This song is about a person who is dealing with depression and self hatred and engages in depravity and sexual addiction to make themself feel happy. The whole album is about a downward spiral

HAHAHAHA. Aw dude. What a way to start. At least you’re taking it seriously - lot of reactors immediately dismiss it, because it’s seriously unnerving. I’m with other commenters - avoid videos in generals, this band (like Tool) made anti-videos. As a lifelong NIN fan, if you wanna see what they’re about I’d go with these, in order: Head Like a Hole, Something I can Never Have, Burn, Mr. Self Destruct, I Do Not Want This, Just Like You Imagined, The Hand That Feeds, Only. But it’s legit nightmare music. Cathartic for some, a big NOPE for others. I find it beautiful.

You can't just jump into the Downward Spiral on one song.. the album needs listened from start to end. Its a story.. an emotion.. a feeling.. a lifestyle.. hate, aggression, fear.. this was Trents dark time. You can't process Closer without Eraser, or Reptile as you can't process Hurt without the Full Downward experience. His discography reflects his life, maturing as he ages in content.

I've seen NIN a dozen times! Had a shrine of Trent n the 90's. Lol. This is a deep and amazing rabbit hole to go through. Downward spiral, Pretty Hate Machine, The Fragile, Broken got me thru ALOT of dark times!!!!!!!! Trent was going thru dark places, hence Downward spiral...Something I Can Never Have, Terrible Lie, Reptile, Omg- everything Trent touched turned to gold!!! He is so talented in every way. Dont let this song detach u. He gets very very very deep. Its art and his darkness...Keep going!!! LMAOOOOO take your time collecting your thoughts. It was alternative grunge... You cant give up on one song...go deeper... listen to Something I Can Never Have and close your eyes. Listen to the album. U probably shouldn't have started with that song. Lol

This time period was a crazy adventure into the underground dance club scene for me. A time when DJ’s were analog and live sampling of loops was a pipe dream for most because it was ridiculous expensive. My favorite one here in Atlanta was mon Cherie’s the Chamber. Was an S&M dance club with dancers in cages, an adult toy store, a huge dance floor & stage with a light show better than most touring artists and regularly scheduled shows with whips, chains and candle wax. Like I said, CRAZY!! Imagine that remixed and blasting at around 300-500k Watts, pumping through 4 double 22* subs at the corners of the dance floor and concert speaker arrays flying above your head!

You've already heard one of Trent's songs: Hurt. Johnny Cash made it his own, but it was originally and NIN song. Head Like a Hole: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-ao-Sahfy7Hg.html , The Perfect Drug :ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-dn3j6-yQKWQ.html , The Day the World Went Away ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-TfKTgx15jag.html , and Leaving Hope: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-R-aEUmz32f4.html . I figure all that will confuse you even more!

@aricp9173 Год назад
@@Prone2Thrill He realized that Johnny had made a different song using the same lyrics. A man who is dying can look at a song in a far different way than a younger man can. I figure it was hard for Trent at the time, but he saw that the song touched people in a far different way than in Trent's version, so it was easier for him to see the same song can have different meanings. That's a sure sign of maturity on Trent's part and I applaud him for it.

Just like it's written during the video, these are _images du monde_ (pictures of the world) from the main character of the video point of view. About the origins of the group name, Trent Reznor (who is basically Nine Inch Nails when in studio, he choses the members of the band according to his current inspiration) said he checked out around 200 different names before having his thoughts fixated on "Nine Inch Nails" during two weeks. So he took the right decision.

According to Wikipedia Trent Reznor said this song is about self-hate and obsession and to Trent Rezros dismay people often confuse it for being about lust but it is actually a very self-destructive song.I think when he was addicted to cocaine he would often feel very self-destructive so this song is probably his way of channelling those feeling.

The name Nine Inch Nails doesn't have anything to do with the crucifixion, contrary to old as dirt fan theories. From American Songwriter Magazine: Though there’s been much debate about what inspired the name Nine Inch Nails, Reznor asserts that he chose the name for its simple abbreviation, NIN, and not for any specific meaning. Reznor revealed in a 1994 interview with Axcess that he came up with around 200 potential band names, but none of them stuck. “I don’t know if you’ve ever tried to think of band names, but usually you think you have a great one and you look at it the next day and it’s stupid,” he said at the time. “Nine Inch Nails lasted the two-week test, looked great in print, and could be abbreviated easily. It really doesn’t have any literal meaning. It seemed kind of frightening-tough and manly. It’s a curse trying to come up with band names.” Among the many theories fans came up with about the band name’s origin is that it was a reference to Jesus’ crucifixion on the cross, with nails that were supposedly nine inches long, or that the name was a nod to the nine-inch fingernails Freddy Kruger bore in A Nightmare on Elm Street. But Reznor put those rumors to rest in an interview for the book Electro Shock!: Groundbreakers of Synth Music published in 1999. “It was just a name,” he said of how he came up with Nine Inch Nails. “Everyone’s got their theory on that-nailing Jesus to the cross, or this and that. But it just came up. I liked it. I liked the way it looked in print, and it passed the two-week test.”

