I always love it when Q tells Picard to stop being naive. He's usually right, too. This scene is second only to his "bloody nose" speech when he saved them from the Borg.

1:58 Q always frightened me a bit here. That tiny smile, that deliberate pause. He and the Continuum can pass whatever judgment on Amanda that they wish, and for all his moral outrage, Picard can do nothing about it. And it's not as though Q doesn't have a valid point: such powerful beings *do* obviously require some sort of regulating authority... whether the Q themselves are best suited for that job is debatable, but then, no one else has stepped up.

I've always loved the respect Q shows Picard here. He speaks to him as an equal, even though they both know he's not. He is all-seeing, all-knowing, but he doesn't jump to the end of the conversation, he answers Picard's questions (sarcastically blowing them off in some cases, but he humors Picard in allowing them to be asked). He explains his position frankly, even though they both know Picard has no real standing here. He expects Picard to understand the reality of the situation ("don't be naive"), even though he could just flash out of there in an instant.

1:08 “If you say so. I wasn’t there.” I find it strange that the Q would’ve executed those two using something masquerading as a tornado. There had to have been unlimited means of executing them quietly. I mean… a tornado, in Kansas? I honestly would not be surprised if Q suggested the idea. It has that kind of dramatic flair and irony that he appreciates. Q is not wrong in thinking her as a potential threat. Real shame they never consider something so obvious like… sealing her powers or something.

The thing that gets overlooked here is that Q is in a bigger bind than Amanda. We know he's following orders from a conversation with the shadow earlier in the episode; I argue that he's more cowed after his stint with mortality knowing that the Continuum is losing patience with him. He's been hiding the ruthless truth from everyone by hoping to nudge Amanda into the foregone conclusion but it's taking longer than he expected and Picard is the only person he can be honest with since Picard is not the subject of his visit. I personally think that Q has never been honest with Amanda and keeps highlighting the indulgence-oriented aspects of Qness to entice her more easily. His lessons are deliberately leading her into making choices that demonstrate WHY she can't stay in the mortal plane. But I think Q is worried about Amanda's potential to "bridge" mortals and Q because we know he's uneasy about humanity's potential ascension and what it could mean. A Hybrid Q would be that link and he's probably desperate to avoid that reality. All kind of moot since the Continuum Civil War breaks out regardless only a few years later anyway, and Q tried to get Janeway to be the bridge instead. Amanda should have become a new intermittent regular in Trek afterwards, released from her bondage as strictly Continuum-only.

When Q says “And what if they were?” With that aggressive exhale. You can clearly see that Q is getting aggressive.

I really like this episode here. Q is absolutely right. With the powers Amanda has, she is incredibly dangerous and needs to be brought somewhere where she can be taught how to use and control those powers, and how the universe works. No one with proper sense would allow her to just try to live out a normal human life. Humans don’t have the ability to destroy a planet because they got a speeding ticket and paying it was 1 minute late so they got their license revoked.

So they could have simply made her full human in case she was a hybrid...

They were willing to let Riker be a Q, I wonder what changed.

This is one of the few scenes I recall where Picard and Q aren't yelling at each other, quite a good scene!

Picard is lit really interestingly here.

This episode does make Q and the Grey very confusing, I am trying to determine if that episode contradicts this one. It has been established that the Q have executed members of their own, no doubt making them mortal then executing them, but the Voyager episode suggested they never had reproduced - at least since achieving their omnipotence.

One thought from Q and Amanda could cease to exist , not much choice.

If she's truly a Q then she must return to the continuum where she belongs. But if she were some sort of a hybrid, neither human nor Q, then... [Q makes a motion that looks like she'd be extinguished] Picard: You would be so despicable? Q: Don't be naïve, you have no idea what it means to be Q. With unlimited power comes responsibility, do you think it is reasonable to allow omnipotent beings to roam free through the universe? Picard: Well, you do. What's your point?
