Personal sacrifice for serving love. A positively puzzling concept since personal sacrifice can be a saintly act, motivated by love. Seems the writing/directing was too uncomfortable with showing a beautiful win-win potential exploited and instead wanted to force a point home - what if you don't have win-win but need to make a choice. That makes the story subtly preachy. With less ARRRRR it could have been peachy. Reminds me of that wisdom that writing works best if you also allow the story to tell itself. - Balance between control and chaos, reminding of the importance of love. A bit tragic since the story itself was about love as motivation.

@@dhinton1 If you believe that a child should be given the chance at an informed decision then you can't possibly disagree with this assessment. You're implying that denying a child the right to choose based on the influence of the current guardian is a proper thing to do to a young human being. That's just brainwashing by any other name. I'm sure it's fun, but kids aren't ones toys to play with. You shouldn't just design them, and cut pieces off their genitalia for style and fashion. You're supposed to treat them like genuine human beings. That means having the opportunity to decide for themselves, and if they're in an environment where they're being conditioned toward a violent life style that strips them of a family they were taken from, you're well within your right to want to make sure the child is in a position where it's what they want to do. Even then, what if there was sexual or macabre deviancies in this culture? What is it about this behavior that is so acceptable that other forms of abuse would not be? Where do you put your foot down at the mistreatment of a young man so distraught at the idea of not being around his obviously codependent relationship with an abusive culture to the degree he'd stab the captain of a starship in his sleep?

The question is do you traumatize the boy in pursuit of that. Jono was in a loving supporting environment and a culture that was all he knew. Ripping him away from that so he could live with his biological family just so he could say OK I've seen the human side now send me back to the man who raised me, is excessive. He's completely adopted and not in an abusive environment, but an environment that is loving and supportive in which he is thriving. This has always been one of my favorite episodes of TNG. Not because it's one of the best, but because it was a major turning point for Jean Luc Picard as a man, not as Captain. In a way, he and Data traveled on similar paths, always seeking to be the ideal of what they desired to be.

I always felt this episode had such a deeper meaning with the interactions. Jonah (sp) from a completely different culture and the Enterprise crew trying to turn him to their culture. I always felt this spoke of modern society and the absolute need of one culture trying to push their culture on another for whatever reason. Examples being Japan killing dolphins for food and Americans chastising them for doing so because it's not an American thing. Americans pushing culture on the middle East because we believe their customs are backwards. Etc.

Maybe it's a bit hokey, but I always felt Picard should have pulled a King Solomon there (just to make SURE the father wasn't abusing the boy). You know? Threaten to execute Jonah right there in front of him, unless he relinquishes his claim on the boy & allows them to leave in peace? (a bluff/test) Sure, it would have added another 30-60 seconds of dialogue, but I still think it would have been cool.

I remember Sisko had a similar but more complicated choice to make in DS9 with a Cardassian orphan that was raised by Bajoran parents and then was claimed by the boy's biological father. That decision left the boy being taken back to Cardassia by his biological father, leaving the only parents he ever knew and the only place he called home.

There is a very deep issue going on in this scene that requires introspection and a reflection on what values you hold. What you actually hold close and believe in. The role of power and the importance of freedom and free will. Self agency. When cultures rub against each other often you see values tested. Picard failed his own test of values and realized it only after its consequences hit him directly rather than those he was exercising his power and culture upon. He was lucky enough his small bout in what I would call cultural imperialism, the act of enforcing your own values and culture on another, didn't get him killed. In my experience most problems derive from similar situations. When one person wants to put their boot in another's face. While having good intentions, Picard was at the end of the day no better than a totalitarian with a smile. Your justification does not instantly become truth or reasonable because you applied force. Picard realized what he did and felt shame. He was wise enough to see what he was actually doing rather than what he was intending to do.
