I always took the parts where Eliza asks "do you know what Angelica said?" as her trying to stick it to him. Eliza is not a vindictive person, but she IS human and in this scene, she wants him to hurt. I think she always knew that he held Angelica's opinion of him in sich high regard, and in these moments Eliza really wanted to say something to make him feel even a fraction of the betrayal she is feeling.

I love the controlled mad growls at the end. Over and over. Also, as a little sister to three older sisters… there is NO doubt to me why she would always go back to her sister. No doubt at all. Love it. ❤

I think Eliza references Angelica so frequently because they were sisters and best friends. We also know that Angelica and Alexander were very close friends, and she knew him well. Of course Eliza would turn to her for everything. We women really like our besties/confidantes. 😊 Pippa is so perfect in this performance ❤ Also love revisiting Hamilton! Never get tired of it!

I absolutely love her vibrato. In the first half of the song, she holds it back on the longer notes and just lets it peek in at the end. It feels very deliberate, like it's symbolic of how she's barely holding herself together after this news.

The opening for me is reminiscent of "Once Upon A December" from "Anastasia" with its hauntingly sad and beautiful tune. In some ways it's ominous and melancholic and tears at the soul...adding Phillipa Soo's voice to it just crushes my heart, but it's precisely why I love listening to it.

I think the line that gets me the most is “ I’m erasing myself from the narrative “ . I did a little fist punch in the last song when she said she was putting herself back in the narrative. I think considering the letters that remain between Hamilton and Angelica there was an incredibly strong bond between Hamilton (some even believe there was sexual tension between them which the musical alludes to) while Eliza felt she could trust her sister not to allow it to go further, I think she struggles with the fact that Angelica was academically more suited to Alexander, and again the Musical covers the fact that Alexander writes to discuss the political issues with Angelica, whereas he isn’t seen discussing with Eliza, just saying he has to work. When referring to Angelica she almost tries to be vindicating her emotions by saying Angelica supports her in condemning him. Also hence the line “ I’m burning the letters which might have redeemed you” to show he has “torn it all apart” himself. Hamilton just has so much underlying references. I watched it about 25 times now, listened to the soundtrack more times than I can count, and watched videos covering little thing that watchers may miss like the same cast member acting almost like death with each character. Yet each time I take away something new from it, which pushes me to research more on the truth. So many of the songs contain lines from letters, and political documents done by Hamilton. Lins research and writing is just incredible Phillipa Soo, Renee Elise Goldsberry and Christopher Jackson were just standout performers to me, not just the complex lyrical and musical delivery (all the cast did that) but their emotional delivery. They seem to embody the characters as well, which is what I love about musical theatre 🎭, it just draws you in so you forget time, surroundings etc. your only focus is them and the story they have become.

Yes to the "numbness"! There's this odd juxtaposition between the overwhelming flood of emotions conveyed in her obvious disengagement. The performance is breathtaking, combined with the talent of Mr. Miranda in his lyrics, the pain of betrayal was completely captured. "I'm re-reading the letters you wrote me, I'm searching and scanning for answers in every line"... she manages to convey disbelief that this has happened and a touch of self blame in that she must have missed something. I agree about the moment when she goes from focusing on how this always about Hamilton (You, you, you) to realizing she has some power, it's lacking that "Ah Ha" moment of self discovery. There are still some of Hamilton's letters to Eliza (I believe in the library of Congress), one that is interesting is from 1780 where he writes that "You are certainly a little sorceress and have bewitched me, for you have made me disrelish every thing that used to please me, and have rendered me as restless and unsatisfied with all about me, as if I was the inhabitant of another world". Definitely harkens to her original statement that "your words flooded my senses". As a side, there was a mashup of Burn and Olivia Rodriguo's Traitor that is absolutely amazing. I believe it was a TikTok challenge but if you haven't heard this here's the link ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-nhfQv72TjFo.html.

