As a 26 year old kpop stan, I think its fair to assume that most of the kpop stans trying to cancel these idols are either minors and/ or have never watched a single anime in their lives AND dont know how to differentiate fiction from reality because my time line was a hell hole for a whole 24 hours
@xindanobody8591
@xindanobody8591 7 месяцев назад
Not just anime, sadly, because it started crossing into (like shown here, and what I saw through the meltdown that day) - any form of fiction (live action, book, manga, anime - etc) that had that sort of stuff. Majority of whom I saw (both in KPOP twt and anitwt) were all around the ages of young teens (as in just allowed to use twt unless they're younger than that) to young adults (low to mid 20s at most). I was so glad that on my actual TL either people didn't know anything about it or were pissed that people couldn't separate fiction/reality (as you said).

trust me most of these people trying to cancel were just basically misandrists waiting for something more reasonable to hate men, they're girl group stans, ofc not all of them hate men but a good part of them does and they really awful things, even troll accounts took advantage of these situations, i think someone even might have got doxxed because they said they shouldn't be called pedos, it's really crazy, but the scandal started from korean fans of txt soobin who found something more reasonable to criticize him rather than for his recent scandal (doing the middle finger with his toes to another idol, on a private live that got leaked, also not recent) and then it got here

from what I've observed, a lot of the loud newer/younger kpop fans LOVE to act "holier than thou," ESPECIALLY when it comes to groups they don't like. there's this whole "my faves aren't problematic but yours are" thing going on, and it's continuously gotten worse over the years now that kpop isn't a niche interest. that word, "problematic," is thrown around _a LOT._ this just seems to be an extension of that. somebody didn't like TXT, so they found an interest of one of the members that could be seen as "problematic." somebody didn't like NCT so they found an interest of one of the members that could be seen as "problematic." and so on, and so on. there also seems to be a group of western kpop fans who _really_ want to prove that they themselves are just _so much better_ than the average Korean. like... so much more "woke," but they _think_ they mean the actually good version (i.e. "racism and homophobia are bad"), but they fall into the bad version (i.e. "liking a dark show makes YOU bad") by trying so hard to prove it. they _look_ for reasons to put themselves on a pedestal, so they continuously lower the bar for what is considered "problematic."
@lightishredgummi9654

oh! I just remembered that I have a recent example of some kpop stans making up issues! there's a recent song by a male artist featuring a female artist that I was watching a lyric video of. there were only three commenters: two praising the song and congratulating the artists on a job well done, and one yelling at the video creator and the other two (both in direct replies and their own comment) to quit shipping the two artists. literally _nobody_ there was shipping them, and I have yet to see _anyone_ ship them. I replied basically telling them to knock it off, wondering if maybe there was one or two since-deleted comments shipping them that had set them off. but, in my youtube notification of their reply, their name was shown as "f*** [group name] and their stupid [fandom name]" and suddenly _it all made sense._ they're just the type of stan to do that sort of thing.

@rhynochi
@rhynochi 7 месяцев назад
Yeah, not even just being morally righteous. There's def been a huge change in how kpop stans behave overall. Back when it wasn't as popular like 2nd gen, the fandom kept to themselves. They weren't trying to interact with other non-kpop fandoms or even think of spamming memes or videos of their fav idols. But like now fans will straight up go onto ppl's unrelated tweets or like tragedy posts and be like "should've stanned -KPOP band here-" or even photoshop memes or videos that honestly make the idol look horrible (like I think Loona had something similar. The group did nothing wrong, the fandom just made a meme where they seemed like a member had beef with a western artist idr) and I was like....outsiders are now gonna hate your group now why???? inside the fandom knew it was a meme but outsiders aren't gonna understand because it's obviously not outrageous enough to be like wow that'd never happen if they don't know that it's a kpop idol who has never met a western artist before. I think the change in behavior was really lead by being influenced by unfortunately kind loud but weird older fans while the ones that are more logical and reasonable and not holier than thou with egos or seek out like being a popular fan amongst fans kind of kept to themselves or outgrew being in the kpop fandom and just enjoyed the music. Some kpop fans were always weird but like....the I remember when kpop idols used to visit CA and Disneyland and just got to be normal ppl in foreign countries. But now they can't go anywhere without being stalked and mobbed. We used to be like damn korean saesaeng/stalker fans are crazy and there was no real notable cases of such behaviors internationally in 2nd gen. But now it's like there's sasaengs everywhere.

