In which John reveals why he thinks Batman kind of sucks, both as a billionaire and as a Superhero. A couple edits:
1. Obviously some crime is caused by horrible sociopathic monsters.
2. Bruce Wayne has done SOME constructive stuff for Gotham. Like he built a mass transit system, although it was of course later destroyed. But also, to be fair, Bruce Wayne did many other things for Gotham in some of the comics series, including funding hospitals and schools and the police department. (NOT IN THE MOVIES, THOUGH.)
3. I did not acknowledge the existence of my massive nose zit in this video. That was a mistake, and I apologize for it.

John. Maybe this point doesn't come across well enough in the movies, but I'd suggest reading The Dark Knight Returns if you haven't already. Not only is it just an awesome book, but it makes very clear that Batman has SERIOUS mental issues related to the death of his parents. No, he doesn't use his wealth in the most reasonable way, nor does he ever fix all of Gotham's problems - but that's what makes his character so fascinating! That's what makes his stories so interesting! Also, to go a bit off topic... Spider-Man didn't choose to be Spider-Man? Even in the movies the first thing he does with his powers is use them for personal gain, and it's only after the death of Uncle Ben that he CHOOSES to use his powers for the good of others. WITH GREAT POWER COMES GREAT RESPONSIBILITY! The whole god damn thing is about choosing to be good! Why do I care so much about superheroes.

Bruce wayne has gave money to schools, hospitals, orphan houses and the GCPD (gotham city police department) in the comics. Wayne even had to fit in the bill after Gotham under went a earthqauke in The No Man's Land Storyline. The only thing Wayne hasn't sent money on is the military (something luthor usually handles) since he doesn't like weapons. I remember in the animated series where he is walking down the street of gotham giving money to the poor but more and more people just came up to him and he started crying since he knew money wasn't going to help the city alone....SWEAR TO ME!!!!!!

Why is it Batman's job to clean up the city in the first place through use of his wealth? You have to understand why he became obsessed with fighting crime in the first place, his parents were shot right in front of him...a tragedy like that doesn't motivate you to clean up the city through use of money or anything like that, it, along with your fear of bats, motivates you to fight the poverty of Gotham personally, because that is what happened to YOU, something personal. Also, people give Batman shit about not killing his villains when really, it isn't his problem, it should be Gotham's justice system who executes decisions regarding the life and death of their prisoners. Batman is a man who's sole purpose in life is to stop crime by capturing and deterring those who commit crime from committing crime again, he doesn't have any legal duty to do what he does, he's not legally obligated to murder the criminals he hands over to the Gotham Police, he's not an agent of the government who's job description requires him to kill those who he apprehends, however, it is the legal obligation of the Gotham Judiciary System to execute criminals/enhance imprisonment faculties and defenses when it is deemed necessary, so why is Batman blamed when the LEGAL & even moral(as they claim) responsibility for the punishment of criminals falls under the jurisdiction of Gotham's justice system? There are other billionaires within the Batman universe that are committed to cleaning up crime whose lives have been unaffected in the least bit, I wouldn't say Wayne is completely free of criticism when it comes to charitable endeavors(if you read the comics Bruce Wayne does use his wealth to better the city, but the wealth is USELESS because the city is so corrupt it is utterly useless to try and funnel money into a specific charity when the money always ends up being funneled into the pockets of some corrupt congressman or lawyer) but you have to understand Bruce's past and what drove him to become such a psychologically damaged child who never got over his obsession to fight crime. We are arguing over a fictional character in a fictional universe, though.

@LynxChan
@LynxChan 10 лет назад
I think Batman works if you keep him in the category of psychologically damaged "hero". Someone with good intentions but whose trauma and obsession prevent them from being effective in their goals. The problem is that the child version of Batman, the first we usually encounter, is sanitized and presented as a clean hero, which doesn't really make sense. Both Batmans exist in the popular imagination, but only the tormented "dark" Batman is coherent as a character and, non-intuitively, is actually easier to sympathize with, or at least pity.
@geass11
@geass11 10 лет назад
TheBobBrom If people consider him a hero, then he's a hero to them. As it's a subjective matter. Having said that, the movie 'The Dark Knight' takes the correct approach IMO. You shouldn't consider him as a 'hero', rather just a 'vigilante' who fights for 'good' being a 'protector' to reduce crime.

If you own a flotation device and pass someone drowning in a lake, you have a moral obligation to throw it in the water. Failure to do so may not be illegal, but it sure is immoral. If you are obscenely wealthy, to a degree that even donating great sums of money will still leave you obscenely wealthy, then your money is a flotation device for thousands of people, and you are morally obligated to help.

A3roboy That's an disingenuous comparision, as yes... You and I are relatively much richer then the people in Sudan, but we can't possibly give as large of a percentage to charity and still live a decent life that a billionaire could. Say if I gave 50% of everything I earn to charity, I would soon be a charity case myself. But if someone super rich gave 50% or even more, they could go on living the super rich life JUST as before. Money loses utility the more you have, as unless you go into utter vanity projects (literal gold cars or whatever) you rather soon run out of stuff to buy and use it for. I give as much as I can, which is not a large percentage of my income, but I NEED the rest of it to live a normal western life. Bill Gates gave away like 90% of his wealth and still have more then he probably ever needs left. Presumably Batman (and Tony Stark) would be able to do the same. Now to go back to Batman, in canon he actually totally does that. It just doesn't actually help, cause if Gotham were actually fixed, there would be no more Batman stories.
@RobertoBlake

Batman as Bruce Wayne, does a lot of good via the charities of the Thomas and Martha Wayne Foundations and The Thomas and Martha Wayne Youth Homes, and the Halfway House that he specifically setup for his rogues who want to reform. He even ensures that reformed criminals get entry level positions and Wayne industries where he can keep an eye on them. Bruce Wayne also has fought for the environment multiple times and Wayne Industries actually is a very progressive and eco-friendly company (something even Poison Ivy admits). Gotham's core problems have to do with corrupt politicians and a corrupt police system. Even with Wayne donating generously to the police departments a lot of those funds are misappropriated due to the corruption. There is also the problem of the mob, and then you have the rich super villains. Gotham also has a "culture" of corruption, and the mob and super villains just breed more tragedy. The only version of Gotham that is not riddled with crime is whenever the Justice Lords become dictators and impose their imperial brand of Justice on the entire world. Which just demonstrates the sad reality despite being a fictional story. While one man or woman can make a difference, no matter what means they use there is a limit to what they can accomplish as long as there are lines they won't cross. Batman actually could save Gotham, but he would have to cross a lot of lines to do it. He would have to neutralize his entire rogues gallery and likely execute all the gangsters and corrupt politicians and cops for Gotham to have a chance, and he is not willing to go that far. Even his contingency plan to neutralize the Justice League if they went Rogue stopped short of killing them. And that is why Batman can't save Gotham, he won't sacrifice his humanity to do it, and that is the price he would have to pay, that is part of what the story and tragedy of Batman is supposed to be about. Fighting a losing battle because doing anything else would simply be letting evil win.

