I am disabled and there is always a lot of discussion within the community regarding who should be allowed to play various roles. Personally I believe the best actor for the role should get the part. That is exactly why the job description is called "acting". It is when an individual plays a role of somebody that they really aren't. Hearing actors apologize for the roles they played in the past makes me laugh, too. It all seems like everyone wants to virtue signal, ensuring that they don't get canceled 😂😂😂😂

Hugh grant identified as a dwarf while doing this role. So no problem here.

The Oompa Loompas weren't human in the book. They were small beings of unknown origin. The dwarf community have no monopoly on playing that role.

Maybe it was Hughs personality that suited the role more than his looks, it's acting.

I saw the movie last night. I thought it was wonderful and Hugh Grant played the comedy very well. They would have needed to shrunk a dwarf as well to fit the film.

Dylan has Peter Dinklage to thank for that. Peter is against any other dwarf against any dwarf roles in Hollywood, and they're listening.

So there's two competing cultural forces at work: on one hand, actors with dwarfism not getting work is considered a problem. But on the other hand, dwarfs being typecasted to very short, silly characters is also considered offensive in our culture, and that was something people moaned about before actors with dwarfism started getting phased out of movies. Basically, contemporary liberal culture needs to pick one. You can't get upset about both.

I like Dylan. Even in the face of iniquity, he's always so rational and fair-minded. As for Hugh Grant not enjoying starring in films, I have to agree - I'm not keen on him doing that either.

I was just thinking to myself, what about the Lord of the Rings trilogy? That was kind of split down the middle for using actors to play Hobbits on screen that were normal height and other shots using smaller folk to make things fit correctly in other shots where you don't see their faces up close. Not every Dwarf will have very charismatic acting skills on screen but with the Lord of the Rings trilogy I think they did it right as they employed both normal sized and dwarf actors.

I just want to relax and enjoy the movie with her. If Hugh Grant “hated the role,” why did he do it then? I mean I don’t know his financial situation but his pocketbook isn’t hurting. I wish a dwarf actor could have been casted. John Rhys Davies is 6’1 and played the dwarf Gimli in Lord of the Rings and never seemed to complain about it. Richard Armitage played Thorin Oakenshield and is 6’2. Again not one complaint. Then again. It’s is Lord Of The Rings. Can’t complain about a movie that massive and successful or the series rather. Despite Hugh’s moaning I hope to enjoy the movie since the same people that produced Paddington and Harry Potter are behind this movie I am sure it will be lovely to watch. This is a fantasy movie I can’t believe this is even a debate, he played the role he can moan if he wants. In the avenger movie they made a small man a giant to make thors replacement. CGI is there to create amazing things to look at and I’ve never seen a dwarf that small.

Im astounded! I would rather see people of a short stature be able to play ANY role and NOT stereotyped and worse confined to roles such as the 7 dwarves and fantasy world roles. It seems a bit off to me.

There's more to being an actor than filling a woke quota, in this case that of a little person. Just because you are a little person does not make you qualified to act in a major production. It's strange to see Piers who is normally against this sort of identity politics go completely on the bandwagon. Hugh Grant gets roles because whether or not he's an asshole, he is a great and merited actor. Concepts like delivering a line or how you use facial/body language are pretty darn important. While I think him talking trash about a big role that he gladly accepted is pretty disgusting on his part, there is absolutely nothing strange with Hollywood employing top actors for top acting jobs. It's meritocratic and if you're not a good enough actor, being a little person is no reason why you should be first in line for token reasons, especially in the age of CGI.

Dwarf's have a specific physical condition. Which limits the roles available. I agree with the "actors are acting", yes, but there are a number of Dwarf actors today and rehearsals and picking the best actor is very possible. I think when people say, the best actor should be chosen, they are assuming that bigger named actors, who have had more roles under their belt would automatically win the roles. That's a bit hypocritical and an assumption. There have been many movies where Dwarf actors were cast and did excellent work. So why not give them more casting chances. It isn't like big named actors are starving to death because there aren't enough roles and opportunities for them. And why in the world did this become political?! If you ask me, if it wasn't for CGI, there would have been more roles that it simply makes sense to cast Dwarfs in roles of little people. So with CGI acting has fallen to the way side. It's all about technology now, not ability too often. To me, this simply makes sense to offer roles to able body people (acting is physically demanding) to the actors who have those attributes. We don't need to make this topic into some political woke vs antiwoke nonsense.

The CG looks horrendous and what sticks in my craw even more is Godzilla isn’t being shown in IMAX in my area because this movie is hogging the screen!

Well they really didn't play to Hugh's strengths. He should have played an "Ooh-ah-um-oom - oh gosh this is rather embarrassing - in lovepa loompa - with floppy hair and some church based ceremonies to go to. He says he doesn't like acting in films but I bet he loved A Very English Scandal and The Gentlemen. In both I thought we was brilliant and I recon he'd agree. He would probably have been more comfortable playing a real badass-loompa these days. (Mofo-loompa).

Could be wrong. But sometimes if companies wanna add will smiths voice behind an animated fish and pay millions for basic voice acting. The only community who should have roles ''reserved'' for them is the dwarf community. Because of the obviously different PHYSICAL attributes.
