Imagine how great Dylan's book is going to be. He already gives so much life and details to his reactions and content. Having him write a book? It'll the best book ever. Can't wait.

here's my pov: in the book, it is pretty clear that Hannah has depression, and that stays open in the series. The book explains everything better and make her look less selfish than the series do.

Tbh when i watched the show, she also seemed pretty snobish and, i don't know.. just.. not such a good person. But in the book she was so different. She was so kind and nice. She honestly did nothing wrong. And it didn't look like she was doing it out if revenge, it just looked like she truely wanted them to understand what they did to her.

Petra Romero it is an accurate representation it’s different for everyone and it wasn’t even revenge in the show either it was to explain which was also said twice throughout the first two seasons

Yeah that's great, calling someone's reason for suicide "childish." Geez, she watched someone get raped, she got rape, she was bullied mercilessly. Wtf
@erinmcn14
@erinmcn14 3 года назад
@Petra Romero the thing with the reasons is only a few actually would’ve had a huge affect on her on their own, but because she had a few huge reasons. The other smaller ones that shouldn’t made her kill herself, just pushed over the edge. She probably wouldn’t have been long term bothered by them if less had happened

I read the book before I watched the series and I kinda felt the opposite. The book in a way was more realistic. The series dramatized everything and made connections where there weren’t any. The book showed that some people are just careless and aren’t aware of their actions and not everything has an exact reason or motive. Some people are just blissfully unaware and the book’s message was a cautionary tale to people that their actions have consequences whether they realize it or not. Also, Hannah’s suicide was less dramatic in the book as she specifically stated she didn’t want there to be a big mess for someone to have to clean up whereas in the show it was as dramatic as it could get and made the show seem like it was that way just for dramatic effect. However, I still was entertained watching the series and enjoy your interesting take on the show and the book.

I thought the book just wasn’t written as good for a story. The first season of the show did a better job cause in the book some of the reasons of the tape like zach and Ryan and even Courtney are pretty stupid. Also they’re are weird ways the author describes words that are honestly strange. Also I agree with Dylan why is clay the main character I like clay like he could have been anybody. Also Hannah was awful as a person and a character in the book, I think when the first season came out it came as a revenge story but I think in the book it feels even more like a revenge story. The show personally is a little better I mean just season 1 being like a 7/10, a and the book is prolly a 5 or a 4/10 and for the show I’m only counting the first season and a little bit of the second season

I agree with a lot of points you made. I read the book a couple years ago, and when seeing the series I did notice major differences, I do enjoy the series more. I like how we get to explore the backgrounds of the characters, why they acted how they did instead of just going based off of the tapes and the impact Hannah’s suicide left on all of them. Plus we get a bonus character... Jeff . JEFFFFF 😭😭

While I agree with many of your points on the book and where it lacks development. I also believe since you came to them in reverse order (watching the show and then reading the book) you came to the book with some preconceived expectations. You also don't allow for the fact that, in reality most times, people simply aren't that deep and do and say cruel things without a complexly developed agenda. It's actually more realistic that Courtney spouts out about Hanna having sex toys just for attention. A teenage girl just spouting a baseless rumor is much more in tune with reality than this deeply developed under-story.

I love the book. I don’t compare the book and show too much anymore. They are very different. The author didn’t give the characters as much background for a reason. It wasn’t about them. It was about Hannah. It was nice to see in the show but I feel as if a completely different story was put together for the show. The book was just inspiration.

I don't think Hanna feel like people owe her. I think it's more about her mental issues. In the show she clearly dealt with a lot of shit, depression included, and I think when you suffer from any sort of mental ilness things aren't as clear. I mean, you seem to be helthy, mentally. And I say seem to be not are because I don't want to assume. But I do get some thing Hanna felt. Like with Zack, when she saw herself as not wothy of an explenation? I get that. I understand someting happening, something so little and something that to a healthy person seems like nothing but to someone who has mental problems, to someone like me, it may be the end of the world. I don't think helthy people kill themseves on a whim, I think they suffer and than they decite it to end, and ill people.. well.. life is a struggle, there are days when I can't get out of bed and I think the world would be better for it, and each days is a struggle, but I survive because I have loving friends and family, an amazing job, but what does Hanna have? Her classmates are awful, she has almost no friends, people spreading rumors about her, she's groped by the boys she meets. Are we really suprised that her story ended where it did? I cannot even imagine how awful it must have been in her head. I feel like this is something people don't get. Hanna wasn't just selfcentered, or stupid, or anything.. she was just hurt, and lonely and depressed, and humiliated and so so much more..
@serenatsukino5252

I agree with you a lot. And let's not forget that this has been going on for years for Hannah. I don't know which grade she was in when she killed herself (I know she wasn't a senior) but when Bryce assaulted her, he said "remember in freshman year" implying that this has been going on for at least a year.

