This channel is what it is because of YOU! Thanks so much for sticking with me on this journey. I've been working on this winch line for years (8 years to be exact). And it has finally culminated into a product that I can be proud of. I cant tell you how many times I've needed to winch someone in a hurry, even in life threatening situations... but the accessories weren't there or buried away in a drawer somewhere. The Freedom Winch line solves all those issues with no accessories required and everything you need to winch stays right there in the winch itself!

I use a soft shackle on the end of my synthetic winch line as my "hook" so I like the basic concept. However, I thought the whole point of the tree saver was to save the tree since it's wider than the thin ropes and doesn't cut into the tree. I also don't think the synthetic line will last very long with abrasions from the tree and that's a costly replacement rather than just having the $15 tree saver take the abuse.

I’m convinced tree savers are for cable. If you are just tying off to a tree you’re not going to hurt it with a loop of rope and it’s a decent size. But for redirects you need a pulley.

I would say use a tree saver if you can, if its an emergency situation then do what you have to do. Also keep in mind it is doubled up on the first 8 feet so its not as thin and there is also a sheath that will be over it that wasnt in the video.

That is pretty nifty but sadly it doesn't replace a tree saver. Couple reasons. The tree saver is a flat strap for a reason. Its width spreads the pressure out that is against the bark thus protecting the cambia? layer. If that fragile part of the tree is damaged the tree will die. That layer is extremely fragile in spring on some trees. Even straps can still damage the fragile tissue just under the rough bark. The round rope is not only very small but it is round. The point of pressure against the tree will be very very high. Another problem will be rough tree bark causing excess wear on the rope. The rope itself is tough but the individual fibers are relatively fragile and fray pretty easy.

A tree saver is usually 3-4" for a reason. The rope going around the tree will cause excess wear on the winch rope and still cause damage to the tree! Maybe not as bad a steel cable, but it will damage it. My winch recovery kit lives under my passenger seat. I can reach it and had it out to someone without undoing my seat belt. I have other recovery kits stowed away, but the winch kit is nothing more than a 4" tree strap held together with a soft shackle and a winch blanket. 95% of the time thats all you need. I keep other soft shackles within reach of the drivers seat, just in case..

Keep in mind the final version will have a chafe guard on it as well and it doesn't slip like a rope around a tree back to itself with a hook... but for sure you can definitely still use a tree saver with this rope and I would suggest it in non-hurried winching situations.

The spot for hooking around a tree is cute for the small trees. In the Pacific Northwest we have large trees and not sure it would fit around the trees around here. Plus isn't the tree saver part being a wider strap around the tree so you are not damaging the tree by using something thin that can dig into the tree.
@elyodeel

He said there's tree loops for eight feet, might be close if you're trying to hook on a monster redwood but it should work for most trees. I'm wary of the knot though, in my experience putting a knot in a rope you're pulling with is iffy, but if he's figured out a way to do it without sacrificing strength then cool. I'm also wondering how hard it'd be to pull on it the wrong direction and pop that knot through the loop

I think there are a lot of people thinking this is the same a hooking around a tree with a standard winch line. This line does not sinch tighter around the tree as it is not a choker. It is uses the same knot system as a soft shackle which also do not sinch tight. This line would not get any tighter around a tree then it was when you wrapped it around the tree and applied the knot lock. With this system you would eliminate tree choking and rope abrasion(as long as you lined up the rope between the tree and the winch vehicle). In fact the only difference I see between this system and a tree saver is the width. Given that most people don't want to bother with the tree saver for whatever reason(PITA, lost, buried in the back somewhere) this is still a good option and a great idea. I am not saying this should eliminate tree savers in every case but it is way different then choking a tree with a standard winch line. Good Job Matt

I understand what your saying but the stress from the thin line on the side of the tree way from your winch will still cause permanent damage. If you winch on the tree one way today, and someone else a different direction tomorrow you could easily still kill the tree. Just use a tree saver.

I hate to be “that” guy, but several things occur to me. First, you’re pricing yourself out of the bulk of the potential market. When the line, which is a consumable, costs almost as much as the winch itself to basically eliminate the soft shackle and the joining gear, it’s a pretty easy decision. Secondly, I am dubious of being able to patent the splicing and knotting of the line. It may or may not be a completely new way of splicing the end of a line, but that’s all it is. This idea is a good one, and I do believe it will catch on, but everyone and their brother will figure out how to tie the button knot and back splice the loops. Not to mention the Chinese,,,,,,. I hope you do well, but I think you’re facing an uphill battle.