Cap. Orange Soghda McGuffiepans we should keep in mind that he is mainly going off of the movies. so in his defense, alot of what he said is legit. ofcourse if we all wanted to we could find tons of comic sources to disprove his argument but that is not what is important. to me this video is trying to make us look at the hero we addore objetively. if he has all this money why doenst he start with the schools and poor neigborhoods and help them out directly instead of fighting crime. then when we realize that we see that if that is something batman can do, its something that can be done in the real world as well since batmans only real power is his wealth, we should be looking at our own gorvement, community leaders, and ourselves try to use the wealth we have to make and build a better world. for us all

Batman _isn't real_. It's fantasy. It has nothing to do with "what we value as people". I like violent and dark stories, but that doesn't mean I "value violence as a human being". Batman works and exists in his own universe. That's why we don't have an _actual_ Batman in the real world, and why _actual_ billionaires like Bill Gates do donate a lot of their obscene wealth to charities. I really love Batman as a character, and it has absolutely nothing to do with him being a billionaire. Him having the wealth is just a story building tool to make his character possible.

I dont want to argue all your points, but i do really believe that fiction represents reality and our real-life values. Of course fiction is, well fictious and a lot is completely made up but there always is some core based in reality and most pieces of literature (or movies, whatever, just fiction in general) depict the values and beliefs of that time period pretty well

Pretty sure that a culture's stories represent that cultures values. I mean, it'd be extremely hard to believe that a culture would produce volume upon volume of stories detailing virtuous and grace and etc, yet also be indifferent to the meaning of those stories.

I also love Batman. However, of course he has everything to do with what we value as people. He saves lives and acts as a paragon of virtue. You're right when you say that a value of violent entertainment doesn't mean that you value violence, but it certainly means that you relate to it, crave it, and ultimately condone it. We'd all like peace, but recognize that violence has its place, in policy *and* entertainment.

You've got Batman all wrong. First point I'd like to make is that judging people for their philanthropy makes you a bad person. It's expecting people to use their money and resources and time in the way you want them to, and it's throwing your morals onto them. Second point is that Bruce Wayne is really just as philanthropic with his money as any real life billionaire. Third point is that Batman isn't living out a crime fighting fantasy. His life was consumed by revenge. There's deeper philosophical meaning behind it all. He inadvertently created most of his arch enemies. The story of Batman is a warning about the cost of letting revenge consume you, about Bruce Wayne's psychological instability, and and about the blurred line between justice and evil. This isn't meant to be a happy story. You have seriously undersold one of the most well written hero stories of all time.
@MayhemMessiah

I don't think most of us are meant to aspire being Batman. Robin, Nightwing, Batgirl? Probably, because they are in it genuinely because they want to help. Batman is a psychopath and is presented as such in all but the most light-hearted children's series. I think John fundamentally misunderstands Batman: He's a cool guy much in the same way Walter White is. A badass, no-nonsense, incredibly focused man, but ultimately a very flawed and broken one as well. Even then, as other have mentioned, Wayne Enterprises has done a ton of philanthropic work to help Gotham, it's just fell flat because you CANNOT fix a fundamentally corrupt society by throwing money at it, not while the bad guys hold such immense power over the morals of society.

