It was originally sung back Black soldiers fighting in the civil war, it was a complaint about a gun that couldn't shoot straight! To clarify I'm English not American this is just some trivia I picked up, I also heard it was an early song sung by slaves on a chain gang!

Baloney, this is an old English folk song centuries old. "Black Betty" is referring to either.or wiskey or a bull whip used in the penitentiary back in the day. That's where Lead Belly learned it while serving time.
@@Altinget Over the centuries I can believe it has meant sevaral different things. But Lead Belly learned this song in prison. His rendition probably meant the whip the prison guards used back in the day. But, originally I have reason to believe it means whiskey simply because of the age of the song and location (England) Back then whiskey was bottled in a black glass bottle.
When I was a teenager this song was on every jukebox. Pool halls, pizza restaurants, juke joints, country clubs etc. A lot of quarters were spent on this tune.
This has been one of my favorite songs for decades! If I ever get pulled over for speeding while listening to this song, I'll consider the ticket well worth it!

I was 13 years old and going into grade 9 in high school when this song came out...... and..... because Vancouver wasn't as multi-cultural back in the 60's as it is now we only had a few black people in our school of about 2,000 kids. and..... there was one girl..... who happened to be black..... and, of course, her name was Betty. and..... she didn't like that song at all... imagine kids singing "wooaaahhh Black Betty" at her in the hallways, etc... but we became best friends because of that song after I punched a big bully.