Now the only thing left to do is eliminate the need to Unspool the Winch line and you'll have the simplest setup around. Years ago the Landrovers had front-mounted Capstan winches with no rope or cable. You tie off to a tree, then run the rope around the hub and start pulling. The cool thing is that, since the rope isn't spooling on top of itself, the line is always at the highest torque position.

the whole point of a tree trunk protector is to save the tree from being ring-barked by the thin winch rope, while i think this winch rope is a great emergency type system, using the proper gear if you have the time to, is better for the environment. while im no tree hugger, i know that if everyone went around wrecking trees with winches, parks and wildlife would soon be closing all the tracks to allow for revegetation. id also say its pretty rare for a quality hook to be the failure point of the winch or rope, so the chance of that going flying is very slim. great idea you have, and it certainly has its place for emergency recoveries so well done there!

Good idea, however every rope has a minimum radius specification. By putting your freedom line through a sharp recovery point as you have, you risk of cutting your line. A 7/8" diam. or 1" diam. shackle will not damage rope unlike a sharp recovery point. Having said that, It's still a good idea, hope it takes off. Good luck. Cheers.

Hey, a quick lesson on how to ring-bark a tree - use this! Whilst I think you have come up with a great way to add to safe winching; not using a tree trunk protector is a bad idea. Not only is the load concentrated on a narrow band around the tree, but your synthetic rope is also unprotected. Yes for this to ditch the hook and/or bow shackle, but please combine this idea with a tree trunk protector. Not sure what happens in the land of freedom, but if we damage tracks and trees in Australia, they close the track. Also, if you have a great tree on the exit of a well worn track that everyone uses, and the tree dies, well there goes your anchor point. Great idea, but...

Pinching is not the reason why metal cables break. that's was merely part of the issue. metal cable snapped due to improper use and/or improper servicing of the cable. You can easily snap synthetic and still cause a dangerous whip with the same improper use. The only difference is you don't need to lubricate the cable to ensure it is not rusting inside out and it's not as dangerous and metal cable (However it is still dangerous). With both steel and synthetic the cable needs to be periodically inspected for wear but with synthetic you have to take more concern than metal. Also how does this save trees? you went from a wide band that evenly distributes the stress back down to the winch cable width. Same as using chain or any other cable and choke the tree like before. Also now you're putting wear on your cable by wrapping it around abrasives instead of throwing a "tree saver" strap and sacrificing that instead. quicker easier faster? maybe Stronger? Where's the test for tensile strength? I'm not talking about lifting up 50% of your Jeep weight up a tree at a higher than 15%. You just shown it can do 3,000lbs. You're stating it should do 30,000lbs. The cable is capable at 30,000lbs but how about the knot? what is the point of failure where the knot can not held with friction by pinching it between the rope loop? Let's be honest. majority of people getting "stuck" are at most at 10,000lbs of resistance. If a 5,000lb vehicle is truly stuck it will be at around 15,000lbs of resistance. Depending on the brand of 3/8 " HMPE line (what your product description is on your webpage) depends on capacity but you will find around 19,000 lbs. That is far cry from the 30,000lb rating that you're claiming. Considering it is a 3/8" HMPE line you should test the knots and loop configurations to that 19,000lb spec. 19,000lb is plenty for these lightweight vehicles as long as the knot and loops do not fail under tension. I'm concerned that at 19,000 lbs the knot will slip out of the pinching loop which a shackle would not do. If your product safely passes or surpasses that 19,000lb rating at independent testers then this will be quite the upgrade. I would love to see this knot get tested at every loop and see if it can hold the capacity of that 3/8" HMPE line of 19,000lbs. Since you're getting into the winch business I would love for someone to start actually teaching the real principles of winch operations. It's more than just hooking a line up and pulling and if doesn't pull then using a 2:1. there are so many factors into winching that that. I have yet to see any channel get deep into it correctly and hit all the numbers right.

I came across it while watching videos on soft shackles as I'm putting together a recovery kit for my truck. I don't have a winch otherwise I would preorder a line right now. Actually, maybe I should just order one and use the recovery rope because I could still simplify my recovery kit. This along with a few shackles so I can create a snatch block would be awesome.

