I was thinking if you have at least 4 points ahead and both have no pawns, you're mostly gonna win (although difficult), for example queen vs rook wins, but queen vs 2 minors draws. Exception, 2 knights vs lone king draws CMIIW
@Amoeby
@Amoeby 2 года назад
That is not true. Queen wins against bishop and knight relatively easily, and queen has a forced win vs 2 bishops, however, it may take over 50 moves. Queen vs 2 knights in most cases is a draw.
@reubenmanzo2054

You need 5 pts. Queen can do it, rook can do it, 2 bishops can, bishop and knight can and while 2 knights can't, *3* knights can.

Wdym you don't want to trade? Are you not confident you can mate with a rook? If you are, trading is the simplest path to win.

I had a similar imbalance in my current only GM scalp. I had 2 rooks and 4, he had the bishop pair, a knight, and 3. In our game, I gave back the rook for the knight and 1, which allowed me to get a pin which one another, then my rook blockaded his pawn, and my three pawns and king marched to victory against his light-squared bishop, while his dark-squared bishop defended his pawn.

king + queen + knight vs king + rook + knight + bishop are some of the most mind-boggling endgames, where tablebase uncovered a bunch of forced checkmates in over 500 moves
@bongcloud4442
@bongcloud4442 2 года назад
@Ruhan Sure, from a practical standpoint vast majority of pawnless piece engames with roughly equal piece point value will end up as draws, either because of arbitrary 50 move rule or because actual solutions to those endgames are just beyond capabilties of human understanding, or most likely both of the above. Even "simple" KQ vs KR takes about 30 moves to win for KQ with perfect play on both sides, so a good defence or poor offense may snatch you a draw - but that was not my original point.
@bongcloud4442
@bongcloud4442 2 года назад
@Ruhan KQN vs KRNB is a forced mate in about 540 moves, this was calculated using table base brute force and current engines are unable to calculate it until mate, even though they follow the forcing sequence. Conversely, KQB vs KRNB is a loss for the side with a queen in a few hundred less moves. They are edge cases where 50 move rule hampers chess theory, even if for practical play they are basically irrelevant.

Very interesting endgame! I always try to capture my opponent's knights early in the game, to avoid having to be so careful not to step into the many possible forks. ESPECIALLY to avoid letting my opponent keep BOTH of his knights, because they would be able to fork almost anywhere on the board in a couple of moves.
@fantomghost6213

@jasonhe5578
@jasonhe5578 2 года назад
From what I remember 2 rooks vs 2 minors is a win with a few exceptions, while rook + minor vs 2 minors is a draw except in rook bishop vs 2 knights (over 200 move win when then knights are well placed, well beyond 50 moves) and rook bishop vs knight bishop (opposite colour bishops), which is a win. Magnus Carlsen won rook bishop vs knight bishop vs Francisco Vallejo Pons once.
@taavettiihantola561
@taavettiihantola561 Год назад
I believe rook + bishop vs knight + bishop is also a win if the bishops are opposite colours and there is no immediate tactics to simplify. Again, the win is usually much more than 50 moves and this is really rare, but I think there exists a Magnus game where he won this. I don't remember the details except that the defending king was already on the edge of the board.

Interesting. I saw an ending at a tournament where an Expert had a R+N+N vs R+N (no pawns). I remember thinking that as long as the superior side did not exchange anything, then an attack would probably win the game. That's what eventually happened.
@kingsgambit7098
@kingsgambit7098 4 месяца назад
Interesting, but if you knew how to win with rook vs knight I would have traded into that winning position. This is why I always favor two rooks vs 3 minor pieces. You have more control due to your ability to trade down into a favorable position. There are even positions where the rook is better than two minor pieces.
@simohayha6031
@simohayha6031 2 года назад
Most interesting imbalance I've seen is bishop + knight + knight vs rook. Pawnless. It might seem like it should be totally lost for the rook, but you can actually 'hunt' the bishop in an attempt to sack the rook for it and get knights vs king which is a draw. Makes the endgame very dynamic.
@simohayha6031
@simohayha6031 2 года назад
Basically the side with knights will try to move closer to checkmate you but at same time kinda has to protect their bishop whilst avoiding cut off and pin attempts. Very dynamic endgame and the engine sometimes struggles a little with the evaluation.
@judithcabanero

@eriksteffahn6172
@eriksteffahn6172 2 года назад
2 knights + bishop vs rook should just be a draw. The rook checking and attacking / pinning pieces from a distance should make any checkmating attempt impossible. I actually managed to draw it first try against the engine so it might not even be that hard to hold. Interestingly 2 bishops + knight vs rook is winning (by tablebase), though it can take 30-40 moves.
@simohayha6031
@simohayha6031 2 года назад
@@eriksteffahn6172 2 bishops plus knight being winning vs a rook isn't surprising. 2 bishops rain hell. It's just the fact that 2 knights can't checkmate that makes it worth trying at appwll

Never had this. Interesting to hear Fine's assessment of 2R:2 minors as a win, I'd expect there are quite a few exceptions. What I did once have, though with pawns on the board, was four minors vs two rooks. Position was not in my favor when it occurred though, and I lost a piece early and eventually my opponent won; it was a rapid game and I was already somewhat down on time so yeah. No way to analyze and I probably missed a lot.

Interesting game! I was just wondering, at 9:09 in the video, the black king "can" capture the knight, as the knight defending it is pinned. Is there any rule to prevent that? Never really seen this situation before I think. I'm guessing because white would capture your king before you can capture white's king with your rook (if capturing kings was a thing), it is illegal to do so as it would hypothetically result in an immediate loss?

It’s illegal, because theoretically whites knight could capture. Just think of chess as capturing their king first, but the game ends one move before. So white would capture blacks king first before the rook captures the white king

It looks like it's wildly dependent on the position and who has the move, but the queen is advantaged; ballparking in my head looking at tablebases, with the KBNN on the move it's about 50% draws, 35% queen wins and 15% piece wins; with KQ on the move it looks like about 60% queen wins and 35% draws?
