous it can sometimes be a watch and wait and can sometimes clear itself,

I just watched Hank Green and Grace Helbig go through their own cancers, and they both said "If you can, make cancer your job. It really is a full-time job to manage it." Set aside as many responsibilities you can to give yourself some space to manage this. I'm so sorry our healthcare system is making this your responsibility... You are such a rock star, and you will get to the end of this! Take as much time as you need/can. We're here for you!!
@alymj3304
@alymj3304 8 месяцев назад
While I completely agree with the sentiment in theory, it's a lot easier to "make cancer your job" when you have enough money to not need to do an actual job. The impact of financial privilege of the experience of being sick cannot be overstated, especially somewhere like the USA where illness is expensive and financial barriers, like varying levels of health insurance coverage, limit accessibility

Girl I’m so sorry to hear this. I’m actually a cervical cancer survivor myself and I’m sending you tons of love and support. You GOT this. I had stage 1 and they removed a part of my cervix but enough to get the cancer but I should 🤞🏽 hopefully be able to still conceive. May you get through this will grace and ease. Don’t be afraid. You GOT this. Your oncologist will send you to get a PET scan so they can confirm where the cancer is and if it’s local or spread to lymph nodes (God willing no). This is the process they go through to stage you. You will get through this. I promise. It is the scariest thing I’ve been through so you’re not alone sister. It’s scary. You will survive this.

I’ve lived with a chronic Leukemia for 14 years and I have heard and experienced it all, although I’m baffled at whatever took you so long to get an appointment with an Onc, holy-moly! It IS scary and no one tells you that a class is needed for how to be a cancer patient AND advocate for yourself! I have found my cancer center social worker has been a life-saver for me.🌸

I was diagnosed with cervical cancer in 2017. I completely understand how you are feeling. I ended having a hysterectomy but I kept my ovaries. I had micro invasive adenocarcinoma. My doctor didn’t know if I was going to need chemo and radiation until after I had my hysterectomy. Luckily the cancer didn’t reach my lymph nodes and I didn’t need chemo and radiation. I would join a support group for cervical cancer survivors. I found a couple of groups on Facebook. It’s good to talk to others who have or going through what you are through. I also ended up going to therapy to help my process what I had gone through.

I’m only half way through watching and just tearing up from the insanity and incompetence of insurance companies and how this could impact your health. It impacts your mental and physical health to go through this horrible treatment. It reminds me of my c-section to prevent a NICU stay and then the hospital refusal to let me OBGYN perform the surgery and then the hospital pediatrician pushing for NICU stay and unnecessary tests and work and insurance denying claims for months and months. No. Just no. You have cancer. You need every minute to fight it. You and the entire US deserve more. Thank you for your vulnerability ❤

It sounds like she may have had Medicaid or some government sponsored insurance because I have experienced the same with Medicaid. You call the insurance to see a doctor and they give you a list of three doctors that are approved under your insurance and then you call the doctors and they say they don’t accept your insurance or the number is disconnected or the doctor isn’t accepting new patients…. Long story short, I wind up paying out of pocket for some of my medical needs just because my insurance is so confusing and crappy that I feel like I’d rather just pay a fortune and rack up debt than not be medically treated correctly.

I worked with people with severe spinal injuries who needed immediate surgeries at times and insurance still denied them. It amazed me that when I spoke to so many insurance companies fighting back, how horrible the process for the person. I am so truly and deeply sorry that you have to walk through that. Our healthcare system is so messed up. Sometimes I would just ask the person straight up, “ could you imagine if you couldn’t walk I needed immediate surgery and had to wait over a month for that surgery because your insurance company is denying you? If your son or daughter was walking through this, don’t you think you do the same thing?” I’m so frustrated for you and it makes me excited to get to heaven one day, where all this will be a thing in the past

I work for an insurance company and this is SO frustrating to hear. It sounds like the type of plan you have requires referrals for a lot of things. I would call your insurance carrier to see if they have a case manager for oncology patients to help you due to the difficulty you are had in coordinating your own care. It doesn’t hurt to ask. I’m so sorry you’re going thru this as early detection is always encouraged but like you said , it’s he’s not to feel like you’re being penalized for it and set aside as “not a big deal”. Hang in there and keep advocating for yourself. You’re doing great and you are a model in patience with this process. **Squeeze hugs to you**

Wow Jessica, I was stunned to see your posting about your cancer dx. I watched your channel faithfully when my daughter was expecting our grandson, who BTW turns 4yrs this Valentine’s day. I learned so much from you which helped me be a better grandmother and mother to my daughter. I’m a retired nurse who worked for 46 yrs in the clinical setting. I will be 76yrs old in couple weeks so first, I’m giving you a great big hug , and validating your every concern. You need a patient advocate to help you navigate this mixed up health care system. Unfortunately for now you will your own best advocate. Get a notebook and get your records so they will be in one place. Make copies because you may need to hand them over at your Dr visits , or portions of them. Keep a timeline of when it started and who you talked to. What Insurance coverage denied you procedures or treatment. Time is of the essence!!! There’s no such thing as a “little bit of cancer” You are a young woman with 3 beautiful kids. I hope you meet the right Dr who does the right thing. You may need to loose your ovaries but if your cancer spreads to your ovaries you will never know till thats too late ( symptoms are hard to detect) I may be sounding harsh but I learned a long time ago to say what is true not necessarily what the patient wants to hear. Please keep us informed on this unexpected journey . I hope the comments you receive from this are positive. You need constructive support and ideas. It’s good for people to share their experiences, be kind and positive, and to the point. I will keep you and your family in my prayers,wishing you all the best!

