I Hiked HOURS to Fish this Mountain Lake... (CRAZY ending!) 😯

Can I catch a fish in the highest altitude lake in the country? We also film underwater trying to catch a glimpse of one of the rarest fish in the UK, along with the beautiful wild mountain brown trout. these kinds of videos are my favourite, a good bit of everything. I'm absolutely loving trout fishing at the moment, especially lure fishing for trout in places like this. It doesn't get much more remote, or much wilder than this. Ever since I started mountain fishing, this place has been on my hit list. But can I catch the highest fish in the UK?
As well as all that, I ended up making a pretty crazy decision at the end of the video that left me shaking... A big step for me that was quite terrifying at the time, and a very long, uncomfortable and slightly embarrassing hike home!
As always, thank you very much for watching. I really hope you enjoyed the video, and if you did, please consider dropping a like, leaving a comment below and importantly, subscribing to see more! I've got some very exciting plans coming soon including a load of content in the mountains ⛰️

I have fished the tarn in the video quite a number of times and have camped there on occasion as well. There’s not a lot of food in the tarns and the trout rely a lot on terrestrial flies getting blown onto the water and using small dark flies in size 14 and 16 tend to work better than spinning or bait fishing. In fact there is a saying of using any fly of your choice as long as it’s black and you won’t go far wrong, but if possible fish in a ripple or wave.

The creature: Could well be a leech, but the size is hard to guess - it looks a bit like a buzzer. Possibly a water beetle or dragonfly larvae. If I had to make a choice, I'd say it was a flatworm - Planarian. Nice video, and good on you for jumping in. Pheeew!

Hard to get a perspective on size but I am pretty sure that is what us fly fisherman call a buzzer - making its way to the surface to hatch. Great vlog, well done !
@adventurefishinguk
@adventurefishinguk 27 дней назад
Thank you! Yeah a few people are saying it’s a hatching chironomid, does ‘buzzer’ just reference the current state of its progression in the hatch?
@davidwilliams8178
@davidwilliams8178 27 дней назад
Yes that's right, I think it's basically a pupa at this point. Once it hits the surface and sits in the surface film to hatch its referred to as an emerger. So if you were looking at a fly fishing fly to imitate you would try a buzzer (or nymph like a Diawl Bach) or if the trout are sipping them off the surface then some sort of emerger buzzer pattern.

Great adventure, but where are the hiking sticks after your last trip? Enjoyed the underwater coverage, what a great idea, hope you can do more. Was the mystery fish a baby eel? I think there are some mountain tarns in ths Scottish highlands, but i suspect they only have trout
@adventurefishinguk
@adventurefishinguk 28 дней назад
I don’t think there are eels up there but it’s not impossible. I’d say more likely to be a large fly emerging! I’ve not got hiking sticks yet, I think it would be too much carrying them around all day!

A really great video as always. I`m really interested in these Skellies as I have never heard of them before and wonder if you could give a little bit of background info on them? i.e. are they unique to the lake district or can they be found in Scottish Lochs, are they related to Trout or Char or maybe they are a course fish? That creature you were asking about in your underwater footage looked like a freshwater leech or something of that ilk as I used to do a bit of diving in lakes and rivers in my younger days.

I fished Red Tarn for a two day trip (camping overnight) in 1986 and again in 1987. I caught 36 trout up to 12oz and one skelly on the float with maggots. The skelly was caught high in the water late on a still, warm evening. They smell of linseed oil! To be honest, you were silly to go up there fishing without a tent. If the weather closes in you need to be able to stay put.

The lake 'monster' at the end was a hatching chironomid, an insect larvae, Trout's favourite food, the larvae hatches from it's egg on the lake floor, rises up through the water to the surface, where it hatches out into a winged insect and flies away, Trout will eat them at every stage, and will even eat the 'shuck' (casing) that is left behind after the insect flies away! these are the reason for the Trout 'topping' on the water.

@@adventurefishinguk Not a dragonfly. Dragonfly nymphs usually either walk, or they will swim head first in a straight line. At this size they will have long and visible legs. It may have already been said in the comments, so apologies if it’s been duplicated. But having watched the video and saw the time running out for you. What would be awesome, and again I appreciate it’s hard with a 2 year old at home, but I was thinking it would be cool to have a camping video too, setting a tent up and some night fishing and early morning breakfast making on a camp stove :) 😊

Oh don’t worry Camping is something that’s very much on the cards for this year! Will definitely be up there in a tent overnight 👍 thanks for watching

