As a Dutch person: there's a big difference between DECRIMINALIZATION and LEGALIZATION. No, not all drugs in the Netherlands is legal to sell, own, or distribute in any way, but when you are a drug user you are not send to jail or criminally charged. Instead there are systems in place to help these people. So no, you can't just buy fentanyl or meth legally, but when you are a user of these substances there are many places that you can go to where you are offered help without worrying about being send to jail. We don't dehumanize drug users, we try to help them and that system works very well.

I'm a bit late to this, but yeah. I'm also Dutch, my dad was an addict. He got clean and became an expert by experience for the rest of his life. He always told me that the hardest thing for addicts is to be sober in society. I grew up in the rehab my dad worked; I was there at least 2 afternoons a week as a kid. Addicts are people. It's not some moral failure, or peer pressure that got them into it. I've now had the privilege to live in multiple countries across the world and while the Netherlands and Portugal for sure have issues with their drug use, the big difference is the cultural perspective of addicts. In the US they're seen as losers, like they have some personal flaw that caused them to be like this. In the Netherlands addiction is much more seen as a disease, and addicts are treated as such. That's the big difference in why it has worked (somewhat) in the Netherlands and is a huge failure in Portland.

The Oregon laws are designed to fail, point blank. There were originally supposed to be rehabilitation and support systems to help these people and whatever there is ( if anything) is radically insufficient. It’s designed to eventually garner support for more police and militarization and the profiteering of the prison industrial complex.

As someone from the Netherlands, it's interesting that they said they used the Netherlands as an example, because he left out one important detail: the Netherlands didn't decriminalize ALL drugs. A clear distinction was made between soft drugs and hard drugs. Soft drugs include cannabis, some mild narcotics and a few psychedelics like magic truffles. Everything else is still very much illegal. Not making the distinction between weed or heroin or fentanyl is the reason it doesn't work.

The thing is: true addiction DOES NOT CARE about a drug’s criminal status. The problem is they decriminalized it without adequate funding into some treatment and rehabilitation places to help provide “a way back” from these problems that would arise.
@gcandy2594
@gcandy2594 Месяц назад
Criminalizing drugs is a way to help people get off of drugs. If you get caught with the drug you go to jail, they put you through detox. I don’t think the jail sentences should be years and years long but it is a deterrent and jail does help you get clean.
@jaythomas468
@jaythomas468 Месяц назад
@@gcandy2594 Except in a LARGE PERCENTAGE of cases, forcing someone through detox off of “hard drugs” without adequately addressing the SOURCE and PSYCHOLOGICAL COMPONENT of their addiction only makes it so that when they ARE FINALLY RELEASED from incarceration, the likelihood that they’ll overdose and die upon relapse goes up about tenfold (and you might be thinking, “well, that’s on THEM,” which IT IS, but that’s also an incredibly CRUEL WAY to view what’s essentially a consequence of mental illness and statistically-speaking, relapse is ALMOST GUARANTEED to happen upon the first few attempts to “force” the addict into getting clean with incidence rates of like 91%). Criminalizing drugs doesn’t really help much or act as much of a deterrent with a psychological, emotional, and existential PROBLEM. Otherwise, by your logic, countries that enact the death penalty on drug abusers should have a PERFECT 0% score for incidence rate(s) of addiction, BUT THAT’S NOT THE CASE.
@jaythomas468
@jaythomas468 Месяц назад
@@gcandy2594 But ultimately, it’s a twofold PROBLEM. It’d be like if we continued to have the 2nd Amendment as it currently EXISTS in relation to firearms but then NULLIFIED every type of criminal offense RELATED to the USE and CARRY of said firearms where ANYONE with the capacity for critical thinking could TELL YOU WHAT WOULD HAPPEN.

@@datboybobbycause we mistreat them. The difference truly is that america allows big pharma to make a drugs for profit. Where do you think fet came from? The opiod crisis? All big pharma. They also tricked us during covid into taking an untested shot so they can profit off being a mandated drug. From what i understand if they mandate it, they make a garunteed mil. Booster shots and all are part of it. Not all vaccines are bad but the problem is big pharma adds known toxins to get an autoimmune response that crosses the blood brain barrier in order to prove to the government it should be allowed and mandated due to the immune response it shows. They just leave out the mercury and aluminum causing the response cause a dead virus vaccine is safer than a live virus vaccine due to spread but doesnt have the autoimmune response and the government wont allow live virus cause the spread would be too much to handle for even a common flu since the live virus has a greater chance of instead infecting and spreading rather than just being a punching bag for your immune system to practice on. It gets deeper than that but thats just the surface. The research is out there. Its just hard to find.