Whenever someone has a difference in opinion with me, I resist the urge to tell them they're wrong. I believe two people can look at the same thing and have two completely different and yet completely valid and completely true interpretations. But the thing is a youtube video and its arguments based on false premises and misinformation hasn't made me this angry since Zeitgeist. I haven't read the other comments yet because I'm blinded by rage so I don't know who else has said what I'm going to say. In short: I love you, but you're completely wrong. But I understand you're a full-grown and very busy man with two kids and a book/internet career and you haven't had the time to watch things like Batman the Animated Series and The Justice League even tough they quite possibly have the most well writen stories to ever involve comic book characters. So you don't know. Let's start at the beginning. The number one thing that sets Batman apart from other superheroes and makes him great is the fact that he didn't get bitten by a science spider and wasn't born an alien or given superpowers in anyway. This isn't important because you can say "Look at him keeping up with demigods as a mortal man" it's important because he, unlike basically any other superhero made the choice to be a hero. He easily could have been a normal guy, he easily could have taken a passive stance to improving the world. Instead, he saw a need and decided to give every ounce of himself to meeting that need. Look, I don't know if intent means more than action but it's a very important message to say "in order to do great things you need not be born with a special advantage. A person is not good by chance. A person is good by choice." Batman makes that choice every day and works HARD for his goal every day even though it's a bit of a Sisyphean struggle of preventing crime from killing people's parents. ...or people in general. I think you, David Foster Wallace, the Dalai Lama, and countless others would agree that if that was it, there's a lot of heroism in daily making the conscious choice and continued effort to do good in the world. Point two: Villains and crime. You mentioned that batman villains are terrible which is the kind of incorrect (arguably so) statement that can spawn another huge literary discussion. Then you said crime isn't caused by Evil, but disenfranchisement etc. and I say THAT'S ONE OF THE MAIN POINTS OF THE ENTIRE BATMAN MYTHOS! That's why in batman origin story, when it works best, his parents are killed by a random nameless and scared mugger who's never seen again. It's why in every iteration of Batman (except for the Tim Burton movies I could/have/probably will some time in my future go on the most passionate rage rants about) his main character trait is that he doesn't kill his villains. Many times you'll see people saying he doesn't kill because that's the only thing keeping him from being a villain himself. In a way that's true but, to add an extra layer to that, I see another reason. The first message of Batman was the importance of conviction, hard work and choices, the second message is there are no throw away people. Anyone could potentially get caught in a bad situation and do bad things, they might even get carried away and keep doing bad things for a long time but they're still people and none of them is a lost cause. In Batman's eyes, no person is broken beyond repair. Sure Batman beats the snot out of people to stop them from robing banks and killing kids, etc. but Bruce Wayne actually devotes a lot of time and energy toward rehabilitation. You can even see evidence of this in the fact that when he talks to his rogues, he refers to them by the names of the people they are and not the monsters they believe themselves to be. And Batman:tAS constantly shows the complexity and humanity of Batman's villains. Bad things happen to them The only exception to this is The Joker who acts as a symbol of the entire struggle a representation of general chaos and evil in the universe completely unaffected by appeals to humanity, nameless, and without empathy. Grinning white face mirroring the unyielding white whale and the apathetic great white wall of cow. The people manipulated by The Joker are to show that people are not evil and only manipulated by it. The Joker is the last obstacle toward curing the sickness that infects all of humanity. In some ways Batman is just a Jesus story. Point three: Money Why doesn't Bruce Wayne give his money to charities and schools, or the police force, and toward building low income housing. The short answer is he does. I don't know how much research you did, but there are three points in Bruce Wayne's description. Billionare. Playboy. Philanthropist. That's what he does. he has money, has sex, gives money, gives...more sex. And then he's Batman. But here's the thing. When Bruce Wayne comes home from traveling the world and learning darn near everything, the police force is INCREDIBLY corrupt (I know you saw Batman Begins at least). They're the LAPD, they're Ferguson, they're New York stop and frisk. Gotham City is the worst parts of Detroit, New York, LA, and Jersey. Funding is not going to fix the police force in that situation. It would probably just make things worse. At the very least, it would make him look like a horrible person for giving millions to the worst police force in America. Let's not forget while Bruce is waiting for legislations to get passed, schools to be built, crooked judges, politicians, and cops to get fired, and reform to happen, people are Dying. In the street. They don't have time to sit around and wait for the Gotham City Council to fix things or the mayor. The people in charge don't have a lot of incentive to create reform. They're rich, safe and happy. That's where Batman comes in. Not just to solve crimes the police can't but to get things moving where motion is resisted. The truth in Batman's world is the same as the truth in ours, you can't just throw money at a problem and hope it goes away. You need individuals to take action. You need people to do the things that need to be done. The reason Bruce devotes years to learning things like how to talk to people and how legal systems work, and martial arts, and all sorts of ways to better himself (unlike stupid freaking awful Iron Man!) and the reason he loses his utility belt in so many stories is message number three of Batman: money isn't enough. It's not a panacea and it's not a miracle item. It's a supplement. What's truly powerful is the human will. Point four: Thinking Globally I mean come on, John Green this is obvious. Of course he's all for helping issues around the world and does so (as I touched on earlier. Plus The Justice League is on Netflix in its entirety and it's not that long. You get to see batman devoting all sorts of resources outside of Gotham). What you've seen of Batman, no doubt, is the early years and that's the thing, when you're Alpha testing a product, you use a small sample size near by. You've got to see how it works, if it works. You can't just try to save the whole world right of the bat (I'm sorry), at this point we don't even know what the facebook is yet. You have to start by saving home. Part five: the core and the individual. What you say is the question at the core of the Batman story is why we celebrate the vigilantic ambitions of individual billionaires when everything is really done in collaboration. I'll lead into my answer with another question. Is that really what's going on in Batman's story? I don't know if you knew this, but Batman actually has more sidekicks than any other super hero (unless you count Professor X, but let's face it, the X-men are really complicated in superhero terms. also in comicbook terms in general). Batman was even the super hero to have a sidekick. And that started only two years after his first publication. Since then he's had about 6 robins, a couple of batgirls, black bat, batwoman, a couple huntresses, Azrael(which was sort of a bad move), and the sons of batman (who were once a violent street gang from The Dark Knight Returns but got converted to the cause in the spirit of point number one). On top of that crucial members of his team are Commissioner Gordon, Alfred, Lucius Fox, Catwoman, The Riddler eventually, and the whole dang Justice League. In truth Batman is not a story of one guy against the world at all. Or one guy against Gotham. He has as many collaborations as a hero could possibly without having to share a bill on the title. But that happens sometimes too. The last batman message I'll highlight here is that batman as a literary character/symbol and the intent of the character as a person was never to be a one man show, but to start a movement. He's there to send a message to the people of Gotham City that they don't have to be afraid and oppressed and that they don't have to sit around and wait for things to change. They don't need super powers and they don't need Superman to save them. They themselves can go out and make a difference. There's that TED talk about starting a movement that outlines the same kind of process. It starts with one guy willing to do something crazy. He shows people it's possible, he shows people it's safe, he welcomes the newcomers and then it's not about him anymore. Bruce Wayne never could have done what he did without Henri Ducard, and without Lucious Fox, Harvey Dent, or Alfred Pennyworth. He couldn't have even done it without Dick Grayson. His mission probably won't be complete until long after he's dead and definitely won't finish without the help of a lot of other people. That's what Batman's really about at his core both in our world and his, a call to action. Even in Grant Morrison's writing that I hate so much, there's Batman Incorporated in which Bruce Wayne decides to fund hundreds of Batmen around the world who want to save their cities. It's not in any way a one man show. But just like Michael Jackson's Man in the Mirror says, to make a change, you have to start with yourself. The cool thing is Gotham gets better. It happens slowly because real change is always slow and because DC wants to keep a good cash cow going as long as possible. I guess the real last message is that things can improve even when they seem hopeless. And there's nothing wrong with that. So again, John, I think you're totally wrong, not just in your information but I think you love batman and you don't even know it yet.

