Hi Tony! Some great questions and funny statements. The dirty deed one applies to everyone but government who simply raise taxes to cover the cost. 😉 “ The jig is up” dates back to Elizabethan England. At that time a ‘jig’ was not a dance, but a practical joke or trick. So the phrase meant people were onto what you were trying to pull. “In like Flynn.” Dates back to New York political Boss Edward J. Flynn who held office from 1922 to 1943. No one dared vote against him. Also, if you were running for a political office an Flynn endorsed you it was almost guaranteed that you would be elected. So if you’re in like Flynn, you’re there for the long haul. “Piss Poor” originally referred to a group of poor people whose meagre income came from collecting urine from pubs and other gathering places to sell to gunpowder manufacturer. The chemicals in urine are used to make saltpetre, a compound used to make black powder. “Naked as a jay bird”. Well this is the U.S. version of the English “naked as a Robin”. Why either a Robin or a jay was chosen to represent being stark naked has been lost in the mists of history. Thanks for another great episode. Oh, an a HAPPY ANNIVERSARY to you two love birds! 🙂🙏🏻💕
In answer to piss poor! People used to use urine to tan animal skins, so families used to all pee in a pot & then once a day it was taken and sold to the tannery.......if you had to do this to survive you were "Piss Poor". But worse than that were the really poor folk who couldn't even afford to buy a pot......they "didn't have a pot to piss in" & were the lowest of the low.
Piss poor, probably links to "They don't have a pot to piss in." Before indoor bathrooms, a pot was used so they didn't have to go outside to the outhouse in the winter. Not everybody could afford that 'Special pot'.
Thanks. By the way, that's where the term 'water closet' came from. They kept the pot in a closet, so the user could have privacy, then later added a drain and a gravity fed water tank up high with a pull chain, to flush. The first indoor toilet was born. Later a sink was added in case the Sears catalog page ripped...