This video, despite its simplicity, is by far one of the best ever made, I remember that when I was a child in the 90s, the only channel that could transmit it was PlayboyTV because it was beaten from all sides. And it is that both the music and the video is sadism in its maximum splendor, but it is precisely the intention of Trent Reznor who created a masterpiece.

"You let me violate, desecrate, penetrate, complicate you." Not "I want to . . . you." That IS easing you into it. "You" are acquiescing to "my" actions. Whether or not "you" consent, "you" offer no resistance. "You" are totally impassive and remain totally impassive throughout the song. "You get me closer to God." My favorite part is the second verse: You can have my isolation. You can have the hate that it brings. You can have my absence of faith. You can have my everything.

Industrial can be best understood by the song "Reptile". You'll know exactly what Industrial rock is....
@Mx.RumpusParable
@Mx.RumpusParable Год назад
Remember that Depeche Mode has a lot of industrial songs.... it's actually a wide spectrum genre, I made mention in a previous comment a few moments ago when suggesting an industrial group. A big thing of this album is that you *were* thrown into NIN with the one people like to shock people with. It's a concept album where this is a step in a person falling apart and outside the context of the stages of the album it can just come across as jarring - and/or exactly how the reviews you read said about how people mistook/mistake it as purely a sexual song. Basically folks like to suggest this one as a start to NIN *because* the total lack of context for it shocks/confuses people, not because they particularly want the person to get a feel/taste of NIN. It's a "f*** with the reactor" song game people do.. I'd honestly, I think suggest the songs from their first album, maybe Sin and The Only Time as better places to start NIN in total. From this album I'd say the song Reptile or maybe the earlier song they won the Grammy for Wish. Both are in his heavier end of stuff. A very touching one from this album that isn't heavy sounding is Hurt.
@thetheatrezoo3603
@thetheatrezoo3603 Год назад
The Downward Spiral is one of the best albums out there. It opens with Mr. Self-Destruct with sound samples from THX1138 which sound like gunshots but are actually from one of George Lucas' first films (and where the sound system THX came from) which is about a dystopian society like 1984, mind control, and heavy force to maintain the society. And it ends with Hurt, one of the saddest song out there which was remade by Jonny Cash and taken on a whole new life. If you listen to the 3 song combo of Big Man with a Gun, A Warm Place, and Eraser, you go through a full range of rage, depression, and self-destruction. It is amazing. It's not about rape, it's about addiction and obsession. A Perfect Drug fits right in line with Closer. (As a person, Trent Rezor is actually pretty calm now. Married with like 4 kids) I was visiting a friend in Chicago who was roommates with a couple of young women (one being Judy Greer), and one of her roommates told me flat out, that Closer turned her on so much that if a guy came up to her in the club and said that, she'd take him up on it. Obviously, it doesn't have the same impact now. Trent Rezor has now won Grammys, CMT awards and Oscars. He was inducted into the Music Hall of Fame and was the introducer for The Cure, which is another era defining band. You should check Song Exploder where Trent Rezor talks about Hurt.

Rammstein will leave you in a state of shock. Their live stuff is all for the fans. Fire, explosions, mechanical insanity, and pretty much all in German. But a band that has stayed together for many years and gives it all for the fans. You're going to need translations, an open mind, and a willingness to look past the show and videos, and listen to the words and the feeling they give you. They've had their moments of controversy, but their Live in Paris and New York (and a few other places) show that the fans come first.

I know this is an old video, but I couldn't find any other NIN reaction on your channel, so... I recommend either Head Like a Hole, Terrible Lie, or Wish as entry points for early NIN. Alternatively, The Hand That Feeds and Only are also good entry points, from what I consider to be NIN's most "mainstream" rock album. Finally, what I *really* think you should do is check out the 2013 live version of All Time Low. Musically, it has a funkiness that will remind you of closer, but the live version especially will give you a hint of the variety that awaits you down the NIN rabbit hole.

You MUST listen to a few more songs before judging NIN or Industrial music like Front 242 and Nitzer Ebb etc. Try NIN and David Bowie in "I'm afraid of Americans" and when you eventually get to Marilyn Manson who went even farther. Gary Numan was a huge influence on Trent and did some concert appearances as well.

I don’t think the desecration is in a forced sense. I think it sounds consensual but intense. To be honest I wouldn’t know how to get you into NIN gently. I don’t think that’s really possible. Nine Inch Nails was a name that was named after the nails that were used to crucify Jesus. Still a great band!!;

That's just a made up fan myth from a hundred years ago.

My nephews used to play this in their teen years just to make their mom ( my sister -in-law, may she rest in peace) have a morally outraged meltdown ha. She definitely only took the song at face value as a nasty demonic type song and I myself see numerous possible subtextual meanings behind the lyrics and find the music unsettling yet compelling with that driving beat. I was never that into NIN, but I do really like 2 of their songs, Head Like a Hole and The Perfect Drug.
