Apparently they basically just gave Kevin pictures and said, "make music to this". He was pretty much told to do his own thing as they trusted and respected what he could bring as an artist and as himself.

Re-watching this video, I'm increasingly of the view that the Abyss is some kind of civilisation-devouring pitcher plant. There's a 2000 year cycle and Bondrewd understands this and wants civilisation to survive the cyclical apocalypse. He wants to be the Lord of the Dawn - the sunrise after the dark night of the Abyss' feeding. The praying skeletons are the survivors of the last civilisation it ate. And every 2000 years it adds a layer. Orth is next. Truly, this is cosmic horror done right.

Y'know, I generally avoid "theory" stuff with series like this, because I don't think they tend to add much and often feel a bit self-indulgent, but this one? I like this one. It doesn't overexplain what's going on, it's in keeping with the story's themes and tone, and it goes off of what's in the text without being unimaginative or overly literal. I respect that.

Have you ever been on a high ledge, like a building or cliff, and had that one horrifying thought: "what if i jumped?" At first, i thought i needed help, but it turns out it's not too uncommon. The term used to describe this phenomenon is "call of the void", and I couldn't think of a more accurate way to describe it. It feels like death itself is calling to me, and i have to resist that temptation, because i know what awaits me at the bottom. That is what i imagine the abyss to be for those who are near it. A death trap so obvious that no one would dare enter, right? But they do. Time and time again, and they die. They always do. But they likely only die with one regret: "i wish i could've seen what was at the bottom." Even on death's door, they want to go further down into the very pit that killed them in the first place.

I had that A LOT as a child and to this day I sometimes feel it. Once I went diving in the ocean and got hypnotized. If I didn't have someone with me I think I would have just stayed there, looking at the void, until my air ran out... Ps: i became a scientist, so curiosity might be related.

I don't think that urge is neccesarily a dark urge at all but more curiosity. After all, at some point, our ancestors were in positions to do things that seemed to be certain death or cause certain illness and survived because of it. That urge to explore was selected for, so even if we know something would be death now, we are still curious. Somewhere in our wiring we're genetically predisposed to ask, "what if?"

I think that what the Abyss eats is not the bodies of the raiders, but their "souls." It's not a "living" creature, in the conventional sense. It's simply anchored to a physical place, and it perhaps is expressed partly in the forcefield. The physical pit itself is just part of the bait mechanism, the antlion's hole or pitcher plant's funnel that allows prey to slide downwards towards the place that eats them, drawing them deeper while making return increasingly impossible. But it's not just that. It's more than just a predator, it's a gardener. On the large scale, it fosters civilizations around its mouth, to birth the individuals who will enter its body, and then every 2,000 years it undergoes an upheaval and swallows them entirely. On the individual level, it cultivates the strong-willed, empowers them, has them make bonds and connections that allow them to make their way deeper than others, and then when they are fully ripened with personal strength, human connection, love, and the admiration of others, it harvests all that it has grown. The Abyss doesn't care that Lyza and Ozen's bonds allowed the two to carry the baby Riko out of the pit alive. It's patient. It knows that all three will come down to its doorstep in due time, because what's a decade or so to something that's quite possibly as old as human civilization itself?

There is always only one answer for why people explore. Why humans, out of all creatures, are driven to seek out the most dangerous and wild places in the world, and to put themselves in peril just to see what happens when they take one more step. Why the unknown reaches of space, the depths of the ocean, or the place just beyond the horizon are so alluring that even those who can't physically go there want to know what exists in that place. The reason is: because it's there.

I would argue that we do crazy adventure shit not only just because we can, but because living an existence without knowing what it means is more terrifying than a horrible death. We searched the frontiers of the world trying to find ourselves in them, and when we took over the land we began looking to the stars. Where do we come from? What's out there? And most importantly...why? The pain of not knowing *why* is so much worse than the pain of death. The Abyss is just a physical manifestation of how that crazed search for meaning can *literally* torture you, turn you into a monster, drive you mad, and finally eat you alive.