I am so glad I found your channel. Love your content. And I like how you don't give up. Do you know who also doesn't give up, on you? He is someone who Loves you so much. Remember where you jumped into the water and you said something about "Living"? Well, we are never truly alive without "him". Please take just a couple of minutes to continue reading. It could possibly a the biggest, best decision you'll ever make, if you decide right. Our Blessed Hope, our Savior Jesus Christ. Do you know him? Do "you", ("whoever" is reading this), know Jesus? Even more, are you "Saved"? If Jesus were to return today, "now", would you be ready? Are you ready? That is the one question that you, and everyone, better know the answer to, because that is the most important decision you will ever make. Jesus is the "ONLY WAY TO SALVATION". There is no other way, "none". This "life" that you are living now, is a "limited" existence. The life after this is "ETERNAL", which brings us to another question: "Where do you want to spend eternity?" Well, you have only "two" choices: either "HEAVEN" or "HELL"! Not everyone will go to Heaven and likewise not everyone will go to Hell. It's your choice! It's always been your choice. Have you ever wondered why we all don't go to Heaven? Well, it's because of just one thing. But that "one" thing "separates" us all from God, and that one thing, is "SIN"! We are all born into sin, everyone is, and the Bible says that the wages (penalty) of sin is "Death". You see, because of our sins, when we all die, we are all "eternally separated" from God. But you know what? God Loves you so much that he made a way for you, for all of us. The Bible also teaches us that even though the penalty (wages) for our sins is death, we can gain SALVATION (a GIFT FROM GOD) through his only begotten son, Jesus Christ. God made a way! He sacrificed his only son, for "you"! That's how much he Loves you. ROMANS 6:23 kjv For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord. Here's the GOOD NEWS, (THE GOSPEL) Jesus took your sins and paid your sin debt in full. He took all your sins, past, present and future, to the Cross, shed his Blood and literally DIED for your sins, was buried and then God raised him from the dead three days later. Anyone who believes in the finished work of Jesus Christ will be Saved. That's THE GOSPEL (which means GOOD NEWS). 1 CORINTHIANS 15:1-4 kjv 15 Moreover, brethren, I declare unto you the gospel which I preached unto you, which also ye have received, and wherein ye stand; 2 By which also ye are saved, if ye keep in memory what I preached unto you, unless ye have believed in vain. 3 For I delivered unto you first of all that which I also received, how that Christ died for our sins according to the scriptures; 4 And that he was buried, and that he rose again the third day according to the scriptures. He paid the price so you don't have to. Jesus is the ONLY ONE who could. He is the ONLY WAY. JOHN 14:6 kjv 6 Jesus saith unto him, I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me. God gives you, all of us, this "GIFT", because he Loves you. How much does God Love you? Well, let me ask you this: "Could you sacrifice your only child?" That is exactly what our Heavenly Father did. He gave (sacrificed) his only begotten son, Jesus, for "you", for the "WHOLE WORLD"! JOHN 3:16-18 kjv 16 For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life. 17 For God sent not his Son into the world to condemn the world; but that the world through him might be saved. 18 He that believeth on him is not condemned: but he that believeth not is condemned already, because he hath not believed in the name of the only begotten Son of God. Please, don't let Gods "sacrifice" (for you) be in vain. Jesus "died" for you. Please "Live" (eternally) for him.

Thanks for watching! Maggots are just fly larvae, a very natural thing for trout to eat surely? Never heard that one before!

@@adventurefishinguk The late Reg Rhiginy told me many years ago that he never used maggot for bait when trotting for grayling in cold conditions for that same reason but gilt-tail worms were fine. I wonder if the same applies to trout in cold mountain tarns ?

Maggots don't kill trout. It's poor angling while using maggots that kill the fish.

Right, I have subscribed like you asked!! now I want you to take a look at a little loch up on the isle of mull. They call it crater loch and it is in the top of an long extinct volcano (or so I'm told). I have never seen anyone fishing it but its a beautiful lock and a old local chap told me that him and his dad used to go up there when he was a kid and caught some proper nice brownies. he said they were very nice fish. Its a bit of a treck but nothing too bad although betting to mull from where you are is a long trip (But get out your comfort zone). But well worth the effort as mull itself is beautiful with the many eagles and dear as well as other wildlife that you will see. It would make for a great video as there is a lot of interest in the isle of mull and very few people know about that lock. They film the show Balamory on mull and is a very popular little island. My family had a house there for 15years and I miss it very much.

Thanks for sticking around I appreciate it! I’d love to visit the Isle of Mull one day, the long car drive is difficult at the moment though with a 2 year old. Thanks for the suggestion though I’ll definitely try make it to that place!

@@antnewbon2673 The sea fishing from the rocks is amazing as well. Fishing heavy steal lures at distance, and getting hit by 4-5lb pollock!! There is a great point on the rocks the locals go and every time I went it was amazing. The fight that a 5lb pollock gives is pretty impressive.

Mull is one of Scotlands gems. the South of the Isle is fantastic. Kidnapped by Robert Louis Stevenson was set around those parts. I can't remember the beach we walked, but it had something to do with the inspiration of the book. wish I knew about this loch though.
