I invented a tool to straighten mower decks after the blade has hit something causing damage.

Today, we are repairing a damaged lawn tractor deck after the blade hit a tree root, causing the spindle to bend its mount. My new tool makes this job easy to do. We also fix the bumper that was bent when they bought it. Huskava Lawn Tractor

Excellent video on deck. Appreciate your time. Hit a stump john deere, dealership wiuldnt attempt to fix and suggested deck replace at $1200. Will somehow pesuade back into shape. Knew inneed leverage of some sort. Didnt event think about ratchet strap. Again much appreciated

Good video sir. I am at 14:12 of your video where you are talking about the poor service that was done, ( or not done ) so sad some folks don't have any pride in the work. Just get it out of the door and get paid, DH.

Thanks. Clever. I bent my deck after 9 years of flawless operation. That’s why I was interested in your video. I think I might be able to use a piece of 6 foot long 2.25 in. Pipe slipped over the spindle shaft too…maybe do the same thing. Although without it being bolted to the mower…I’ll rely on how the blades align and trial and error.. And for sure it won’t be as good as your invention. Way cool! The spindle housing is a little bit over 2 inches…so that’s the reason for the 2.25 inch pipe size. I hope it works…because from what I’ve seen…only you and one other guy used technology to straighten your deck damage. Again, much appreciated.

It was way harder to straighten than I thought it would be. I had max tension on the ratchet strap.

STOP BEFORE YOU START BEATING ON YOUR DECK OR TRYING TO BEND IT BACK INTO SHAPE…THAT MAY NOT BE THE PROBLEM, EVEN IF IT LOOKS LIKE IT IS. As to my comment below. My blades looked just like issues that podcasters are saying were the result of a bent deck…and I too thought so. My blades weren’t meeting in the center, ONE HIGHER THAN THE OTHER, leaving a track of grass down the middle of my mower. Well, while the visual evidence looked like a bent deck, it actually turned out to be a broken bearing in one of my spindles. The spindle shaft wasn’t bent which would produce a wobble in the blade…the broken bearing caused the spindle shaft the move off center…resulting in what looked exactly like a bent deck. One blade was 1/2 inch higher than the other in the center and rotating it didn’t make that change…both ends of the same blade were always 1/2 inch higher than the it’s sister blade. Luckily my son, an excellent small engine mechanic, told me to replace the spindle first. AFTER INSTALLING A NEW $26 SPINDLE…MY DECK WAS PERFECT. NO BANGING OR BENDING REQUIRED. All in all…it was less than an hour fix…not to mention I didn’t have to take it to the shop and pay for that. Hope this helps.

Thanks for the comment. In my case I bolted my 3 ft tall bar to the spindle location after removing the spindle and you can see clearly that the deck is bent. A broken spindle should result in a noisy bearing and should have slop in it. Thanks for the comment. Glenn

Sounds like you have a very useful son. Would he be interested in a step grandfather?

Now the next time they mow they will probably hit the same root again. 🤣

Hey Glenn, can you make me that tool and what will you charge me for it?
@GlennsSpeedShop

That tool was nothing more than a stanchen or safety chain holder out of some mill that I found at Burchams Metals in Albany. Next time i am out there, I'll see if there is another sitting around...

Kinda unprofessional. Everyone knows you cover the snap on wrench with a rubber mat. That way you don't leave hammer tracks and keep the warranty. Those little mats you put on jar lids to twist them open should do.

That service center probably didn't even know that mower was there. Those blades are not new either unless the mower sat outside all winter.

They knew it was there, my Dad made many phone calls checking on it. They stored it in a car port at their Rental/Repair Shop in Newport Oregon, you know... on the Oregon Coast. You can see the ocean from their parking lot. The blades were knew, but bent. My dad was mowing when it hit a tree stump. Months later the Pastor hit one and I repaired it again, those blades were new too... only one bent, I replaced the pair and kept one for a spare. They did get all the stumps ground down and no more repairs have been required.

@@GlennsSpeedShop My original reply was meant to be condescending to the repair shop. If you say the blades were new then I believe you they just looked a little rough for new blades. I thought the shop sold them to you as new. Sorry that shop ignored your problem and charged you for work not performed. I do like the straightening tool.

O Just put it in press and been it back is what I do
@GlennsSpeedShop
@GlennsSpeedShop Год назад
This is an 11 gauge fabricated deck. It's one of the heaviest decks used today. There is no way that I can lift and hold it on my press and still operate the press... and live to tell the tale .. Believe it or not, the Church brought it back to me Saturday, they hit another stump and bent the other side of the deck and destroyed the blades. I will upload that video soon, and now, with a bit of practice, it took just a few minutes to fix. With my tool I can set a framing square on the deck and check it for square fast and easy. I don't think there is a better and easier way to do this, and I have now done two this way. Thanks for the comment. Glenn

The groundskeeper at the church might need some remedial training on staying away from stumps!

Why grease the spindles? The bearings are sealed bearings! Those grease fittings are worthless! Filling the spindle shaft does in no way grease the bearings in that spindle! Yeah..
@GlennsSpeedShop
@GlennsSpeedShop Год назад
I don't think they are as sealed as you think they are. I have had dozens of mowers with stuck spindles, I beat the blade with a big hammer until it frees up, spray PB Blaster at it until it spins easy then pump grease in it if it has zirks. The service manual says to grease it, so I grease it.
@AgentWest
@AgentWest 11 месяцев назад
"Sealed bearings" are only a problem if those are rubberized seals. If they are metal, then they are dust shields and they do not seal tightly like rubber ones do. If nothing else, that acts as a metering device for the grease. When grease gets hot it becomes more like thick oil, so those shields actually help to keep it in the bearing/spindle instead of it simply leaking out. The top bearing is still questionable, but a properly designed system would have the pressure relief/vent hole at the top instead of the side, so _everything_ gets filled with grease (including the top bearing) before any excess can ooze out. _Is_ there a batter way to lubricate bearings? Yes, an oil bath. It is as convenient and cheap as grease? Absolutely not, especially in this use case.

I pump grease until it goes threw bearings and comes out ends of spindles , grease will go past the covers , grease guns push out 10,000 psi , they are not seals ya can pick them out with your fingernail lol they are just loose fitting dust covers . , some people add a relief hole this does not allow fresh grease to pass threw bearing so what you are left with is the same contaminated grease around the bearings.. as bearings wear they create metal particles that will just sit there and act like sandpaper , you want to flush new grease threw them to purge the contaminated grease , a guy on you tube actually proved it using different colour greases , the grease will go through bearing with both covers on , grease will follow the path of least resistance so when cavity is full it has nowhere else to go but threw bearings and out ends of spindle as its designed to do . I would prefer to have new clean grease around bearings. , adding the vent hole guarantees no new grease will ever get to berrings after the initial fill