In regards to why she references Angelica so much I always saw it as the fact that Angelica is the older sister and Eliza values her opinion a lot. Because for me, being Brazilian, here we value family a lot and I always saw Eliza mentioning her big sister as it being her showing that she cared what her sister had to say because they were the closest.

There were letters from Angelica, I believe when she was in London, that were to Hamilton and Eliza (her family and Hamilton called her Betsey), like 2-3 pages to Hamilton, 1/2-1 page to Eliza. And then letters to Eliza alone. So there was definitely sisterly advice given. And Angelica's archives are more nearly in tact, letters to Jefferson, Lafayette and others.
@lostindallas62

I think she KNOWS how much Hamilton VALUED Angelica OPINION and CARED what she thought of him! He seem to seek out for advice (Go To Jefferson and Compromise in Her Letter) Angelica told his azz that HE WILL NEVAH BE SATISFIED and when she return she told him straight up...I'm Here For Eliza! She referenced her Sister(Angelica) Alot out of pure Love and OF Course The Pain/Shame His Selfish Azz Caused...Angelica KNOWS you ain't ISH Too!!!

Thank you, thank you, THANK YOU for revisiting Hamilton, it's been the perfect way to end my week. As far as Angelica's presence in the song, it always struck me as a combination of Angelica's lingering feelings for Hamilton combined with being the "stronger" older sister. As a few members pointed out, factually, Angelica was married at this time, so there was some artistic liberty taken with the Angelica/Hamilton relationship... but I see it as perhaps a bit of envy.

I think her constant referencing of Angelica is mostly to do with angellica looking out for her younger sister. In the cut song congratulations she says, “I love my sister more than anything in this life I will choose her happiness over mine every time.” So I can see angellica constantly checking on eliza, and when Alexander published the pamflet. Angellica was probably the first person by her side

Hearing each and every crack and fry in her voice as a woman that has been betrayed by a man she came to love...my god. The emotionally charged ride she taoes us on, from her initial infatuation and blind following of him to reading each letter all over again looking for the clues she missed the first time. It just shows how much we can overlook when in love and then the clarity of when we have it come crashing down around us. The inflecton in her voice each and every time she said "do you know what Angelica said" just shows that now she's allowing herself to clearly the signs around her that this isn't the first time his eye has wandered, simply the first time she's allowed herself to see it. "Erasing myself from the narrative" doesn't seem to be from a place of being vindictive or malicious. Simply walking away. "You've made your bed of your own ambition...now lie in it." I love this.

While the piercing gaze is effective at the end, I think that her closing her eyes when she does is Eliza's way of letting go of the anger that she was allowing herself to feel at that moment and just letting it not fester. "Ok we had this monent but it won't linger and define me". The eyes closing was her reset. Her softening back to normal.

With the repeated mentions of Angelica, I can't help thinking about "First Burn" where there's a much more explicit reference to Eliza saying she KNOWS about Hamilton and Angelica, she says "I see how you look at my sister" and now with the fact that he's explicitly cheated on her with Maria Reynolds, if she'd been able to brush off those looks before because he'd chosen her in the end, well. Maybe now she can't. Angelica's on her mind because she's starting to wonder if maybe she'd always been second best, if he's done this to her because she wasn't Angelica, because she wishes she'd listened to Angelica in the beginning. Maybe she even realizes, to some extent, what Angelica did for her and it's all coming to a head here when the entire relationship really falls apart. The explicit reference to having seen the way Hamilton looks at Angelica obviously isn't in this version of the song, but I think it adds such an interesting dimension to these repeated mentions of what Angelica had said to her, what Angelica thinks about the whole thing, that Eliza kind-of knows that Angelica and Hamilton had something between them she wasn't a part of.

