I used to watch the Midnight Special, it was one of the best venues to watch bands perform live and to evaluate whether or not to purchase concert tickets when the bands came to our geographic area. It was a good resource to view bands performing live, and we could frequently see them perform more than just two songs like on some other shows like on the Ed Sullivan Show, and many of the other variety shows. Another great show was Don Kirshner’s, which is where I first saw Peter Frampton perform live. It’s too bad that there currently are no shows on regularly that are similar nowadays. When MTV started up, there were often live shows being broadcast late in the evenings, many of them were punk rock performances, but they were also live, however, that didn’t go on much more than a year, once there were enough music videos to show around the clock, 24/7, unfortunately, there are very few music videos shown on MTV anymore, instead they have reality shows broadcasting much of the day and night, and very little music videos at all. Thank you for sharing this video and posting it on RU-vid! Please have an excellent and awesome day! ☀️✨🎸
Damn. Bands like Foghat, GFR, UFO, and so many more from the 70s just baffle me. What an amazing decade for rock n roll. I’m quite confident saying that we will never experience this talent and creativity ever again at this level.
Absolutely not you forgot Rush and many others from the 70s that were freaking incredible the music today sucks let me repeat the music today sucks there's no such thing as good music now
saw 'em in '77 at Rupp Arena Lex. KY - 2nd row - my cousin caught a drum stick and I got "part" of a towel -- they were - and still are - one of the best
You should have seen them in concert! You would be exhausted halfway thru their set, and smile saying to yourself, I still have 1 to 2hrs left! They were a "Jam Band"
@@65Wildkat I saw them in 81? I think `81, and they were not as good as I thought. I listened to Foghat, Live! 1 mill. times back then and maybe had too much expectation, as I was only 14. They might just have had a bad night. God knows I have had gigs gone to shit. You get off stage and are ashamed to hang at the bar and talk with anyone.
This is the short made-for-tv version, check out "Live". The only band I saw more times than Foghat was Frank Zappa! I couldn't tell you how many times I saw Foghat as the opening band, only to blow the headliners away!
Foghat was an excellent band...the thing about the 70's was that a band like this wasn't even among the top 10...glad I was a teenager in those days...
They were in my top 3, with Zep and the Stones. And Humble Pie, for 4. 😊 But I couldn't afford tickets for for the first 2, and saw Foghat and Humble Pie, every time they came to Detroit, thru the 70s.
Saw Foghat 8 times. But, I saw everyone at least a half dozen times. That's all we did.I only saw the Stones twice and wish I'd seen them many more times,75,80. Zep 4 times, Sabbath 4 times, first time in 70. In fact, what's got me thinking of all this is that I found a box of ticket stubs. It's a trip down memory lane. Going all the way to 1968,The Jefferson Airplane, The Grateful Dead and It's A Beautiful Day. I could write a book.
I'm 70 years old and I remember when they came on the scene! Saw them for their Fool For The City tour! FANTASTIC Show great sound HIGH Energy!!!! They knew HOW to Rock! Underated!
Same here, Chicago. Thing is our "group" had the entire seating area behind the stage reserved, incl. a bus where electric wine was served on the way to the show. We we're so close to the stage... I have some pics from the show. It was quite a memorable experience. Rock on.
@@cathyt502 God, They did a version of Sweet Home Chicago on album Stone Blue. It was fantastic. There will never be another Lonesome Dave or Rod "The Bottle" Price.
Had a 69 Chevelle 396, 4-speed Muncie Rock Crusher, 12 bolt posi rear end. Yep! 8-track tape deck with 6x9 Jenson Tri-Ax speakers in the rear. I remember having to put a match book (I doubt younger people even know what a book of matches are.) under the tape so it would play right, LOL! Those were the days I'll never forget, good times!
Foghat's first live album is probably the greatest live album ever. The live version of this is incredible. These guys were a very underrated band.I own most of their albums and they have so many great songs that just rock.Their song Stone Blue is a masterpiece.
@@AnthonyWilliams-ot1yk So true! I blew a Hispanic chicks mind the other day. I was in my favorite hole-in-the-wall Mexican restaurant, and they had Spanish music playing. One song came on (one I'd never heard), and I told her that that was Carlos Santana. She said no, it is La Banda (Spanish word, Spanish word). I said that's Carlos Santana. She said no, and repeated the bands name. I said it may be, but that's Carlos Santana on guitar. She took her phone and held it up, then showed me, and it said "La Banda (Spanish word, Spanish word) WITH Carlos Santana! She asked me how I knew, and I told her I knew Santana's style - something you can't tell from most bands these days. She gave me some free guacamole!
With Tone Stevens on BASS killer i got the pleasure of seeing them on the "Return of the Boogie Men " Tour at Mama Kins in Boston i stood on floor in the middle when they built the song up then all hell broke loose . i still have goose bumps
I never dove deep into Foghat. They opened a few concerts that I went to in the early 80's and know their hits but may want to check out some full albums if anyone has some recs.
I remember Christmas evening 1975 and these guys were on Midnight Special. They lowered the sign that said Foghat. When they did my Uncle said oh look a band named Fagot. Lol. I will never forget that.