It's a lot of the younger generation in general that is doing this. You'll see it a lot on twitter and other social media. They'll try and ruin anyone's lives for enjoying any piece of media that has any "problematic" type of content like loli (made in abyss) or incest (game of thrones), regardless of if said content is the main point of the show or game.

I am 28 and have been into K-pop on and off since 2012 and when I see kids doing stuff like this, it is ridiculous and pathetic to me. Most of these guys lack the ability to have a deeper understanding, because their brain hasn't been fully developed yet. When I see the younger generation of K-pop fans are loud and obnoxious, my reaction is mostly: y´all need to sit down! Your brain is fully developed until you are 26. And from what I have observed in the world in general, this is not only a K-pop issue. The younger generation in general is like this. When I see them calling out "problematic" issues, I just can't take it seriously.

@@hollo0o583 in the Kpop fandom the word 'stan' means the same thing as 'fan' unlike in any other case where its meaning describes obsessive fanning. @@hollo0o583 actually in the kpop stans community if you say you're a fan means you're a casual listener, probably enjoy the music or the content from time to time, but the stans are the ppl who know the names of the idols and always watch the content and comebacks, it takes a lot of time and energy (including going to concerts, collecting albums or photocards..etc.) i guess that's why ppl refer themselves as stan because it's slightly a bit more than just a fan. But in that means is not yet being a toxic stan, ppl who are overly and crazyly obsessed with the idols are called sasaengs or just toxic kpop stans ( stans who attack other communities for the slightest things or other fandoms and don't even respect their own favourite idols sometimes). Stan twt is a shit hole where people will do anything to find dirt to expose idols they hate. I am telling you this is absolutely zero about morals and 100% having something so they can cancel an idol and justify sending them hate. Usually cancelling an idol would involve actual crimes in korea like drugs or sex trafficking. Nowdays they just grab something with the slightest bit of gray moral and exaggerated in a way that's damning for the idol. As someone who loves kpop and anime, it's funny to me that these fans go after anything and calls it problematic but they support minors debuting in a predatory industry. It's wild to me how they see issues everywhere but their own fandom. I will say that the younger fans (as a whole) are becoming more and more puritanical. I really want to see studies and video essays years from now talking about how gen z/alpha swung too far into purity culture. It could just be issues with being chronically online, it could be the holier than thou attitude the younger gens seem to have. Idk but I promise we're all not like this lol I will say its funny that most of them stopped talking once a girl group member was found to also support this show. There is a huge issue with boy group fans vs girl group fans online and I wish it would just stop. It's as stupid as fans vs fans.
@xindanobody8591
@xindanobody8591 7 месяцев назад
That's actually a good point about minor idols. I DO see a lot of people complaining about that (generally speaking), but I doubt the ones that were screaming at THIS situation were the same that would also fall in line with what you said. I also was complaining about the purity-level and the need to cancel in another comment on this video and yeah. I completely agree with you. I think it's sad that because the fandom is SO LARGE, the toxic ones are the loud ones, thus they're the ones that get seen. Doesn't help that they are of the incredibly violent level, too. I have also found a lot of those that fall into that line of thinking are the 13-23 year olds... I did NOT know that about the girl group member, though...

I have been in multiple arguments with people whose arguments have been 100% proven wrong by ACTUAL sources such as authorities, and they just disregard it entirely and will still continue hating on the person. Honestly, this is not just a K-Pop stan issue. This is a current generation issue. Something about these youngsters being so out of touch with reality because they were in lockdown for two years. They treat fictional characters like they’re real people, fighting for pixelated/2D rights and condemning anyone who dare enjoy the fictional characters as fictional. Meanwhile, they treat real people as if we’re fictional, throwing slurs and sui baits and perish/dox/non-con threats. It’s a whole mess that makes you wonder where tf did it go oh so wrong? This “controversy” should never have happened. But all because some kids (and, embarrassingly enough, adults, usually younger) can’t be bothered to treat fiction as fiction and mind their own business about people’s preferences.