I’m a physician ( USA and other countries) also post early stage cancer. Most doctors in the USA have zero understanding of the experience of being a patient. That translates into their lack of empathy. They should all need to be a patient at some point in their career to see what it is like on the other side. The lack of communication amongst different offices is a uniquely American phenomenon. One absolutely has to take charge of one’s own health since nobody else will do that and certainly not the doctors.

Jess, I’m so sorry you’ve had to go thru all this. This is absolutely NOT how things should work. Cancer is serious, regardless of the type or stage. The fact that all these physicians and medical staff are discounting the severity of your diagnosis is disheartening. I’ve gone thru a breast cancer diagnosis and treatment the past year and have learned that you have to advocate for yourself. It’s like these medical offices and doctors think you know what to do and who to call. It’s like damnit I’ve never had cancer before, I don’t know where the hell to even start. Insurance is the biggest PITA too. I went thru a handful of appeals myself until it went to external appeals and then I got approved! Stay strong and don’t give up. You’re worth it!!

I got diagnosed with cervical cancer on December 5 and i am currently 11 days post op from a radical hysterectomy. I thought waiting 1 month was terrible. I couldn't imagine being dragged around like you have. Have you had a pet scan? As soon as i was diagnosed with cancer i was sent a referral to get a pet scan and had it a week after the diagnosis and got the results that night that the cancer was only in my cervix with no measurable mass. Then, after the oncologist received those results was when they scheduled an in office appt, and then i had the surgery the day after the in office appt. I would be finding a new OB for not taking this seriously. I hope you're able to see a dr soon.

I am so sorry. 50 years ago, our family lived in Aviano, Italy where my father was stationed in the Air Force. My mother had some female issues & her Italian OB/Gyn told her this. He wished EVERY woman would get a total hysterectomy after having their children. He believed they were not needed organs & did not want ANY families to lose their wife/Mom to cervical/uterine/ovarian cancer. That is what my mom told my sister & I & we both got hysterectomies and we’re glad we did. No more heavy periods - yippee.

I am so sorry to hear about the diagnosis. You’re such a positive and uplifting person and it is so heartbreaking to know you’re on this journey. Even if it’s an “easy” treatment, I imagine the anxiety you feel is debilitating at times. I will be praying for you and your family as you move forward.

I don’t know if you remember me but we talked on the phone once, and that was such a gift to me. It still is. What a wild goose chase you’ve been on, I’m so sorry that the medical system has failed you in so many ways. That is unjust and invalidating. I am praying for you and sending you love from afar!! ❤❤❤

I’m so sorry about this Jess. Please document everything you go through, you don’t have to share but document everything!! This is an issue so many people, especially women go through. Im really rooting for you and I’m so sorry the system is so broken. I used to work in healthcare and I’m so familiar with the system

Loving on you through the screen. Impressed you were able to get through this explanation with so much pep and grace, I’d just cry out of frustration. I’m so sorry. You are truly a teacher and guide to your core because you’re still giving us advice while you’re in the thick of hardship. We will be holding your hand in spirit through it all. ❤

Sending you so much light, love, energy, peace, hugs 💜 I’m sorry you’ve been a victim of the horrible medical system. It’s not fair! Thank you for trusting us with this very hard information. I truly appreciate you for all the amazing things you’ve done, created, helped others with, your existence has been such a beautiful gift to this world. I’ve followed you for a long time. I wasn’t able to children (lost twins in 2005), but I still adore you & your channel. ❤

Oh Jess. I am so sorry. My child has extra medical needs, and so much of what you described of the nightmare of navigating the medical system hit home. Insurance is just the f***ing worst. It's so hard to find providers who really care, and ultimately no one is going to be more of an expert on your medical history than you. A few pieces of unsolicited advice: I've had multiple situations where we only got the help we needed when I started crying - for some reason that makes people listen! Once, I cried to an insurance coordinator in the ED and she was able to go advocate for us to the medical staff and finally get us seen after waiting for hours, so that taught me to ask EVERYONE no matter if you think they have the power to help or not. My other piece of advice would be to get cell phone numbers for medical staff if you possibly can. A lot of doctors won't be willing (and for good reason, I know they need work-life boundaries too!) but I have asked for and gotten cell numbers for a couple of nurse practitioners and it's really come in handy. I'll be holding you and your family in prayer ❤🙏

This is my first video of yours I have come across. I’m so sorry for all the frustration with insurance and medical providers. (I’m only halfway through the video) but I hope that you get that care and compassion you need and desire at the oncologist office. I worked oncology for 5 years as an RN. All of our team was wonderful and *normally* oncologist and the rest of the staff are angels and truly love and care for their patients!

WOW- I can’t believe you still have energy to laugh about it, May God Bless you, and guide you during this terrifying journey. I am ABSOLUTELY APPALLED at the way you have been treated since your diagnosis. It’s awful to have so little support from the health insurance people. You would think that they would make it more feasible for you to start your treatment ASAP- that way it would be less costly in the long run. I wish you God speed on this new journey.

I am seeing this 2 wks after it posted ...hoping (what I refer to as) "the crazy train" of mismanagement of your records/appts is finally straighted out. Empathy is powerful...it is a medicine for the soul when someone is going through life altering situations. As a survivor I total get it. For the reasons you mentioned I literally request a copy of ALL my test and scans etc. I pray things are moving along smoother and you are well on the way to getting the answers you need. ❤

I’m really sorry to hear about the issues you’re having with the medical system, that is so frustrating! I know someone who had blood clots in their leg and they had to wait two weeks for insurance to approve them to see a specialist! You would think blood clots, and cancer would be an urgent situation. Glad to hear you were able to see a new dr, hopefully things start moving a long quicker!