The majority of US voters don’t approve of decriminalizing all drugs. These problems are only happening in liberal run cities. Ideologues are afraid to push a drug addict to get help and clean up their lives. Instead they support them with free needles. While there isn’t a perfect solution to homelessness and addiction this is NOT the answer in the USA. Non profits that help homeless and addicts get off the streets are too invested in keeping their non profits funded by keeping them on the streets.

God Bless! And also, He doesn't want you to go to Hell, but He wants you to go to Heaven with Him but you have to be Saved. How do I get Saved you might ask? Here are the steps below on how to get Saved! 1. Believe that God sent His Son (Jesus) to die on a cross for your sins and that He rose again from the dead 3 days later. 2. Confess to Jesus that you are a sinner and ask forgiveness for your sins and Turn away from your sins. If you sin again after asking forgiveness of that sin, ask forgiveness again and try not to do it ever again. Jesus will forgive you! 3. Ask Jesus to come into your heart and your life and for Him to be your Lord and Savior forever. 4. Build a Personal Relationship with Jesus by Praying and Reading the Bible daily and Live for Him Forever. I'm Praying for you and you are loved! (Romans 10:9-13)

If you are caught openly using drugs, you are still arrested, and the government sets up an intervention for you and your whole family. If your family won't do it, they still hold the intervention and make you go to rehab. That is why decriminalization has worked so well in Portugal. It is wild to me places like Portland set up programs based off success in other countries without doing any research into why those actually programs worked.

I used to be homeless in Portland. The hardest part about it is that basically every homeless person is addicted to drugs, and they all form these circles where they start to rely on eachother, and they become more trapped. I was able to get out of it, but the main reason why I'm no longer homeless is because I stayed as far away from other homeless people as I possibly could. Also, a note on homeless shelters: 1.) It's very common to have all of your stuff go missing at those places. Theft in shelters is worse than on the streets. 2.) Staff sometimes abuse the people at the shelters 3.) When you're trying to sleep in a shelter, it's also very common to hear people having sex or masturbating. Sleeping in a tent or in a car is preferable to sleeping in a shelter. Those places are also havens for drug dealers. I honestly understand the drug use. I never got into hard drugs, but I was reliant on marijuana because the entire thing was so stressful. The biggest problem I had was resisting the urge to drink alcohol during this time. I think that if I was drinking instead of smoking, I would probably still be homeless (and an alcoholic) The thing most people don't understand about this is most people get into drugs AFTER they are homeless, because it's the only recreational activity that you really have access to. 12:22 People like this are to blame. 13:32 yes, this actually happened to me, but it was a cop who took my ID. I think it was his version of a sick joke. I tried going to the DMV to get a replacement, but they could not do anything for me because I had no proof of identity 17:09 I actually used to do these "nature walks" to try and keep my mind off of being homeless. The scariest thing is when you accidentally find a homeless camp in the woods, and you're unsure if they people occupying are dangerous or not.

I was homeless in Portland with my mother in 2005 when I was 8 years old. There was mental illness involved but never drugs. We lived in a tent in the back of a youth hostel, and when it got cold or if I got sick the hostel would let us sleep in the attic. It was rough back then, but it’s crazy to see the direction it’s gone in. Life is still rough for me, but I have my own son now, my own apartment in Detroit, Mi, and I’m in an apprenticeship to be a traditional tattooist which is cool. I carry a lot of fear with me that one thing will fall apart and I’ll be on the streets again. Just gotta trust the vision.

Question for OP: I don’t know what you were addicted to, but do you think treating people with ADHD meds for meth addiction might help? People are often drawn to drugs to self-medicate their existing problems. I’m wondering if ADHD meds might help the same way methadone helps heroin addiction. I’ve done neither drug, so I’m genuinely asking. I just know that people with ADHD commonly feel like they’re failing at life, and it can lead them into giving up on trying and eventually drug use. Do you think it would help?