I bet this came up because Made in Abyss is sort of being talked about online now and kpop stans have to kpop stans and find controversy in every recent events in relations with the idols. While I'm not fluent in Korean, Soobin used the verb 재미있다 which can be, and usually is, translated to mean "to be fun" but can also mean "to be interesting." Whether intentional or not (though I do have my own opinion) someone messed up the translation and made a bunch of foreign stans think that Soobin was calling the anime fun. What confuses me is that by getting super upset at these idols, we are implying that its unacceptable to consume media that tell stories that are dark and disturbing AND that by consuming that media we are condoning the messed up things portrayed in the media. I am not an anime fan at all, but I am a kpop stan and have been for almost 10 years and I can say that the community is full of extremely young and naieve women most of whom have a huge heart towards suffering and have been trained by the internet to be hyper reactionary when it comes to being defensive over groups of vulnerable people. However, when you walk around with a hammer everything starts to look like a nail. It is sickening the number of adult men that prey on underage folks, that is an absolute fact. I think though we all agree that the consumption of media that contains graphic scenes and messed up premices doesn't necessarily mean that you condone that character or that behavior. While I have absolute compassion for those who feel the need to stay on alert from creeps it is not okay to call people disgusting names over what is, at its core, a nothing burger

Hi, Korean American here. You're correct about the word "fun" being an awkward translation. The original word Soobin uses in that quote is a form of "재미있다" - which can mean "enjoyable" or "interesting." It's not exactly incorrect to translate it to "fun," but it oversimplifies the speaker's original intent based on context.

The controversy is dead now. An idol from a popular group was friends with a new idol who has been surrounded by controversy recently, and the way things move in the kpop community is once the floodgates open the internet people move like locusts devouring anything and everything that could put anyone under scrutiny. And this controversy was just another attempt at character defamation. This is how the community acts unfortunately and stuff like this happens all the time. I’m a Kpop fan, and an anime fan. I’ve been an anime fan since 2010, and a Kpop fan since 2011. When my bf and I started dating, he really wanted me to watch Made In Abyss with him, because it’s his favorite anime. At that point in time, I had never heard of it so I was open to it, simply because it was something he said he loved. Before we watched it though, he said to me “Okay. I have to warn you. This anime can actually be pretty hard to watch. The fact that the main characters are kids makes it harder to watch rather than if they were adults or teenagers. Knowing that, do you still want to continue?” And then I had flashbacks to when I watched Higurashi and Elfen Lied and thought “As long as it’s not like those two, I think I’ll be good” I ended up loving it. He and I actually both had the flu when season 2 just finished airing so we binged the whole thing through a video call lol

You know what’s insane? Lots of kpop idols and other celebrities have openly stated they like stuff like Squid Games or The Glory but they can’t handle their idols watching something equally disturbing just because it’s anime and it’s unfamiliar.
@cinnamonroll96
@cinnamonroll96 7 месяцев назад
not to be that person but i would say made in abyss is a lot more disturbing let's be honest. if kids are a part of something horrible it's always worse. Edit: Also I don’t think that people have a problem with traumatizing, messed up twisted stories in general. But rather the execution or inclusion of some forms of violence and shock factors, especially if kids are involved. Also I think if I saw some random scene of squid game without context, just someone being dead, that wouldn’t disturb as much. Maybe seeing the minutes up to the death yeah. But I think anime can create images and visual horror in only pictures that live action hardly can achieve. I think seeing some and more scenes or pictures of made in abyss out of context and without knowing what it is would shock me to my core. Those shows are just disturbing for different reasons. And I think both are very hard to stomach but one is just worse bc of animation, bc of kids and bc of scenes with kids that even in this story shouldn’t be there (and that is the real problem of those ppl).
@kpopnimation
@kpopnimation 7 месяцев назад
@@cinnamonroll96 what makes Made in Abyss more disturbing besides the characters being kids? Also, personally, I could stomach stuff like Castlevania or Vinland Saga even though I couldn’t get through The Glory because even though the things like Castlevania are equally or more disturbing, my threshold for disturbing content in animated things is higher than live action.
@cinnamonroll96
@cinnamonroll96 7 месяцев назад
@@kpopnimation I think that’s exactly it. The fact that these characters are kids make it more disturbing. I don’t know the glory. But squid games is about something disturbing, messed up and mentally just twisted. I still would say the things you see are just more disturbing for a lot of ppl. A lot more to stomach, bc of all the mind-destroying shit you watch, the gore and all this. And this in combination with kids going through it, makes the already very messed up shit even worse. I think you can’t just say what about it besides the characters being kids. It’s exactly that. They are kids. And some scenes just even if you make a show that wants to just destroy someone that watches it, and intends to disgust and all this, some things just don’t need to be there, especially with kids. Edit (to clarify): The show and story with the kids would have been just as creepy and messed up without some of these scenes.