I like what you have... but I still believe in a tree protector (something padded to prevent brak and trunk damage) You have a soft sling shackle incorporated at the end of a winch line, instead of a steal hook. Which in itself is a good option for us explorer's. If we want to replace our winch line with what you have educated us with I like this. But I think you need to further your idea so all the other accessories are not redundant. I am from oz (Australia) we also use sand anchors... and other terrain devices, as we don't want to damage our environment anymore then the track we are on. (Again tree protectors) but I think you have something that is right, it gets us away from the metal that is the biggest flying risk factor in opperator safety. I like where you are going.

MADE IN THE USA - This channel is what it is because of YOU! If you would like to order one of find out more information, please check it out at freedomwinchline.com/ Follow us on instagram at: instagram.com/freedomwinchline/ #FreedomWinchLine

They call it a tree saver because it saves the tree. What your doing is about the same as wrapping the line around the tree and hooking it back to itself. Plus if you run a synthetic rope through an anchor point with 90 degree edges, you cut into the rope. How many times can you do that before you break the end of the rope? That rope doesn’t look cheap, hope it comes with a good warranty.

If you made what might be called an extra long double ended soft shackle you could have all the features of your new winch rope that would still replace the bag of winching accessories. It would be a 'half way house' for anyone not wanting to spend as much money and could be used with existing traditional full length cable or rope winches until they were ready to replace with a new full length BleepinJeep rope.

Say “tree saver” one more time lol. I’d like to see some data on traditional tree savers vs doubled up synthetic line. The tree saver idea was born back before synthetic lines were introduced to keep people from wrapping a steel cable around a tree. I’m not sure there’s a whole lot of difference in a strap and synthetics except the overall area, but the difference is minimal at best
@rweasel801
@rweasel801 3 года назад
Minimal at best?? Lets say you have a tree thats 16" in diameter (thats a decent sized tree for winching). The circumference would be about 50", lets say the winch line, not set up like a choker, will press against 1/3 of that on the far side of the tree. So about 16 " of tree tree trunk. Lets say a moderate winch pull... maybe 5000lb for easy math. 1/2" winch line x 16" of tree = 8 square inches of surface. 5000lb / 8sqin = 625 psi on the tree. Now lets do the same math with a 3" tree saver. 3" tree saver x 16" of tree = 48sqin. 5000lb / 48 sq in = 104 psi. Still a lot but I wouldn't call 1/6 of the pressure "minimal at best". Please use a tree saver.
@MrJka1920
@MrJka1920 3 года назад
Of course, use every means necessary to better the environment, but your math doesn’t account for the double stitched synthetic line in his video, or the sheath portion wrapped around the tree. Simply saying 1/2” line is inaccurate in reality according to the video. Standard winch line, absolutely, but he’s not selling a standard winch line. It’s double braided with a sheath, approximately 2” vs a standard strap assuming everyone uses a 3” tree saver. Do the math with a 2” tree saver and his 2” synthetic, minimal at best. I’m all for tree savers, but like I said, I’d like to see some actual data that proves harm to the tree

@@zerocoolak Yeah, just thinking about when it breaks down from dirt and rocks, it might take a lot of the end with it. Considering this costs as much as a winch, that's quite a downside. Using a plain cable with various ends that will take the most abuse will save your cable longer.

Just get a FID and do it to your existing rope. It’s just a built in soft shackle. Loop and a Lovers knot. I’d rather just have a loop so my options aren’t limited. I don’t always use a soft shackle on the end though. It’s easy enough to put a soft shackle on a loop instead of a flat link or a clevis hook. Just my 2¢…

Following the examples in this video is going to lead to damaged trees and frayed winch lines. Tree Savers exist for a reason - embodied in the title. Attaching the winch line directly to a sharp metal edge like the shackle brackets is going to fray and weaken the line. While running the soft rope line around a tree may not do as much damage as a steel cable line, it's still going to damage the bark and cambium layers, especially on a thin bark tree, and any movement is going to fray the line.

No tree saver is a no go if you want to continue using trails (also in emergency use, there is one in a traditional winch bag and it will save your rope from ripping while having to recover in an emergancy ), also so many vehicles have sharp recovery locations and again this is a no go, so you still need all that stuff listed to make it work safely :/