This is classic Marc Daniel Patrick; you at your best. First, yes…it’s a harp. I listened/watched the video. Then I listened again watching you which always enhances my experience. Then a third time listening to your commentary. I feel that Eliza’s blind world was Hamilton which proved to be emotionally devastating. Because her love was blind she failed to see what Angelica saw…the truth; a man who would risk anything for his own glory. A man who could jeopardize his definition of love Knowing that in all probability divorce would never be an option. He was flawed and Angelica was not fooled. I want to believe that the sisters were close enough that Angelica could support her sister while at the same time gently caution Eliza. After all, isn’t it what we do for those we love? Marc, I love that you force us to think and substantiate our interpretations. Phillipa was brilliant in her interpretation of Eliza. Not surprisingly, not a fan of the rasp in her voice on the repeated notes. They sounded like they were at the top of her range and that it was a bit of a strain. That said, thanks to you, I did finally watch HAMILTON twice when I ordered Disney+ at your recommendation. How else could I fulfill my assignments? Thank you! And again, I really would love/enjoy an entire segment of just you. I continue to remain hopeful and yet appreciative of all you do.

@ric7044
@ric7044 9 месяцев назад
There's a case to be made that seduction and entrapment are one and the same. What changes is the intention. That intention may change over time. I think Lin is alluding to that when he returns to paragraphs and sentences in the second part of this song, but now sentences are "senseless", and he presents the negative part of what Hamilton did. For Eliza, that original seduction became entrapment after his intention changed. "In my opinion" (tm) ;-)
@gcswift2
@gcswift2 9 месяцев назад
@@ric7044 In the context of the play and song, he built palaces during their courting. The time after that they'd met, but before they were married. His "Sentences became senseless" in the Reynolds pamphlet where he confessed to an extramarital affair. Wherein, he kept referring to his legacy and not wanting to tarnish it. Moreover, pron is the only place where Entrapment is seduction.

I feel she references Angelica because of her “big sister” role. I feel Angelica was her sisters teacher, protector, supporter, etc. We was introduced to the sisters in the “Work” song. In the “Satisfied” song, Angelica explains and points out that her nor Hamilton can be satisfied. That connection and similarly Hamilton and Angelica had was not a surprise to her (Angelica) especially after Hamilton shared his affairs with the public before going to his wife. And even though Angelica wish she had Hamilton she said and showed from the beginning that her sisters come first no matter what…

Man just reading my post I hope I explained myself. And also, I feel this song is tittle Burn because we are not suppose to know how and/or what Eliza said or felt about this particular situation. Eliza does not want the word to know how she felt. But obviously, it’s not good because she say Hamilton is going to sleep in his office rather than in their bed. Putting myself in this character’s shoes, in her world…Eliza is blindsided by this betrayal, her mind bouncing around thinking on what signs she missed that might have clued her in to her husband’s true character. Who better understood Hamilton’s character than Angelica? Who, other than a beloved sister, would have voiced these thoughts to a woman under new love’s spell? Of course Angelica’s comments will come to the forefront more than anyone else. But, as to the “why keep bringing it up?” Eliza is pissed. She wants Hamilton to hurt as she does. She has little ammunition, but knows he values Angelica’s good opinion. So she dips the dart in the venom of Angelica’s sour observations before slinging them in his direction.

11:35pm I think Angelica is a figure throughout as Eliza’s shadow from when Hamilton was “handed” to Eliza. Angelica was torn from the beginning it was obvious she was barely holding it together through Satisfied. Almost hysterical at times. Angelica warned Eliza maybe to somewhat dissuade her from choosing Hamilton and perhaps feel less conflicted if she then stepped to Hamilton. Angelica loved Eliza but also coveted Hamilton. So in some way, Angelica was outraged when he cheated but may also have been unexpectedly “Satisfied”.

Okay my theory on her referencing her sister was because Angelica is the oldest. Angelica in the song satisfied she says that she has to keep the status quo and refers to herself as the wittiest. My theory with that is because of that she had to keep this status but also really wanted Hamilton. I agree it’s very interesting and I’m sure in some ways Angelica manipulated the situations knowing her sister was so selfless and kind and took advantage of it in many different ways. Just my thoughts it’s what makes sense in my brain.