The book was to showcase how teens are assholes sometimes and do things to hurt other people for no reason because they only think about themselves. With the show it gives everyone a reason for hurting Hannah and it sort of makes to justify everyones actions, especially to the fans of the show, most LOVE the characters and they don't care after the explanations that they drove Hannah to suicide. (I also don't get how some people forgive Justin (I think that's his name?) for not telling that other girl that she was raped.) Also clay got on my nerves by just attacking EVERYONE around him for no reason at all and just in general for being an over dramatic prat, yes you got tapes but wait till you get to yours before you spiral, okay? Also the fact that they changed Hannah's death from pills to slitting her wrist to "make it more dramatic" makes me irate because it could have just as heart wrenching if they did they pill route with seeing the life slowly fade out of her eyes...and taking the pills goes more with Hannah's character in the book because she didn't want anymore pain in her life. Sorry that this is sort of unorganized it's kinda just a spill of thoughts :)

@LordDomielOfElysium
@LordDomielOfElysium 2 года назад
I think giving an explanation just makes them more human, because otherwise it’s just very one sided. It’s still one sided even tho they did give explanation but it took awhile. Also he didn’t tell “the girl” she was raped because she already knew, she knew all along, and that’s a stupidly hard conversation. Clay was mentally ill and it got worse throughout the season, plus he is only hearing it from Hannas point of view, he doesn’t know the full story. And Clays tape wasn’t even bad, he didn’t even do anything, she was just a sensitive bitch on that end.
@amdsoftball12

I read the book first, and favored the book (it matters which one you watch first). I think Jay Asher's intention was for you to receive a limited view of the characters. He wanted you to only see it from Hannah's perspective. The show obviously has free rein of narrator, therefore can dive into other characters. Just as detailed experiences have their purpose, the book centered around Hannah and left out so many potential storylines because Jay Asher wrote Hannah's story. Interesting choice by Jay Asher, for sure. An omniscient point-of-view creates a completely different 13RW.
@picklegurrl
@picklegurrl 6 лет назад
This is a really interesting take on everything! I kind of think if you watch the movie first you'll almost always prefer it because thats where you're introduced to the story so to you that's the original. You're comparing the book to it, instead of the other way. Honestly the concept of Justin receiving the tapes is so interesting! And I do really love what they did for the adaptation. But I also like the book if you look at it as a pretty separate piece of work, cause in reality it's a long sort of fable telling you to be kind to others in this dramatic and stylistic way. It doesn't feel like a full book since there's not much interaction and whatnot. And usually I say if you like the movie you'll love the book (Youll find that with The Fault in Our Stars) because the book is just more of the characters you already love. But 13 reasons why is weird and different in that way.

I’d really like to find people who read this book as an adolescent (I’m 24 right now) and found that the reader and Clay were one, the timeline of Hannah’s story is ACTUALLY believable, and/or the victim complex is something fabricated in the show, not the book. Okay.....lots of stuff at once. I’m just trying to start a conversation not controversy!
@SaturdayParker
@SaturdayParker 4 года назад
I read the book at 18 in college and I thought the book was a good representation of suicidal people. What I liked about the book was it wasn't afraid to Hannah as having selfish motives in recording why she killed herself. Her wanting to do that was a revenge fantasy which is definitely not good. I understand the difficulty of getting help talking about that in the wrong places(the classrom? I think) and being discouraged from going to an actual therapist(later in he book when she's in the counselor's office). However, I loved the ending where clay moves on and talks to Sky. It made sense once you're gone that's it, tome and people move on.
@CutDorothy
@CutDorothy 3 года назад
@@SaturdayParker totally skipping over the fact that the message of the book is in the last few sentences is what kills most people's opinion on the book. The book is about Hannah, yes, but it's also about how Clay, a totally normal, fairly popular guy, is just living life in a fairly straight line without minding other people's business, not looking left and right. Not out of selfishness, but just .. cause he's like that. People don't need deep motives for everything they do, that's a thing for TV dramas and movies. Him walking up to Sky because he learned from what Hannah said, read sky's behaviour and tries to make a difference going forward is the main message of the book that the show imho totally glosses over. The show feels more like "be a good person" kinda message, which is honestly impossible all the time in your life, especially as a yet-to-mature individual.

I totally agree with you that the characters are way more interesting and explored in the series but the thing is it really depends on if you saw the series first or if you read the book first what point of view you have of the story. The series added a lot of stuff that was needed in order for it to be long enough as a series, in the book everything takes place in one night and it shows you only the perspective of hannah & clay (which is also interesting when you question how trustworthy the narrator in this case hannah is) so comparing the two is really depends on if you saw the series first (in which case the book seems lacking) or if you read the book first (in which case the series seems very different because they added a lot of stuff) I personally like the simpleness of the book and the way they show how hannah is obviously not in a good mental state by taking things out of proportion and blaming others for all the negative in her life. What I really love about the series is that they actually show you the motives of the people on the tapes. To me the two aren’t really comparable since they are so different from each other.