The abyss basically put the ideal in people mind from a young age to come in there and explore. It's basically found a way to feed itself, because a lot of people do not choose to leave the island because they feel like it's their home but in actuality the abyss put in their mind it made them think that, cuz a lot of people had the opportunity to leave the island but chose not to,that's the danger of the abyss you think you want to be there but actually you don't it's all in your head, the abyss is not evil or good it's simply exist with good and evil all inside of it,

I’m so conflicted about this show. On one hand, everything you said in the video is so damn true, the entire concept and execution of the story and setting is just masterful. I literally think about it every day. On the other hand, the creators obvious loli fetish and borderline weird, uncomfortable fascination with several moments of ‘comedic’ kid diddling, Riko peeing herself and Reg’s genitals...makes it very hard to recommend to other people.

I just had a thought. This is probably going to include spoilers for people who have only watched We know that it seems like the abyss is getting close to making another layer again, since it seems like it follows some pattern. It appears somewhere in the world, people explore it, bringing relics up, and then it drags everything on the lip down into it, forming a layer. This seems to happen around every 2000 years, likely around the point where the birthday disease starts. What if the cause is not necessarily the time, but the relics that have been brought out of the abyss. The relics from deeper in the abyss are usually more powerful than the ones from the very top. Likely in large part from the strength of the curse. Maybe bringing these relics up and out of the abyss brings part of the abyss with it, and once enough of the abyss's power is brought outside it can pull the entire area inside of it.
@Lilithlun

This theory is both intriguing and terrifying
@Achonas
@Achonas 3 года назад
@@Lilithlun Thanks. it's a lot of what ifs essentially, but I think it fits. The abyss is basically a giant pitcher plant that lures people in, and the deeper you go the harder it is to get back out. and how better to lure people than mystery, money, and power
@terra20209
@terra20209 3 года назад
Considering how nanachi described the abyss and the curse this seems probable, and later on in the manga we learn a lot more some of the lower residents came to be. The relics that are brought up may still have the power of the abyss with them, and the power of the abyss will surely affect people. One of the effects may be the sickness thats kills young children, we see one of the kids taken outside of the island and he got instantlu better, as if the abyss couldnt efect him no more.
@astronauteer1215
@astronauteer1215 2 года назад
What if there's someone with space tecgnology/high technology who can just send robots to do the exploration in the abyss? To add this in your theory, it's immpossible to explore the abyss even if you have spacer technology since you'll just die because of the relics your taking from the abyss. And controling robots can be a pain in the ass if the abyss blocks out radio signals to control the robots and just use cords instead which is a very hard option that can waste loads of resources since the abyss is very deep and some creatures can just cut the cords off or even destroy the robots.
@thealbianempire9684
@thealbianempire9684 2 года назад
I know I'm over a year late to the conversation but to add on to this. We know that the relics also have wish or desire fulfilling abilities to them and get stronger the deeper they come from. So what if when people inevitably pull stronger relics up to a place where the majority of people wish to go deeper into the abyss that's what causes the abyss to form new layers.

The abyss is horrifying, I have no idea how anyone can realistically believe that they would want to go in there if they were actually given a chance. It's only adventurous and exciting because of the socialization in that world and because of Riko's sense of wonder. If this story was told from the perspective of another character it would be totally different. The fact that we are able to see it through Riko's eyes to understand the wonder, and through Reg's eyes to understand the terror of being in the abyss is an amazing combination that makes the abyss come to life. There are many ways that stories have tried to execute on exploration into certain death as a core element of their story. Take Attack on Titan for example. But the execution itself is what makes Made in Abyss so special.

I could see piles of red, here and there, like it was parts of the walls, of the floor. I couldn't touch them but I knew that there were people in there. Sleeping. Waiting to become part of the Abyss. Amd I could hear, no, feel its... heartbeat? If you can call feeling of being inside something alive, of something existing as a whole living organism, of something living for what looks like eternity for a human, just a simple heartbeat. It was alive, it was something very different from anything living on this earth, yet somehow it was alive. And all I wanted to do is to sit there and feel its live. Even if it means to become part of it myself. So yeah, after that I don't listen to OST for falling asleep faster, nope, thank you.

