It’s a good idea to note that MOST residential ceilings are not safe to rig from. Generally wood framed houses are not strong enough for the forces generated when doing aerial. The professional mentioned in the video is a structural engineer, which can be very expensive. The solution for most people is to buy a portable rig that is low enough to fit indoors.
Helpful comment :) Wood frames houses are a no-go but what kind are suitable for aerials rigging? I've seen quite a few people with rigging in their houses now but unsure what kind of materials are conducive to this kind of installation?
@@ebonygraveur8053 Honestly from what I have seen most people have no concept of the risks they are taking on. The people you are seeing are likely no exception. Always consult with an engineer before rigging from a ceiling. If you wouldn't hang a car from it, do not hang your inverted body from it. Steel and concrete may be suitable, same with the wooden construction in converted mills/lofts as the buildings were originally designed to support heavy equipment, but always always consult with an engineer, and know that you are better off just getting a free-standing rig where the forces are spread to the floor with four points of contact.
@@snachicat Yes, I get that. I wasn't born yesterday and understand structural engineers exist for a reason. Thanks anyway for the lecture. I didn't ask "what materials are theoretically possible" because I planned to go gung ho ahead but rather because, if my house material happens to fall in the categorically unsuitable basket, I'd rather not pay the thousands of dollars to have someone tell me that.
Thank you! The details of the mount installation was perfect. I just got a silk with the large one like you had first, it's not going to work on my regular ceiling. I should order some small ones to and turn it into a hammock ♥
Keep in mind tho my mount works for my solid concrete ceiling. You do want to get a pro to check it out for you to make sure it is safe! Also buying fabric is a rabbit hole. There is always another length another color I want to get.
@@aerialpractice lol, yes picking a color took a lot of thought. I got dark green because it reminded me of Tarzan. I have a pro to bolt a beam over my beams for extra support, but it's just too low. I'm going to some parks to look for that perfect branch for now, thanks for your reply ♥
Hello Ke Ying! It depends what your activities are. If I had a 3.25m height, I would look into 6-7 meters fabric for hammock practice. If you are interested for more detail, see this post: aerialpractice.com/buyaerialhammock/
I am converting my garage into my own aerial gym. Please advise when we drill the holes do they need to be drilled directly into a wooden joist or hollow ceiling please? so i can tell my builder
I would not do either! You must know that your points are optimal for holding dynamic aerial loads before drilling. if you aren't sure best to hire someone to design a solution that works for your garage. Hope it helps!
I really want to do this with my room because it looks really fun and I have been wanted to do this for a while but I don’t know if it’s safe. The set looks good but then there are also people in the comments saying it’s not safe and now I’m just confused. Also how did you find a professional to look over your celling? It looks easy to put everything together I just don’t really know where to find a professional. Thank you for helping me!!
The point is aerial setup should be evaluated case by case. Otherwise it could be very unsafe. I find it impossible to tell how safe or how unsafe just by looking at videos or pictures. There are a lot of things to check first before installing, and testing after to see whether it can hold. Ask around to see someone who can assist you!
I had a question about the ceiling mounts. How far apart do you put the mounts? But otherwise I have no other Questions and your instructions were very clear and This was a great video! @aerialpractice
I believe mine is 50 cm apart. I have to say this is how i did it in my old apartment where it is suitable for this type of set up. Not os much of instruction but hope to give you an idea of an option to rig. Hope it helps you to find what works for you.
Does the fabric have to stretch? I've been thinking about trying by there is so many small details no one seems to cover, I heard it's called silk but real silk doesn't stretch so I'm very confused on the safest fabric to use.
I understand the confusion. I had the feeling too but slowly learn from experience. I have 4 fabrics now (they are all called silks or fabric but since I used them more as hammocks so I call them hammocks more). They all have slightly different stretch but I generally stay with low stretch for the space I have and the way I use them. The only time I use a high-stretch fabric was for doing silk tricks in a very high ceiling studio, where I have space to bounce around in the air. In short, if you have limited space, i personally would choose low stretch as a safer choice.