John Green you are awesome, but on this topic you're not correct. In the comics Batman is a huge philanthropist actually, and that's what we mean by Batman right, not some VERY poor Hollywood disfigurement of the character? Additionally, there is a lot of crime that has nothing to do with education, lack of job opportunities, or poverty, some of the worst kinds have nothing to do with that. "Some men just like to watch the world burn". Also, in the DC universe, there are villains that are so powerful the police stand no chance of stopping them. Criminals like Clayface for example. Sure Batman could fund high tech toys for the police, but with all of the corruption in Gotham, those high tech toys would end up in the hands of criminals. The reason that Gotham never gets better is because the comics need to keep going. They can't have Batman fix the problem and call it a day. He needs to be around for all generations to be inspired by, and boy does Batman inspire =)

In truth, Gotham is the way it is because Bruce Wayne is greedy. There are so many people he could help with his money and resources but instead he devotes it all to his own selfish needs. True, Batman does save people from time to time but it is a secondary result to his true reason for being Batman. Vengeance. Bruce Wayne wants to be Batman so he can hurt the people that hurt him. But he can’t do that (many stories have been written of the killer the Waynes being either unknown or already dead) so he beats up on substitutes, briefly eliminating the pain of his parents’ deaths with every punch. In truth, Batman wants Gotham to be a crime filled cesspool. He needs it to be a haven for criminal activity. Because if there is no crime in Gotham then there is no need for a Batman. And without a Batman you are left with a sad lonely boy with too much time and money on his hands.

but.... Bruce Wayne does give to charity, has his own charity for kids and developing nations, AND takes time and money to be a bad ass super hero. Recently he also started a non-profit organization of multi-national Batmen called Batman Inc. Batman is not Gotham local any more, Batmen are heros for all! Honestly, after reflecting, I feel I am upset that the current wealthy people are JUST giving and starting charities. With their resources, they should also dedicate a portion of their time and earnings into becoming a super hero. I think that's the real moral of this story :)

In which John Green reveals why he thinks Batman kind of sucks, both as a billionaire and as a Superhero. A couple edits: 1. (NOT IN THE MOVIES, THOUGH.) 3. I did not acknowledge the existence of my massive nose zit in this video. That was a mistake, and I apologize for it.

In defense of John 1. Very very little crime is actually caused by sociopaths. 1.2% present signs of sociopathy, but only a fraction of these are 'criminal' sociopaths, who engage in violent or abusive behaviour for kicks. Most socially integrate as that is the more logical thing to do (citation: Flipnosis, K. Dutton). 2. Sociologists would argue that feelings of safety, connectedness, and productivity/worth would be what should be focused on to reduce crime (or improving social and personal capital, whichever, there are many ways to phrase the basic argument). 3. I didn't notice.

Bruce Wayne funding law enforcement (rather than his DIY vigilante approach) is problematic because of widespread corruption. He (sort of) tried to do it properly (albeit in a half-assed way) in one of the movies by approaching a mob boss and learnt pretty quickly that if he openly tries to take down the 'forces of evil' then he'll most likely be killed on the street. Essentially anything he does in terms of funding public causes, if it's not in the best interests of the mob bosses and baddies, could lead to a price on his head. Hence why he goes to such lengths to just pretend to be a regular douche-bag billionaire when wearing his Bruce Wayne costume.

But John, Bruce Wayne does use his money to better the state of Gotham. His parent, just by being rich, were able to highhandedly stave off economic depression in the city for over decade before they died, they did it through charitable organizations and privately funded but publicly available infrastructure, things that the Wayne foundation continued to do throughout Bruce's life. It's not that he is either a good billionaire using his money to best suit the needs of the greatest number of people, or he is Batman, but instead, he is both.

***** Wow...this is a crazy thread. We didn't pay anything to make the TFiOS movie because we didn't make the TFiOS movie. Also, it cost waaay more than 12,000 to make. Movies cost millions of dollars to make...even cheap ones. But we didn't make that movie (nor did we make any money off that movie.) We also didn't spend any money visiting Ethiopia...that was paid for by the Bill and Melinda Gates foundation, which is basically just a name for "All the money that Bill Gates used to have and is now administered by a foundation." But, yes, all of the money from the P4A went to charities. And yes, the Waynes did great things before they died...but Bruce didn't really pick up that particular torch. Of course, one can understand why. Depending on what universe we're in, Bruce Wayne is a pretty sick, sad dude...I don't know that John knows a lot about him, but the popular mythology which is understood and believed by pretty much everyone in our culture is what John is getting at...that somehow that sick, sad worldview has its advantages. That Bruce, in ruining his life for vengeance and vigilanteism is somehow in the right...that as long as his values "right" he can forge his anger into action and don't we all wish that Batman really was real...or better yet that WE were Batman, so we could forge the world into what we know it should be. That's a creepy vision...and it's a creepy worldview to submit to, even if it's easy to do so.

Honestly this argument brings up an issue I didn't consider before... Why does Bruce even HAVE a secret identity? He's a fricking millionaire, he's not going to fly under the radar just because the criminals don't know he's Batman. He has no superpowers so he has no risk of being dissected or extensively studied. He has a very small network of allies and all of them work in crime and crime fighting already, so he has no innocent civilians friends he doesn't want targeted. Heck I think if he gave most of his money to the law, they'd even let him wear his bat costume while joining the rank and file officers.

I would argue, despite what the brothers themselves seem to think, that they aren't actually arguing or even disagreeing with each other all that much in these videos. Hank is talking about what Batman, as a fictional character, means for those of us in the real world who write, consume and enjoy his stories, in whatever medium, whereas John is talking about why Batman's methods and actions would be selfish, irresponsible, misguided and/or ineffective as a means of improving his society and as a use for billions of dollars, if he was in the real world. They both have some great points, which I don't think actually conflict with one another all that much, except for the part about what celebrating Batman says about us. As to that, while I take Hank's point about Batman embodying our desire to personally improve the world, I felt the unspoken implication of his video (or rather the bit that was actually about Batman) was that it is somehow wrong or unproductive to judge fictional characters by real-world standards rather than just by what they represent. I think it's perfectly possible, even preferable, to do both, which is I guess what this whole longwinded comment amounts to.

Sam T Yeah, this is exactly how I feel about it. It's really just two different ways of looking at the character. John is definitely taking the Holden Caulfield approach (which is why so many people are pissed off), while Hank is taking more of the english teacher approach. Personally I find John's interpretation to be more compelling, but from what I've heard in the comments, Batman actually does run some charities in the comic books, just not in the movies. Why do we celebrate "vigilantic" ambitions of individual billionaires? Because more often than not the collaborative efforts of the people fail. This is exemplified in every superhero comic. It is an exercise in catharsis to produce and consume these tales. Batman and his kind are a fantasy for those who see the world as rendered helpless via the misguided notion that social problems can be solved by societies/collaborative efforts/collectives. (I realize this may be blasphemous to those who worship at the altar of the state or the church of Climatology, and I apologize for any offense I may have caused.)