Angelica is her older sister. Are you an only child? Eliza may not have gone to Angelica... Angelica may have come to her. Angelica was Hamilton's confidant. Hamilton was also a little bit in love ,or maybe enamored is the better word, with Angelica. Hamilton took a lot of context for all this from letters between Angelica and Eliza and Angelica and Hamilton. Also, the IRL Angelica was already married by the time she met Hamilton... so them getting together wasn't an option. He did TONS of first person resource digging. He would even work on the songs in the Hamilton house in NYC. There's a whole documentary on all of this. Some folks who've spent their lives studying psychology have also used Hamilton as a practice subject for hypothesizing neurodivergence diagnoses based on patterns of behavior. The general conclusion is he was probably on the spectrum or had ADHD or both. It explains his brilliance, social awkwardness and inability to read social cues, his inability turn off his brain (writing and writing like you're running out of time) and hyperfocus/perseveration (passing on time with the family in the countryside to keep working), and his dopamine chasing (his affair). A lot of people who are neurodivergent get easily bored... and unfortunately, that includes with their partners... once the novelty has worn off, it becomes harder and harder to stay engaged. On the flip side, just as many people who are neurodivergent become obsessed with their partners and their partners become their whole world, to the detriment of their partners and themselves. Its super complex and if he was indeed neurodivergent... its not really fair to judge him through the neurotypical lens. The fact that Eliza forgave him and didn't just go live in the country with her family for the rest of her life and then dedicated her life to his memory after he died shows that he liked showed much social growth and learned lessons from his mistakes. A lot of people love to comment negatively about Hamilton... forgetting that there are real, living humans who in many ways identify with him... and if you struggle with your social or emotional iq.. it can be tough to rationalize that you are not the character and those negative remarks don't apply to you too. And my guess is she burned them in a fit of anger... out of a feeling that all those words were just words and never held meaning for him... but I'm guessing he showed her it wasn't true and he never strayed again.

I am number 6 of 10 and I have five sisters. I will tell you that while we lived under the same roof my sisters and I had a lot to do with each other's lives. While they were courting I would say that Liza probably leaned heavily on her sister's approval and took counsel from her.. and considering prior to meeting Liza Hamilton flirted shamelessly with Angelica, she knew what kind of man he was and maybe just hoped he would change for her sister. And then her comment about him simply flying too close to the Sun was awfully nice, I personally as a sister would have lost my mind and become horribly mean to my brother-in-law.. so maybe that was a sign that Angelica still kind of loved him especially since they continued a flirtation via letter, at least in the play. Also to consider Angelica was probably the matriarch of the house / family so it would make sense that her younger sister would go to her again for counsel and comfort. Personally I think that the biggest turn and my favorite part is when she recognizes that the letters involved him and only considered him and that kind of made her snap. "You....You. You. You." 😓🤔😱😡🤬 I chills every time I listen to this one. I've been with my husband for 21 years and if I lived my life and he lived his with no consideration to me and our children and all of a sudden I see in print that although he may have feelings for me he absolutely did not hold our family as a priority I would snap too. Low-key drunk opinion coming..... Eliza loves her sister for her open opinions (i.e. political or otherwise) where she can always count on Angelica to tell her the HARD truths (even if Angelica is trying to hide her true feelings for Hamilton). Eliza will ALWAYS take Angelica's word over everything, so what I believe is at the "you've married an Icarus, he's flown to close to the sun" is FINALLY Eliza realises that maybe Hamilton is kind of a cad (but she won't stop loving him, PERIODT, she knows her place!!) Long story short, Eliza keeps bringing up my Angelica because she realises she should have listened to Angelica more closely about Hamilton on the first place. "Burn" is not only Eliza's reaction to what Hamilton did, but an apology to Angelica for not listening to her, as well. Sorry, that's my take 🙂
