Simply magnificent! Like being transported into a dream of their creation and your imagination. Peabo Bryson is glorious and Lea Salonga outshines the stars themselves. Greatest female artist ever. There is NO song or character ever conceived of she cant glorify. The beauty and passion of her voice are from the portals of heaven itself. No vocalist compares to the lady goat.
A MUSICAL IMPOSSIBILITY!! The pairing of Lea Salonga and Peabo Bryson on a scale of 1 to 10 is a Fifty!! Two voices unmatched as a combination since time began. Bryson is rivaled only by the great Josh Groban as a rich baritone vocalist. As for the lovely Princess Lea, she is the LADY GOAT of all Theatrical performers. Voicing two Disney princesses, this classic rendition and starring in Les Mis and Miss Saigon. She is in my opinion, completely without peer, before or since. What a treat to the listener to be enthralled by this incomparable pairing.
WOW 😮 i never knew they did an animated version of this absolutely incredible movie Going to find it and definitely purchase it asap The singing 🎤 is simply AMAZING KAZ 🇬🇧😮🙏🏽👏🏾👍🏽🙌🏽😊😘💖👌🏾🥰😎
The reason why the voices don't fit the characters very well, is because this recording is from the 1992 studio cast recording..which has a very different version of the story and different voices for the characters that sing this song..if this is even in the animated movie. Regardless, the cast that this recording is from has Julie Andrews in it..which makes it spectacular. Note: If you're looking for this recording it's the 1992 Studio Recording!
[TUPTIM] Alone and awake I've looked at the stars, The same that smile on you; And time and again I've thought all the things T hat you were thinking too. I have dreamed that your arms are lovely, I have dreamed what a joy you'll be. I have dreamed every word you whisper. When you're close, Close to me. How you look in the glow of evening I have dreamed and enjoyed the view. In these dreams I've loved you so That by now I think I know.
@H1delta Well, now I have to head over to Amazon and get some Sarah Vaughan! I'll look for a good 5-star box set. Another great jazz singer was the late Joe Williams. Smooth, baby smooth. He never lost his voice or had to compensate for it as he got older. Well, I think we need to move along. Anyone stumbling onto this RU-vid page for Lea Salonga will wonder how it turned into a retro lounge!
@CartoonJessie there's an even older black and white Anna and the king, with rex harrison as the king, and irene dunn as anna. it also had Linda darnel as tuptim. it came before the musical play.
If this is from the soundtrack of the 1999 animated version of King and I, then the singing voice of Tuptim belongs to Tracy Venner Warren, and that of Chulalongkorn (not Lun Tha in this movie) is David Burnham.
I am talking about the ORIGINAL movie and that one IS really old. It had Yul Brynner and Deborah Kerr and was based on the musical by Richard & Hammerstein. It's from the 60s somewhere. I'm not talking about Anna and the King, since it was based on Anna Leonowens journals, not on the musical. The story was a bit different and more grown up and it didn't involve all the singing and dancing.
My only complaint is that the audio DB was too low, so we were unjable to hear their great voices. I'd love to hear more of Peabo and Lea singing together.
@yeahitsme58 Yeah, I'm surprised it's not on RU-vid already. I have the full soundtrack from the film (take it we're talking about the one with Yul Brynner) - maybe I should get on it!... :)
@TheStockwell As much as I like It Was A Very Good Year, my favorite Sinatra song is All The Way. I was much younger then (1957?) but I knew good music when I hear it. I've read somewhere that he considered Vic Damone & Tony Bennett his superior. I disagree with him here. The only one that equals his singing & phrasing is Nat King Cole who could paint a picture with his words. But if you want to put your loved one in a romantic mood, Frank is the man. Hope you had a good holiday.
@TheStockwell I may be a bit strange but I didn't much care for Ella. I don't know why. I can't even think of a song she sang. I also didn't think much of Della Reese. I've always preferred Sarah Vaughan. Sarah was great in the beginning & improved with age. It probably explains why I have several albums by Sarah & none from Ella or Della. Nobody sang Misty like Sarah. Not even Mathis. On the other hand, I prefer Nina Simone's Porgy over Sarah's. And I could listen to both all day & I do.