@@derekstiles5801 Numerous times in the video people are asked on the streets if they have had anyone to come by and help. The response is no. Not saying money fixes the problem because what does is actually getting out there and at the very least attempting to understand the psychology behind the matter. This is what Kevin is doing and if he had the money I'd wage he would actually have a team out there to attempt to help those who actually want it because the only true way to help someone is someone who wants the help. This is also why the psychology and being in the field with them is important. No one said anything about free stuff and no one said money would fix it, but I am saying if Kevin had the means he'd be a person that'd probably actually be able to help because he wouldn't be in it for the purpose of the charity as the "billions" as you say thrown away to it. I have often questioned why we encouraged and supported his move to that city, but you can find drugs anywhere so I'm not sure what role Portland played in my son's premature death. This is what happens in primitive states like yours, here in Switzerland heroin has been prescribed for 40 years (same thing in half of Europe) no deaths and fentanyl obviously never arrived... Your government should stop fooling the electorate with propaganda and show what really causes the problem with opiates at least…(because there are drugs that are harmful even without cutting, like cocaine, therefore it is not possible to prescribe them since it would not bring any benefit) but for opiates the prescription is certainly the most ethical and humane way to follow (since it saves lives and improves the quality of the same) or you continue to pretend that the cause of the dead is not exclusively the fault of your narrow-mindedness... The problem with fentanyl is that it is a fully synthetic opioid designed to act transdermally (natural source opioids like morphine/heroin cannot be absorbed transdermally) so it is designed to be absorbed very slowly, it stands to reason that if you take fentanyl as you would do with morphine/heroin this is harmful (since it has too rapid an action, taken in another way, therefore not transdermally) the problem with this category of drugs is exclusively placed in the cut practiced by speculators (so it is enough to prescribe heroin or other equivalent opiates such as morphine or hydromorphone) opiates are totally harmless in the long term (overdoses only started to be talked about with prohibition, given that cutting the substance does not allow consumers to calculate the correct dose or know what they are taking) so there are no excuses (the blame it is exclusive of your vulgar policy that deceives you with propaganda) it is no coincidence that these substances are prescribed even to extremely sick and dying patients (let alone therefore if they can be in any way dangerous) with pharmaceutical heroin, therefore pure white, you can get at 100 years even if addicted, you will also not be limited in any way as for those who are addicted these drugs are just a psychic cover (no visible high, just a medicine a psychic cover)

It's been said in countries where they've had real success legalizing drugs that they DO NOT tolerate drug users walking around the city (and public parks) wreaking havoc while high. In other words they've said "Yes you can do this BUT we are not going to allow you to antagonize, harass or otherwise scare other citizens while doing so." How else could it possibly work? Just legalizing drugs and then allowing them to continue wreaking havoc on the city doesn't work.

It’s not necessarily about them being in public while intoxicated. In countries where they have legalised, you will find users intoxicated in public however this is limited and controlled because of the fact that they are also given support. •Support such as being housed, regardless of wether they are using substances or not - keeping people safe & giving other options rather than the streets. •Financial support & access to Free healthcare, which keep people safe & massively improves the chance of a more stable mindset. • People are given therapy, support workers and coaching, which helps enable people to successfully get back into society. •Offer people various ways of getting back into free education, apprenticeships for different supported programs/volunteer work in order to empower people to get back into the workplace. It’s **this** vital support that massively improves the quality of life for all people, both keeping people safe and enables them to rejoin society. It also massively increases the likelihood of people being able to engage with support to quit substance use altogether. Criminalising addiction doesn’t help anybody but also leaving them to rot doesn’t help either which is what Portland is doing. They just switched rotting in jail for rotting in the streets. Statistically decriminalisation along with support systems work and actually cost less to society in the long run. It’s an extremely effective way to help, actually offer support and pathways that work regardless of addiction status. ----- Of course America seems to operate on a vastly different system than EU countries, People in America can be working full-time and still not afford to have healthcare or pay for their medical bills. Choosing to die because you cannot afford treatment is not something I’ve ever heard of growing up in Europe, however I know this has been the case in America - after meeting a man in Hospital in Copenhagen he told me very directly how shocked he was that this service was free (he was on holiday) And how that they had found a ruptured cyst ( I think?) and if they hadn’t operated he would be dead because despite being in an increasing amount of pain for many weeks, if he hadn’t of been on this holiday he would not of sought medical treatment due to the potential cost and that he would ever dream of calling an ambulance because shockingly you have to pay hundreds for that also.
