That gate works as a checkpoint. They would open it and the fed would drive in to show there clearance badge. A ton of area 51 footage i've seen is the feds and security normally drive in trucks so it could be 100% possible they thought you were a fed.

Hence they didn't hesitate to close it back. To imagine you could've possibly fooled the guards at their post and possibly gained access to 51.

If you look at the set up when they opened that gate, notice the far gate is still closed, concrete barriers on both side, fences, this is a kill zone if needed.

They opened the secondary gate to let you approach the main gate with an ID. If you actually pulled up they’d have closed the gate behind you and trapped you there.