It’s rating is 15+ in South Korea, and was even aired on television weekly so it’s appropriate for kids to watch. Also the word “provocative “ was auto translated during a live where he talked in full Korean. It doesn’t have the same meaning as it does in English, it’s meaning is more along the lines of “shocking/crazy”. What's crazy is a lot of ppl grew up with their favorite series and continue liking their childhood favorites but uhhh anime characters don't age. So imagine as a middle schooler you had a crush on like a high school aged dude, that's fine because it's a crush. But then it's been several years and now you're an adult...."you're not allowed to like them anymore!" That literally doesn't make sense. Minors who are calling out adults for this just are too young to understand that'll happen to them too. And that's how they get shocked when they turn 20 and someone uses the same argument against them. Like....dude they're anime characters who can't get hurt. Majority of ppl who like anime characters aren't gonna chase a minor. It's just majority of mainstream mangas and animes main characters are still in school. (Ppl who obviously....like minors are different but you can tell if they're a weirdo or not) Example: I literally thought Denki from CSM was gonna be revealed to be like 19+ like he went through a whole childhood with no education because that is tragic af and make him desiring to touch a boob, get a girlfriend, etc even sadder. But then they were like he's 16 and I was like.....oh. Still sad but 2% less tragic in my head.

It's been a couple of years since I last had any involvement with the kpop community, so I think I'm fine with being referred to as an ex-kpop fan. I want to share my perspective on things. First of all, the kpop community definitely appeals to two target audiences: teenagers/young adults and lonely people. This is a fact, no matter how much kpop stans might deny it. The community attracts you because you want a place to belong, to connect with someone and they're amazing at it. That's why they can get their favorite artists on the top of the charts within a couple of hours of a song release, and it's the same reason many of them can destroy an artists reputation/career within a day over an unimportant situation like this. It's simply the hive-mind behavior. I'm happy to have left the community because only now do I see how obsessive online interactions fans have with their idols are - which, back when i used to be a part of the community, seemed valid and absolutely within the realms of expectations and saw nothing wrong with it. If someone wishes to debate me on this in the comments, feel free to do so but this is my perspective and my experience. I'm not erasing all the good work the kpop community has done over the years, but people in this community should ask themselves why the rest of the world percieves them to be obsessive, and frankly, fears the community.

Unfortunately, I've seen these brain dead kinds of views and takes a lot more recently (probably more often because I'm in furry spaces, and right now there's this war going on within furries about a very similar argument that's been going on for years). It's funny cause the same people will yell against these conservative or sheltered people, but then turn and say the exact same stuff under a "woke" or "rebellious" agenda without realizing how hypocritical they're being. It's disappointing seeing this kinda mindset seep its way into other communities, but it gives me hope seeing people like Joey speak out about this incredibly stupid idea that everything should be sanitized.

I thought there were being sarcastic like hey if you think watching MIA means you support p*do just because it features little kids in dark/gore situations then that means you support murder because you enjoy watching true crime shows/podcast. It just shows how ridiculous the claim is.

just a reminder, that article has a lot of mistranslation. woozi NEVER recommended made in abyss and he listed it as something he watched during A WORLD TOUR. what makes it worse is that this live happened a year ago. and additionally, korea's censorship of media pretty much removed all the weirder scenes in the anime since they are strict with content.

@@HopeeInkit depends cause where'd you get that info? (Genuine question). For example, in China some games aren't available for them due to censorship (unrelevant to anime but what I know), so they make games available for all audiences. Such as idv (what I play) is like the "safe" game version of dead by daylight (which is goresome). So yes, in some countries, censorship does exist unless you play or watch it in a specific website to expose you to the whole thing.

thank you very much for making this. i was in the anime community first before the kpop community and even though it's been years since i've been in the anime sphere you just know things and this is one of them. my fellow kpop people take everything out of context and its so annoying. i watched this all blow up in real time on twitter and it was just so confusing watching people egg each other on and pile on this massive wave of hate and digust. i am tired of it especially since it always results in nothing like where did it get us? someone is gonna bring it up five months from now to justify them not liking an idol? okay cool no one cares if you dont support that idol anymore he has tons of other fans go away. it's so annoying when one group of people act this way towards other groups that they do not understand kpop people need to stay away from anime for real this is why i can't be in both i'd explode

As a kpop stan myself, I feel embarrassed. You know it’s ridiculous if the situation reaches the RU-vid commentary side. But while I would like to defend the guys more, their stans tried dragging my favorite group, who has nothing to do with this, into this situation. Nobody’s safe when it comes to kpop stans.

