We just have 7-8 stretches of 1km which look international from certain angles. Indians are not civilized. There is no point having a beautiful well built city when citizens are trashy. We need dictatorship. Both ways. Strict citizens who keep government selfless and corruptionfree, and a wise government which keeps citizens disciplined and civilized.

People in general don't have civic sense. It's the regulations and rules in those countries with what they see from childhood is behind the reason why those cities are clean. If you look at Indians in foreign country you will find them following these rules because of the regulations.

Every City Can be Nice in India but people lack civic sense. People freely urinate in open, Throw Trash in Water Bodies, Defacate on Railway Lines, Throws the Waste Unsegregated. This is a HUGE Problem in India. People blame Population but Hong Kong and Singapore have one of the highest population density in the world and yet those cities are one of the cleanest. People blame poverty but Poverty doesnt give you license to Litter around and Defacate in Open. The Attitude of Indian People must change. This civic sense should be taught in schools from a young age. Trash Segregation should be taught in Environmental Studies Subject

Poverty and corrupt governments are the two biggest problems. Poverty restricts people from getting the right education and knowledge and our government or you can say these politicians do not care about poverty they want power in every election and pocket large sums of money....even we don't have a proper waste management system is...

I agree about lack of civic sense, however these same people observe the civic laws with utmost sincerity when they go to other countries. It's the combination of availability of infrastructure, awareness of cleanliness and threat of fines/action that allow people to follow the rules. For example, in Dubai, there are dustbins every few meters. These dustbins themselves are regularly emptied and maintained in a clean way. With such a level of availability, it becomes very easy to ensure that any rubbish is always discarded in dustbins. Plus there's the constant threat of heavy fines if someone is found littering or spitting in public places.

Of course this is a negative video, we are talking about a poor country that just recently starting to become self sufficient. Funny she compares with South Africa and Brazil. Brazil had higher GDP than India less that two decades ago, now India has double the GDP. While India is the fastest growing major economy in the world South Africa is falling back to become a third world country. Well, at least it's not CCP paid propaganda. Talk about China, their cities are full of suddenly imploding roads due to bad quality. Their highest buildings are unsafe to use so they are largely empty. Parts of their buildings fall on the street with strong winds. Currently another huge flooding problem in China that is much worse than India because dams release water without warning, so you can have meters of flooding within ten minutes. So for all the bad publicity, India is doing relatively better than China, just have some patience.

In our Howrah Municipal Corporation of West Bengal, last elections were held in 2013. It's term expired in 2018. So it's next term was supposed to be held in 2018 but it wasn't in last 6 years. So just imagine - a term last for 5 years but whole 6 years void of elections. As a result it's now also void of waste management, public hygiene & sanitation services, one of nation's worst sewerage, garbage capital of East India . Illegal construction & ecological sensitivity destruction & syndicate everywhere which was even accepted by our CM!🤦 And was one of dirtiest cities of India. But we know even if elections are held nothing will change because they will be in only name- we couldn't cast our own vote but it'll be ballot rigged by booth capturings by local strongmen and goons & mafias of the state ruling party. When even formed undemocratic like rest of 100 municipalities of the state u cannot expect them to provide civic facilities. So first reforms and then fund flow is necessary or else it will go to the pockets of strongmen instead of our gully-mohallas.

This Infrastructure problems video is a trending contect in youtube now, but the elaborateness of your content, the brief explanation of understanding the core issues, instead of pin pointing just 'government', connecting past and all that, and the comparative details of why we lack behind from others, is very gripping to watch, and very educative. A very interesting explanation, very different approach from other vids I seen recently. Thanks.

As an urban planner, I really appreciate the fact that our cities are finally becoming a topic of discussion by online creators (which I hope it trickles down in the physical world). But this topic is so vast and complex that it deserves a series of its own. While I agree with a lot of points raised in the video, I do not agree with the modernist approach that is still used as a reference by Indians. For example, it has been widely studies that treating cities like machines and separating their uses only lead to longer travel time and a car-centric development (look at northern American cities). In fact, there is something called the 3Ds of urbanism that is considered a good practice today: Density, Diversity and Design. Similarly, it is time we stop obsessing over Le Corbusier and his plan of Chandigarh. Check out how his proposals to redesign Paris were kicked off by the French! For Chandigarh, he came out of nowhere, had no idea of Indian culture and context and just imposed his plan. City planning is a continuous process that should be democratic and decentralized! In the end, I really think the key is to make urban planning a political topic. It’s crazy how our bad air, water and overall built environment is not at all discussed in our local elections.
@ashishy
@ashishy 4 дня назад
You're right, we should focus on dense, walkable, mixed-use development. Chandigarh is the opposite, and it's frustrating that its design has been idealized, leading to the creation of large, unwalkable "Sectors" around Delhi NCR . However to differ a bit, I think city planning should blend centralized and decentralized approaches ie it should be mixed. The center should set the overall framework and regulations, but local governments should implement these plans, considering local contexts and public participation and input. For example, zoning and land use categories along with accosiated fsi/far framework should be standardised nationally, but local governments should have the power to designate specific areas according to those guidlines. Japan does it that way, and it seems to work. Another example could be universal design codes. You are an urban planner in India, which I think is rare, people like you are our only hope! 😄
@amu_meh
@amu_meh 2 дня назад
@@ashishy I'll be surprised if your are not a city planner (or a well read architect) yourself! I do second that, planning should infact be iterative and a mix of bottom-up and top-down approach. Our neighbourhoods inherently were quite walkable places, but a lot has been lost after the post 90s automobile boom..