Collaborative efforts don't more often than not fail. Collaboration is a part of life, every day. Every industry, every sport, every discovery was made by people working together. My interpretation of John's words is that Batman lives in some magical world where one man can build a cave headquarters, FBI-grade computer, and various vehicles and maintain, clean, and inspect them without outside aid while one of those two men still has time to run a double life and beat up criminals.

Both John and his brother pay forward the viewpoint by spinning their perspectives, like cotton candy, in to light, fluffy, fun, unhealthy, ultimately destructive fodder for socialist feminists (but I repeat myself), climatologists (members of the church), communists in denial, and the victims of the public school system. Spider man doesn't actually shoot webs naturally in the comics. He shoots them from machines which mount on his wrists. The webbing itself is a fluid that is found in cartridges which he loads on these wrist mounted machines. his other super powers, such as Spider Sense, Super Strength, Super Speed/Agility, ect., are real however. The More You Know! (Also John, on top of his Batman money, Bruce also does support many philanthripist causes. People don't know about his batman money fund. If he didn't publically give back, people would think he was a greedy prick. Not to mention i'm sure Bruce is aware that fighting various super powerful physcos, either the Joker (Who is Awesome and you know it.) or the Penquin ( still like the him, but i can see where you are coming from and to a certian extent agree with you here.) , as basically a freelance super soilder for the Gotham Police Department, is largely an impractical act to begin with. If anything, the whole Batman idea is most likely a result of physcological inflicted guilt and self hatred over him thinking he could have saved his parrents, or finding out who his killer is (If you READ the comics, you might have been aware of The Killing Joke, which provides the widely accepted, although not offical, backstory for the Joker. If you MUST use a movie backstory, the Jack Napier backstory as found in Tim Burton's 1989 BATMAN is also well recived and would explain why he wanted to defeat the joker so much.), although I think that the possibility of him being able to save his parrents and not doing it (Becuase he was a child) keeps awake at night more than who did it, despite that being what is so commonly said by anyone or anything Batman related. He could also just want to do something the aerage person couldn't do, such as raise a internet fundraiser to decrease world suck or go to Africa with Bill Gates to talk about how to further decrease world suck with him. He could just be a really nice person, donating money to his Batman job and charity becuase he is simply nice, wich is common amongst the wealthy such as Bill Gates, John Green (You), Warren Buffet, or the many other countless examples. The final problem with your assesment is, and we are both guilty of this, is going to in depth into a topic such as Batman. This is fiction. None of this will ever happen. some of these things can't happen becuase of the fact that reality would not allow it. Granted, I enjoy going Insanely deep into irrealevant topics as such as this. I had way too much fun writing this response. but i'm not normal. i'm the weird kid at school that, while is fairly liked and well known throughtout my school (we only 600 students here), i'm still known as the weird guy. Actually the animated show did indeed use the web slinger. I vaguely remember at least one episode where it becomes an issue, though admittedly most of the time it was not. Here's an image I could find of it: img3.wikia.nocookie.net/__cb20120719030459/spiderman/images/0/0a/Web-shooter-300x188.png As for the games, at least some games required you to collect cartridges for his slinger. www.mobygames.com/game/windows/spider-man-/reviews/reviewerId,177261/ I believe the games based on the most recent movies are also doing this. As far as I'm aware, the only major Spidey IP to give him web powers are the previous trilogy of films.

There's this thing where people do critical analysis of a text/film/work of art. It doesn't get heated because the character is real, it gets heated because the story is real and because deriving meaning from stories is an essential part of cognizant existence. Batman, Jay Gatsby, and Hamlet don't have to be real for their stories to mean something or for it to be important to make well informed statements about them.

perfectworldbeholder You've never read TFIOS didn't you? John's own author note: "This book is a work of fiction. I made it up. Neither novels nor their readers benefit from attempts to divine whether any facts hide inside a story. Such efforts attack the very idea that made-up stories can matter, which is sort of the foundational assumption of our species. I appreciate your cooperation in this matter." In other words, John believes that fiction matters. And Batman matters to alot of people, he is one of the greatest modern icons of fiction.

To me, the stupidest thing about Batman is his utter refusal to kill the Joker. Honestly, the Joker has killed thousands upon thousands of people by now, yet Batman still whines about how " killing the Joker would be akin to proving him right, that people are more chaotic than orderly inside". If letting an insane criminal with access to nerve gas run free is "orderly", I'd rather bite the bullet and kill the aforementioned insane criminal, instead of waxing lyrical about how it's supposedly more moral to let thousands more die to save face. What's more, how many mooks has the Batman killed to reach the Joker, or the Penguin, or the Catwoman, just to let him/her go? What, are the lives of people with more panels in comic books more worth than the guy whose parents are probably still alive, whom is married with children, who is probably forced into a life of hooliganism due to circumstances beyond his control?
@PhucTranphuctran51

+ScienceAndStuff If it was me I'd also kill the Joker. But objectively I think comics aren't supposed to be like that, they're supposed to be more philosophical (because who would read comic if it was realistic when you can just look at the world). I think the idea is that if the Joker is right - if it was BATMAN who proved him right - then humans are "more chaotic than orderly inside" and it raises the question if humans are worth saving at all. Comics, in my opinion, are more about the clash of ideas than the clash of individuals, about which ideas are worth keeping and which are not, rather than which individuals are worth saving. Furthermore, the ideas have to be consistent: if Batman can reserve the rights to kill Joker, then Superman, judging by his powers, should just become a dictator and control the world, rid it of crimes and calamities and conflicts (which is exactly what happens in Injustice: Gods Among Us, which imo didn't turn out too well). P.s. As far as I know Batman uses non-lethal weapons and is rarely depicted to kill anyone if any.

I don't see what harm there is in him wanting to protect the city he lives in and loves from crime, as opposed to "something bigger". That's basically like saying the policeman that works to protect his city could be doing more good if he were to do something else. Yes there are other bigger things he could do, but you could really say that about almost anybody. People have to pick what they want to do in this world and the fact that he decided he wanted to make the world a little bit better in his own way is definitely what most would call heroic. Just like we also call firefighters heroes, we don't go around saying that "Oh that firefighter could do more good for the world if he had become a brain surgeon." We thank him for doing good deeds for a living. It's very hard to argue that some good deeds are better than others. The world is a better place because overall there are people trying to do all of them. Not people trying to do some of them because those ones are deemed more worthy.