They've been erased by corrupt leaders, insanity and perversion, and all manner of wickedness. Jesus is our only hope. Music, dogs, and all the other good stuff on earth can only get us temporary pleasure.
@@mr.d.572 I had a '59 Jr. , never had problems with it going out of tune more than any other guitar. The P90 is a awesome pickup, and one is all you need.
Agreed, problems were solved with fist fights not guns, you had people getting high & drunk but no crack zombies roaming the streets, kids would hit the road and hitch and pack across the country, where today being homeless is a life style career choice, living in filth on the streets. I could go on an on. 70's were pure and fun, people still had innocence and wonder for the world we live in, not contempt and self absorption. People lived their life in the present and their surroundings, not detached and pre-occupied with personal "devices". You have to have lived it know the real difference from then until now. I feel sorry for kids and young adults of today to grow up in what society had become.
@@bigmamajama2829 I agree with what your saying but life wasn't all wine and roses back then. You had Nixon, the Vietnam war. the Commies etc. I remember being told to hide under our desks in case the the Commies decided to Nuke us. Same shit different story is what it boils down to. :-) Peace
The band were pretty much ignored here in their native UK but thankfully our US cousins gave them the attention they deserved. On storming form here. Their 'Fool for the City' album is a classic and it was a pity that 'Foghat Live' only ran to a single LP. 70s music is the gift that keeps on giving.
I was 13 when I first saw them on this show. I had to keep it low so I would not wake anyone up....50 yrs later, I can play it loud and no wake anyone up........I miss the old days...
This is fucking awesome!! I remember in February 2000 when Dave Peverett had passed. I was 28 years old and in active duty Air Force stationed at Prince Sultan Air Base in Al Kharj, Saudi Arabia. That Monday night, I had just gotten off work at the Fuels Receiving Facility. Bus came to pick me and my fellow troops up and take us back to the dorms. Bus had "Slow Ride" playing on the Musak system. After the song ended, the deejay came on and announced Dave's passing. Really great to see everybody so young here and just jamming away on the guitars and drums! RIP Dave and say "Hi" to my mom for me. 🎸
God what a great arrangment; especially how the twin guitar trade riffs until they gradually join into a single joint riff. Also it's hilarious at how bored the audience seems. They must have been expecting the Carpenters.
I read a message from a guy who was an actual audience member during filming of some of the Midnight Special shows. He said the audience was instructed to sit and be quiet during the filming. Glad for that! Can you imagine hearing screaming clapping fans instead of great music?! Someone had their thinking cap on way back then!
The Boogie Men!!! My absolute favorite band from this era, finally got to see them in concert in 1979 in Corpus Christi, TX- hell of a great party! The opening act wasn't bad either- Judas Priest!
I think that was the year they cancelled a show in Houston because of a hurricane. They rescheduled for but I missed the announcement. Still have 4 unused tickets...
Wow, some very early stuff here. I was very lucky to see them in 1999 with the BIG 4 still with us. Excellent concert it was. Foghat is one of those bands where you have to see them LIVE to fully appreciate them.
@@francus7227 I saw them in a small theater. Probably maybe 1,500 of us. Their performance was outstanding. Wasn't the smallest in attendance for a concert I have been to. That would be YES where there was only about 125 of us in a casino bar. I had my own table ten feet in front of the band with nobody around me. Bizarre!
@@whiteninja9481 There's a DAMN good reason you never see a Yes cover band. I saw them in 1985 in an arena on ACID.... It was great. No opening act. They played a Buggs Bunny cartoon with Bugs on ether..... It was like they knew we had dropped. I also saw Jeff Beck in a 3,000 seat amphitheater that was 1/2 full, but 1/2 empty is probably more appropriate.. a musical CRIME but not as agregious as Yes with 125 people.... WOW.
@@francus7227 Between most songs I was talking with Jon from my seat! I could have spit gum on him--I was THAT close. It was during the Ascension album tour. Awesome stuff! Steve Howe and Chris were scary close to me too. At a different Michigan casino, I had the same thing happen with The John Entwistle Band. About 150 to 200 of us were there; we all thought it was bizarre! I had the BEST ticket available! I stood right in front of John the whole night! I asked for a pick and he handed me one. I was tossed a drum stick by the drummer and a guitar pick from the guitarist. All I needed was a keyboard key for the Grande Slam, but no-can-Dew! Fun times! Both tickets were less than thirty dollars. :)
@@francus7227 Had a chance to see Jeff Beck, as well, in Detroit outdoors. He only filled about half the place. Sounded good, but the people were not much into him.
This makes me really miss the 70's.. i caught these guys in like 79-80 in detroit. My first real concert. Had main floor, first row, second section . Awesome!!
the first rock concert my older brother tooke me too was Foghat UFO Rush all together and I was blown away! You'd never see so many great bands in one night these days!
Thank you Midnight Special. You've given me the opportunity to see and hear my favorite bands. Bands (at 29 yrs young) I'd otherwise never have the opportunity to see. Best channel ever ❤️
Saw them open for Aerosmith in 73 or so at the Boston Garden, we had back stage passes and watched from the side of the stage!! Unbelievable Wow I was 11 years old my dad was a friend of Steve Tyler , talk about a double bill !! Once in a lifetime show 👍