Please share a link of the figure 8 you are looking at getting. I too am wanting to rig an aerial dance silk but would prefer to avoid carabiners for this. As always thank you for your amazing content. Xxxx
Uhhhh I think drilling holes big enough for the bolts to be hammered into is questionable right? My personal experience is that anything meant to screwed in should be screwed in otherwise it can just fall out if it can be hammered in. Just a question/concern. I realize you may have sought a professional for placement as to where the beams are to place the hangers but the method of putting the hangers in looks not sturdy. Did you have any issues with this setup? Did it slip out or all good?
My engineer shared with me its important to use the right bolt for the right material. This video talks about how expansion bolts work: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-AkI9FE14y-8.html
Never have any issue and I have similar setups for years. I do pay for equipment and constructional check up regularly. I also have plenty of different sets of equipment, this one is just the one I got in Europe.
@@aerialpractice thank you so much for replying! My issue is that it’s way too low because of my ceiling! I have to use the daisy chains instead of the mounts because of my set up, and Even though I have extra daisy chains it is still too low at the highest point! I have now re tied my hammock so hopefully this will work. Thank you!
@@zobaczysz1 Yes! If you check my story on Instagram today, you can see I am using a fabric that is very long. I end up having 2 really big ball of knot on top of my head, which might be annoying if your fabric is way too long, but can always give it a try first.
@@aerialpractice thanks, I just did it. Do you see much difference between those two sets in practice? Do those two types react different when used? I will show both to my constructing engineer when he pops in on Monday to finish the job. We picked the place and ceiling already, but I want to show him the installation set to let him decide
It's hard to describe it clearly in 1 comment, so let me share with you in this post: aerialpractice.com/articles/aerial-products/get-more-space-for-aerial-sling-in-low-ceilings/ There you can see in the photos 2 ways of adding a swivel into my set.
Hey! I will finally be able to install my aerial hammock inside (and not outside in a tree), how far apart do you reccomend placing the ceiling mounts?
Hi Eric, definitely do not install anything if you are not sure how it will work. Seek a professional advice to help you inspect and install. Its very important to be safe when practicing aerial
I don’t think the drywall itself will hold for long. Buy a stud finder and locate the joists in the ceiling and anchor to those. Then you can hang hundreds of pounds.
No. I only had to drill for the anchor bolts to be full fitted, then tighten the bolts as much as possible for maximum grip. Finding the best spots in your set up is as important as doing it right i would say.
Hello Bria, it is hard for anyone to tell you the exact answer of this question. A typical safe set up can hold up to 2000lb. It's less about how much you weigh but more about what equipment you use, how it is being setup, the structure of the ceiling. Hope this helps!
Important!!! Don't hammer on the naked thread of the bolts. Losen the nut first till it covers the thread ends. Then hammer on the nut. If you don't do this, you might damage the thread and your nut may be stuck.
Best to buy from a reputable vendor. You can't guarantee safety with material you may have without testing. I shared where I get my gear in my shop =) aerialpractice.com/shop/
I have seen garage set up before. It all really depends on what you have and how you will set it up. Get someone professional to help you! Safety is number 1!
@@booish5 I have 4 small figures 8 and a big one for silks now. You can find more info in the HOME set up playlists. I am also looking to try swivel that is directly attached to the rig to give me more height, will share more then!
Water Bottle thanks for watching and sharing your thoughts :) I got everything on bol.com searching for aerial hammock. It’s all in a set and this video shows you how I found the set and installed it
@waterbottle This setup isn't safe, I'd strongly recommend against copying. Instead it'd be worth looking at Safety In Aerial Arts page on Facebook. Your safety and life is more valuable than cheap or insufficient rigging xx
Yeah unfortunately the equipment shown in this video is not considered safe for aerial because of dynamic force. There are videos you can find of people talking out of their own ceiling because of rigging like this. My best recommendation would be to find a high quality portable rig rather than risk your own life and void your homeowners insurance, or risk the foundation of your home.