The thing is that imo manga doesn't do that good job at representing how truly insane the Abyss is and manga actually does it better by showing Riko's and Reg's struggles and training a bit more. If the manga didn't carefully explain its creatures and I just had to rely on what I see through Rico's and Reg's eyes, I would have the impression that they got as deep as they did quite easily with just one extremely unlucky accident. But then again it would also make sense that the upper layers of Abyss actually are way less dangerous than they were 1900 years ago since there has probably been quite a lot of culling and mapping done in those 1900 years. Even the border between 5th and 6th layer is safely fortified for humans. And maybe just passing through is actually relatively easy since the real danger comes from having to survive there for a long periods of time and getting out. Maybe there's even supernatural element in that. Maybe Abyss let's those on their last journey through with relatively easy testing since there's no worry of them ever getting out and spilling the beans. Maybe in the past plenty of young kids actually got into 4th or 5th layers and the red whistle rule had to be put in place because it's only then when the problems started arising because their bodies couldn't handle ascent

For as willing as he may be to cut ties with his own humanity to gain power or insight or novel experiences, Bondrewd is fundamentally terrified of losing control, and giving in completely to the call of the Abyss would mean relinquishing a level of control which he cannot abide. I suspect that Reg is some attempt (a successful one imo) by either the original inhabitants of the abyss, or someone familiar with their knowledge, to create the ideal abyss traversing humanoid. Reg is essentially the perfect android; the thing that creepy futurist villains always strive for. His synthetic body perfectly replicates the functionality of a real organic organism, and perfectly replicated human thought and emotions, but does not seem to _need_ food, water, or oxygen to function. He is also stronger, faster, and more durable than regular humans and has grappling arms. And of course, most importantly, he’s immune to the effects of the abyss. He has basically all the advantages of being human without any of the disadvantages. It’s possible he might even have the brain of an actual child inside him (which would make him a cyborg) which could explain why he doesn’t even see himself as a robot. My only question/concern is why design an android with fully functioning “anatomy” if he doesn’t seem to have a way to actually grow. Is his consciousness supposed to be transferred to older bodies as he ages, or is there some kind of mechanisms for him to actually age physically somewhere deeper in the abyss? How would an android even reproduce, especially if they are perpetually a child? I am curious and a bit worried to find out the true nature and origin of Reg.

the manga doesn’t make you feel dirty at all, personally it my opinion the nudity and putting children (12 year olds, which is completely normal to be exposed to sexual situations) in “sexual situations” (although it doesn’t), just makes it more realistic. i’ve read the entire manga and still but the ongoing new volumes, and it does NOT make me feel dirty at all, please keep in mind what you’re saying since most of it isn’t true and just gives off a bad reputation to the series

it just sounds like you would be totally okay with them losing their arm, screaming, almost losing another ones arm, but including a bit of nudity makes it oh so terrible? doesn’t seem right with me. gore among children has been so normalized in the usa and other countries which just makes some nudity make it seem totally illegal and not okay

@xrelik these morons dont even remember that rikos "punishments" of being strung up happened in a fucking TORTURE ROOM THAT WAS CONVERTED TO A CHILDS BEDROOM. theres more to that scene than "Dur she was strung up naked ew pervy". i instantly started theorizing as what type of civilization does this and why it was so normalized. then u remember that alot of white whistles got to where they are by doing unpeakable things and ppl just turn a blind eye to it. theres something fundamentally wrong with MIAs ppl man. but nah author iz big pervz lol.

@@flamingmanure There are other ways to show these things happening. There's no reason for a full front shot of a naked child. An above shoulder shot would've done the trick but they had to enter the full child nudity area. it's gross, I felt gross seeing it. Not to mention the robot scene and Riko's bath scenes, there was no reason for those. It's just fetishizing/sexualizing children.

One thing that you didn't mention (and seeing as you are only reading the manga) is the fact that the more down this kids go, the more your realize, death is actually fuckin great and you are incredibly lucky if anything down there just kills you. Made in Abyss was the first piece of media to show me the true horror that is suffering eternally. The Abyss doesn't want to just kill you, it wants to morph you into something beyond humanity and even monstrosity, something that has suffered for so long it can not even comprehend what suffering is anymore. That's why I wonder.. what the hell is awaiting this kids at the bottom?

It's been a year since I watch the anime but right now I can remember exactly what felt like, because you have perfectly captured it in words. Not only that but you have rekindled in me the very compulsion that you describe so well. No sooner after I submit this comment, do I intend to go to Bookwalker and buy the manga even though I had intended to wait for the continued anime adaptation, because the the abyss calls to me.