Depends on which comics you read. The bastardized Ultimates series screwed the pooch on where his webs came from, mainly because they got tired of the overused plot device of "Oh no, I'm in real trouble, my web shooters are almost empty!". Then again, his other powers occasionally end up being a bit troublesome, as if I recall one graphic novel had him suddenly unable to turn off his spider sense, to the point that he never slept, couldn't eat, and basically had a mental breakdown.

I would say that objectively speaking, Iron Man is more heroic, or at least practical, than Batman. Why? Using the recent film series for each as the example: Wayne Enterprises/Stark Industries is a multi-billion dollar corporation that produces military hardware for the government. Wayne finds out that his company's stuff is being stolen and used by the bad guys, and stops them by smashing it into the city transportation hub AND primary hydro station. Stark finds out the same thing, and then stops making military hardware for the government, switching to efficient energy production. After a first romp as a hero, heroing around and beating up/blowing up the bad guys, in which Batman cripples and maims several dock workers and or crime gang minions, and Iron Man kills some heavily armed and murderous terrorists, destroys their weapons, and saves the city, the authorities come to investigate, and a chase begins. Wayne escapes by causing thousands of dollars in damage to public and personal property, destroying random cars, and possibly killing some police. Stark escapes, but then goes back to save the life of a pilot who just shot him. Then just flies away. (Yes, a billion dollar aircraft was destroyed, but technically the jet crashed into him.) Upon finding out that his mentor is the bad guy, Wayne causes a crash to kill him, destroying aforementioned transportation and water supply in the process. Upon finding out the same thing, Stark fights to keep all the damage contained to his own factory, then just kills him. And that's just in the first movie.

So you just decided to completely ignore the Justice League, Bruce Wayne's underlying psychological problems, the fact that there are other super-heroes with actual super powers in the DC universe and that comic book artists have a really bad concept of currency (bumping Wayne from a millionaire to a billionaire because of inflation)? But the answer is actually simple: Batman is aesthetically cool, broodiness and silent machismo are always popular & if Wayne ever helped rebuild Gotham, it wouldn't be a neo-Gothic city which would allow for all those well-drawn comics. Short answer: Batman's a terrible b/millionaire because DC needs to sell comics.

That and his fragmented psyche.

The first, the Thomas Wayne Foundation, which gives free medical aid to people in underprivileged parts of Gotham, and awards medical professionals who commit themselves to curing disease. The second, the Martha Wayne Foundation, helps run orphanages, free schools and education for kids who can't afford it, and provides free teachers to people with learning disabilities. And as icing on the cake, the Foundation also sponsors and runs more than two dozen soup kitchens across Gotham City. Maybe in the live action movies, but in the comics being a philanthropist is a big part of his character. It's also a part, though more minor, in the animated adaptations.
@fable23
@fable23 10 лет назад
The obvious answer is that philanthropy, while admirable and worthy, is not terribly kinetic or exciting to watch. I see no reason why Batman shouldn't engage in philanthropy AS WELL AS crimefighting (which he does in the comics) but the sad fact is that in order to keep making movies/comics/video games that are exciting to watch/read/play, Gotham City kind of has to stay terrible so Batman can save it with acrobatics and gadgets. I don't know if that is the fault of Batman or of narrative forces fueled by capitalism, but it's certainly something to consider. The real irony is that the world Batman lives in no longer exists. Cities are safer than ever, organized crime has been gutted of its former potency, and crime in general is at an all time low. Batman is a relic of a past America that he is powerless to improve or escape. And in a very meta way, that makes him almost tragic.
10 лет назад
That might be the case on the US, but there are lots of places in the world where crime is bigger than the law enforcement agencies, moves more money than the government, causes a lot of deaths, economic losses and collateral/direct damage to innocent people and their possessions. We could use a Batman around here.

You think Bruce Wayne engaging in vigilantism instead of donating all his money is enough to save Gotham? First off, he does donate hundreds millions of dollars to charities and foundations in the comics. The problem with your assertion is that you fail to take into account the fact that crime in Gotham consists of more than vandalism and shoplifters. All the charity money in the world won't stop organized crime or murderous sociopaths. These aforementioned people (mobsters, super villains) kill, cheat, and steal because they enjoy doing it. Batman is necessary to keep trash like them in check.

andscifi But that's exactly the problem. Batman's brand of justice is a quick-fix "desperate times call for desperate measures" type of justice. Bruce Wayne is a philanthropist, but if the real world is any measure, you would know that giving money to charity is not enough to solve problems (it certainly helps but isn't enough alone). Also Batman's primary skill is as a detective, He catches elusive criminals for the GCPD because he has resources and capabilities that they don't. He does follow the letter of the law as best he can. He always captures criminals and allows them to be tried, and he only goes after them after they've done something. But his principal flaw is a psychological one. He has an obsession with justice, and he acts that out as the caped crusader. He is the only one he can trust to make good judgement in any situation. He appoints himself as the sole deliverer of moral retribution, because he doesn't really trust anyone else with it. (They already let him down when his parents died). This is really bad in general, but paradoxically He's right. It's shown several times that Batman is usually the least likely to be corrupted, and the most objective out of all of them. Also just think about how few evil incarnations of Batman they are, in almost every alternate universe where some major character is evil. Batman is still good.

Love you John, but you're basically saying "I hate Batman specifically, because comic book superhero universes are really unrealistic." Yeah. They're comics. Absolutely if Bruce Wayne wanted to really help crime he would invest in social justice, but then he wouldn't be able to punch people and monologue about the nature of the city and corruption and crime and stuff. If you want a wholly realistic story about a billionaire saving the world, look at Bill Gates. Then realize that Bill Gates' story, though inspiring, does not great escapism make, and enjoy some Batman.

I agree, I'm not sure what the point is to not like a piece of fiction because it is not realistic the issues and situations of the real world. If he is critiquing the role model of batman that would have to imply that there are people in similar situations as batman when there really are not. Just does not seem like a reasonable critique for some fiction that was made long before most of us were even born.

