Hello, and thank you so much for watching this video! This is MONTHS in the making and days upon days of work have gone into this. I hope you enjoy it, find it interesting, and learn something new. I LOVED researching for and creating this video and cannot wait to film more videos like this in the future.

Most of the items shown in this video are genuine antiques (the tea set, tea cups, writing slope, croquet set and gloves) and so I cannot provide links to these; however, you should be able to find similar things if you hunt around on Etsy and eBay.

I'd be down for that. There's a historic farm in my state that does tours of the grounds and old home as well as various events through the year, they talk about Victorian era Christmas tradions in December on the weekends and dress up in 1870's style cloths. It happens late in the evening so guest get hot cocoa and there's live music and stuff.

That was super interesting to watch! As someone who still regularly attends and host tea parties because it’s part of my culture (I’m a Sephardic French jew! Tea parties are a shabbos afternoon activity) it was very interesting to compare how Victorians did it VS how we do it. I’ll probably borrow some of these Victorian recipes for next Saturday!
@cantcatchit
@cantcatchit 3 года назад
So when do you address the way that afternoon tea culture stemmed from the period's violent, racist, and imperialist culture of overseas domination and subjugation? And the fact that your weird fascination with replicating the victorian era is just imperialist nostalgia? Waiting for that part of this "educational" video....

Exactly! I commented about the same thing. At least one person in this comments section agrees with me!! Like I am so annoyed at her Victorian videos. Does she ever consider that so many of her viewers are people from former Victorian colonies whose ancestors were exploited. I am really upset that before making all these videos, she didn't think even once about the colonialism and exploitation that happened during this time!
@ari-in8ny
@ari-in8ny 3 года назад
usually in her victorian videos, she mentions how although there are nice parts, that its history is not as "aesthetically pleasing" as it appears and that it is okay to enjoy the time period, but also realize that there were problems. it seems she may have forgotten to add the disclaimer in this video, but in her other ones, it is there. it is okay to enjoy replicating victorian fashion or having tea parties. whats important, is understanding the problematic portions and learning from them so we can try to not repeat history. but you are more than entitled to not watch victorian recreation videos like ruby's and watch the more nitty gritty ones that are strictly fact, not about tea parties. there are a few great ones if you dig deep on youtube ! :)

Hi Ruby, a very informative video, you obviously put a lot of thought and effort into it! Might be worth mentioning (which I know you have in previous videos), that the cooking/cleaning/washing up likely wasn't done by the lady of the house but by a cook and maids, butler "downstairs", and that in many cases these poor souls lived a life of drudgery with very little, if any, time off and were often treated as little more than slaves sleeping in the attic and sharing a bed with other maids, very early starts and very late finishes. I think it's important not to over romanticise an age when working class people had very few rights, poor health and very little security with no NHS, social care or benefits to support them (hence the workhouses where thousands ended their days in misery and abject poverty). Have you thought of doing a day at the seaside with bathing machines and the ladies in their bathing dresses? That's always good for a giggle! You prob don't have access to an actual bathing machine, or the bathing dresses but there's a lot of video footage online. Or a day at the races, transport etc. You could do another on health, illnesses of the day, the remedies used, dental treatments, surgeries etc and the groundbreaking improvements in the treatment of the mentally ill. Fashion and hairstyles of the time? Recipes unique to the time that we don't see now? Just a few ideas. X❤X

Loved this video - thank you for letting us appreciate the fine art and adorable quaintness of Victorian Afternoon Tea with you! Fun fact: the concept of tea (or cha) actually originated in Ancient China, and was only brought to the UK during the mid-17th Century. It is both fascinating and rather amusing to think of how synonymous tea has become with English culture, since its roots are really not very English at all! Even so, it has become an absolute staple in our lives here in the UK, as well as in so many amazing cultures across the globe. I myself am an avid chai enthusiast, and would highly recommend that everyone should try authentically-brewed karak chai at least once in their lives!

I'm indian and my family and I drink tea together every afternoon! Sometimes we enjoy it with homemade goods. We always have a conversation while tea time, and hear my sister practicing her piano. Many others (at least bengalis because that's what I'm) spend their afternoons like this. It's not exactly the same as victorian tea time, but it's a time dedicated to rest, refresh and talk!

In Spain we still have siesta after lunch, specially during the hottest months of the year, and that mid afternoon snack, mainly because most people have dinner at around 21 or 22 pm. Although the siesta and snack depends of your daily life, if you have time to stop for a bit or not. But whenever people have time they do actually do those things. Also mid morning snack exists too, specially for students and adults at work. This depends again on how soon you have to wake up because our lunch is normally at around 14 pm, so the mid morning coffee/snack break would be at around 11 am. Yes, we do work and study as much as everyone else, we just do everything later than most people. In places like Italy this is a thing as well, it depends very much of your lifestyle but is part of our latin culture I guess.

In Sweden we have something called 'fika' which have around 2-3 PM and even in some workplaces you have it where you gather your co workers and have a chat/break while drinking usually coffee and eat something sweet. On birthdays this is the time when you have your cake and stuff. I can't go a day without having fika. I usually have a sandwich and some cookies. During the summer I usually go for ice cream.

@Retro Girl in a Modern World normally i would be in complete agreement, however i have noticed many people become worried that ruby could have a problem. for example, in a recent video it was noticed her search history included "how many calories in ketchup." this isnt coming from a place of judgement or meanness, but simply concern from an eating disorder surviver.

I don't eat meat unless it would otherwise go to waist. This philosophy of not wasting has made me horrified by people throwing away so much of the animals that they have killed to eat. My family once hit a deer and rather than waste, we ate her, using every piece. organ meat used to be more common before factory farming made it easier to be picky and throw away most of an animal. Be like Victorians if you're gonna eat meat: use every piece.

If you ever do a part two to this or anything else involving sugar and Victorian England pls do mention the role and toll that played in the enslavement of millions of Africans of various tribes. Thanks

I am very late with my comments/questions… I also wonder how the tea doesn't get too strong after some time with the loose tealeaves still swimming in the teapot...?

Such a lovely video! Great work! My personal favourite finger sandwich combination is cream cheese and cucumber on whole wheat bread. Pretty standard as well😄.

At our library we had Beatrice Potter historian seminar with girl scouts serving with their family favorite teapots The girls were so involved with saying their favorite memory of family gatherings with the family teapot . Also the girls wore white gloves while serving they were so adorable!!!

Tbf for poorer people since meat was so expensive, you might expect to find more vegetarian food. I guess she wasn't eating lower class food in this video though.
