Today, I visited the Holland Village of Singapore. It's an area the Dutch community made in early 1900s. You can find many lively bars, Western food and lots of landed houses in this area.
But my goal today was to look for the Holland windmills and the remains of the villages. Was it successful?

Holland Village was named after Holland Road, which in turn was named after Hugh Holland in 1907; Holland, an architect and amateur actor, was an early resident of the area. It does not have anything to do with the country Holland. There used to have a shopping center which was demolished called the windmill.

Ghib Ojisan, i have an assignment for you. There is a old uncle who used to be cobbler in Yishun Interchange. He is a Japanese but brought up by SIngapore Chinese because his mother married a local chinese. When he knows more about his heritage, he self learnt Japanese. I remember that his daughter took up his trade. There is also a tution centre ran by Japanese descendant which i read in newspaper. Both stories, i read it in newspaper. Maybe, you can link up with them and broaden your knowledge about them and maybe, share it here :))

The other "Holland" aspect of Holland village are the low rise HDB flats that are along the intersection of Commonthwealth Avenue and Holland Avenue. These low rise HDB are bulit using Dutch bricks. These are red bricks that were first developed by the Dutch.

There was a small replica of a minature windmill just a few years ago but they took it down. long long time ago HV used to be an attap kampung village around Jln Kelabu asap that your video shown briefly most of the land was owned by 1 chinese family who is the Holland Village shopping building owner but the government i think took back most of the land owned by them but even then it had never lost it's charm I dunno about the dutch but the area used to be popular with RAF pilots and their families back when Singapore was a british colony after they shipped out for a long time different groups came and lived there the odd expat family or embassy staff for different embassies even foreign nurses lived there, sometimes some big businessman will install their girlfriends and mistresses there - I lived around the place off and on once in 1975 and another time around year 2000. The food used to be really good but gov interference or food vendors grown old nobody to take over so now all the new food taste like crap imo.

It's now become a place to relax and chill. Also, the place with the cafes and boutiques are near where the British government staff used to stay, and now belongs to the Singapore government.