Bullshit, on so many levels, (and I'm not even a big comic book nerd): - Batman is not just a billionaire, he's a billionaire whose parents got murdered in front of him when he was a small child, that fucks you up. - The Wayne Fundation gives money to a bunch of institutions of Gotham City, including orphanages and the police. He's a pilar of the goddamned community. - Batman is not a hero because he's radioactive, or an alien, he's a hero because he perseveres, and because he wins, which is argubly much more interesting and deserving than those other guys (or at least an interesting metaphor to explore; superman can try and fail, and he's still superman. If Batman fails, he's just a guy in a halloween costume) - Similar to last point, maybe Gotham City is never supposed to improve, but we're still supposed to fight for a better Gotham City, in a "the journey is the destination" sort of way. I'm not saying that human nature is to never improve, but again, it's an interesting metaphor to explore.

And when they say Black Widow is "lame" because she doesn't have powers. She has all the powers batman has, plus probably better intelligence, more training, and she does it without blowing up a few trains in the process and making it painfully clear to the public that superheroes are a danger to the public.

+Emily Black are you talking about the Black Widow like the one in the avengers....cause she is the lamest superhero ever...her and the archer guy. i ask myself wtf are they doing there in a super hero movie. i mean they might as well just join the normal police.

THE16THPHANTOM Again, literally the same powers as batman. and now you have subjected yourself to the force that is my defense of Clint and Natasha. They work for SHIELD, prior to the Winter Soldier, and have a skill set matching the occupation. Being specialists, they have extremely high intellects and a multitude of high level abilites in various skill sets, as well as the ability to aquire new skill sets with ease. They must operate near peak human conditions while still blending in with their enviroment. The Black Widow was trained in the Red Room, a facility designed to train spies, most noteably the Black Widow program, which trained young girls. The KGB and SHIELD both believed her to be the most dangerous agent to come out of the red room. She is a world level acrobat, martial artist, and marksman. She can hack into most computer systems without setting off any alarms or firewalls and can speak at least ten languages fluently. Her intellect puts her on par with Steve Rogers and Hawkeye, and she is widely known as a master interrogator and assassin. She serves as the measuring stick for many of SHIELDs prototypes, for example, Fury commented that he created a lie detector that he HOPED she could not decieve. Hawkeye is an expert marksman, able to fire an arrow at a chitauri and shoot it down without looking. His skills were honed in the circus, where he preformed as a sharp shooter. He was sent after the Black Widow, who as previously stated is extremely dangerous in of herself. He is an expert pilot and gymnast. He has been shown to be capable of holding his own against the Black Widow in hand to hand combat, which speaks for itself, and is an expert tactician. He speaks Itallian and English fluently and does all of this despite being 80% deaf. (at least in the comics.) Now tell me that they would serve better in the police force. I'm listening.

THE16THPHANTOM they did play pretty vital roles in the avengers movie, too. Loki wouldn't have gotten nearly as far as he did without hawkeye and and widow was able to interrogate loki, the God of tricks and mischief, and was the one to shut the portal.

Mr Green; the Wayne foundation gives tones of the money to at risk youth, the homeless, the poor, building schools and hospitals and heaps of other stuff. But Bruce is just one man. The same goes for Stark; he redirected his whole company into making technology to improve the quality of life for everyone.

Interesting. If Bruce Wayne were a real person with billions, most of his "money" would be tied up in assets at a company that employs thousands of people, from professionals to janitors, which in turn affords them a living wherein they are able to feed their families. But no. We must "kind of hate" Batman because he doesn't divert his wealth in a manner that is righteous enough by our own arbitrary standards*. No matter what, we have to fixate ourselves on the money of other people, and come to the determination that if only we were as rich as them, we would be so much more noble than they are. *Note that Batman was a guy in need of some serious therapy. His parents were brutally killed in front of him at a young age. The fact that he (as an unnurtured youth with billions of dollars) manages to go after the bad guys instead of being one of the bad guys is itself a compelling story.

Even considering that Bruce Wayne is fictional and that he cannot give _actual_ dollars to _actual_ charity; Bruce Wayne also has chosen not to give _fictional_ dollars to _fictional_ charity. The charities he does eventually give to are historic preservation trusts (in the Batman Beyond universe) that are used to self-interestedly preserve the theater where his parents were killed. Bruce Wayne is a selfish prick. :/

You're judging Batman on the metric of what a sane person would do in Bruce Wayne's situation. Bruce Wayne is insane. He's not really even Bruce Wayne anymore; he's Batman and he pretends to be Bruce on occasion when it suits his insane crusade. Bruce died in that alley with his parents and Batman is just this horrible spirit of vengeance in a mortal man's body. Even Superman called him the most dangerous man on earth.

This is only true of some interpretations of Batman. In particular this sounds very much like Frank Miller's version, which is pretty much unique to Frank Miller. But Batman *DOES* improve Gotham. The whole reason why he becomes Batman is that Gotham is in bad shape. The collective community of police are corrupt and have given into the idea that things in Gotham are bad and won't get better. Batman says no. Batman makes a stand to change the way Gotham can look. Yes, he could do more to better equip the police force, but as we've seen IRL in Ferguson, and fictionally in Captain America: Winter Soldier, **SPOILER ALERT** largely equipped bodies of defense can become corrupt and use that equpment against those they originally intended to protect. Batman chooses people he trusts. Commissioner Gordan, the Batgirls, the Robins, and even collaborates with Superman and the Justice League. In the comic series Batman Incorporated, Batman travels to establish Batmen *ALL OVER THE WORLD!* He acknowledges that in areas where people have settled with the status quo, that you need to be the change you want to see in the world. Is he perfect? Not at all. But what he does do comes from a broken heart of a kid who lost his parents to a corrupt and broken city. He dares to create a city where a little boy doesn't have to lose his parents due to theft and poverty. There is only so much Bruce Wayne can do, and that's why Gotham needs Batman.

Nope. -Batman DOES give to charity (Thomas wayne foundation, Martha Wayne foundation...) -He doesn´t work alone (justic league, robin, nightwing, oracle, commissioner gordon ect.) -He wanted Harvey Dent to do his job of cleaning up the streets by using law and justice for him, but Dent failed, hence two-face -He retired, Gotham got worse, he had to come back, eventhough he didn´t want to (no "vigilantic ambitions") -Batmans villains are THE BEST. end of discussion. -Crime and evil people existed before batman was batman. He vowed to stop it/them. -He has no affinity for bats, quite the opposite actually.