As much as I love The King & I, I don't really care for this animated version. WHY did the WB people have to make it like a Disney film??? They completely RUINED it! If you think Grease was ruined by its movie version, look at this and think again! At least Grease still has dignity.
wooooh,....that's our very own LEA SALONGA.......... she has a great voice...i'm a big fan of lea salonga...she opened a big door for filipinos in hollywood....we filipinos her kababayans in philippines love her so much you really make us proud Lea... :) i really like the musicals.,,,the classic disney musicals are greater than new musicals...basta...its really different..just watch it...their voices and blending are more better...go lea salonga... we ♥ you....
Man I love this show. This is such an In Whatever Time We Have moment, what with the man singing first to the woman and convincing her to love him and all, and then the prince with servant girl. Yonah and Japheth would be proud.
I have this on VHS!!! A double film with the king and I then the sword of camelot :P I always used to wind this film forward to watch camelot. Will watch these tonight!
I own this movie...and one thing I want to say is that when I was younger I used to like this movie...but now I watch it now...and I find that I was actually really disappointed that they left out the Uncle Tom's Cabin ballet in this version
[LUN THA] I have dreamed that your arms are lovely, I have dreamed what a joy you'll be. I have dreamed every word you whisper. When you're close, Close to me. How you look in the glow of evening I have dreamed and enjoyed the view. In these dreams I've loved you so That by now I think I know What it's like to be loved by you, I will love being loved by you.
@kern39743 Yes, on "The Concert Sinatra" album. Brilliant orchestral arrangements by Nelson Riddle and Sinatra's singing is astonishing. It's an amazing and overlooked album. It's the one I pass on to people who wonder if Sinatra could REALLY sing.
It's an animated movie from Warner Bros. If I'm not mistaken it's somewhere from between 1997 and 1999. Name is "The King and I". There's also a movie, a REALLY old one from the 60s or something called the same way. It's the same story, the same songs, only much longer! (Like 3 hours or something). I'm not sure if *this* song was in that movie too. I think it has to be, but not sure.
Very lovely yet I still like the English version, because that's the one I am used to...maybe this is the English version but it sounds different than I remember the Prince's voice being. Hmm, well thanks for the upload!
@H1delta Sinatra thought Nat King Cole and Ella Fitzgerald were the tops. He was amazed at Cole's smoothness and the fact that he played the piano effortlessly, something Sinatra couldn't do. Ella he just plain adored. On one of his television specials they sang a few duets and then he just gets out of her way. It's great seeing him sitting on the steps, smilling like a kid and thinking, "Dude, I totally know Ella Fitzgerald!" Best to you from San Francisco.
@TheStockwell I'd avoid those people who "wonder if Sinatra could really sing". I'm a big fan of Francis Albert but not his version of this. It's good but we're talking about Lea. And when Lea sings a song, she sings a song. But IMO, Frank's "September of My Years" album is his best. All of the songs are great, especially "It Was A Very Good Year". And his "Hello Young Lovers" from the same play this song was sung is a classic. Peace be with you.
especialy as a dumbed down sappy cartoon. They made the kralahome into an evil sorcerer with a chubby sidekick, got rid of luntha, and made chulalongcorn older, to be tuptim's love interest. they also changed tuptim from a concubine to a simple slave girl, and got rid of the "uncle thomas" ballet. They gave louis a pet monkey, and kept the king alive at the end, what's up with that?
to MissHB90 - at the risk of introducing reality into fantasy - in the King and I as well as the story upon which it was based, Anna and the King of Siam, which was a true account of the experiences of an Englishwoman in Siam, Tuptim and her lover were both executed. I haven't seen the Disney version, but if either character survived, someone was not being true to the original. When considering other cultures, it is a good idea to know what actually goes on in those cultures.
@EnchantressLaina Dunno if anyone's commented on this before to you but, these aren't the originals, not even the guy. That's why his voice sounds so old, compared to the character's age. Personally, I like the original Tuptim's singing voice instead. But that's just my opinion.
@H1delta There's room for everyone to sing this song. I' like you - I don't think you need to prove you enjoy a performance by slamming different one. Even Sinatra fans get into fights over his best albums. One group says the ONLY stuff worth hearing in the early Capitol years recordings.Others say that nuts, that his talent peaks with Reprise. Why not have it ALL? I can have Sinatra's "Everything Happens to Me" CD next to Salonga's "Inspired." Best wishes to you, H1delta.