I am no expert on urban design, but as someone living in Europe, I see that there are other good street patterns apart from grid. Instead, most cities have a ring pattern, which is divided into sectors where people can find their basic amenities within walking distances. This is something that I have seen only in Chandigarh, even though it has a grid pattern. Also, almost every European city I have been to has a park, waterway, or some element of nature at a walkable distance. Apart from patterns, there are a lot of other elements that are well planned and executed here, for instance, flow of traffic - one way streets which allow two way traffic only for bicycles. Or take this - Low Emission Zone (LEZ) restriction implemented in many important cities, which prohibit the entry of vehicles below a certain emission class. If those people still want to enter the city, they can either pay a fee, or park their vehicles outside the city and take public bicycles to go inside the city. These can be taken and dropped off at bike stations that are maintained by the city and paid by subscribers. Measures like this encourages the use of bicycles instead of other polluting means of transport. This is not meant as a way to beatdown Indian cities, but a call to draw inspiration and make our cities better. I understand that India faces a problem of scale, corruption, and a lot more. But if we can achieve impossible feats like sending a probe into the dark side of the moon with a budget that is a fraction of what countries spend on similar projects (and still fail), can't we solve the issues of our cities?

There are multiple ways to approach city planning and each development has numerous layers of different types of professions and perspectives involved. There are a lot of complexities and intricacies involved which are left behind due to the rapid developments we are seeing and the partial fault of the people involved. If you delve even deeper into the topic you will find more issues to discuss and present. A good video nonetheless.

This video really opened my eyes to why India’s infrastructure is struggling. The comparison with international cities like Tokyo and the insights into the deep-rooted issues in Bangalore, Mumbai, and Delhi were spot on. The lack of civic sense, rapid unplanned growth, and restrictive land use policies are major hurdles. The example of Tokyo's zoning laws and mixed-use buildings was fascinating. It's clear that our cities need better planning and regulations to manage growth effectively. The traffic problems in Bangalore and the challenges in expanding Mumbai vertically due to restrictive FSI rules were especially illuminating. The piece on Mumbai's outdated drainage system and the recurring flooding issue highlighted the urgency for infrastructural upgrades. Delhi's water crisis and pollution problems further emphasize the need for sustainable urban management. Overall, this video provided a comprehensive look into the complexities of urban planning and the unique challenges faced by Indian cities. Great job!

There is huge difference between test taking and actual implementation of that knowledge successfully on the ground. I do agree if compensation was competitive many could go that route, but difference between India and Developed countries like Singapore, US, Can, New Zealand, Germany etc..is that young ppl WANT to be in these type of jobs...not just for money but for doing the right thing. Even in those countries, these are typically not highly paid jobs...but there is a natural interest in doing these jobs with decent income but. huge impact on the civilization. Separate zoning for commercial and residential doesn’t make a city more walkable. The US is a good example of this.

The real problems are with people in India. I still remember before the arrival of Nitin Gadkari in our village, people hit a strike so that they can get large amount for there land although govt is already offering 4x more than the regular price tag. In China people can't claim any property there because everything is owned by government. In Japan population is very less and there was a lot of space back during the time of there independence. I our country we already have a very dense population and most of it already own by people What happens to Dharavi redevelopment project from last 75 years.

Lol, So many facts you got wrong and some people actually agreed with you tells me alot about the Indian mind. Chinese citizens can't own property? Japanese independence from whom?

Are you A WhatsApp student? Got degree from Galgotia University? Look at the population density of Tokyo. Japans land is same as rajasthan. And, in China all can take land from the land owner

lol whatsapp university, japan was always strong, they were literally an Empire. from which country they got independence lol. The people liking your comments clearly shows the knowledge level of indians. They know nothing about the world because they don't believe in reading good and accurate books. All they want is someone to spoonfeed even if it is poison.

Not necessarily. It’s a misconception that larger population is the problem. Human Resource is always a blessing provided it is properly utilised. Because cities in our country are managed like this, we have this pre conceived notion.

Visit Bangalore railway station and walk to kempegowda metro station. Both are public infrastructures. Both are used by the same people. What makes the difference? Just two things mindset of people in office and courage of citizens.