@kay9301 5 лет назад
I never thought of how interesting it would be to see everything from Justin's pov. Like you said, just experiencing with him the anxiety of knowing that what you did is exposed and no matter what you do, everyone on those tapes will know, even if not everything is true and you'll see 1. how your actions affected her so much and 2. what it was like for her and how she saw you. It must've been so hard too, because you know she killed herself and you yourself know what you did to her but having this confirmation that you pushed someone so far that they didn't want to live anymore is a lot. It would be so interesting to see though, how his perspective changes after that of everyone around him and then he knows who's getting the tapes next so he'll see the change in them as well. And then they probably silently agreed to go on as if nothing happened but it will affect his life afterwards.

I didn’t read the book but I heard Hanna’s suicide was different in the book she’s took bunch of pills but in the show they wanted it to have a way greater affect so she slised her whists which I thought was interesting that they even changed how the suicide happened.

I just want to comment on the book as well, though I haven't finished watching the review yet but I just want to comment already lol :) So, I get that it was to be dramatized and more tension was to be added because it's a series, but I feel like the plot is the same with the book but they are two completely different things. The book is meant to be pretty simple and plain, because that's it; that's suicide. She died and that's the end, it's as simple as that. So I think the reason that it was simple and not dramatized is because it's not meant to be dramatized, and having this huge mystery you're supposed to solve. It's just Hanna, speaking about why she did what she did and that's it. Also I want to comment on Clay's presence in the book. I think the fact that while the tape was going on and he would just comment in between... that was a way of bringing everyone back to reality; it's not just a story, it's pretty much a walk through and it says, "yeah time to go back to reality, that's in the past, it can not be changed, right now she is dead" in some parts when you're just getting into the whole scene of Hanna's narrative. I do agree though that I found no meaning in Clay's presence to the plot except from what I mentioned, and I think his tape was quite useless as well. I was pretty distracted with the new girl that was added to the story from Clay's past and so got confused when I read the end so I won't be able to comment on her presence in the book, I believe it serves a certain purpose, especially at the end of the book. Also I like how at the end of the book, I was just able to feel content. It was very peaceful foe the reader and that's great. It ended on a simple and a happy note, with Hanna's last words being her thanking, at least that's what my take on it is. I think the show added on a lot of characters that weren't in the book just to dramatize it and it makes it just so different from the book itself.

the point of the book is they didn't have any motive to mistreat hannah but they did it anyway bc kids are trash and don't think about their actions

I like more the book because you can see how small insignificant things can mess up Hannah, yet it doesn't glorify suicide revenge like the tv show does. Like, it shows mental health in a more realistic aspect. The tv show puts too much blame on others when it comes to her suicide. Is almost like "yeh you deserve the blame" and truly mental health doesn't work like that. The only person who could be blamed was Bryce, everyone else did bad things, but don't deserve the blame of a suicide. I just feel like the tv show, apart from that, does a lot of things that cause a lot of harm for the mental health community, whereas the book is only about her story, it doesn't spread a harmful message nor does it help.

I like the book better, maybe because I read it first when there was still no live adaptation. The book is just what it is. It was the story of Hannah seen in the eye of Clay. However the series just stretched it as much as they can because it's a series. It stretched more for another seasons cause the first one was a hit. My takeaway from the book was that even a simple and unintentional thing we do to people can be a big deal to them already as it pile up to what they are already going through.

what I really like about the book is the fat there is no side story, no more drama honestly thought he was the last tape so he would have gotten to keep it, but so happy he wasn't I didn't want a whole drama, I just wanted a reaction that summarises probably everyone elses reaction.

I loved this book alot even though it wasnt perfect. It was the first booknI read that took teenagers problems seriously 😐. That's what I will say about the book. I watched the show Freshmen year of college so it has some fond memories for me. You're right the show was better. But the book puts you in their heads is my main thought. I am glad you are reader.

the entire book was to showcase vulnerability and how in that suicidal state of mind, thought processes don’t really make any sense to other people. as well as the fact that certain people’s INDIVIDUAL actions didn’t cause her to commit, it was everyone put together so that’s why small things like what courtney did seem minuscule but for a young girl who has to constantly live in that world of torment especially when she’s not in the best state of mind just adds everything up and it led her to taking her life

I pretty much agree with your assessment of it. As someone who read the book first, I found it interesting because the idea was unique and it was done from a different perspective. Although, it did seem short so I was surprised that they were going to make a whole show surrounding it. That said, this is one of the rare times that the film version is better than the book because it just offers so much more insight. So I could see how watching the show first then then reading the book would be kinda disappointing. P.S. seriously do more book reaction vids!

definitely recommend Sea of Tranquility by Katja Millay, 10 Tiny Breaths by K.A. Tucker. If you are looking to read paranormal/fantasy fiction definitely recommend Harry Potter, Throne of Glass Series by Sarah J Maas, and any of the Shadowhunter Series by Cassandra Clare. All three authors are incredible at building different worlds and making them come alive. BTW would definitely be a member of your book club.