And further more for what he unfortunately has to deal with in his hometown which is more criminal, and underworld activity than any other hero has to deal with.....Batman's accomplishments are not overrated, neither is his ingenuity as a self-made hero. Because the money he has will not magically get up and spend itself the right way.....he has to make the decisions to buy the right tech and get the right man or men to help organize it. So there is nothing to sniff at about any of that.....especially compared to being lucky enough to accidentally acquire super-powers like most of the other heroes.

He goes out of his way to slow down and stop as many forms of war as he can, that is where his iron man "prosthesis" as he called it to get out of court charges comes in. As if his raw billion dollar efforts to stop war weren't enough, when he refocused his research and funding it is to green reliable/renewable energy for his ENTIRE operation, with plans to expand to powering the entire city with his efforts in the next five years. I highly recommend you watch Batman the Animated Series episode: Trial. Also, Bruce as in Bruce Wayne the billionaire and not Batman, does help the community by giving to charities and supporting key members of society to help Gotham move forward to a better day on the inspiration that he hopes that no one would ever have to suffer the pain he felt as a child having his parents gunned down. I don't think it has ever been mentioned that he financially supports the infrastructure of Gotham We will never be Superman. We can't fly without a plane (or jetpack), we can't go faster than a speeding bullet, we can't move a planet with our bare hands. Radiation doesn't give us powers just cancer, we don't have Magic Rings. Batman, Green Arrow, the Robins, The Question and to go into Marvel, Nick Fury and as mentioned Tony Stark; these are all superheros with out superpowers but with incredible intelligence or skill. They are the ones that say that we as humans can change the situation we live in and others can live in. we as humans by ourselves are powerful. we as humans working together are unstoppable Also, i would not recommend the live action movies for cannon descriptions of superheros otherwise we can also look at the Batman and Robin movie and no, just don't

You must only watch the movies because Batman funds everything to make Gotham better - health clinics, low income housing, schools, universities, scholarships, food banks, homeless shelters, equips the police with state of the art equipment (including those cool blimps), etc. He does all of that AND runs a multinational company AND saves the city as Batman. Also, he helps pay for the clean up of super villain violence, not only in Gotham but in other cities too. He also donates generously to charities around the world and invests in projects that help real people across the globe. He also created and funded Batman Inc., which helped other corrupt cities get their own versions of Batman (most of those cities lacked other kinds of heroes to protect them from the violence that rages across the world). Gotham is never cured of its ills because comics never end. There is no last chapter for any of these heroes. They fight crime until the end of eternity comes. That is the nature of the shared universe. It exists to pump out more stories. Stories about Superheroes cannot be told unless something is going wrong. Gotham exists as a place covered in a blanket of systemic corruption because that is Batman's milieu (in the same way space is Green Lantern's and the world of the paranormal is John Constantine's).

@@shekharbhardwaj4766 I mean if everyone is a millionaire so there are no billionaires, is that why they don't hate them anymore? ( don't judge me for the bad joke, I am bored )

What this video mostly shows is that John doesn't know his superheroes very well: 1. Bruce Wayne is and always has been a philantropist. Depending on the way the backstory is told, he takes a bit to come around to his father's ideals (often because despite being a good man, Thomas still got robbed and killed in a dark alley in front of his son), but in the end you always end up with Bruce Wayne doing the official good work trying to help people do the things John claims he is not doing (Wayne Corp. for example actually builds low-income housing around the US in the comics), while Batman cleans up the streets at night. 2. Spiderman can absolutely stop shooting his webs. Oftentimes his webshooting is not something he developed genetically from the spider bite, but the webshooters and the fluid in them are his (or his father's) invention. He, just like Batman with the Batmobil, could just go out and show that amazing product to the world and make a lot of money and then become a billionaire philanthropist/inventor himself. 3. Just like Wayne, Tony Stark often does good with his wealth or by giving the world technological advances like the arc reactor (which supposedly provides save, clean energy). Overall: Rich superheroes are often philantropists already. The movies just tend to forget to mention (or gloss over) that detail. Which in turn is actually what speaks volumes about our generation (or at least what Hollywood thinks our generation is like), I think.

I'd agree on several points, but would counter that "philanthropist" isn't an either/or status. Whatever else he's doing for the city, batmobiles, bat planes, and shark-repellent bat sprays don't come cheap, and could be spent on better things than his adolescent fantasy that crime is best addressed through his (admittedly awesome) antics.

I don't think the point is that Spiderman can't stop shooting webs. It's that he isn't spending money on web-shooting rather than effective poverty-reduction plans. If Spiderman were spending millions on refills for his web cartiges, the same issue we have with Batman would apply to Spiderman as well. You are definitely correct about Bruce Wayne being a philanthropist (esp. in the comic books), of course.

Eh. . . John, Bruce Wayne is a renowned Philanthropist in the DC universe and the head of several charitable foundations. You clearly know as much about Batman as you do The Odyssey. I'm sorry, but you should make a video acknowledging what a terrible job CrashCourse (and you, as someone who claims The Odyssey is one of your favourite books and yet judging by that video you've never actually read it) did of covering that particular poem.

Actually John, the spiderwebs aren't a superpower. The movies claim that they are, but the comics (which came first and are considered canon) tell us that the webs are a special chemical concoction that Spidey creates. He's actually a brilliant chemist.

Actually both are Cannon, Marvel and DC both have many different "Cannons" they have them set on different Universes. It is actually one of the great thing about Comics is you can have slightly different takes on their mythos.

WHY I HATE BATMAN BY SOMEONE WHO HAS NEVER ACTUALLY READ A BATMAN COMIC IN THEIR LIFE Batman has entire charities he has created. batman funds the entirety of the Justice League. Batman goes doesn't go after small time petty criminials. He goes after people who are pretty much pure evil [y'know the ones who typically only exist in fictional universes] Spider-Man did choose to be Spider-Man AND also created his fucking web shooters Wayne Enterprises has made quite a few scientific breakthroughs. Batman's villain's may have stupid names but their personalities are what cases people to think he has the greatest villain's gallery in all of comics. Thanks for reading, you jumpcutting hack.