It kills me how kpop idols are still being treated like babies. Of course Soobin understands the provocative and "controversial" parts of Made in Abyss, he even says he DOESN'T recommend it. Idk what more fans want. 💀

What's even crazier is that Made In Abyss in Korea is censored to the point where it has 15+ rating and was even BROADCASTED on National Television. And regardless of the censorship do these people believe a country is gonna be airing "pedOphilic" content on national tv for everyone and their kids to see?? Idk but some people really gotta watch what they say instead of throwing out serious allegations against people that ruin their image and going as far as sending dts, creating inappropriate AI images of idols, and just spreading misinformation,, like it's honestly really scary how some of these ppl feel entitled to other people's lives and very concerning.

I’m a Kpop fan. I’m an anime fan. I’m a TXT fan. They are Kpop artists and are also adults (all Idols mentioned in article are over the age of 18). They are allowed to have tastes that are different than your own. I also find this ridiculous. Thanks for covering this. It needs to be said.

As a seasoned kpop stan and anime/manga enjoyer, the whole controversy is so stupid. The more kpop or even anime is exposed to the global audiences the more it'll attract the most ignorant psychotic people. No one will deny that the anime has some uncomfortable moments but its not the whole point of the story, and I've only seen the supposedly more graphic manga. They act like the media doesn't regularly sexualize minorities where the plot actually DOES revolve around sexualizing minorities.

But oh boy did that smile fade in an instant. Like seeing that one thread being spread around making Made in Abyss look like some sort of kiddy gore fetish porn made me wanna pull my hair out.

I know it's been a while since this happened but its been so long since i watched joey and i was surprised to see he made a video on this. I've been an anime fan since i was 7yo, anime was a huge part of my life growing up and still is, i became a kpop fan, specifically txt, in late 2020. Now as someone who was initially an anime fan, i was so happy that my idol loved anime, it felt like my two worlds where colliding whenever anime was mentioned by an idol, i remember being so happy when soobin mentioned mia last year, being one of my favorite animes. I was 13, listening to an anime opening compilation on youtube and Deep in abyss came up, i loved the song and immediately started watching the anime. Which is why this whole Cancelling thing was crazy to me. Many kpop&anime fans myself included saw nothing wrong with this "drama" (obviously), but what's crazy is the amount Of insane stans on twitter. If you don't know, most of them hate JUST to hate, they're fans of other groups, that jump at every opportunity to make other idols look bad and blow things out of proportion, to sum it up, they're jobless and chronically online, and it's sad, because this kind of thing makes the idol lose trust in his sh*tty fanbase. I might've missed something, but i haven't seen soobin talk about any anime ever since this happened.

Soobin was the most loved idol across the kpop community and now due to this huge spread of misinformation his reputation will forever now be tainted. It’s makes me so upset for him because he is genuinely the most real and sweet idol to everyone but especially his fans. Soobin is even known in the kpop community along with Seventeen Woozi for both being huge anime fans. This was all a planned attack by trolls in Korea in order to take down very popular idols in their groups. Knetz even realize this is a slander attack because it happens all the time there.

Exactly. Honestly people pretending that this was anything else but your run of the mill manufactured controversy that happens on a regular basis is insane and also just addicted to outrage porn. This whole thing was started by trolls and no kpop fan anywhere from what I've seen has thought of this as anything less than stupid. Just an excuse for people to scream cancel culture and kpop stans are crazy etc. etc. when we're just chilling and tryna enjoy our interests. If no one gave the trolls any attention then this wouldn't be anywhere near the "controversy" that people are pretending that it is.

As a kpop stan myself I can confirm that the majority of kpop stans have the habit of jumping into conclusions and throwing around serious accusations way too casually as a big gotcha moment without ever doing their own research or knowing anything about the topic, it's embarrassing. There were few of us trying to talk sense into these people but it was so wild and frustrating how they'd made up their mind and wouldn't listen to reason. Sometimes the worst enemy of the kpop idols are their own fans.

Okay this video is three days old now but I'm in the kpop community and at first when I saw this I knew of the anime because my partner had been talking about it, and my stance was like 'well, it all depends on how the stuff is portrayed', in the sense of 'is it just there to be shocking or is it actually needed for the story. I was really excited for this video when I saw it pop up and it didn't disappoint! Thanks for explaining the anime and yes, this whole controversy is really stupid. As you said, most of them did the kind thing to actually put a disclaimer, which is awesome, and I wish I had gotten disclaimers to other media from when I was young that scar me until this day LOL. Great vid!