It would be the creepiest if it turns out that the Abyss litterally swallows whole civilisations, landmarks and people. Imagine that- at first there was no Abyss, but then the place that now would be the bottomest bottom just was sucked into the ground, and another civilisation built their city around it, back when it just was a valley. Then the next and the next civilisation was swallowed. Which in cosmic sense means- the town that is above the Abyss now might become the next layer 1 of Abyss while current level 1 will become level 2 and a next civilization will build over it, intrigued by what killed their predecessors

I'm sure Tsukushi pulled a JK Rowling and spoiled the producers on the ending which would had motivated them to produce the anime as well as the movie. It would be foolish to go in to production blindly not exactly knowing where its all going to end up. But then again, the final season of Game of Thrones happened while that series in literature is on some kind of hiatus last I heard... so who's to say? :P

Gaming Chinchilla Game of thrones went full tilt off the script after season 4 I wanna say, I stopped before the end of it because I noticed events being changed up, the big bad of the show was a throwaway character in the books. Even if the producers did get the whole plot ahead of time, they announced the 2nd season years ago but all we got were the movies that afaik (since I havent seen them) only adapted the 1st season into feature films like madoka.

Even the map of the abyss is vary similar to the one that maps out hell in dante's inferno. Riko taking the role of dante, reg taking the role of virgil, and Lyza having a similar motivational role as beatrice. The abyss it self being the nine circles of hell.

To those who have watched the anime, there is also a Made in Abyss movie called "Made in Abyss: Dawn of the Deep Soul", which directly follows the events of the anime and covers the Bondrewd arc. Season 2 of the anime will presumably come after the movie, so you should watch before season 2 when it comes out. (There are also two other movies that recap the events of the anime). In regards to the movie, it is exceptional. The animation and soundtrack are amazing, on top of an absolute banger of a story arc, which tugs at your heart in all sorts of ways. Bondrewd, while morally questionable, is now one of my favorite characters in the Made in Abyss series. If you loved the Made in Abyss anime, you will love the movie.

I think the way this anime balances beauty and horror so perfectly is part of its power. Were it simply grimdark the lure of the abyss wouldn’t be sold to the audience, but making the setting so beautiful and intriguing means the audience and the characters are invested at once in the same goal. And sharing that goal with the characters, it becomes easier to comprehend why they would endure such horror in their quest.

For people who like world building i can recommend the Overlord light novell. The anime just feels like a Nazarick compilation quickly skipping through the story of the titular Overlord. As he slowly gets lost in paranoia which is hardly even communicated in the anime. As stated the anime feels more like a "life in Nazarick"-compilation without all the seriousness in the rest of the world or inside the heads of the inhabitants including the Lich who slowly becomes what his character is in fantasy lore. Immensely powerful but obsessed with the fear of losing everything including his "human vestiges". It's a similiar comedy to one punch man but with the inverted premise. Saitama thinks he has nothing and his power is 100% earned. Ainz thinks he is at the peak but with permanent impostor syndrome. (Seriously, like 50% of his thoughts boils down to: "The practice in front of the mirror has paid of", "what if they find out i have no clue what i am talking about?" and "thank god this body can't sweat or show facial expressions". The other 50% are: "What if other game mechanics disappeared? I need to counteract how much that would fuck me.")

The abyss, however fictional or not, exists in a profound way. It represents something that everyone longs for, that everyone craves above all else. Meaning It is in some sense a monument entirely dedicated to Meaning. It, to the people of Orth, is the answer to the question "What was I born to do? To accomplish? What was it all for?" Such monuments are an extremely valuable resource, one that the world outside Made in Abyss is in very short supply. That is why we love the show because some part of our subconscious mind empathically attach ourselves to the main cast of the show, and through them, we are able to witness a watered-down version of the Abyss. To witness that monument towards Meaning. Then once the show ends, and we lose that empathic connection with the monument, we suddenly realize that in our real lives, we don't have a monument to throw ourselves onto. And so, when the show ends, this "fictional" monument remains somewhat intact and we can't help ourselves but be drawn inward, down into the Abyss
